New Britain 1 at New Hampshire 0

Surprise! Surprise! The New Britain Rock Cats took both sides of a double header from the New Hampshire Fishing Cats, ending the Fisher's win streak.

In game one, lefty Kyle Aselton fired off six innings, scattering five hits and fanning 3. Ben Julianel picked up the save in the last inning and also preserved Aselton's shut out.

The only Rock Cats run came in the top of the 4th when Brock Peterson took a walk, then moved to 2nd on David Winfree's ground out. Felix Molina's line drive to right plated him.

Luke Hughes would go 2-for-3 in the contest, but did not factor into the scoring. Molina was also 2-for-3, with 1 RBI.

Rob Ray took the loss, allowing 1 run on 8 hits and 2 walks while striking out 6 over 6.1 innings.

HR: NBR: E. Lis (9).

In game two, the Cats jumped on the board early when Dustin Martin smacked double out to center off Julio Pinto. Brian Dinkelman's ground out moved him to 3rd, before Erik Lis took a walk. Danny Valencia ground into a force out which plated Martin. Valencia would then be caught stealing 2nd.

The Fishers responded in the bottom of the 2nd with Kyle Phillips doubling. Eric Nielson and Anthony Hatch would go down on strikes before Ryan Klosterman's grounder drove in Phillips. Klosterman would move to 2nd on Erik Lis's throw. Scott Campbell then singled out to left to plate Klosterman, before Jeff Manship would get Andrew Pinckney out on strikes.

Those would be the only 2 runs Manship would give up, on 4 hits and a pair of walks while striking out 8 over six innings.

Pinto would work five innings, giving way to Daryl Harang in the sixth. Rocky Palacios would single his way on to base and then be replaced by pinch runner Steve Tolleson. Two outs later, Erik Lis would blast a ball over the right field wall for his 9th home run of the season.

Martin had the only multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Lis, Palacios and Toby Gardenhire were both 1-for-2, Lis with a walk, a run and 2 RBIs. Felix Molina was 1-for-3.

Pawtucket 10 at Rochester 0

W: D. Hansack (4-8, 4.39); L: B. Duensing (4-8, 4.25)
HR: PAW: J. Van Every 3 (21), J. Lowrie 2 (5), G. Velazquez (3).

There is no mercy kill rule in baseball, so Mother Nature felt sorry for the Rochester Red Wings and instituted her own, chasing the teams off the field in the 8th inning.

The chances of a Red Wings comeback was probably pretty slim in any case.

Brian Duensing allowed 4 runs, earned, on 3 hits and a pair of walks over 5 innings. Casey Diagle and Julio DePaula fared even worse, as the Pawtucket bats knocked out ten runs on 8 hits over the Wings.

Meanwhile, offensively only Darnell McDonald and Randy Ruiz had the only hits for the Wings, with McDonald getting a double.

The Red Wings now welcome the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs to Frontier Field, for a 7:05 PM game on Monday. It will be a battle of the lefties as Francisco Liriano (4-2, 4.44) is the probable starter for the Wings against Lehigh's Travis Blackley (3-4, 4.66).

Fisher Cats sweep series at New Britain

Dunedin Blue Jays

New Hampshire 13 at New Britain 6

W: B. Magee (1-10, 6.04); L: A. Swarzak (3-5, 5.63)
HR: NHM: T. Snider (11), J. Butler (10), A. Mathews (6). NBR: D. Martin (5), D. Butera (3).

The New Britain Rock Cats has a huge collection of top prospects and high round draft picks in their line up. Unfortunately, they don't play like they do. The New Hamphshire Fisher Cats jumped all over Anthony Swarzak in route a 13-6 romp at New Britain Stadium.

Jacob Butler and Brian Jeroloman took back-to-back walks off Swarzak in the top of the 2nd inning. Eric Nelson then singled to load the bags. Kyle Phillips line drive to right scored Butler. Anthony Hatch would strike out swinging and Ryan Klosterman ground into a double play that took Jeroloman out at the plate.

Scott Campbell would single and Aaron Mathews followed up with his sixth home run of the season, over the center field wall. Travis Snider and Butler then hit back-to-back singles. Jeroloman followed that up with a line drive double to center to score Snider. Nelson would sacrifice in Bulter before Phillips would fly out and Hatch would strike out to retire the side.

Klosterman and Campbell opened up the top of the 4th with back to back singles, and would advance a base each on Dustin Martin's throw. Mathews then sacrificed in Klosterman. Snider's single would drive in Campbell. Yohan Pino would be called into the game at that point, replace Swarzak, who had surrendered 8 runs on 10 hits and a pair of walks while striking out 2 in 3.1 innings worth of work. Pino would get Butler out on strikes, but Jeroloman would double off him to drive in Snider. Nelson would ground out to send the Fisher Cats on the defense.

Erik Lis would double for New Britain and following a fly out to Brock Peterson, David Winfree would single. Felix Molina then tripled to drive in the pair, and Drew Butera followed that up with his 3rd home run of the season, to give the Rock Cats 4. Following a ground out to Brian Dinkelman, Dustin Martin would make it an 8-5 game with his fifth home run of the season, a solo shot over the right field fence. Toby Gardenhire would go down on strikes to end the inning.

Both teams would catnap for a couple of innings. Nielsen then drew a walk in the top of the 7th. Phillips would double him in, but the former Miracle who is known as being one of the slowest players in professional baseball, was taken out at 3rd on the throw.

David Harang would replace Brandon Magee in the bottom of the 7th. Dinkelman, Martin and Gardenhire would all hit back to back singles which plated Dinkelman. Danny Valencia and Lis would both strike out, and Seth Overbey would come in to get Peterson to ground into a force out. The score was now 9-6 in favor of the Fishers.

Frank Mata would replace Pino for the top of the 8th, and allowed a walk to Campbell. Mathews then double him in. Travis Snider would go yard over the center field wall, his 11th of the season and Butler followed suite, for his 10th home run of the season. Jeroloman would draw a walk as did Nelson, but Phillips would fly out and Hatch ground into a double play to end New Hampshire's threat.

Martin and Gardenhire went 3-for-5 at the top of the order, Martin with a run and a run batted in, and Gardenhire with a RBI. Lis and Butera were 2-for-4 with a run each,Butera with a pair of RBIs as well. Winfree, Molina and Dinkelman all finished up 1-for-4 with a run each, Molina with a pair of RBIs as well.

The Fisher Cats sweep the series, but never fear! There's still a chance for revenge as the two teams meet tomorrow. They now switch over to MerchantsAuto.com Stadium for a 3-game set. Left-hander Ricky Romero (3-4, 6.34) will pitch for New Hampshire against New Britain right-hander Zach Ward (2-2, 2.53).

Rochester Red Wings

Rochester 4 at Louisville 1

W: P. Humber (4-6, 5.19); L: J. Fogg (0-1, 3.00); SV: C. Daigle (1)
HR: None.

Fogg wasn't the only weather putting in an appearance at Louisville Slugger Stadium Thursday as rain held the start of the contest between the Rochester Red Wings and the Louisville Bats up by 2-and-a-half hours.

Phil Humber picked up only his fourth win this season, limiting the Louisville Bats to only 5 hits and a pair of walks over 5 innings, while striking out 6. Meanwhile, this counterpart, Josh Fogg, worked all nine innings, allowing 4 runs, 3 earned on 10 hits while striking out 6.

The Red Wings jumped on Fogg early, with Tommy Watkins tripling in the first inning, then coming home on Matt Macri's ground out. The top of the 2nd would see Sergio Santos reach on a throwing error then advance to 2nd. Jason Pridie would triple him in.

In the 3rd, Garrett Jones doubled, moved to 3rd on Randy Ruiz ground out, and came in on a Santos single.

Casey Daigle would allow Andy Green a double out to center field in the bottom of the 8th. Chris Dickerson would move him to 2rd. Dickerson would then go for his 14th stolen base of the season. A throwing error by Ryan Jorgensen sent the ball into the outfield and allowed Green to come home for the only Bats run.

Randy Ruiz tripled in the top of the ninth. Alejandro Machado would come in as a pinch runner and a sac-fly by Santos would bring him home the Red Wings' fourth run.

Pridie went 4-for-4 at the plate with 1 RBI, while Denard Span was 2-for-4.

New Hampshire weasels their way past Rock Cats

New Hampshire 4 at New Britain 2

W: S. Richmond (5-8, 4.92); L: K. Aselton (3-2, 5.03); SV: Z. Dials (10)
HR: None.

Kyle Aselton's second AA start went some what better than the first, but he still ended up taking the loss as the New Hampshire Fisher Cats doubled up the New Britain Rock Cats, 4-2.

Jacob Butler and Ryan Patterson both singled to start off the top of the 2nd. Scott Campbell then took a walk off Aselton to load the bags. Eric Nielsen would single out to left to bring in two. Rochester falls short in slugfest

Rochester Red Wings

Louisville 10 at Rochester 9

W: M. Belisle (4-0, 5.29); L: D. Graves (3-2, 5.40); SV: J. Adkins (14)
HR: LOU: K. Barker (9), D. Anderson (4), J. Keppinger (1). ROC: C. Basak (6).

Twins correspondent Kelly Thesier in her recent mailbag tackles the question of calling up Danny Graves and where he might fit in the Twins roster.

After Jay Rainville and Oswaldo Sosa earned a demotion by winning their last starts, I'd say that after giving up 9 runs (7 earned) on 8 hits and one walk over two innings, Graves sounds like a prime candidate for starter material to me. Yes, yes, I know. Sour grapes and all that.

But honestly, despite their pitching staff taking a drubbing, the Rochester Red Wings battled back against the Louisville Bats in slug fest, falling just a little short in the end.

Kevin Barker hit a grand slam home run over the center field wall off Graves, to give the Bats a 5-0 lead. Norris Hopper had lead off the inning with a double, moved to 3rd on a fielding error by Trevor Plouffe and came home on a fielding error by Chris Basak. Those same errors also put Jeff Keepinger and Drew Anderson on base and a Ryan Hanigan single loaded the bags just in time for Barker to go Bang.

Rochester answered back with Denard Span leading off with a walk. He's be caught stealing however, so it would Jason Pridie's single that got the offense going. Pride then stole 2nd, which allowed room for a walk to Garrett Jones. Randy Ruiz was hit by pitch, loading the bags. Sergio Santos then doubled to drive in Pridie and Jones, making the score look a little more respectable at 5-2.

Keppinger hit a solo shot home run off Graves in the second.

Basak answered back in the bottom of the second, sending a ball over the left field wall. Span would double then come home on a wild pitch by Justin Mullett. Pridie singled and McDonald walked before Jones single would drive in the Wings' right fielder. Jones would be taken out at 2nd on the play, but Randy Ruiz followed it up with a walk. Santos then doubled to drive in McDonald before Trevor Plouffe would line out to end the inning.

Graves would allow back-to-back singles to Barker and Adam Rosales before a coaching visit to the mound paused things for a moment. Once they resumed, Luis Bolivar singled to load the bases and Stan Cliburn pulled Graves in favor of Carmen Cali. Cali would hit Andy Green with a pitch to force in a run, then give up a single to Michael Griffin that brought in two more runners. He would get Hopper to strike out swinging and Keppinger to ground into a double play however to retire the side.

Drew Anderson would go yard off Cali in the top of the fourth. That also, mercifully ended the Bats scoring and it was now up to the Wings to catch up.

With one out in the bottom of the 5th, Plouffe would single, then move to 3rd on Basak's double. Ryan Jorgenson walked to load the bags, and a single by Span brought in Plouffe. However Bats reliever Todd Coffey would get Pridie and McDonald out on strikes to end the inning, stranding the remaining runners.

Ruiz would double in the bottom of the sixth, moving to 3rd on a Santos ground out and scoring on a line drive by Plouffe.

With two outs on the board on the bottom of the eighth, Basak and Jorgensen would hit back-to-back singles. Span would then hit a line drive to plate Basak before Pridie ground out to end the inning.

They need just one run to tie in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't find it, despite a single to Ruiz.

Basak would finish up the game 4-for-5 with 2 runs and a run scored, Span was 3-for-5 with a walk, a run and 2 RBIs. Ruiz and Jorgensen were 2-for4, Ruiz with a run, Jorgensen with a walk. Santos and Pridies were both 2-for-6, Pridie with a pair of runs and Santos with 3 RBIs.

The league has Wednesday off. The Wings then hit the road, starting a four-game series against the Indianapolis Indians on Thursday, before visiting Louisville for another 4-game set.

Garrett Jones hit his seventh home run of the season Monday night, and his 65th as a Red Wing. Jones is just one home run shy of tying Luke Easter and John Valle for 9th all-time (66 home runs) on the Red Wings home run list and 12 away from tying Steve Bilko for 8th all-time (77 home runs). Jones has now hit safely in 14 of his last 15 games.

Red Wings sixth nixes Bats

Rochester Red Wings

Louisville 1 at Rochester 9

W: M. Gomez (2-1, 2.15); L: R. Ramirez (2-2, 5.88)
HR: ROC: G. Jones (7).

The Rochester Red Wings continued to look mighty at home, pulverizing the Louisville Bats 9-1. A big 6-run sixth inning would salt the game away for Rochester, after Julio DePaula and Mario Gomez combined for 5.1 innings of shut out baseball.

Denard Span returned to the line up, knocking a double to start out the game. He would get picked off at second though, so the Wings would have to wait until the bottom of the third for their first run.

Jeff Christy and Span drew back-to-back walks. Jason Pridie would ground into a force out which brought Christy in, took Span out at 2nd and Pridie at first. Following a walk to Darnell McDonald, Garrett Jones would ground out to end the inning.

Randy Ruiz led off the bottom of the six with a walk. Matt Beilsle would take over the mound for the Bats and allowed a single to Sergio Santos. Trevor Plouffe hit a sac bunt that moved the pair. Alejandro Machado would reach on a fielder's choice as the Bats tried to make a play at the plate. They failed however and Ruiz put what would be the game winning run on the board.

Following a ground out to Christy, Span singled to bring in Machado. Tyler Pelland would replace Beilsle on the mound and would issue a walk to Pridie. McDonald then doubled to bring in Span and Pridie. A single to Jones served to plate McDonald before Ruiz would be taken out on strikes.

Louis Bolivar would swing at Casey Daigle's wild pitch to strike out, but he made it to base safely while Christy chased down the ball. Andy Green then tripled him in to put the Bats on the board.

Span would single in the bottom of the 9th, and two outs later, Jones would go over the center field wall to add a pair more to the wings total.

Gomez picked up the win, pitching 2.1 innings of relief in which he allowed only one hit, and struck out 2. Span was 3-for-3 with a pair of runs and a RBI after recovering from a broken finger. McDonald and Jones were both 2-for-4 with a run each, McDonald with 2 runs scored, Jones with 3 runs scored.

The two teams finish up Tuesday with a 1:35 PM game before taking a league day off on Wednesday. Danny Graves (3-1, 3.89 ERA) gets the start against Louisville's Justin Mallett (2-1, 3.31).

Wings offense tops Clippers

Minnesota Twins,Spring Training
Denard Span during a Twins Spring Training Game

W: C. Cali (3-0, 4.00); L: T. Clippard (2-4, 4.79); SV: T. Lahey (5)
HR: COL: D. Wallace (1). ROC: D. Span (3).

Suddenly, the Rochester Red Wings have a bite! Naples native Carmen Cali picked up his 3rd win of the season as the Rochester bats came alive, pounding out 13 hits for 10 runs to top the Columbus Clippers 10-7.

Denard Span opened up with line drive single to right field, then stole 2nd base. Jason Pridie hit a sac-bunt that moved Span to 3rd, and Howie Clark would double him him.

The Twins kept things going when Garrett Jones doubled. A throwing error by Clippers pitcher Tyler Clippard put Jones and 3rd and Chris Basak, who'd been going for a sac-bunt, on first. After Tommy Watkins was called out on strikes, Ryan Jorgensen ground out to score Jones. Span then hit his 3rd home run of the season to add two more runs to the total, making it 4-0, Wings.

The Wing continued their offense ways in the bottom of the 3rd with Howie Clark doubling. Following a pop out to Brian Buscher, Randy Ruiz would single to drive in Clark, giving Rochester a five run lead.

They'd need that lead. Former Miracle Brian Duensing took the start and would work four innings limiting the Clippers to 4 hits and a walk, but striking out only 1. In the top of the fifth though, he ran out of steam, allowing a single to Ed Rogers and then David Wallace went yard to give the National farm team 2 runs. A missed catch by Randy Ruiz allowed Tommy Murphy to reach, followed by a bunt single by Ray Olmedo that moved Murphy to 3rd. Stu Cliburn would take a walk out to the mound to try to get Duensing calmed down, but the southpaw then walked Yurendell de Caster to load the bags. A line drive by Alex Escobar brought in Murphy. Duensing would get Pet Orr to ground into a double play, but Olmedo scored in the deal. Then Jason Dubois hit a double out to center to bring in de Caster, tying up the game.

It was at that point that Stan Cliburn came out and lifted Duensing, bringing in Cali to get the final out.

The wings made up for it though in the 5th, with Clark singling and Buscher walking. Both would be brought home when Jones followed up a Ruiz strike out by doubling in the pair.

With one out on the board in the top of the 6th, Wallace would double then come home on a Murphy line drive.

Rochester would take the run back though when Span doubled, then came home on a Pridie follow-up single.

Julio De Paula would take over for the 7th inning, going 3 up and three down, and the Wings went the same way with Jim Ed Warden on the mound for Columbus.

Larry Broadway would double off De Paula in the top of the 8th. Rogers ground out moved him to 3rd and a wild pitch saw him across the plate. Wallace then walked, which prompted Cliburn to bring in Tim Lahey to replace DePaula. Former Miracle Garrett Guzman would come in as a pinch runner for Wallace and would steal 2nd, but Olmedo's ground out retired the side.

Watkins hit line drive to right to get on the bags and moved to second on a Ryan Jorgensen sac bunt. Span would then be intentionally walked before Mike Bacsik would be brought in from the bullpen to replace Warden. Pridie's line drive brought in Watkins, while Span would come home on a Clark sac-fly. Despite a double by Buscher and an intentionally walk to Ruiz, the Wings would sit down after Jones ground out, stranding the runners.

Lahey struck out 2 and got Escobar to ground out to finish off the top of the 9th, giving the victory to the Wings.

Span and Clark were both 3-for-4, Span with 4 runs and 2 RBIs and Clark with 2 runs and 2 RBIs. Jones would go 2-for-4 with 1 run and 2 RBIs.

Span became the first Red Wings player to hit a home run in three consecutive games since Justin Morneau June 14-16, 2004. (Morneau also hit a home run in three straight 4/30-5/2, 2004 as did Chris Heintz 4/29-5/1, 2004.) If Span could hit a home run in four consecutive games he would become the first Red Wings player to do so since Sam Horn June 23-25, 1990. Horn hit six home runs during that four-game stretch.

The two teams rematch on Thursday and Friday with both games starting at 7:05 at Frontier Field.

Miracle get back in Win Column

Fort Myers Miracle

Fort Myers 10 at Sarasota 6

W: D. Guerra (4-1, 4.93); L: R. Gonzalez (2-2, 6.35)
HR: FTM: D. Valencia (4), E. Ovalle (3), R. Tosoni (1). SAR: J. Francisco 2 (7).

The Fort Myers Miracle out slugged the Sarasota Reds during a slug fest at Ed Smith Stadium Tuesday night. The teams had 22 combined hits.

With two outs on the board in the first inning, Danny Valencia drew a walk. Johnny Woodard then hit a line drive double to drive in Valencia, earning himself a ham sandwich in the process.

The Miracle would add three more runs in the third inning, when Brian Dinkelman and Rene Tosoni walked and Valencia tripled them in. After a Woodard strike out, Eddie Ovalle's sac fly brought in Valencia. Sadly Wilson Ramos beautiful double was wasted as Whit Robbins flew out to end the inning.

Ortiz would single in the top of the 4th and, with two outs on the board Rene Tosoni and Valencia would hit back-to-back homers, using the wind to take the ball over the center field wall. Valencia is making a strong case to find himself in the FSL All-Star game this June.

The Reds finally got to Deolis Guerra in the bottom of the 4th inning. Todd Frazier drew a walk and Juan Francisco hit his first home run of the game, his sixth of the season over the center field fence. Following a pop out to Heisey, Danny Dorn doubled out to Right, then came home on a Chris Denove single. Tosoni would try to relay the ball the first, but found the Red's dugout instead of Whit Robbins, allowing Denove to move to 2nd base. That would make the score 7-3 Miracle, but the Reds were not done.

Misael DeJesus replaced Rafael Gonzalez on the Reds mound for the top of the 5th. He would keep the Miracle largely quiet in that inning, allowing a walk to Robbins, hitting Danny Berg with a pitch, and then walking Yancarlos Ortiz to load the bags. Dinkelman would strike out though, leaving the ducks stranded.

Todd Frazier doubled in the bottom of the 5th and Francisco - who looks like he will be joining Mr. Valencia at the All-star game - hit his second home run of the game, his 7th of the season, over the right field fence. That made the score 7-5 and the Reds were again very much in the contest.

Tosoni would single in the top of the sixth, but would get caught stealing second. Woodard took a walk and Edward Ovalle homered over the left field wall, his 3rd yarder of the year, to make it 9-5 Miracle.

The top of the 7th would do it for the Miracle. With Ruben Medina on the mound, Robbins would get plunked by a pitch. Danny Berg ground into a force out that took down Whit, while Yancarlos Ortiz followed that up with a single, moving Berg to second. Dinkelman's line drive out to left scored Berg to make it 10-5.

Danny Vais replaced Guerra on the mound in the bottom of the sixth and allowed a pair of walks before retiring the side. He'd stay there for the seventh, getting Justin Turner to fly out and striking out Frazier and Drew Stubbs.

Slama came on it the 8th inning, allowing only a walk to Chris Denove to placate the Reds. A throwing error by Whit Robbins in the 9th allowed Michael DeJesus to reach, and progress to second. Slama would allow a single to Frazier that would plate DeJesus to give the Reds six, but he'd strike out Francisco and Stubbs to end the game.

Valencia, Tosoni, Ovalle and Ortiz were all 2-for-4 on the night; Valencia with 3 runs and 3 RBIs, Tonsoni with 2 runs and 2 runs scored, Ovalle with 1 run and 3 RBIs, and Ortiz with 1 run. Catcher Wilson Ramos was 2-for-5 at the plate.

The Miracle return home on the victory bus to Hammond Stadium to conclude the series. It's also Sanibel and Captiva Island Night at the ballpark with the Island Night parade starting at 6:00.

Normally we'd make the Reds walk over to Fort Myers, but because they won game one of the series, we'll let them ride on a bus too. But just for this one game.

Alex Burnett (2-1, 2.70) will be on the mound for a 7:05 first pitch, taking on Sarasota's Daniel Guerro (2-2, 5:68).

Clinton 5 at Beloit 7

W: S. Steedley (2-1, 1.54); L: H. Nelo (0-1, 3.86)
HR: CLI: M. Moreland (2).

The Snappers claimed game two of their four-game series with the LumberKings by a final of 7-5 with the help of Clinton reliever Adalberto Flores and his back-to-back balks in the bottom of the eighth inning. Flores and his LumberKings pitching staff allowed six of their seven runs in the last two innings to fall to the Snappers.

Ben Revere and Garrett Olson were both 2-for-4, Revere with 3 RBIs, Olson with a run. Joe Benson was 1-for-3 with 2 runs and a walk; Chris Parmelee was 0-for-2 with 2 strike outs, but with a pair of walks as well.

David Bromberg allowed 3 runs - earned - on seven hits and 2 walks while striking out 9 over 6 innings. Brad Tippett gave up 2 more runs on 2 hits and 1 walk while striking out 1 in 1.1 inning of relief.

Spencer Steedley picked up his 2nd win of the season, working 1.2 innings in relief, and striking out 2 to close the game.

Parmalee would draw a walk in the bottom of the 8th and be replaced by pinch runner Mark Dolenc. Danny Lehmann singled to bring in Garrett Olson who had doubled his way onto base, to tie up the game. A wild pitch by Flores put Dolenc on 3rd. After Steve Singleton lined into a double play, Joe Benson walked his way onto base. A balk by Flores allowed Dolenc to score to give Beloit the winning run. A wild pitch followed by another Flores balk saw Benson cross the plate for the insurance marker.

Game three of the series is Wednesday, starting at 6:30 PM Central Time.

HR: BIN: C. Stewart (3).

Back-to-back doubles in the 4th by Steve Tolleson and Dustin Martin put the Rock Cats on the board. In the fifth Felix Molina and Drew Butera hit back-to-back singles. Tolleson' ground out moved the pair and a wild pitch by the B-Met's Robert Parnell allowed Molina to score.

Six different New Britain batters had one hit each, with Brock Peterson, Erik Lis and Trevor Plouffe (who struck out twice) going without.

Columbus 7 at Rochester 5

W: C. Balester (4-2, 3.79); L: K. Mulvey (2-5, 3.89); SV: C. Manning (5)
HR: ROC: B. Buscher (5), D. Span (2).

Home runs by Brian Buscher and Denard Span did not help much, nor did out-hitting the Columbus Clippers as the Rochester Red Wings still fell, 7-5 at home.

New Britain managed 14 hits to Columbus' eleven, but the game was pretty much won by Columbus in the first inning. A fielding error by Howie Clark, a balk by Kevin Mulvey and doubles by Ryan Langerhans and Javi Herrera helped the Clippers to a 5 run lead. the Wings got 2 back in the bottom of the inning, one of Spans single shot homer. Buscher's fifth of the year gave them another run in the third, and they drew to within one run in the bottom of the 4th, when Howie Clark singled and was driven in by Chris Basak's double.

Ricky Barrett allowed walk to Herrera in top of the 6th. A sac bunt and a single saw him across the plate for what would prove to be the game winning run.

Span was 2-for-3 with 2 runs and 1 RBI in the slugfest, Darnell McDonald was 2-for-4 with a run, Buscher was 4-for-5 with a run and 3 RBIs, Clark was 2-for-4 with 1 run and Chris Basak was 3-for-4 with 1 run scored.

The two teams rematch Wednesday at 11:05 for a businessman's special.
