Pitching staff faulters against T-Rattlers

Wisconsin 12 at Beloit 6

Santos Arias would give up 5 runs, earned on 8 hits and walk, striking out 2, and would not make it out of the fifth inning, as the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers bit the Beloit Snappers for a 12-6 win.

Beloit would take an early lead with Jeanfred Brito doubling and Chris Cates singling off Rattler's starter Edward Paredes. Ben Revere then doubled Brito in, while a Juan Richardson single would plate Cates. Mark Dolenc ground out, scoring Revere. Solarte would ground out as well, and Allan De San Miguel struck out end the inning.

Things were looking good, early on.

Maximon Mendez singled in the top of the 3rd, and moved to 3rd on a Daniel Carroll fly ball single to right. Carroll then stole 2nd. Edilio Colina sacrificed in Mendez, but Carroll would be left stranded when Denny Almonte ground out.

Joseph Dunigan singled with one out in the top of the fourth, then stole 2nd. Juan Diaz took a walk, and Joe White singled to plate Dunigan. Isreal Nunez would be hit by a pitch, but Mendez popped out and Carroll ground out to prevent Wisconsin from tying the game.

Sadly, they'd do more than tie. Colina and Almonte took back-to-back singles off Arias before Liddi went down on strikes. Dunigan singled in Colina, which also lead to a pitch change. Henry Reyes would take over for Arias. Dunigan would steal 2nd then move to 3rd on a balk. Diaz singled him in and advanced to second on another balk. Joe White took a walk before Danny Hernandez was brought in to try to stop the Rattlers. He'd walk Nunez and Mendez, forcing in a run, and hit Carrol with a pitch to bring in another. Colina would pop out, but a wild pitch scored Nunez. Hernandez then walked Almonte before getting Liddi out on strikes.

Revere would single then steal 2nd, advancing to 3rd on a throwing error by Dunigan. A fielding error by Diaz allowed Juan Richardson to reach and Revere to score, but the game was 8-4 in favor of Wisconsin.

The teams exchanged sixth inning runs with Joe White singling in Diaz, and Brito tripling in De Lo. Wisconsin would lose Dunigan to an injury, but it did not stop the Rattlers offense.

Chris Anderson would allow a single to Meneses in the top of the 8th, and Diaz would reach on Anderson's throwing error during a force attempt. White and Nunez both singled to plate the pair, and Mendez would be hit by a pitch to load the bags. Carroll would walk to force in a run before Colina ground into a double play that took Nunez out at home. Almonte then ground out to retire the Snappers.

Cates, Revere and Richardson would all single in the bottom of the ninth, to give the Snappers one more run, but Dolenc would fly out and Solarte ground into a force out to end the contest.

Revere was 4-for-4 with a walk, a pair of runs, and a RBI to lead the Snappers offense. Brito, Cates and Richardson were all 2-for-5 with Brito taking a run and an RBI, Cates a pair of runs, and Richardson 3 runs scored. De Lo was 1-for-4 with a run to round out the hitting.

The Midwest League takes a day off on Tuesday. The Snappers head over to Indiana to take on the South Bend Silverhawks on Wednesday for a 3-game set. First pitch is set of 7:00 PM.

The Snappers lost more than just the game, as Ozzie Lewis was moved onto the DL with a wrist injury that has been bothering him all season. Drafted by the Twins in the 21st round of the 2007 draft, Lewis was named Appalachian League Player of the Year last season while a member of the Elizabethton Twins. Ozzie earned the award after hitting .323 with 18 doubles, nine home runs and 50 RBIs.

He has hit just .214 with four homers and 23 RBIs in 59 games for the Snappers this season, while trying to play through the nagging injury. (Snappers)

McCardell leaves Wizards spellbound

Beloit 6 at Fort Wayne 1

Mike McCardell pitched 7 innings of shut out baseball, scattering a pair of hits and a walk while striking out 9 to lead the Beloit Snappers to a 6-1 win over the Fort Wayne Wizards.

Chris Cates singled the the top of the fourth, right before Wizard's starter Jeremy McBryde hit Ben Revere with a pitch. Cates moved to 3rd on Deibinson Romero's fly out, which allowed the speedy Revere to steal 2nd. Rene Leverett's fly ball single to right drove the pair in to give the Snappers two.

That would be all they'd need with McCardell on the mound, but the Snappers helped themselves to a few more, just in case.

Mark Dolenc singled to lead off the top of the fifth. Estarlin De Los Santos went down on strikes before Jeanfred Brito singled to third. Cates would then hit a fly ball to right that drove in Dolenc and moved Brito to 3rd. He'd score off Revere's grounder to center, making it 4-0 Beloit.

Colt Hynes joined the game for the Wizards in the top of the sixth, and would get Leverett out on strikes and Ozzie Lewis to fly out before Greg Yersich belted a double. Dolenc's single to center would put Yerich over the plate to make it 5-0. Lewis would go yard in the top of the eighth to finish off the scoring for the Snappers.

Blake Martin replaced McCardell for the 8th and was greeted with a single by Yefri Carvajal. Andrew Parrino reached on a force attempt when Brito missed the catch. Martin would then get Luis Martinez to fly out and Brad Chalk to pop out before Robert Perry's single scored Carvajal for the Wizard's lone run.

Charles Nolte allowed a pair of singles in the bottom of the 9th, but kept the Wizards off the board, getting Parrino out on strikes to end the contest.

Cates, Lewis and Dolenc were all 2-for-4 with a run and a run scored in the contest.

The two teams rematch Friday night for a 6:00 PM Firework's game at Memorial Stadium. Wizard Wynn Pelzer (7-3, 3.16) will make his 15th start of the season for Fort Wayne, while David Bromberg (5-6, 5.42) goes to the mound for the Snappers.

Kingsport at Elizabethton - Suspended

The Appalachian League game between the Elizabethton Twins and the Kingsport Mets was postponed due to rain. It will be made up as part of a double header on July 26th. The first game will start at 6:00 PM with the second game starting about 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first. Both games will be 7 innings in length.

The Twins travel to Johnson City to face the J.C. Cardinals on Friday, with the first pitch set for 7:00 PM

Beloit tops Peoria in 10, heads to Clinton

A Sac-fly by Estarlin De Los Santos drove in MarK Dolenc for the game winning run in the 10th inning Sunday as the Beloit Snappers overcame the Peoria Chiefs, 4-1. It would what happened next that would be most memorable.

Dolenc and Allan de San Miguel had hit back-to-back singles that put runners at the corners. With the Aussie catcher still on the bags, Joe Benson then hit his fourth home run of the season to add a pair of insurance runs to the total.

It would be a tight game through out. Jonathan Wyatt singled for the Chiefs off Snappers starter Steve Hirschfeld. He'd then steal 2nd and advance to 3rd on a throwing error by catcher Greg Yersich. Nate Samson then singled to bring him home to put the Chiefs ahead.

The Snappers answered back immediately, with Ozzie Lewis singling, then moving to 2nd on a throwing error by Peoria starter Robert Hernandez on the pick off attempt. Newcomer Eric Santiago then singled to drive Lewis in, tying up the score.

It would stay that way for the rest of regulation. Hirschfeld would give up 7 hits and 1 walks while fanning one. The one walk was earned despite the error by Yersich. Chris Anderson replaced him in the sixth, with the lefty allowing 1 hit and striking out 2. Charles Nolte worked the next 1.2 innings, walking the bases loaded in the bottom of the 8th before Spencer Steedley came in to get Luis Baulista out at home on a fielder's choice.

He would still be on the mound when Benson went BOOM, earning the win while striking out 3.

Working as a designed hitter, de San Miguel would go 2-for-3 in the game with a double and a run. Benson, Chris Cates and Lewis were all 1-for-5, while Santiago and Yersich went 1-for-4. Dolenc was 1-for-3 with a walk.

The Snappers stay on the road, heading over to Clinton for a four-game series against the first half champion Lumber Kings. The first game is slated for a 7:00 PM start.

The Snappers announced Sunday that shortstop Eric Santiago has joined the team on the road. He had been playing with the Elizabethton Twins. The 6'0" tall, 185 lb, native of Puerto Rico went 1-for-8 at the plate for a .111 batting average in 3 games so far this season with the Appy League E-Twins.

Meanwhile, oft-injured shortstop Paul Kelly heads to the 7-day disabled list effective Saturday, June 21st, with a strained right hamstring. In two games with the Snappers this season Kelly has four hits in six at-bat. (Snappers)

Schmiesing slugs in three for E-Twins win

Elizabethton 2 at Pulaski 1

Andrew Schmiesing hit a two-run homer in the top of the fifth inning to stake the Elizabethton Twins to a 2 run lead. With Bobby Lanigan, Lee Martin and Mark Hamburger all turning in stellar performances on the mound, it would be all the E-Twins would need.

Lanigan worked four innings, limiting the Mariners rookies to 3 hits while striking out 7. Martin would come in for the next 3, picking up his first win of the season.

Dwight Dritton would single off Martin in the bottom of the sixth, then move to second on Guy Welsh's ground out. Kalian Sams would be taken out on strikes before Mario Martinez sent a ground ball out to center to plate Britton. Kris Sanchez would single as well, but Martinez would be caught stealing by catcher Alex Soto, to end the inning.

Nick Czyz would be on the mound when Jon Waltenbury took a walk in the top of the 8th. Rene Leveret singled and Waltenbury wheeled it to 3rd. Juan Richardson would hit a sac-fly to score the Canadian slugger for the insurance run.

Eric Santiago singled in the top of the 9th. With two outs on the board, Schmiesing then doubled him in to finish off things for the E-Twins.

Schmiesing and Evan Bigley were both 2-for-4, with everyone else in the line up getting at least one hit except for Richardson, who finished up 0-for-3 with a RBI and a strike out.

The two teams rematch Saturday night at Calfee Park with a 7:00 PM start time. Both pitchers are TBD.

Beloit 5 at Peoria 1

Louis Bautista would take a single shot home run off Beloit Snappers starter David Bromberg in the bottom of the 3rd, but the Chiefs saw little else in the way of offense. Bromberg worked 5.2 innings, allowing 8 hits and one walk while fanning 5 to lead the Snappers to their second win of the second half.

Brian Kirwan and Loek Van Mil combined for the next 2.1 innings and Spencer Steedly closed down the Chiefs to finish off the game.

The Snappers answered Bautista back in the top of th 4th. Paul Kelly would single but be taken out when Chris Parmelee ground into a force out. Deibinson Romero then doubled to move Parms to 3rd. Ozzie Lewis plated the former first round draft pick with a line drive to center that brought in Romero as well. Lewis would make it all the way to 3rd base, but Greg Yersich and Allan de San Miguel were both taken out on strikes end the Snappers scoring threat.

The game would stay close until the top of the 9th. Jon Mueller would take Romero and Lewis out on strikes before allowing a double to Yersich. De San Miguel reached on a fielding error, which moved Yersich to 3rd, and the pair would be tripled in by Estarlin De Los Santos. A throwing error by Jovan Rosa allowed Benson to reach and De Lo to score, before Chris Cates would ground out.

Kelly was 2-for-4 at the plate, while Benson was 2-for-5 in the lead off slot. Cates, Romero, Lewis, Yersich and De Lo were all 1-for-4, Romero and Yersich with a double and a run each, Lewis with 2 RBIs and De Lo with a run, a triple and 2 RBIs. Cates settled for being the one hit wonder of the contest.

Parmelee and de San Miguel were both 0-for-4 with a run each.

The series continues Saturday night at 6:30 PM with Kevin Kreier (2-1, 3.96) on the mound for Peoria against Beloit's Santos Arias (2-3, 2.22).

Beloit, Rochester win; Rock Cats fall to Sea Dogs

The Beloit Snappers topped the Burlington Bees 7-4 at home with light hitting Ozzie Lewis cranking his third ball of the year over the fence. Ben Revere also went yard for the Snappers.

David Lough would take David Bromberg deep in the first inning, putting ball over the left field wall to put the Bees on the board.

It was short lived lead however. Ben Revere would ground out to start, but Danny Lehmann reached on a fielding error. Garrett Olson singed out to right and Chris Parmelee took a walk to load the bags. Jair Fernandez's ground ball single would rive in two. Steve Singleton's line drive saw Parmelee across the plate. Ozzie Lewis would sent a ball out to left to score Fernandez. Singleton was taken out at 3rd on the play, and Greg Yersich would fly out to end the inning.

Beloit added to their lead in the bottom of the second, when Revere singled, then moved to 2nd on a throwing error by Bees 2nd baseman Alwin Perez. Olson would then double Revere in.

David Lough would be hit by a pitch to start the top of the 3rd. Mike Moustakas then double to put two men on. Jason Taylor's ground out plated Lough, while Moustakas would score on Jamar Waltons' sac-fly.

Lewis would go yard in the sixth and Revere's first home run in Snappers uniform made it 7-3.

Reliever Matt Williams would allow another Bees run in the top of the 8th, when Moustakas tripled then came home on Wilson Tucker's sacrifice.

Revere, Olson and Lewis were all 2-for-4 on the evening, Revere with 2 runs and 2 RBIs, Olson with 1 run and 1 RBI, and Lewis with a run and 2 RBIs.

The two teams rematch Saturday for double-header starting at 5:00 PM. Michael Tarsi (1-6, 6.84) should be on the mound for the Snappers in the first game. It's also cowgirl night and Fireworks Night #3.

Ryan Mullins gave up six runs, all earned, on 7 hits and 2 walks while striking out 3 over 4 innings. He gave up 4 home runs to the Portland Sea Dogs, who were quite sorry to see Armando Gabino replace him on the mound.

Steve Tolleson was 2-for-4 on the evening with a walk, a run and 2 RBIs. Walks also aided Matt Moses, who went 1-for-3 at the plate with a walk, 2 runs and 1 RBI. Dustin Martin would be hit by a pitch, going 1-for-3 at the plate, but gaining 2 runs.

Martin would get plunked at the top of the 5th inning, Drew Butera singled to follow him on base and Tolleson pushed Martin over the plate with a line drive single to ceter. Trevor Plouffe would reach on a failed force attempt that drove in Butera. Erik Lis would take a walk, but David Winfree ground into a double play that brought in Tolleson, for a 3-run inning.

The two teams rematch Saturday for a 1 PM game. Anthony Swarzak (2-1, 4.06) should be the starting pitcher for the Cats.

Rochester 6 at Pawtucket 4

Danny Graves got a quality start for Rochester, allowing 3 runs, all earned, on 4 hits and 2 walks over 6 innings.

Rochester would by 1 run until the 6th inning. Brian Buscher would take a walk, and Ryan Ruiz would follow that up with a single. A missed catch on a pick off attempt moved the pair. Garrett Jones would ground out, but brought in Buscher. A Jose Morales single then scored Ruiz. Sergio Santos singled his way onto base, and Ryan Joregenson would get plunked by a pitch to load the bags. Tommy Watkins single to center brought in 2 to give the Wings the lead.

Buscher hit his 7th home run of the season in the 4th inning. It was the only hit he'd have for the evening, but he also had 2 walks which lead to a pair of runs. Santos was 3-for-4 with 2 runs, Ruiz was 2-for-4 with 1 run, and Watkins was 2-for-5 in the leadoff spot with 3 RBIs.

The PawSox send David Pauley (5-2, 3.32 ERA) to the hill Saturday against the Red Wings’ Kevin Mulvey (2-6, 4.36). The game starts at 6:05 Eastern Time.
