Snappers sweep in extra innings

Yangervis Solarte

Great Lakes 2 at Beloit 3

W: C. Nolte (4-2, 2.33); L: M. Ramirez (2-8, 4.04)
HR: BEL: G. Yersich (8), M. Dolenc (3).

A triple by Estarlin De Los Santos and a single by Yangervis Solarte combined to give the Beloit Snappers the game winning run in the bottom of the 11th and a sweep of the Great Lakes Loons at Pohlman Field on Thursday night.

Great Lakes would get on the board first, with Preston Mattingly doubling off Shooter Hunt in the third inning. Hunt would then walk Parker Dalton, and a sac-bunt by Jovanny Rosario moved the pair. Erik Kanaby reached on a fielder's choice as Juan Richardson tried to make the play at the plate, but he was charged with an interference error and Mattingly scored. Hunt would walk Andrew Lambo, before getting Edwardo Perez to fly into a double play that took Dalton out at the plate.

Greg Yersich blasted his 8th home run of the season over the right field wall for Beloit, putting them on the board in the top of the fifth. Chris Cates would follow that up with a double, but Andrew Schmiesing and Jeanfred Brito both ground out to bring Great Lakes up to bat again.

Hunt would work five innings allowing only a pair of hits while fanning 9, but he'd walk five, and unleash a wild pitch in the fifth. That nearly cost him another run. He'd walk Rosario to start the inning, and then the Loons right fielder stole 2nd. After Kanaby was taken out on strikes, Rosario moved to 3rd on Hunt's wild pitch. Lambo would reach on a fielder's choice, with Richardson throwing the ball to Yersich to take Rosario out at home.

So Hunt owed the great Snappers' defense a couple of thank yous when Mike Allen took over in the sixth.

Mark Dolenc went yard in the bottom of the 7th, putting his 3rd of the season over the left center field wall.

The Loons tied it up in the top of the 8th though with Lambo and Perez taking back-to-back singles off Mike Allen. Blake Martin took over at that point, and Alfredo Silverio laid down a lovely sac-bunt to advance his runners. Kenley Jansen's ground out served to score Lambo for the equalizing run.

That sent the game into extra innings until De Lo and Soley connected for the Snappers win.

Allen would allow 3 hits and a walk while fanning three over 2 innings. He'd be charged for Lambo's run in the 8th. Martin would be changed with the blown save although he allowed only 1 hit and a pair of walks while fanning 3 over 2.2 innings. Charles Nolte picked up the win, his fourth of the season, pitching the last 1.1 innings of the game, during which time he struck out one.

The feisty little (5'3") Cates would go 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk and a pair of doubles. Solarte and Dolenc were both 2-for-4, Dolenc with a run and a run scored courtesy of his yard ball. Yersich also had a run and a run scored for the same reason, but he was 1-for-4 at he plate as was Schmeising, who would become the game's one hit wonder. De Lo finished up 2-for-5 at the plate with a triple and a run.

With the Loons shot down, the Lansing Lugnut lug themselves into town for the next three games. Friday's contest features post game fireworks sponsored in part by Suds O'Hananhan's Irish Pub. The first pitch goes out at 7:00 PM, central time.

Beloit, E-Twins both win

Greg Yersich

Great Lakes 3 at Beloit 4

W: C. Anderson (2-0, 6.06); L: R. Blevins (2-5, 2.45)
HR: BEL: G. Yersich (7).

"Great Lakes" sounds much better than "Midland" for a team location - the Midland Loonies anyone? - but in either case, "Beloit Snappers take a win" sounds the best.

It took them 10 innings, but they did just that, defeating the Loons for a 4-3 victory.

Rene Leveret reached on a throwing error in the bottom of the 2nd and moved to 2nd on a passed ball. Mark Dolenc reached on a fielder's choice that took Leveret down at 3rd, but Juan Richardson then doubled, plating the speedy Dolenc to put the Snappers on the board.

Preston Mattingly singled and Parker Dalton walked off Snappers starter Henry Reyes. A wild pitch advanced the pair and an Erik Kanaby singled drove them both in. Kanaby would be picked off, but Francisco Lizarraga drew a walk. Andrew Lambo ground into a force out, taking Lizarraga out at 2nd. Eduard Perez drew a walk, moving Lambo to 2nd and a throwing error by Greg Yersich on a pick off attempt put the ball into the outfield and allowed Lambo to score. (Good job Greg.)

Yangervis Solarte drew a walk with 2 outs in the bottom of the fifth and moved to 2nd on a Leveret single. After a pitching change saw Rob Zimmermann replace Bryan Morris on the mound, a fielding error by Dalton allowed Dolenc to reach and Solarte to score.

Robert Blevins took over for Zimmermann in the bottom of the 8th. Yersich then made up for his earlier error by launching his 7th home run of the season over the center field wall to tie up the game.

Leveret doubled in the bottom of the 10th and would be replaced by pinch runner Allan de San Miguel. Dolenc would go down on strikes and Richardson would line out before a Yersich single drove in de San Miguel for the game winning run.

Chris Anderson picked up his second win of the season, working one inning in relief. Mike Tarsi and Santos Arias worked a pair each, scattering 3 hits and a pair of walks over four innings.

Yersich was 2-for-5 with a run and pair of RBIs. Leveret was 4-for-5, Dirty had the run for him. Solarte was 1-for-3 with a pair of walks and a run, and Richardson as 1-for-5 with a run batted in.

Game three of the series is Thursday night at Pohlman field as the Snappers look for a sweep. First pitch is due out at 7:00 PM Central Time.

W: D. Osterbrock (4-2, 3.23); L: H. Villar (1-4, 4.67)
HR: ELI: E. Bigley (8), D. Rams 2 (5).

Dan Osterbrock, Evan Bigley and Danny Rams were all instrumental in Elizabethton's 10-4 victory over the Greeneville Astros Wednesday night as they opened up a 3-game set at Pioneer Park. The win, coupled with a K-Mets loss, puts the the E-Twins back on top, 2 games ahead of Kingsport.

Osterbrock surrendered the first run in the game with Ebert Rosario reaching on a fielding error by Nathan Hanson. Federico Hernandez then doubled, moving Rosario to third. An Albert Cartwright sac-fly would bring in Rosario, putting Greeneville on the board.

Astro's starter Henry Villar would hold out until the top of the 4th inning. Michael Harrington took a walk before Danny Rams went yard, blasting his 4th of the year, a line drive, over the left field wall. Angel Morales would single, but then be caught stealing and Nat Hanson would fly out. James Beresford took a walk before Dominic De La Osa and Adam Severino hit back-to-back singles to plate Beresford.

Bigley would homer in the top of the 5th, his eighth of the year finding its way over the left center field fence. Villar then found his way back to the dugout, being replaced by David Dinelli.

Jorge De Leon doubled in the bottom of the 5th and Wilton Infante singled him in, to make the score 4-2 Elizabethton.

The top of the seventh would not go well for Patrick Urckfitz, who took over for Dinelli in the bottom of the sixth. He'd give up a home run to Rams, the second of the game for the Twins slugger and his fifth of the season, which went over the right center field wall. Morales would go down on strikes before Hanson singled and Bereford reached on Rosario's throwing error. De La Osa then walked to load the bases. Sevarino singled to plate Hanson and Breseford, while Urckfitz unleashed a wild pitch to advance De La Osa and Sevarino. Jon Waltenbury sacrificed in De La Osa and a Bigley line drive single scored Severino before Harrington lined out to give the Astros a turn at the plate.

Hernandez walked and Cartwright tripled him in. A wild pitch by Osterbrock brought in Cartwright but De Leon when down on strikes while Infante would ground out. Austin singled and advanced to second on a throwing error by De La Osa, but Renzo Tello struck out to end the inning, with the Twins leading 9-4.

Joel Romero pitched the 9th for Greeneville and Andrea Lucati replaced him for the top of the 9th. De La Osa drew a walk to lead off, then one out later, stole 2nd base. Waltenbury doubled him in to give the E-Twins an even 10.

Osterbrock finished off allowing 4 runs, 3 earned on six hits and one walk while striking out 12 over seven innings. Danny Rondon worked the last two scoreless innings for Elizabethton, scattering 3 hits and a walk while fanning 2.

Game two of the three game series is Thursday night starting at 7:00 PM. It s a Thirsy Thursday for the 'Stros as well as the Andrew Johnson bobble head give away.

W: J. Parker (9-5, 4.04); L: M. Tarsi (4-11, 5.67); SV: C. Zavada (2)
HR: SOU: T. Harbin (9).

The Beloit Snappers took an early lead against the South Bend Silverhawks on Friday, but could not hold off the home team's comeback, falling 5-4 at Coveleski Stadium.

With two outs on the board in the top of the second, Mark Dolenc singled, then stole 2nd. Greg Yersich followed that up with a line drive to right that plated Dolenc to open the scoring. Allan de San Miguel would get hit by a pitch and Jeanfred Brito tripled to bring the pair of catchers in. A missed catching error by second baseman Taylor Harbin got Brito over the plate as well. Ben Revere would walk, then be caught stealing 2nd to send Beloit out to field.

Snappers starter Henry Reyes would keep South Bend quiet until the bottom of the fourth inning. After getting Harbin out on strikes, Sean Coughlin doubled out to left. Chance Wheeless would go down on strikes, but Eli Rumler took a walk. Ramon Ramirez singled to score the pair, helped in part by Revere's fielding error. Ramirez would end up at second base and Jimmy Principe doubled him in before Reyes would get Matthew Oxendine out on strikes.

Harbin would tie up the game in the bottom of the 5th, sending a fly ball over the center field fence for this ninth home run of the season.

Mike Tarsi would replace Reyes in the bottom of the sixth, and after getting Wheeless out on strikes, allowed a single to Rumler. The runner would be advanced by Juan Richardson's throwing error. Ramirez singled to send Rumler to 3rd and Principe sacrificed him into put the Silverhawks on top.

Elizabethton Twins

Greeneville 7 at Elizabethton 10

W: B. Tippett (6-2, 2.92); L: J. Lyles (1-2, 4.40); SV: M. Hamburger (4)
HR: ELI: A. Soto 2 (9), A. Severino (1).

The Elizabethton Twins bats were back and booming as they downed the Greeneville Astros in a slug fest Friday night. The teams knocked out a combined 20 hits for 17 runs.

Greeneville took and early lead with Jose Altuve singling and stealing second. Wilton Infante went down on strikes before Jay Austin singled to drive in Altuve. Austin then stole second and come home on Renzo Tello's double out to left.

The E-Twins answered back with Adam Severino sending his first home run of the season over the right field wall.

Jon Waltenbury and Alex Soto hit back-to-back doubles in the bottom the fourth. Michael Harrington's double plated the pair to give the E-Twins the lead. After Evan Bigley went down on strikes during which time Harrington advanced to 3rd, Jeff Lanning sacrificed in the Twins left fielder.

The top of the sixth saw Altuve take a walk, then move to 2nd on a wild pitch by E-Twins starter Brad Tippett. Infante's ground out advanced him to 3rd and he'd score on Jay Austin's fly ball single to center to cut the Twins lead to one.

James Beresford singled in the bottom half of the stanza however and advanced to 2nd on Austin's fielding error. Dominic De La Osa's ground out saw him to 3rd and Nick Romero singled to plate the Aussie. This would signal a pitching change for the Astros, who brought in David Dinelli to replace Jordan Lyles. Waltenbury singled out center before Alex Soto went yard, his 8th of the year over the center field wall to bring in the pair of runners with him.

An 8-3 lead seemed to do little to dent the Astro's enthusiasm. Ricardo Bonfante doubled in the top of the 7th and moved to 3rd on a Altuve fly out. The Twins would take the opportunity to replace Brad Tippett with Kyle Carr. Carr would unleash a wild pitch however, allowing Bonfante to score.

Tippett would leave the contest, having allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out 5 in 6.2 innings.

Waltenbury took a walk in the bottom of the 7th, and Soto took advantage of the thin mountain air to homered him in with his second yard ball of the contest, his 9th of the season.

Tello tripled off Carr in the top of the 8th, and would come home, one out later on Kody Hinze line drive single.

Lee Martin replaced Carr in the top of the 9th. He'd walk Fredrico Hernandez and Bonfante. A single by Altuve brought in the first runner before Mark Hamburger was brought in from the bullpen. He'd get Infante to ground out, but Bonfante scored on the play. Then took Austin out on strikes and got Tello to ground out to end the inning, and the game.

Soto was 3-for-4 in the slug fest with 3 runs and 5 RBIs. Waltenburh was 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs. Romero and Severino were both 1-for-4 with a run and a run scored, Severino with a triple. Harrington was 1-for-3 with a double, a run and 2 RBIs, while Beresford was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and a run.

The E-Twins host the Kingport Mets for a pair of game on Saturday, making out a previous rain out. First pitch for the first game is due out at 6:00 PM Eastern time.

Snappers find Wild not to their liking

Beloit Snappers

Wisconsin 8 at Beloit 4

W: J. Wild (4-6, 4.05); L: M. Tarsi (4-10, 5.77); SV: J. Escalona (1)
HR: None.

The Beloit Snappers have been hit hard by the injury bug. This was evident on Sunday as the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers doubled up the Snappers, 8-4.

A throwing error by Chris Cates put Alex Liddi on base for the T-Rattlers. Joseph Dunigan then singled off Beloit starter Mike Tarsi. The pair would be advanced by Juan Diaz's sac-bunt before Blake Ochoa ground out. Liddi would scamper across the plate to open the scoring.

Beloit answered back in the bottom of the stanza, with Mark Dolenc singling and moving to second on a failed pick off attempt. Yangervis Solarte, who was moved down to Beloit to make room for the rehabbing Brandon Roberts and Jose Mijares on the Fort Myers roster, ground out, moving Dolenc to 3rd. Greg Yersich would sacrifice in the Snappers outfielder to tie up the game.

Alex Meneses walked to lead off the top of the 3rd, and was advanced to second on Daniel Carroll's ground out bunt. Edilio Colina singled to plate Meneses, and moved to second on Dolenc's throw to the plate. Denny Almonte would strike out before Liddi doubled in Colina. A Dunigan single put Liddi across the plate, to make it 4-1 Wisconsin.

Carroll would single in the top of the 5th and made his way to 3rd on a fielding error by Dolenc. Colina singled before Almonte went down a strikes. A wild pitch by Tarsi allowed Carroll to score, and moved Colina to 2nd. Liddi singled out to right to plate Colina, and then stole 2nd. Dunigan's single would deflect off Juan Richardson who was playing first, allowing Liddi to score to make it 7-1 for the T-Rattlers. Mike Allen would come in at that point.

Tarsi would be charged for 7 runs, 6 earned on nine hits and a walk, while striking out 3 over 4.1 innings. Allen would work the next 3.2, allowing one hit and walking 2 while fanning 4, keeping Wisconsin from advancing their lead.

The Snappers offense would get in gear in the bottom of the 7th, with Ryan Moorer replacing Wisconsin starter Jake Wild on the mound. Solarte would lead off with a single and Yersich followed him onto base with a grounder to center. Following a fly out to Andrew Schmiesing, Jeanfred Brito would take a walk. Estarlin De Los Santos singled to plate Solarte, while Cates ground out brought in Yersich. Ben Revere would ground into a force out however, to end the inning.

The Timber Rattlers would load the bases in the 8th, but Allen got Carroll to ground into a force out to strand the runners.

With one out on the board, Dolenc and Solarte would draw back to back-to-back walks. Following a line out to Yersich and a pitching change the saw Jose Escalona trot out to the mound, Schmiesing singled to plate Dolenc. Brito would fly out however, and it would be all Beloit would get.

Blake Martin allowed a single to Colina to lead off the top of the 9th, and Amonte followed that with line drive to center, moving Colina to 3rd. Liddi would ground into a double play that scored Wisconsin's second baseman, to finish off the scoring for the Rattlers.

De Los Santos was 2-for-5 in the contest with a RBI, the only Snapper with a multi hit game.

Dolenc, Solarte and Schmiesing were all 1-for-3, Dolenc with a walk and a pair of runs, Solate with a walk and a run and Schmiesing with a walk and a RBI. Yersich was 1-for-2 with a walk, a run and and RBI and Revere would finish up 1-for-5 with a triple.

Van Mil to pitch for Team Netherlands

Loek Van Mil will be representing Team Netherlands in the upcoming Summer Olympic Games. So far this season, Van Mil is 2-2 with a 3.22 ERA in 44.2 innings pitched. Loek has struck out 42 batters while walking 25 in 28 relief appearances.

Signed by the Twins as a non-drafted free agent in July of 2005, Van Mil has received plenty of national media attention this year for his height. The 7’1 right-hander, along with his 5’3 teammate Chris Cates, have been a national focus on ESPN2 (First Take), Sports Illustrated, the Minnesota Twins monthly magazine and much more. The teammates make up the largest height differential in professional sports with each player being the tallest and shortest players, respectfully, in all of professional baseball.

Taking Loek’s spot for the time being is infielder Yangervis Solarte. Solarte comes to Beloit after spending the first 42 games of the season with the Fort Myers Miracle. While in Fort Myers, Yangervis hit .259 with three home runs and 16 RBIs in 147 at-bats. (Snappers)

Snappers drop pair to Dragons

Danny Guerrera

Beloit 7 at Dayton 8

HR: BEL: G. Yersich (6). DAY: Z. Cozart (10), L. Parker (9), N. Soto (1).

When we left this game in progress, the Beloit Snappers were winning by one but the Dayton Dragons needed to finish off their inning. Charles Nolte would come in to resume the game and would get Devin Mesoraco to ground out to end the seventh.

He'd give up a home run however, to Logan Parker in the bottom of the 8th, tying the game up again.

Greg Yersich would go yard off Jeff Jeffords for the Snappers in the top of the 9th to put Beloit on top again.

But the game was not over. Zach Cozart, Neftali Soto and Jolbert Cabrera singled to load up the bases on Nolte. After Denis Phipps and Mesoraco both lined out, Parker singled out to right to drive in Cozart and Soto to end the game with the Dragons on top.

Yersich was 4-for-5 with a run, and 3 RBIs. Mark Dolenc was 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs, while Ben Revere and Estarlin De Los Santos were both 2-for-5, De Lo with a triple and 2 RBIs.

W: D. Conatser (2-0, 2.87); L: D. Hernandez (0-2, 7.59)

Game two should have been a shortened affair, but was also played to 9 as the game was tied at the end of 7.

Logan Parker would take a walk off Hirschfeld in the bottom of the 2nd, and would be doubled in by Jolbert Cabrera to put the Dragons on the board.

Mark Dolenc doubled in the top of the 3rd for Beloit and following a pop out by Jeanfred Brito, Estarling De Los Santos singled to move him to 3rd. Ben Revere's line drive to right plated Dolenc, while Deibinson Romero's grounder to left brought in De Lo to put Beloit on top.

With two outs on the board in the top of the fourth, Dolenc singled, then stole 2nd. Brito then doubled to drive in Dolenc. The speedy Brito would be taken out at 3rd however as he tried to stretch the hit for a triple, retiring the side.

Cabrera would reach on Romero's fielding error in the bottom of the stanza, and move to second on Denis Phipps ground ball single. Cabrera then advanced to 3rd on Michael McKennon's fly out. Jason Bour would go down swinging and Phipps would steal 3rd. A throwing error by Allan de San Miguel allowed Cabrera to score.

Neftali Soto tripled and Parker singled him to tie up the game in the bottom of the fifth.

Lee Martin took over for Hirschfeld in the bottom of the sixth and allowed only 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 4. Jonathan Conatser replaced Guerrero for the 8th and the 9th, and allowed only 1 hit while fanning 2 over that time frame.

Rain helps Miracle on Water Day #3

Brevard County Manatees

Brevard County 3 at Fort Myers 5

W: J. Rainville (1-1, 2.87); L: Z. Braddock (3-5, 5.04); SV: A. Slama (16)
HR: BRE: S. Chapman (10), C. Caufield (2). FTM: G. Olson (1).

A steady drizzle in the second inning helped the Fort Myers Miracle take four runs from the Brevard County Manatees who could not control a slippery ball.

The game would be delayed for close to 2 hours while a storm swept through the area, with the first pitch finally being thrown at 8:50 PM.

Zach Braddock was the hard luck pitcher who was on the mound when the drizzle started. He would hit Edward Ovalle with a pitch, then issue walks to Juan Portes and Eli Tintor to load the bases. Steve Singleton knocked a line drive to left that brought in a pair. Chuck Caufield would be charged with an era despite playing in weather not fit for a duck on a very skiddish outfield surface. Yangervis Solarte would then get hit by a pitch and Danny Lehmann would walk to force in a run. John Axford then came in for the Manatees. He would get Garrett Olson to hit into a force out that scored Singleton to spot the Miracle a four run lead.

Despite being named for an aquatic animal, the Manatees probably aren't very water friendly right now.

Steve Chapman would take a walk in the top of the 7th, and Chuck Caufield would follow that up with his second home run of the season, over the left field fence to cut the Miracle lead in half.

However, with Travis Wendte on the mound in the bottom of the inning, Garrett Olson would follow suite, clocking his first ball out of the yard for the Miracle.

Jose Lugo would allow a home run to Chapman in the ninth, his 10th yard ball of the season, which went over the right field wall. Anthony Slama would come in to take the last two outs.

It is very questionable as to how many of the announced 3,224 fans were actually in attendance to enjoy the midnight fireworks display.

The Miracle managed only three hits in the game. But who needs hits when you can just swim your way to victory?

The series concludes on a hopefully drier Sunday, with a rather interesting match up between Alex Burnett (6-2, 3.56) on the mound for the Miracle and Jeremy Jeffress (3-3, 4.75) throwing for the Manatees.

Due to the lengthy rain delay to start Saturday’s action, fans with ticket stubs for Saturday’s game can hold on to them, using them for free admission to any remaining Miracle Sunday-Wednesday home game in 2008.

Despite the addition of Rene Leveret and Andrew Schmiesing to their roster, the Beloit Snappers would still fall, 8-4 to the Cedar Rapids Kernels.

Mike Tarsi would take the loss, giving up 6 runs, 5 earned, on 8 hits and 1 walks while striking out 5.

The Snappers offense would not get into gear until the bottom of the six, when Chris Armstrong replaced Jordan Walden on the mound. Rene Leveret would double, and Greg Yersich would hammer his fifth home run of the season over the center field wall to give the Snappers two. Following a strike out to Schmiesing, the Kernels got Ismael Carmona from the bullpen. He would issue walks to Mark Dolenc and Estarlin De Los Santos. Chris Cates would fly out, but Ben Revere singled to drive in Dolenc for the 3rd snappers run. Deibinson Romero would draw a walk as well, but A.J. Ford stepped into the game, getting Ozzie Lewis out on strikes to end the inning.

Yersich would double in the bottom of the seventh, and following a ground out to Schmiesing, come home on Dolenc's line drive single. That would be it for the Snappers though who never could overcome the initial deficit.

Yersich had the only multi-hit game for Beloit, going 2-for-5 with a pair of runs and a pair of runs scored.

Beloit, E-town both fail

Beloit Snappers

Cedar Rapids 8 at Beloit 5

W: R. Fish (7-2, 4.86); L: S. Hirschfeld (5-2, 2.72); SV: T. Kiely (1)
HR: None.

Things were not a poppin' for the Beloit Snappers at Pohlman Field, as the Cedar Rapid Kernels downed the home town team, 8-5.

Steve Hirschfeld lasted only 3 innings, giving up 4 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks while striking out 3. Andrew Romine singled with one out on the field and Hector Estrella walked. Following a fly out to Efren Navarro, Jay Brossman doubled to drive in the pair of runners. Clay Fuller took a walk before Julio Perez ground ball single plated Brossman to give Cedar Rapids a 3-0 lead out of the gate.

Tyler Johnson doubled in the top of the 2nd, moved to 3rd on a Ryan Groth single and come home when Romaine hit into a double play.

The Snappers would answer back this time, with Ozzie Lewis doubling, then moving to 3rd on Eric Santiago's ground out. Greg Yersich would then double in Lewis.

Henry Reyes would work the 4th for the Snappers and be on the mound in the top of the fifth when Brossman hit his 22nd double out to center. After Fuller went down on strikes, Julio Perez would double Brossman in.

That finished it up for the Kernels, but the Snappers were in a big hole with one inning left to play.
