Celestino shuts down DSL Twins

DSL Twins 3 at DSL Mariners 6

The DSL Twins dropped game two of their best of three series to the DSL Mariners Wednesday at the Eppy Guerrero Complex in Villa Mella.

The Mariners would jump on a throwing error by shortstop Yorby Martinez to start out, allowing Victor Ozuna to reach, and then advance to 2nd when the ball went into the dugout. A sac-bunt by Ramon Moria advanced the runner and Rudy van Heydoorn doubled out to left to score Osuna. Axel Wei would ground out, moving van Heydoorn to 3rd. He'd score when Twins starter Adrian Salcedo unleashed a wild pitch. Hassiel Jimenez would go down on strikes to end the inning.

Ozuna would single in the bottom of the third, then come home on a van Heydoorn double to make it 3-0 Seattle.

The Twins best scoring opportunity in the early part of the game came in the top of the 1st inning when Danny Santana singled and Jairo Perez took a walk. A wild pitch by Seattle's Miguel Celestino put runners at 2nd and 3rd, but Jairo Rodriguez ground out, stranding the men.

Celestino would work 8 innings, scattering 4 hits and a pair of walks over that period while fanning four.

Eddy Santana would take over for Salcedo in the bottom of the 5th. He'd work the next two allowing only 3 hits before giving way to Raynard Doran, who worked the seventh.

In the top of the 7th, Rodriguez would double for the Twins. Jean Carlos Mercedes went down on strikes and Felix Caro flew out. It looked like Rodriguez would be stranded at 2nd, but a error by Angel Zapata in left allowed Manuel Soliman to reach and Rodriguez to score, putting the Twins on the board.

Lesmir Vargas took over the mound for the Twins in the 8th inning and allowed a lead off walk to Moria. Van Heydoorn flew out, but Wei and Jimenez hit back-to-back singles to load up the bags. Leonardo Parra would be summoned from the bullpen, but the new pitcher gave up a double to Hector Mercedes, which cleaned off the bases, making it 6-1 Mariners.

Bruno Mercedes took over for the nearly unhittable Celestino in the top of the 9th. Rodriguez would ground out, but Mercedes knocked a single out to left. Caro would get hit by a pitch putting two men on. Solimen flew out to center before Carlos Vasquez doubled to bring in the two Twins runners. But Vasquez would be picked off at 2nd, ending the game.

The two teams rematch Thursday at Baseball City at 10:30 AM for the decisive 3rd game of the series.

Twins top O's on wild pitch

GCL Orioles 6 at GCL Twins 7

The GCL Twins scored in the bottom of the 10th inning to pick up a 7-6 win over the GCL Orioles on Thursday at the Lee County Sportsplex.

The Orioles jumped on Jean Mijares early when Garabez Rosa doubling with one out on the board. Luis Ramirez flew out, but Jerome Hoes and Edinho Meyer both took walks to load the bags. Omar Casamayor doubled to clean them off. Casamayor would try to stretch it for a triple however and was taken out at 3rd on the throw, letting the Twins have a turn at the plate.

Anderson Hidalgo took a walk then stole 2nd base. A throwing error by catcher Janensis Guerrero advanced him to 3rd. Danny Ortiz would take a walk before Mike Gonzalez doubled to plate Hidalgo. Jae-Hyung Jang struck out and Reggie Wiliams popped out to end the inning.

Hyun-wook Choi singled out to right, then stole second. Wang-Wei Lin, newly reactivated off the DL, took a walk. Juan Sanchez singled to fill the bases. Hicks would pop out before Hidalgo sacrificed in Wook to make it 3-2 O's.

The Twins would tie it up in the 3rd with Mike Gonzales singling. J.J. would reach on a force attempt and Williams single again saw three men on. Wook sacrificed Gonzales in this time for the equalizer.

Miguel Achil replaced Donis De La Cruz for the bottom of the 4th, and got Hicks and Hidalgo to ground out before allowing a line drive single to center. Ortiz then stole 2nd, and would be doubled in by Gonzales to put the Twins on top. Jakub Hajtmar would replace Gonzales as a pitch runner, and J.J. singled Hajtmar in. A wild pitch ty Achil moved J.J. to 3rd, but Williams would ground out to end the inning.

Mijares would hit Xavier Avery with a pitch in the top of the 5th. After Rosa flew out and Ramirez popped out, Avery stole 2nd. Hoes then singled to drive Avery in, to put the Orioles down by only one.

Marcus Moore replaced Achil in the bottom of the sixth, and Hicks singled. Hidalgo doubled to drive in Hicks restoring the two run lead.

The top of the eighth saw Ramirez and Hoes hit back-to-back singles. Meyers' sac-bunt moved the pair and a single to Casamayor scored Ramierz. Grolman Gonzalez sacrificed in Hoes to tie up the game.

Kelvin Mota would replace Tonkin for the top of the ninth. Despite allowing singles to Avery and Rosa, he'd manged to keep the O's off the board. Neither could the Twins capitalize on Hidalgo's walk in the bottom half of the stanza, so the game went into extra innings.

Edinho Meyer singled in the top of the 10th, but Mota took Casamayor out on strikes and got Gonzalez and Guerro to ground out to send the Twins to the plate.

Jean Carlos Reyes took over the pitching for the Orioles and allowed a lead off single to Williams. Wook's sac-bunt moved him to 2nd and a wild pitch by Reyes got him to 3rd. Reyes then unleashed a second wild pitch, putting Williams over the plate and handing the Twins the win.

Gonzales finished up 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, a run and a pair of RBIs. Williams was 2-for-5 with a run. Wook and Sanchez were both 1-for-3, Wook with a run and a RBI and Sanchez with a walk.

Hidalgo was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, a double, a run and two runs scored. Ortiz was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run and J.J. and Hicks were each 1-for-5, J.J. with a RBI, Hicks with a run.

The Twins face the Reds on Friday at the Lee County Sportsplex for a noon game; they travel to the City of Palms complex on Saturday for a 10:00 AM contest.

DSL Twins 6 at DSL Diamondbacks/Reds 1

The DSL Twins knocked out six run on 10 hits to down the DSL Diamondbacks/Reds on the road Thursday morning.

Henry Rodriguez tripled in the bottom of the first for the Dia-Reds, and came home one out later on a Angel Logrono single for the only host run.

Randy Pina doubled, then moved to 3rd on a Carlos Vasquez sac-bunt in the top of the 3rd. Danny Santana singled him in, then stole 2nd base. Yorby Martinez would reach on fielding error, plating Santana for the second Twins run.

Vasquez singled in the top of the fifth, then advanced on back-to-back ground outs by Santana and Martinez. Mercedes would single him in, for the insurance run.

Gustavo Delgado would replace Dia-Reds starter Teo Gutierrez for the top of the six. Felix Caro flew out before Yancarlo Franco singled and advanced to 2nd on Delgado's throwing error. Juan Blanco took a walk and Pina would be hit by a pitch to load the bags. Franco would try to steal home but would be caught. He should have stayed where he was as Vasquez was then walked. Mario Lujan was brought in to replace Delgado, and Danny Santana doubled off him to clean off the plates, scoring three.

Blanco and Pina were both 2-for-3, Blanco with a triple and a run and Pina with a double and a pair of runs to lead the attack. Danny Santana was 2-for-5 with a double, a run and 4 RBIs. Vasquez was 1-for-2 with a walk and 2 runs.

Mercedes and Franco finished up 1-for-4 each at the plate, Mercedes with a walk and a RBI, while Franco shared the one his wonder title with Jairo Rodriguez, who ended the game 1-for-5.

Adrian Salcedo picked up his 4th win of the season, allowing 1 earned run on 3 hits and a pair of walks while striking out 8 over 5.2 innings.

The Twins host the DSL Cubs1 on Friday for a 10:30 AM Dominican time game. The two teams are tied at 40-24 each for third place in the DSL B.C. North Division, 2 games behind the division leading DSL Yankees2.

Wisconsin blanks Snappers; E-Twins top K-Mets

Beloit 0 at Wisconsin 10

The Beloit Snappers continued to struggle at the plate, this time being shut out by the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Wisconsin starter Keith Renaud scattered four hits and a pair of walks over 6.2 innings to keep the Snappers off balance.

Daniel Carroll singled for the T-Rattlers to lead off the bottom of the first and Denny Almonte put a David Bromberg pitch over the left field wall for his seventh home run of the season, helping Wisconsin to an early 2-0 lead.

Despite going down on the strikes in the bottom of the first, Edilio Colina would make it first base on a wild pitch by Bromberg. Joe White singled, moving Colina to 3rd and Alex Liddi's ground out served to plate the runner.

The bottom of the sixth saw Denny Almonte leading off with a home run, his eighth of the season going over the left field wall. Colina singled and advanced to 3rd on a throwing error by Juan Richardson. white would go down on strikes before Liddi singled to drive in Colina. Joseph Dunigan doubled out to right to score Liddi and moved to 3rd on the throw from right field. Beloit field manager Nelson Prada took Bromberg off the mound at the point, calling Mike Tarsi from the bullpen. Juan Diaz would sacrifice in Dunigan before Tarsi allowed a double to Blake Ochoa. Maximo Mendez's single would get Ochoa to 3rd, but he'd be stranded when Carroll was taken out on strikes.

Danny Hernandez would replace Tarsi in the bottom of the 8th, and walked Liddi. Dunigan ground into a force out that took Liddi out at 2nd. Diaz then tripled to drive in Dunigan before Ochoa put his 3rd home run of the season over the left field wall to finish off the scoring.

Chris Cates, Richardson, Greg Yersich, Andrew Schmiesing and Jeanfred Brito were all 1-for-3, Cates with a walk as well. Estarlin De Los Santos was 1-for-4. No multiple hit and no extra bases. And only 1 walks.

Bromberg suffered his 8th loss of the season giving up 7 runs on 8 hits while striking out 8 over 5.1 innings.

Having rattled enough, the Snappers now get a little loony, returning to Pohlman Field to host the Great Lakes Loons for a 3-game series. First pitch is due at 7:00 PM.

Kingsport 8 at Elizabethton 9

The Elizabethton Twins were able to stop a late inning rally by the Kingsport Mets to remain n first place in the Appy League's west division.

Kingsport would get to E-Twins starter Bobby Lanigan first, when Seth Williams singled in the top of the 2nd inning. A fielding error by Danny Rams at first allowed Stefan Welch to reach and sent Williams to 3rd. Pedro Zapata's ground out served to plate Williams and a sac-fly by Doug McNulty brought in Welch.

Rafael Fernandez singled in the top of the 3rd, moved to 2nd on Kyle Suire's ground out and scored on a Charles Doyle line drive to left, making it 3-0 Kingsport.

The Twins would finally answer back though in the bottom of that inning when Dominic De La Osa was hit by a pitch. One out later, Jon Waltenbury put his 6th home run of the season over the right field wall to give Elizabethton two.

McNulty would homer in the top of the fourth, a solo-shot that cleared the center field fence.

Michael Harrington returned the favor in the bottom half of the inning, his 7th of the year going over the right field wall. Following a ground out to Evan Bigley and a strike out to Danny Rams, Angel Morales doubled and James Beresford took a walk. De La Osa reached on a force attempt to load the bags, but Romero would pop out to strand them.

Waltenbury lead off the attack in the fifth by drawing a walk. Manuel Alvarez would come into replace Collin McHugh on the mound and Alex Soto took a double off of him to bring Waltenbury home. Michael Harrington then double to score Soto, putting the E-Twins on top. Bigley launched his 7th home run of the season over the left center field wall for a pair of insurance runs. Rams would single before Jorge Rodriguez replaced Alvarez on the mound. Morales singled off the new hurler, as did Beresford, which plated Rams. De La Osa would go down on the strikes before Romero singled to drive in Morales. Having batted around the order, Waltenbury drew another walk. Soto hit into a force out this time that took Beresford out at home, saving the run. Harrington would ground out to end the inning.

With two outs in the top of the 7th, Suire walked and Doyle doubled. Wilmer Flores singled to drive in Suire and a Williams fly ball single brought in Doyle. E-Twins field manager would then bring in Steve Blevins to replace Lanigan. A throwing error by Beresford allowed Welch to reach and Flores to score before Blevins could get Zapata to ground out to bring the E-Twins up to bat again.

A walk to Fernandez and a double to Suire brought in the final Mets run.

Mark Hamburger worked the final inning for his fifth save of the season.

Rams and Morales were both 3-for-4 at the plate with a walk and a run, Morales with a double. Harrington was 2-for-5 with a double and a pair of runs and a pair of runs scored. Waltenbury was 1-for-3 with 2 walks, 2 runs and 2 RBIs, while De La Osa and Beresford were both 1-for-4, De La Osa with a run, Beresford with a walk and a run scored.

Romero, Soto and Bigley were each 1-for-5, Soto with a double a run and a RBI and Bigley with a run and two RBIs on the yarder.

The Twins take Tuesday off. They then head over to Greeneville to face the Astros on Wednesday for a 7:00 PM game.

DSL Rockies 1 at DSL Twins 4

Adrian Salcedo worked 7 innings for the DSL Twins, allowing only 1 run, earned on 7 hits and a walk while fanning four to pick up only his second win of the season as the DSL Twins downed the DSL Rockies, 4-1.

Felix Caro doubled , then came home on a Jhonatan Arias single in the bottom of the 3rd to open up the scoring for the D-Twins.

In the bottom of the sixth, Jairo Rodriguez reached on a fielders choice that saw Oswaldo Arcia taken out at home. Jean Carlos Mercedes singled to drive in Rodrigez, and Mercedes moved to 3rd on a throwing error by Miguel De Leon. A wild pitch by Rockie's starter Nelson Gonzalez allowed Mercedes to score.

Back-to-back doubles to Arcia and Jairo Perez in the bottom of the 8th, add an extra point on for the Twins, rounding out the offense.

The lone Rockie's run came in the form of Juan Crousset's fourth home run of the season in the top of the first.

Perez finished up 2-for-3 with a double while Arcia was 2-for-4 with a double and a run. Danny Santana, Arias and Mercedes were all 1-for-4, Santana with a double, Arias with a walk and Mercedes with a run. Caro was 1-for-3 with a double and a run. Rodriguez was 0-for-4 despite having a run.

Delays and Postponements

More rain all over Southwest Florida forced the postponement of the game between the GCL Twins and the GCL Reds until July 21. The game, which was to be played at the City of Sarasota will now be played as part of two-game seven-inning double header on Monday, July 21 at the Lee County Sportsplex.

Happily the weather is clearing on Thursday so the game against the GCL Red Sox should be played as scheduled.



Much like the games over the last two days, 21-year old Javier Brown's professional baseball career got off to a postponed, and painful, start on June 19 when a foul ball flew into the dugout and hit him in the side of the face.

It was the kind of pain his father could relate to, as Javier Brown Sr. played professional baseball with the Milwaukee Brewer's organization. "Not only do you have to be able to play the game, but you have to be lucky and stay healthy," Brown Sr. was quoted as saying the Pacific Daily News. Luck was definitely not with Brown Jr. when the ball flew into his face.

Brown Sr. was not really keen on his son following in his footsteps, knowing the tremendous amount of stress his son would be under in his quest to make it to the big leagues. As a result, it was Javier's Mom, Jeanette, who was responsible for introducing her son to the game.

Once it became obvious that Brown Jr. had a talent for the game however, things changed. The older Brown would take his son out to the ballpark so he could learn from other professional ballplayers.

Academically ineligible to play for Grossmont Junior College, Brown Jr. would play in the Mexican Leagues instead. "I think (playing in Mexico has) been a big advantage for me," Brown Jr. said in the same article "It's helped me prepare a lot mentally and work on my off-speed pitches. They're real crafty there; they really hit their spots with their off-speed stuff."

Now, if you've gone over to read the article in the Pacific Daily News, you're probably wondering what a California native has to do with Guam. While Brown Jr. has never been to Guam, his grandparents are originally from the island. If he should ever make it to the major leagues and the money the MLB promises, Brown Jr. has a dream.

"I want to go to Guam and open up a baseball academy," Brown Jr. said in a sister article, also from the Pacific Daily News "I'm sure they have a lot of talent on the island and they just need the resources."

Javier has a way to go to realize his dreams though. The start of his career temporarily delayed by injury, Javier is only 2-for-5 through 2 games with 1 RBI. Still, he shows solid defensive skills, good speed and a potentially strong bat.

And while the path through to the majors is long, the goal is certainly not unreachable, as GCL alumni Justin Morneau demonstrated with his recent All-star game appearance.

Aside from picking up the hardware in the home run derby, Morneau crossed the plate with the game winning run in the 15-inning extravaganza that was played at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday.

So hang on in there Javi, and try not to hit any more balls with your face. Bats work so much better!

DSL Reds 7 at DSL Twins 2

Adrian Salcedo scattered four hits and a walk over 6 inning while fanning 3 to blank the DSL Reds, but Leonardo Parra, in relief gave up 5 runs, 2 earned, on 4 hits in 1 inning as the Reds took advantage of Twins errors to notch a 7-2 win.

Lesther Galvan doubled in the bottom of the first with one out on the board and moved to 3rd on Jean Carlos Mercedes ground out. Oswaldo Arcia singled him in to give the Twins an early one run lead.

The top of the 7th would do them in however and they'd only take one more run in the bottom of that stanza. Manuel Soliman singled and advanced to 2nd on a fielding error by the Reds' Miguel Rodriguez. Eliel Sierra's ground ball to second plated him. Sierra would move to second on a throwing error, but Jhonatan Arias ground out and Randy Pina and Carlos Vasquez went down on strikes.

The Twins only managed five hits, with Galvan picking up the only extra base hit.

The DSL Twins face the DSL Rockies on the road on Thursday. Start time is 10:30 AM Dominican Time.
