Dogs fall before hot Javilina offense

Former Miracle hurler Jeff Manship (Minnesota) gave up 3 runs on four hits over three innings while fanning 3, putting the Desert Dogs in an early hole that they never recovered from. He'd take the loss, his first of the season for the defending Arizona Fall League champions.

The Dogs actually got on the board first, with Evan Frey (Arizona) taking a lead off walk. Eric Young (Colorado) would bunt into a force out, then stole 2nd. Following a ground out to J.P. Arencibia (Toronto), Sean Doolittle (Oakland) doubled to drive in Young.

Manship with drill former Sarasota Reds Drew Stubbs with a pitch to lead off, but got Carlos Triunfel (Seattle) to ground into a double play and Austin Jackson (NY Yankees) to fly out to get out of the inning. Juan Miranda (NY Yankees) singled to lead off the bottom of the second. Greg Halman (Seattle) singled, moving Miranda to 3rd. He'd then try to steal 2nd, and would have been caught, but an error Adrian Cardenas (Oakland) gave Halman the base. Manship would would get J.T. Hall (Tampa Bay) out on strikes, but then unleashed a wild pitch at scored Miranda, and put Halman on 3rd and Hall on first. Justin Turner (Cincinnati) would ground into a double play that served to plate Halman before Rob Johnson (Seattle) would go down on a foul tipped strike to end the inning.

Taylor Green (Milwaukee) doubled in the bottom of the 3rd before Manship could take Stubbs down on strikes. Triunfel then doubled as well, knocking in Green. Jackson would hit into a fielder's choice double play to end the inning.

Tony Barnette (Arizona) replaced Manship for the fourth, then gave way to Jeff Gray (Oakland) in the fifth.

Peoria struck again in the sixth with Zach Dials (Toronto) on the mound. Miranda tripled and was singled in by Halman. Hall singled as well before Turner and Johnson could be taken out on strikes. Mike McDonald (Oakland) would be summoned from the bullpen. Green would reach on a Josh Donaldson (Oakland) fielding error, which scored Halman as well, before Stubbs would be induced to hit into a ground out to end the inning.

McDonald returned to the mound for the bottom of the 7th, allowing a double to Truinfel to open things up. Jackson's ground out put Truinfel on 3rd, and Miranda would double him in, to make the score 6-1 in favor of the Javalinas.

The Dogs would finally get back onto the board in the 9th, with Doolittle singling off reliever Rob Manuel (Cincinnati), then moving to second on a wild pitch. Danny Valencia (Minnesota) singled to move Doolittle to 3rd, and a sac fly by Rusty Ryal (Arizona) would bring the South Dakota native home.

Chris Mason (Tampa Bay) would take over the pitching chores for Peoria in the ninth, getting Chris Nelson (Colorado) to ground out before giving up a walk to Ryan Patterson (Toronto). A fielding error by Stubbs allowed Scott Campbell (Toroto) to reach and Patterson to score. Eric Young's ground out would plate Campbell, but that was the all the Dogs would get despite a single to Young and walk to Doolittle.

Milwaukee's Jeremy Jeffress took the win for the Javelinas who remain unbeaten after three games.

Phoenix continues their string of night games, facing the Scottsdale Scorpions for a 7:05 PM MST contest Friday at Scottsdale Stadium.

Beloit Snappers' centerfielder Ben Revere was honored by Baseball America once again in their most recent issue after his impressive 2008 campaign. The speedy outfielder from Kentucky was rated as the 4th best prospect in the Midwest League, trailing Mike Moustakas (Burlington Bees), Neftali Feliz (Clinton LumberKings) and Jarrod Parker (South Bend Silver Hawks).

Revere had what may turn out to be the most successful season in Snappers’ history. The Twins’ 2007 first round draft pick ended up hitting .375 with 129 hits and 44 stolen bases while picking up the following awards:

- Midwest League Prospect of the Year
- Midwest League All-Star
- Midwest League Post-Season All-Star
- Best Batting Prospect (Baseball America)
- Best Strike Zone Judgment (Baseball America)

Miracle catcher Wilson Ramos as also honored by the magazine as the 8th best prospect in the Florida State League. Ramos batted .288 with 13 home runs and 23 doubles during the 2008 season for the FSL West Division Champions. Wilson also collected an impressive 130 hits in 452 at-bats.

Ramos was signed by the Twins as a non-drafted free agent on July 7th, 2004. In 73 games for the Snappers in 2007, Wilson hit .291 with eight homers, 17 doubles and 42 RBIs.

The honor often times leads to good things for the players chosen by the prestigious magazine. Five of the ten players listed in 2003 by Baseball America as the top prospects in the Midwest League are now playing at the major league level. Prince Fielder #1 (Beloit Snappers), Manny Parra #4 (Beloit Snappers), Joe Blanton #5 (Kane County Cougars), Joel Zumaya #6 (West Michigan Whitecaps) and Felix Pie #8 (Lansing Lugnuts) all called the Midwest League home at one time in their playing career.

Revere ended up leading the league in batting average (.375) and on-base percentage (.428), was second in stolen bases (44) and third in slugging percentage (.497). Ben also led the Snappers in average, hits (129), doubles (17), triples (10), stolen bases, on-base percentage and slugging percentage.

Brian Kirwan will rejoin the Snappers tonight after spending the last few months on the disabled list with a right shoulder/elbow injury. Kirwan will be in uniform in time for tonight’s game, as the Snappers take on the Kane County Cougars in game two of a four-game set at 7:00pm.

Prior to his injury, Brian was 4-4 with a 5.06 ERA in 13 appearances. Kirwan started 12 of those games totaling 64 innings and 30 strikeouts. The right-hander has allowed 77 hits and 36 earned runs during his time as a Snapper this year.

Brian was drafted by the Twins’ in the 11th round of the 2005 First-Year Player draft. He went 2-8 for the Snappers last year with a 5.30 ERA in 18 starts with 67 strikeouts and 37 walks. Kirwan is the lone returning starting pitcher from last year’s Western Division Championship club.

The move, effective today, puts Beloit’s active roster back at 24, one below the MWL maximum.

Rain suspends Sarasota Contest

The game between the Fort Myers Miracle and the Sarasota Red was suspended in the top of the first inning when a nasty thunderstorm blew up in the area. (Funny, it barely rained in the Cape!)

It will be played as part of a double header on Saturday starting at 4:00 PM. The second regularly scheduled game will be shortened to 7 innings and will start approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.

It's Dog's Night Out 3, Dogs will be admitted to the park for $5 each with the proceedes to benefit the Humane Society of Sarasota County. It's also Senior Saturday, featuring a $2 General Admission ticket for mature fans, 55 years young and over.

Miracle

Baseball will play it's last game at Holman Stadium in Dodgertown when the Palm Beach Cardinals take on the Vero Beach Rays on August 31. The Florida State League as confirmed the sale of the Vero Beach franchise to Ripken Baseball. The group has partnered with the Tampa Bay Rays and will move the High-A Rays affiliate to Port Charlotte for the 2009 season, which will also mark the first year of Tampa Bay's spring training at that facility.

While the sale has been approved, Ripken Baseball spokesman John Maroon declined comment, saying that "there are still some aspects of the deal that aren't complete."

The move will unbalance the 12 team Florida State League leaving 5 teams in the East Division while putting 7 in the West Division. A possible scenario would have Lakeland move over to the East Division. "Lakeland has had the experience of being in the East before and it was pretty expensive for them," team president Chuck Murphy was quoted as saying. The league may choose to re-align along North/South lines instead. That issue will be addressed on the League Meetings this fall.

There has been some interest in the Baltimore Orioles relocating their spring training facility to Dodgertown, but that will not happen until 2010 and will not affect their High-A team, the Frederick Keys which plays in the Carolina League. The Sarasota Reds will likely seek to relocate their High A team to the west coast when they move to Arizona in 2010, but a deal will have to be reached with a current Grapefruit League based franchise to play here.

What will happen with the Orioles and baseball in the city of Sarasota remains to be seen. A third possibility involves the move of the Red Sox spring training facility to either Sarasota or Orlando. The Red Sox have wanted back into the Florida State League and either city would allow them to relocate their High-A team. (MiLB.com)

Batting and Pitching: Two players who may well be in a Miracle uniform next season are the topic of a pair of articles on Twinsbaseball.com. First, the Twins take a look at Shooter Hunt, their 3rd pick, (31st overall - 1st round supplemental) in the 2008 first year player draft. Hunt, a New York Yankees fan, had hoped to go to that franchise but when they passed on him he was pleased to be selected by the Twins.

"I knew the Twins do a great job with their pitching staff," Hunt says in the online interview. "I knew a fair amount about the organization and all about their developmental system."

A converted catcher, Hunt has been pitching for only five years now and has experience control problems in college. The Twins are confident they can work out those issues.

"We've worked on a lot of stuff. We've really tried to harness my balance point," said Hunt. "And getting consistent with everything, which is my goal with everything. You have to be consistent to move up the ladder."

Hunt says that he is a baseball junkie. He doesn't golf or fish or anything, he just enjoys baseball and calls himself a student of the game.

"The first couple games just being around the team, it was like, 'This is what I do now.' This is what I've always wanted to do since I was three years old, and now it's time to get going." (Twinsbaseball.com)

Getting going is what center fielder Ben Revere does best. Especially when it involves his bat. The Twins first round pick (28th overall) in the 2007 draft has been very consistent with his bat in the Low A Beloit Snappers franchise. 73 games into the season, Revere is hitting .388, the highest overall in the full-season Minor Leagues. Former Miracle Terry Tiffee of the Triple-A Las Vegas 51s is second at .375 in 87 games.

Revere's bat and blazing speed are the center fielder's two biggest assets. He does however have some defensive issues involving his throwing that the Twins have been working on with him while he plays for Beloit. The online interview however does not dwell on these but on rather takes an in depth look at his batting style and what it might mean for the organization.

Look for Revere to be in the Miracle line up starting in April of 2009. It may be possible to get an earlier look at both players when Instructional League Baseball starts this fall. Stay tuned to MiracleFans.com for FIL information as it becomes available. (Twinsbaseball.com)

The Fort Myers Miracle are proud to announce that intern Ben Heil has been awarded the Florida State League scholarship. Each year the Miracle and the 11 other teams in the Florida State League partner with the Florida Marlins and award one deserving person from each club a $1,500 educational scholarship.

Heil, a native of Cape Coral , Florida is the son of Brian and Ann Marie. The current Florida Gulf Coast University junior interned with the Miracle this summer, learning the finer points of the team's extensive game day operations.

"Ben has been a pleasant addition to our staff this season. He is eager to learn and adjusts well to everything we throw at him," said Miracle General Manager Steve Gliner. "We feel he is a deserving recipient and I know he will use it to further his major in sports management."

The Florida Marlins have sponsored the program with the Florida State League the past nine years thru their Community Foundation and the Executive Director, Nancy Olson. The foundation has contributed $71,000 to this program.

The award is based both on financial need and minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be an employee of or the child or grandchild of an employee of the participating club during the 2008 Florida State League Season, and must be at least a high school junior by the 2008 Fall Term.

"The Miracle front office staff has allowed me the freedom to gain a knowledge of everything that goes into making them what they are today. They truly do live by the motto, "Fun is Good", said Heil, who even filled in as an emergency bat boy earlier this season.

League President Chuck Murphy stated: "This program is one of the best things we do in this League and I congratulate the General Managers on their dedication and emphasis in administering this program. The purpose of the program is to send a message that an education is key to success in life."

The scholarship winners will be guests of the Florida Marlins in pregame ceremonies at Dolphins Stadium on Sunday, August 17. The Marlins host the Chicago Cubs at 1:10 p.m.

Snappers offense lullabyed by Lugnuts pitching

Before they even get to the Miracle, the Twins prospects become used to losing to the Blue Jays prospects.

Welcome to Pohlman Field in Beloit where the Snappers managed only 3 hits against the Lansing Lugnuts.

Mike McCardell, a guy I fully expect to see in the Miracle line up next season, pitched very well, allowing only two runs on 6 hits and a walk while fanning 10 over six innings. It wasn't well enough though as the Snappers managed little or no offensive production.

David Cooper would walk before Kevin Ahrens flew out and Manuel Rodriguez struck out. Johermyn Chavez's line drive moved Cooper to second, and a double by Moises Sierra drove the pair in, putting the Luggies on the board.

Estarlin De Lo Santos doubled in the bottom of the fourth, and moved to 3rd Yangervis Solarte's sac bunt. Rene Leveret then sacrificed in De Lo for the lone Beloit Run.

Jonathan Jaspe singled in the top of the 8th off Beloit reliever Chris Anderson. Following a strike out to Cooper, Ahrens took a walk. Manuel Rodriguez's ground ball to right scored Jaspe, and signaled the end of Anderson's time on the mound. Nelson Prada called Charles Nolte out of the bullpen. After getting Chavez to fly out, Nolte would walk Sierra. With the bases loaded, he'd get Eric Eiland to ground into a force out, stranding the runners.

Aside from De Lo, Allan de San Miguel doubled for the Snappers, going 1-for-2 at the plate, while Cates, who was 1-for-3, contributed a single.

One of the other Beloit Snappers pitchers who's name has come up for promotion to the Miracle next season is David Bromberg. Bromberg was the unhappy participant in one of "those" games on Saturday, giving up 8 runs, 7 earned, on 10 runs a walk while fanning 4 over 3.1 innings.

Justin Jackson tripled to lead off for Lansing and John Tolisano drew a walk. David Cooper doubled Jackson in, and Manuel Rodriguez's ground ball single scored Tolisano and Cooper. After Kevin Ahrens was taken down on strikes, Bromberg unleashed a wild pitch that moved Rodriguez to 2nd. C.J. Ebarb then doubled the runner in. Jonathan Baksh reached on a fielding error by Chris Cates that put Ebarb on 3rd. A second wild pitch by Bromberg would allowed Ebarb to score. Happily, Bromberg finally got Moises Sierra and Eric Eiland to ground out to end the inning.

Jackson singled in the 2nd, and moved to 2nd on another wild pitch. Cooper's ground ball to center then plated him to make it 6-0 Luggies.

With one out on the board in the 3rd, Baksh doubled and a passed ball by Greg Yersich moved him to 3rd. Sierra would go down on strikes before Eiland singled Baksh in. A wild pitch by Bromberg put Eiland on second, but he got Jackson to fly out to end the inning.

A fielding error by Estarlin De Los Santos saw Tolisano reach in the top of the 4th, Cooper would go down on strikes before Bromberg uncorked another wild pitch, moving Tolisano to 2nd. Manuel Rodriguez doubled out to left to score Tolisano before Nelson Prada saw fit to get Mike Tarsi on to the mound. Tarsi would put Ahrens and Ebarb down on ground outs to get out of the inning.

The pitching change wasn't much of a respite as the Lugnuts added two more in the 5th and saw Sierra crack a solo-shot home run out of the park in the 7th.

Rene Leveret was 2-for-4 with a double, while Andrew Schmiesing and Ben Revere were both 1-for-3, with singles.

The Lugnuts look to sweep Sunday with the first pitch coming at 2:00 PM central time.

A correction to the information I had gotten last night, LEN3 is reporting in his blog that "Michael Cuddyer looks on his way to Class AAA Rochester on Monday for a bunch of rehab games, then will join the team when it returns from next week's road trip to Seattle and Kansas City." Too bad, we'd have like to see Cuddy-bear in a Miracle uni again.

Snappers fall in 10, ETwins win

It's almost to the point where if they can get through a game without anyone getting hurt, you have to consider it a victory. However, despite a tied game in the 7th, the Beloit Snappers lost in 10 innings Thursday to the South Bend Silverhawks.

Santos Arias took the loss, working out of the bullpen, perhaps to make room for Shooter Hunt in the rotation. Steve Hirschfield took the start working 6.1 innings.

Mark Dolnec singled off South Bend's Tom Layne in the top of the 2nd, followed Allan de San Miguel's line drive to left. Andrew Schmiesing reached on a force attempt, but a throwing error by shortstop Matthew Oxendine allowed Dolenc to score for the first Snappers run.

Joseph Batten homered in the bottom of the third to put the Silverhawks on the board.

In the bottom of the fifth, Jimmy Principe walked and Oxendine doubled to plate him, putting the Silverhawks on top.

Jeff Dietz replaced Layne in the 7th and after Dolenc lined out, hit de San Miguel with a pitch. Schmiesing reached on a fielding error. Jeanfred Brito came in as a pinch runner for Dirty, and Estarlin De Los Santos ground into a force out that moved Brito to 3rd and took out Schmiesing at second. De Lo then stole 2nd and a Ben Revere single plated the pair.

Oxendine would single off Hirschfeld in the bottom of the 7th and Batten followed suite. That would finish it for Hirschfeld, as Charles Nolte came in, looking for the final two outs in the inning. Collin Cowgill singled off the newcomer however, plating Oxendine to tie up the contest.

Martin would take over for Nolte and work the 8th, giving way to Arias with one out in the ninth. In the tenth, Arias would walk Chance Wheeless, and a bunt single by Elijah Rumle moved him to 3nd. A sac-bunt saw Wheeless to 3rd, and one out later, Oxendine singled to bring him in for the game winning run.

Revere was 3-for-5 with 2 RBIs, and Dolence was 2-for-4 with a run. Dirty was 1-for-2 at the plate, having the only other hit in the game for the Snappers.

The final game of the series is Friday at 7:30 pm as Silverbend looks for a sweep at Coveleski Stadium.

Greeneville 1 at Elizabethton 6

A strong outing by Dan Osterbrock and a five-run sixth inning put the Elizabethton Twins back in the win column Thursday night as they downed the Greeneville Astros 6-1.

Osterbrock worked 7 innings, giving up only 1 hit and a pair of walks during that time, while fanning a dozen.

Nick Romero would get plunked by a pitch to start out the bottom of the sixth, then found himself crossing the plate after Jon Waltenbury tripled him in. Mike Harrington doubled to plate Waltenbury before Evan Bigley went down on strikes. The Astros would gring in Arcenio Leon to replace Henry Villar on the mound, and Leon gave up a single to Jeff Lanning to drive in Harrington. A balk by Leon and a pair of wild pitches moved Lanning around the diamond and saw him score before Danny Rams drew a walk. Adam Severino singled, and Rams advanced to 3rd on a fielding error by Devon Torrence. James Beresford would go down on strikes before a wild pitch plated Rams for the fifth run.

Romero lead off the bottom of the 7th with a line drive double, and Waltenbury advanced him with a single. After Harrington went down on strikes a wild pitch by Leon scored Romero. Bigley would be hit by a pitch and Lanning walk before Rams ground into a double play to end the inning.

Scott Blevins would work a scoreless eighth, giving way to Mark Hamburger in the ninth. Torrence would take a walk to start out the inning and after a fly out to Albert Cartwright, Almonte walked as well. Heinze would go down on strikes before Ebert Rosario singled to scored Torrence, ending the E-Twins shut out bid.

Jeff Lanning was 2-for-2 with a walk, a run and a RBI, while Romero was 2-for-3 with a walk and a pair of runs. Sevarino went 2-for-4 while Waltenbury was 2-for-5 with a triple a run and a RBI. Harrington and Beresford were both 1-for-4 with doubles, Harrington with a run and a RBI as well, while Dominic De La Osa finished up 1-for-5, good for the one hit wonder of the game title.

The rubber match is Friday at 7:00 at Joe O'Brien Stadium. The E-Twins then host the Kingsport Mets for a three game series starting on Saturday.

Pitching staff faulters against T-Rattlers

Wisconsin 12 at Beloit 6

Santos Arias would give up 5 runs, earned on 8 hits and walk, striking out 2, and would not make it out of the fifth inning, as the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers bit the Beloit Snappers for a 12-6 win.

Beloit would take an early lead with Jeanfred Brito doubling and Chris Cates singling off Rattler's starter Edward Paredes. Ben Revere then doubled Brito in, while a Juan Richardson single would plate Cates. Mark Dolenc ground out, scoring Revere. Solarte would ground out as well, and Allan De San Miguel struck out end the inning.

Things were looking good, early on.

Maximon Mendez singled in the top of the 3rd, and moved to 3rd on a Daniel Carroll fly ball single to right. Carroll then stole 2nd. Edilio Colina sacrificed in Mendez, but Carroll would be left stranded when Denny Almonte ground out.

Joseph Dunigan singled with one out in the top of the fourth, then stole 2nd. Juan Diaz took a walk, and Joe White singled to plate Dunigan. Isreal Nunez would be hit by a pitch, but Mendez popped out and Carroll ground out to prevent Wisconsin from tying the game.

Sadly, they'd do more than tie. Colina and Almonte took back-to-back singles off Arias before Liddi went down on strikes. Dunigan singled in Colina, which also lead to a pitch change. Henry Reyes would take over for Arias. Dunigan would steal 2nd then move to 3rd on a balk. Diaz singled him in and advanced to second on another balk. Joe White took a walk before Danny Hernandez was brought in to try to stop the Rattlers. He'd walk Nunez and Mendez, forcing in a run, and hit Carrol with a pitch to bring in another. Colina would pop out, but a wild pitch scored Nunez. Hernandez then walked Almonte before getting Liddi out on strikes.

Revere would single then steal 2nd, advancing to 3rd on a throwing error by Dunigan. A fielding error by Diaz allowed Juan Richardson to reach and Revere to score, but the game was 8-4 in favor of Wisconsin.

The teams exchanged sixth inning runs with Joe White singling in Diaz, and Brito tripling in De Lo. Wisconsin would lose Dunigan to an injury, but it did not stop the Rattlers offense.

Chris Anderson would allow a single to Meneses in the top of the 8th, and Diaz would reach on Anderson's throwing error during a force attempt. White and Nunez both singled to plate the pair, and Mendez would be hit by a pitch to load the bags. Carroll would walk to force in a run before Colina ground into a double play that took Nunez out at home. Almonte then ground out to retire the Snappers.

Cates, Revere and Richardson would all single in the bottom of the ninth, to give the Snappers one more run, but Dolenc would fly out and Solarte ground into a force out to end the contest.

Revere was 4-for-4 with a walk, a pair of runs, and a RBI to lead the Snappers offense. Brito, Cates and Richardson were all 2-for-5 with Brito taking a run and an RBI, Cates a pair of runs, and Richardson 3 runs scored. De Lo was 1-for-4 with a run to round out the hitting.

The Midwest League takes a day off on Tuesday. The Snappers head over to Indiana to take on the South Bend Silverhawks on Wednesday for a 3-game set. First pitch is set of 7:00 PM.

The Snappers lost more than just the game, as Ozzie Lewis was moved onto the DL with a wrist injury that has been bothering him all season. Drafted by the Twins in the 21st round of the 2007 draft, Lewis was named Appalachian League Player of the Year last season while a member of the Elizabethton Twins. Ozzie earned the award after hitting .323 with 18 doubles, nine home runs and 50 RBIs.

He has hit just .214 with four homers and 23 RBIs in 59 games for the Snappers this season, while trying to play through the nagging injury. (Snappers)

Hirschfeld, Revere lead Snappers against T-Rattlers

Wisconsin 2 at Beloit 7

Steve Hirschfeld scattered four hits and a walk over 7 innings and struck out 8, holding the visiting Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to only one run, to lead the Beloit Snappers to a 7-2 win.

Daniel Carroll singled of Hirschfeld and stole 2nd to open up the game. Edilio Colina moved him on a sac-bunt and one out later Ronald Garth singled to plate him. A fielding error by Ben Revere put Garth to on 2nd, and Joseph Dunigan took a walk, but Hirschfeld got Juan Diaz to fly out to center to retire the T-Rattlers.

The bottom of the third saw Andrew Schmiesing single, then move to 2nd on Estarlin De Los Santos sac bunt. Chris Cates would be called out on strikes, but a Ben Revere single saw Schmiesing score to tie up the game.

Keith Meyer would replace Brett Lorin in the bottom of the sixth for Wisconsin and the Snappers took advantage of the pitching change. Ben Revere and Juan Richardson lead off with back-to-back singles. Mark Dolenc would then get plunked by a pitch to load up the bags. A Jeanfred Brito single scored Revere before Greg Yersich went down on strikes. Allan de San Miguel got hit by a pitch to load up the bags again. The Timber Rattlers got Natividad Dilone out of the bullpen to get the out of the jam, but he'd walk Schmiesing to force in a run before getting De Lo to ground into a double play.

In the bottom of the 7th, Chris Cates would single, moved to second on Revere's sac bunt and to 3rd on balk. Juan Richardson then sacrificed him in to add another run to the Snappers total, for a 5-1 advantage.

Brito and Yersch opened up the bottom of the 8th with back-to-back walks while Dilone walked back to the dugout and Jeff Dunbar took his place on the mound. Dirty's sac-bunt advanced the runners and a sac-fly by Schmiesing brought in Brito. De Lo then singled to plate Yersich to end Beloit's offense for the game.

Danny Hernandez worked one inning of relief, walking 2 and striking out 2. He'd be replaced by Charles Nolte at the top of the 9th. Notle would hit Garth with a pitch, and Alex Meneses came into run for the T-Rattlers designated hitter. A Dunigan single and a Diaz ground out plated Meneses for a brief T-Rattlers rally. Notle then got Alex Liddi and Isreal Nunez to ground out, ending the contest.

Revere and Brito finished up 2-for-3 with a run and run scored each. Richardson, Dolence and Yersich were all 1-for-3 with a run, Richardson with a RBI and Dolenc with a walk. Schmiesing was 1-for-2 with a walk, a run and 2 RBIs, and De Lo finished up 1-for-4 with a run scored. Cates was 1-for-5 with a run.

Game two of the series is Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM. Mike Tarsi (4-9, 5.50) will throw out the first pitch while the T-Rattlers will throw Jake Wild (3-6, 4.45) at the Snappers.

West Michigan 7 at Beloit 11

It is odd for Mike McCardell to give up any runs, let alone five, but that is exactly what happened during a slug fest between the Beloit Snappers and the West Michigan Whitecaps.

Jordan Newton doubled for the Whitecaps off McCardell with one out in the top of the 2nd inning. Hayton Parrott would go down on strikes before McCardell hit Keith Stein with a pitch. Justin Henry's grounder out to center scored Newton, and Brandon Douglas followed it up with a home run out to left, to give West Michigan 4 runs. Ron Bourquin took a walk before Alex Avila flew out to give Beloit a chance to bat.

With two outs on the board in the bottom of the 3rd, Estarlin De Los Santos singled off West Michigan's Paul Nardozzi. Chris Cates then drew a walk. Ben Revere doubled to drive in the pair, cutting the Whitecaps' lead in half.

Mark Dolenc and Ramon Santana would hit back-to-back singles in the bottom of the 4th before Greg Yersich went down on strikes. Allan de San Miguel would get plunked by a pitch to load the bags, and Andrew Schmiesing walked to force in a run. De Lo singles, driving in Santana and Dirty. Andrew Hess replaced Nardozzi at that point and would get Chris Cates to ground out before allowing a double to Revere that cleaned off the bags, making it 7-4 Beloit.

The Whitecaps came charging back with Douglas singling and Bourquin doubling to put two men on. Avila would go down on a sac-fly to score Douglas.

In the bottom of the stanza, Dolenc went down on strikes before Santana was hit by a pitch. Yersich then doubled putting a pair of men in scoring position. Dirty would pop out before Schmiesing walked to load the bags. De Lo would reach on a fielding error by Douglas that scored Santana and Yersich to give the Snappers 9, a four run lead over the Tiger's farm team.

Charles Nolte would take over the mound in the top of the sixth and get two men out before Henry doubled. Douglas would reach on a throwing error by Cates that also brought Henry home, cutting Beloit's lead to three.

The Snappers would lose the recently returned Santana to a leg injury in the 7th inning. Jeanfred Brito would replace Santana as designed hitter, but it was a blow to already heavily injured Snappers squad.

With one out on the board, Henry would single off Blake Martin. Douglas doubled him in to make it 9-7 Beloit.

The Snappers would take advantage of Noah Krol however, with De Lo singling and Cates getting plunked by a pitch to follow him onto base. The pair would advance on Revere's ground out and a wild pitch by Krol saw De Lo across the plate. Deibinson Romero singled to plate Cates before Dolenc poped into a double play to end the inning.

Martin would strike out two of the four batters he faced in the top of the 9th to end the contest.

De Lo was 3-for-5 with 3 runs and a pair of RBIs to lead the team offensively. Santana was right behind him, going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs before his injury. Revere and Romero were both 2-for-5, Revere with 4 RBIs and Romero with 1. Yersich finished off 1-for-4 with a double and a run, and Dolenc was 1-for-5 wit a run.

The Snappers look to sweep the three-game series on Friday at Pohlman Field, first pitch is due at 7:05 central time.

Dragons sweep Snappers

Beloit 4 at Dayton 5

Mike Tarsi allowed 5 runs on 10 hits and a walk while striking out six to take the loss for the Beloit Snappers who could quite get enough out of their late inning rally to overcome the Dayton Dragons.

Ozzie Lewis doubled in the top of the 2nd and Andrew Schmiesing doubled him in one out later to put the Snappers on the board first. After that it would be all Dragons for a while.

Logan Parker doubled in the bottom of the stanza and, after Jason Bour was called out on strikes, Angel Cabrera singled him in.

The bottom of the third brought a double from Zach Cozart, who was driven in by Neftali Soto's line drive single to put the Dragons on top by one.

Devin Mesoraco doubled to lead off the bottom of the 4th, and Parker singled him to 3rd. Angel Cabrera's grounder to left brought in Mesoraco, and a walk to Brandon Menchaca loaded the bags. Cozart went down on strikes, Soto singled to drive in Parker and Cabrera, making it 5-1 Dayton.

Enerio Del Rosario replaced Matthew Klinker on the mound for the Dragons in the top of the 7th, and would take a couple of quick ground outs. Mark Dolenc singled then stole 2nd. A throwing error by Bour moved him to 3rd , while a second error, this one by Parker, allowed Jeanfred Brito to reach and Dolenc to score. Chris Cates and Ben Revere hit back-to-back singles to score first Brito and then Cates. Deibinson Romero would reach on a fielding error that also sent Revere to 3rd, but the Dragons brought in Henry Arias to get the last out and the Snappers would get no more.

Schmiesing would go 2-for-4 with a double and a run, while Cates and Revere were 2-for-5 each, Cates with a run and Revere with a run scored. Brito and Lewis were both 1-for-4 with a run, Lewis with a double and Brito with a walk. Dolenc finished up 1-for-3 with a run.

That does it as the Dragons sweep the series. The Snappers now take a day off for MLB's All-Star game. They return to action on Wednesday at Pohlman Field, where they will host the West Michigan Whitecaps for a 3-game series. First pitch is due out at 7:00 PM.

Greeneville 3 at Elizabethton 5

The Elizabethton Twins were back in the win column, thanks in part to a stellar effort by Aussie starter Brad Tippett, who worked seven innings, scattering 6 hits and walk while striking out 8.

Jon Waltenbury got things started off when he when yard out to right center field, his 3 of the year, in the bottom of the first inning.

Adam Severino took a walk to open the bottom of the 3rd, and James Beresford singled. Dominic De La Osa singled to drive in Severino, while Beresford came home on a balk.

Juan Richardson singled in the bottom of the fourth and was plated by Angel Morales follow up double.

Patrick Urckfitz would replaces Henry Villar in the bottom of the sixth, and would still be on the mound in the seventh when Morales reached on a throwing error, then advanced to 2nd on a balk. Severino would go down on strikes, but Beresford drew a walk. De La Osa ground into a force out that took Morales out at 3rd, but Nick Romero's line drive would plate Beresford for the E-Twins five.

Danny Rondon worked the 8th for the E-Twins and gave way to Mark Hamburger in the 9th. With one out on the board, Hamburger gave up walks to Kody Hinze and Ebert Romero. Federico Hernandez ground into a force out that took Rosario out at 2nd, but a wild pitch by Hamburger advanced Hernandez. Devon Torrence then walked to fill the bases. Kyle Miller walked, forcing in a run, while Jose Alluve singled to plate two more. Hamburger finally got Ricardo Bonfante to pop put to end the contest.

Everyone in the line up had at least a single, except for Sevarino. No one had a multi-hit games.

The two teams rematch tomorrow with the first pitch due at 7:00 PM, one of the very few games being played on All-star Tuesday.

Elizabethton's Shooter Hunt was named the Appalachian League Pitcher of the Week for the week ended July 13. Hunt made the most of his five innings against Johnson City Friday, striking out 10 Cardinals and allowing no hits in his second start of the season. Hunt is still working on his endurance, but he hasn't done too badly as a starter, as he's yet to give up a hit in eight innings while recording 16 strikeouts.

Snappers stun Wizards

Beloit 13 at Fort Wayne 2

The Beloit Snapper offense erupted for 13 run on 13 hits to bury the Fort Wayne Wizards, 13-2.

David Bromberg worked seven scoreless innings for Beloit, allowing only 3 hits and a walk while striking out 9 - the sort of performance that got him named to the All-star game, but which as been lacking of late.

The Snaps began their offensive onslaught in the second inning, with Deibinson Romero reaching on a throwing error by Lance Zawadzki. Reve Leveret singled to move him to second and Mark Dolenc would get hit by a pitch. Allan de San Miguel hit into a force out that brought Romero and Leveret home, but took Dolenc out at 2nd. A throwing error by Lawadzki moved Dirty to 2nd. Andrew Schmiesing then reached on a fielding error that scored the Snappers Aussie catcher. Estarlin de Los Santos ground out and Jeanfred Brito struck out to end the inning.

Chris Cates opened the bottom of the 3rd with a line drive to right, and Ben Revere followed it up with a line drive to left. Romero would reach on force attempt to load the bags. Leveret hit into a force out that scored Cates and took Romero out at 2nd. Dolenc would go down on strikes before Dirty's line drive plated Revere. A throwing error by Danny Payne advanced the runners and Schmiesing doubled them in. De Lo took a walk but Brito ground out to give the Wizards a chance.

Cates opened the bottom of the 4th by reaching on a fielding error - one of seven the Wizards would make over the course of the game. Revere then singled and Romero would get hit by a pitch to load the bags up again. The Wizards finally called for a pitching change, replacing the heavily hit Wynn Petzer with Matt Teague. Teague did not fair much better however, as Leveret double off of him to clean off the bases. Dolenc would single to put two men on before Dirty lined out. Schmeising walked and De Lo would get hit by a pitch to again load up the baggies. Omar Gutierrez was pulled out of the bullpen to replace Teague and would get Brito to hit into a ground out that scored Dolenc. As the team batted around the order, Cates then ground out to end retire the Snappers with the score 12-0.

Things would calm down after that, and the Snappers would not score again until the top of the sixth with De Lo taking a walk with one out on the board. Brito flew out and Cates reached on a throwing error that also put De Lo over the plate.

The bottom of the 8th saw Dutchmen Loek Van Mil come into replace Bromberg. He'd get Yetri Carvajal to line out before waking Parrino. Anthony Contreras singled and wild pitch from Van Mil advanced the pair. Luis Martinez walked before Brad Chalk reached on a force attempt. A throwing error by Van Mil allowed Parrino to score and spoiled Beloit's shut out. Robert Perry would then sacrifice in Cantreras. Zawadzki would walk to load the bags before Van Mil would get Danny Payne to line to end the inning.

Danny Hernandez came in to close the game for the Snappers, striking out two.

Revere and Leveret where 3-for-5 at the plate, Revere with a walk and a pair of runs and Leveret with a double, 3 runs and 4 RBIs. Dolenc was 2-for-4 with a run and a run scored. Brito, Cates, Romero, and Dirty all had singles, while Schmeising had a double.

Having had their full of Wizards, the Beloit continues their trip through the realms of Myth to take on the Dragons in Daytona on Saturday. First pitch is due at 6:00 PM.

Elizabethton 3 at Johnson City 4

It would take 15 innings, but the Johnson City Cardinals slipped by the Elizabethton Twins 4-3.

The E-Twins got onto the board first when Dominic De La Osa singled, Nick Romero took a walk and Jon Waltenbury singled to load the bags. After Danny Rams went down on strikes, Michael Harrington sacrificed in De La Osa.

Shooter Hunt took the start on the mound for the Elizabethton and dealt through five innings, walking only 2 and striking out 10. Thom Wright would take over the sixth and the Cards saw their first hit when Brett Lilley singled. He'd not go far as Guillermo Toribio ground into a force out, Nico Vasquez's ground out to Toribio at 2nd, and Rams passed a ball, moving him to 3rd. Curt Smith then singled out to left to score Toribio, tying up the game.

And it would stay tied until the 14th inning. Santo Maertz came onto the mound for the Cards, and after a pop out to Bigley, Juan Richardson took a single off of him. A throwing error on the pick off attempt saw Richardson to 3rd. Angel Morales would get plunked by a pitch before James Beresford singled to drive in Richardson putting the Twins on top. But baseball is not sudden death. So the Cards got a chance.

Mark Hamburger was on the mound for the Twins and pitching well. He'd take Ivan Castro down on strikes before Edgar Lara singled. Jarred Bogany replaced Lara as a pinch runner, and Hamburger walked Osvaldo Morales. A passed ball by Alex Soto moved the pair, and a Paul Cruz ground out put Bogany over the plate.

On to the fifteenth inning. Waltenbury walked and Soto double. Harrington was issued an intentional walk to load the plate before Bigley went down on strikes. Richardson would single to drive in Waltenbury, but Soto would be taken out at home and Morales would strike out before more damage could be down.

Lee Martin replaced Hamburger on the mound and allowed a single to Lilley and walk to Toribio. Vasquez advanced the runners with a sac bunt, Martin then intentionally walked Curtis Smith. Invan Castro singled out to center to bring in Lilley and Toribio, ending the game as the Cards had home field advantage.

The teams rematch on Saturday, hopefully for a somewhat shorter contest, as I'm sure they are all worn out from this one. Game time is 7:00 PM Eastern.

DSL Twins Win, Snappers don't

Beloit 4 at Quad Cities 5

The Beloit Sappers fell behind early and could not quite catch up, as their eighth inning bat fest fell short and they would go on to lose, 5-4.

Quad Cities starter Nicholas Additon was not quite as stellar as he was the last time he faced the Beloit, lasting only 4.2 innings and giving up 3 hits and a pair of walks while striking out 5.

The River Bandits got on the board in the bottom of the 3rd when Jose Garcia doubled out to Ozzie Lewis. Adrion Chambers ground out, but Garcia scored on the play.

Danny Berlind would replace Arias in the bottom of the six, allowing a walk to Mike Foli and a double to Charles Kingrey. Following a ground out to Matthew Aburr, Francisco Rivera would single the pair in.

For Quad Cities, Matt Spade would replace Additon for 1.1 innings, allowing a hit and a walk. Mark Diapoules would come in for the 7th. Estarlin De Los Santos made it all the way to 3rd base after drawing a walk, but was stranded when Garrett Olson struck out swinging.

In the bottom of the stanza, Chambers reached on a fielding error by Singleton, then came home on a Foli triple. Foli would score on Charles Kingrey's follow up single to give the River Bandits 5. Berlind would walk Arburr and issue a wild pitch that put a runner on third, but got Francisco Rivera and Thomas Pham out on strikes to end the inning.

Chris Parmelee and Ozzie Lewis drew walks in the top of the 8th. Steve Singleton, who's been practicing so he can hit grand slams like his team mates when he makes it to the Miracle, sent a ball over the right field wall to score three. Danny Lehmann would get plunked by a pitch, move to 2nd on De Los Santos ground out, and be plated by a Ben Revere triple. Sadly, Wayne Daman would come in at that point, and get Chris Cates to ground out, stranding the tying run on base.

Loek Van Mil worked 1 inning to finish off the game, allowing 1 hit.

Olson and Singleton were both 2-for-5, Olson with a double, and Singleton with a run and 3 RBIs on the yard ball. Revere was 2-for-5 with a triple and an RBI, and Cates had a walk to go with his one hit at the plate.

The two teams rematch Saturday at Modern Woodman Park. The series concludes Sunday for a Father's Day special, Mother Nature permitting.

Ben Revere was named the Topps Player of the Month, sharing the honor with Kane county's Craig Italiano. Revere is batting a league leading .406 with 29 runs and 25 RBIs. He also has 12 double, 5 triples and 21 stolen bases on the year.

In May, he was hitting .433 with 11 doubles, five triples, on home run, 18 runs scored and 14 stolen bases. (Snappers)

Pedro Guerra worked six innings, allowing 1 run on 2 hits and a pair of walks while striking out 5 to keep the DSL Reds behind the DSL Twins. The Twins would go on to win 3-1.

Juan Blanco singled then moved to 2nd on a passed ball by Argenis Gonzalez. Xavier Gaonzalez ground out found him at 3rd, and he'd score on Yorby Martinez single to put the DSL Twins on the board in the first.

In the top of the 3rd Blanco would single again, then steal 2nd. Martinez would ground out, with Blanco at getting to 3rd on the play, so that Jairo Perez could single him in.

Talk about near Twin runs!

Sergio Guerrero doubled in the bottom of the 5th for the DSL Reds, moved to 3rd on Mario Martinez ground out, and would be plated by a second ground out, this one to Argenis Gonzalez.

In the top of the ninth, Jean Carlos Mercedes would single his way onto base with 2 outs, Eliel Sierra followed with a grounder to center and Felix Caro walked to load the bags. Another passed ball by Gonzalez would bring Mercedes in for the insurance run.

Blanco finished up 2-for-4 with 2 runs, the only Twin with multiple hits.

The DSL Twins (7-5) host the DSL Rockies (6-6) on Saturday for a 10:30 AM Dominican time game.

Snappers rally back for win

Cedar Rapids 5 at Beloit 6

The Beloit Snappers rallied back in the 7th inning to take a 6-5 win over the Cedar Rapid Kernels in the opener of a 4-game homestand.

Snapper catcher Jair Fernandez would be hit by a pitch to open up the bottom of the 2nd inning. Steve Singleton hit a line drive to right to follow him onto base and Ozzie Lewis drew a walk. Greg Yersich's line drive scored Fernandez and Singleton, and a sac-fly by Joe Benson brought in Lewis, giving Beloit an early 3-0 lead.

Gordon Gronkowski would double out to left for the Kernels in the top of the 4th. A fielding error by Chris Parmelee at 1st allowed Jeremy Moore onto base, putting runners at the corners. Julie Perez singled in Gronkowski, before Mike Tarsi got Andrew Romine out swinging. Cedar Rapids would then organize a double steal, but it didn't pay off as Anel De Los Santos struck out to end the inning.

Tyler Johnson walked in the top of the 5th for the Kernels, then stole 2nd. Jeff Gonzalez-Lopez also drew a walk. Hector Estrella would single in Johnson, but the Snappers managed a third base-second base double play to end the inning.

Jeremy Moore took a home run off Tarsi in the sixth tie up the contest. The lefty would finish up allowing 3 runs on six hits and 3 walks while striking out 7 over six innings, but would leave with a no decision.

Steve Hirschfield replaced Tarsi in the top of the 7th and issued a walk to Johnson, who then stole 2nd. After getting Clay Fuller out on Strikes, Gonzalez-Lopez would draw a walk. Johnson would be caught trying to steal third. Hector Estrella then doubled out to left to plate Gonzaelz-Lopez. Gonkowski followed that up with a double of his own to bring in Estrella, giving the Kernels a 5-3 lead.

Benson took a walk in the Bottom of the 7th. Revere singled his way onto base and Cates hit a sac-bunt to move the pair. However, Kernels pitcher Michael Davitt threw the ball into the outfield, allowing Benson and Revere to score and Cates to make it to 3rd on the play. A sac-fly by Garrett Olson brought in Cates for the game winning run.

Loek Van Mil would work 1.2 innings allowing 1 hit and 1 walk while stiking out 1. Matt Williams picked up his sixth save of the season, getting the final out to finish off the game.

Revere and Singleton were both 3-for-4 with a run, Lewis was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run. Yersich was 1-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and Parmelee was the one-hit wonder, going 1-for-4 at the plate with a pair of strike outs on the side.

Beloit closer Matt Williams was added to the Midwest league All-star game. The native of New South Wales, Australia, is 2-0 on the season with a 1.93 era in 37.1 innings pitched. He has 40 strike outs, and issued just 12 walks. Williams signed with the Twins as a non-drafted free agent in the 2004.

Maybe they forget to pack the bats when they travel? Whatever the case, the DSL Twins were shut out on the road for the third time this season, this time by the DSL Indians.

Adrian Salcedo allowed a pair of runs to the Indians in the 5th inning, on 2 hits and a walk while striking out 3. After walking Jesus Brito, Salcedo hit Joly Fermin with a ptich. Eliecer Cardenas would be brought into the game to replace Salcedo, and would give up a triple to Jose Cabera that scored the inherited runners.

Cardenas went on two allow to more run in the sixth inning on 4 hits and one walk while striking out 4. Argenis Martinez would tripe and Kelvin Diaz would homer to add two to the Indian's total.

For the Twins, second baseman Juan Blanco was 2-for-4 at the plate, catcher Jhonatan Arias and centerfielder Wilfy Gil had singles and Eliel Sierra was 1-for-4 at the plate with a double.

The DSL Twins take on the DSL Yankees2 at home on Tuesday with a 10:30 AM (Dominican time) start.

Clinton battles - literally - past Beloit

Sure he can hit, but how's his right hook?

Beloit 6 at Clinton 8

The Clinton Lumber Kings used a 3-run 8th inning to rally past the Beloit Snappers and win, 8-6

Beloit had taken the lead early, with a 5-fun second inning. Steve Singleton would lead off with walk and Joe Benson's bunt moved him to second. Following a strike out to Chris Parmelee, Danny Lehmann hit into a force out that left runners at the corners. Ramon Santana then walked to load the bags. Ben Revere would double to dive in the lot, putting 3 runs on the board. Venice, Florida, native Chris Cates hit is own double, trading places with Revere. In what seemed like a 2-for-Tuesday double fest, Garrett Olson then hit for an extra base, bringing in Cates. Ozzie Lewis would fly out to end the inning, leaving the Snappers with a five run lead.

Mike McCardell worked four scoreless inning for the Snappers. Following a ground out to Jose Felix in the bottom of the fifth, Matt Lawson bunt his way onto first. Miguel Alfanzo would be called out on strikes, but Engel Beltre hit a fly ball single to center and Renny Osuna took a walk to load up the bags for Clinton. Mitchell Morland then hit a grand slam, his fith of the year, to put the Lumber Kings back in the game.

McCardell would finish up with 4 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks while striking out 2 over five innings. Loek Van Mil would take over for the sixth inning.

In the top of the 7th, Santana and Revere hit back to back singles. Cates moved the pair on a sac-bunt. Following a pitching change, Garrett Olson would reach on a fielder's choice that took Santana out at the plate. Ozzie Lewis then singled to bring in Revere giving the Snappers another run.

It would not last long however as Beltre and Osuna hit back-to-back singles. Nelson Prada would call for Spencer Steedley from the bullpen to try to stop the Lumber Kings, but he would give up a single to Moreland to load the bags. Ian Gac struck out swinging before Timonthy Smith ground into a force out that scored Beltre. That's all that Clinton would get though, despite a walk to Jonathan Green and a wild pitch by Steedley.

Lawson would draw a walk to start the 8th inning. Alfonzo and Beltre both singled to load the bags before Renny Osuna ground into a force out that caught Lawson at home, saving the run. Steve Hirschfield would come in to replace Steedley. And Ian Gac singled out left, an interference call to Cates, and a throwing error by Lewis brought in three runs. At which point all hell broke loose.

A brawl started out on the field and a number of players received ejections including Lewis, pitcher Charles Nolte, catcher Greg Yersich, Singleton, and Lehmann. Four Clinton players also saw themselves tossed from the field. The Midwest League will like impose further sanctions after the incident is reviewed.

Benson would end up catching the rest of the game and pitcher Matt Williams would be pressing into service as a right fielder to finish out the contest.

Revere was 3-for-5 at the plate with a pair of runs and 3 RBIs, while Cates was 2-for-3 with a walk, a run and a run scored.

The Snappers begin a four-game series against the Quad City River Bandits at home starting at 4:00 PM On Sunday.

Snappers split pair with L-Kings

David Bromberg would give up 5 runs (4 earned) on six hits while striking out only 2. He'd last only 3 innings, which - needless to say - is a less than successful outing for the young Californian.

This combined with a lack of offense saw the visiting Beloit Snappers fall to the Clinton Lumber Kings, 6-2.

After 3 ground outs shut out the batting order in the first inning, Ian Gac homered to lead off the second. Bromberg would get Tim Smith out on a ground bunt, and both Jon Greene and Jose Felix on strikes. The third went equally well, with a pair of ground outs and a pop out.

In the bottom of the 4th, Renny Osuna reached on a throwing error by Garrett Olson. Mitchell Moreland then triple which brought in the Clinton runner. Gac and Smith both singled and a wild pitch moved the pair. Greene's single would drive in the pair. Felix knocked a line drive to center, which brought in Smith, and that also finished off Bromberg as Beloit field manager Nelson Prada removed him from the game in favor of Danny Hernandez.

Hernandez, who had started to come around in Fort Myers pitched a perfect 2 innings, allowing only 1 strike out. Charles Nolte would finish up on the mound, striking out 2 in the 7th inning.

The catch up problem fell to the Snappers bats,which were largely silent in the contest.

Ben Revere who went 3-for-3 at the plate, would triple in the top of the sixth inning, then come home on a Chris Cates sacrifice. Steve Singleton would go yard in the top of the 7th. That was it for the Snappers offense.

Revere's outing was notable as he hit 2 doubles and a triple, his average is now .410 on the season. Despite getting to Beloit a month late, he appears to be a shoe in for the Midwest League All-star game.

Chris Parmelee, Joe Benson and catcher Greg Yersich each collected a pair of strike outs in the game.

The Beloit Snappers faired better in the nightcap, collecting six runs on 9 hits. Southpaw Mike Tarsi turned in another solid inning, lasting six innings and giving up 1 run on six hits and 1 walk while striking out 7.

Ben Revere doubled, but would be taken out on a fielder's choice which allowed Joe Benson onto first base. Benson then stole 2nd, and wild pitch by L-Kings starter Fabio Castillo moved him to 3rd. Garrett Olson would hit into a ground out, which saw Benson cross the plate for the first Snapper run.

With one out on the board in the top of the second, Ramon Santana doubled. Mark Dolenc ground out, and Chris Cates walked before Revere singled to plate Santana.

Ian Gac would single to start off the bottom of the inning. Following a pop off to Tim Smith, Tarsi would attempt to pick off Gac, but the ball went astray and Gac moved to 2nd. Jon Greene would collect a walk before Justin Pickett doubled to score Gac. Greene would be taken out at home on the throw, but the play injured catcher Jair Fernandez, who was replaced by David Lehmann for the remainder of the contest.

Olson would single to start off the top of the third, but he'd get caught stealing. Chris Parmelee took a walk. Lehmann would strike out, but a wild pitch by Castillo allowed Parmelee to score. Santana then went yard over the left field wall for his 4th home run of the season. The Snappers were not finished though as Dolenc took a walk, then stole 2nd. Cates would hit a fly ball single to right which plated Dolenc, giving the Snappers six.

Matt Williams would take over for Tarsi in the 7th, and Smith would greet him with a single. Williams would take Greene out on strikes, but would plunk Pickett with a pitch. Matt Lawson then ground into a force out which moved Smith to 3rd. Miguel Alfonzo would single to plate Smith before Engel Beltre flew out to end the inning, and the contest.

Revere would go 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and an RBI. Santana was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs and RBIs. Parmelee, Olson, Steve Singleton and Cates each had solo hits for the visiting team.

The series continues on Saturday at Alliant Energy Field. Danny Berlind (3-4, 3.77) is the likely starter for the Snappers.

Notes: Blair Erickson has yet to pitch for the Miracle since the roster move that sent Mr. Hernandez to Beloit. There was some comment as to how long we'd keep 12 pitchers on the staff as they can't get enough work for them that way. I do not know if that is in any involved in Mr. Erickson's absence or not.

As for Revere getting promoted from Beloit, Kelly Thesier had this to say in her Twins Mailbag feature:

Revere has certainly made a strong impression since being called up to Beloit during the final week of April. In 26 games for the Snappers, Revere is batting .405 with a .445 on-base percentage. He also has recorded 14 stolen bases.

But does that mean Revere is in line for another call up anytime soon? That seems unlikely, considering how short his stint has been at Beloit. Revere, the Twins' first-round selection in last year's First-Year Player Draft, spent the 2007 season with the club's Gulf Coast Rookie League team.

The Twins have always been hesitant to move a player up too quickly through their system. So promoting Revere to Class A Fort Myers in the upcoming weeks is unlikely. The Twins have kept 2006 first-round pick Chris Parmelee at Beloit for a second straight season. Parmelee certainly hasn't had Revere's success, but I see the team letting Revere get a real chance to thrive at Beloit before trying to send him to another level and having to adjust once again.

Beloit Snappers sweep double header

Burlington 0 at Beloit 8

While the New Britain Rock Cats struggled to get two hits together for Anthony Swarzak, Mike Tarsi got more than enough run support from the Beloit Snappers. Not that he really needed it.

The lefty only allowed 2 hits over six innings, during which time he fanned 8, for a blanking of the Burlington Bees.

Joe Benson took a walk in the 1st and Chris Parmelee got plunked by a pitch to follow him onto the bases. Jair Fernandez's fly ball single would score Benson to put to the Snappers on the board early.

A Ben Revere double and a Benson Sac-bunt turning into another run in the bottom of the 3rd when second baseman Kyle Martin opted to go home with Garrett Olson's grounder, but he was not fast enough to prevent Revere from scoring.

Ozzie Lewis and Ramon Santana both singled in the bottom of the 4th, and Chris Cates sac-bunt moved the pair. Revere singled to bring in the pair. Benson would then single, moving Revere to 3rd. Garrett Olson's pop out would plate Revere, giving Beloit a five run lead.

Chris Chavez would finally replace Bees starter Danny Duffy, who'd given up 5 runs on 6 hits and 1 walk while fanning 7 over 4 innings. With one out on the board in the bottom of the 5th, Steve Singleton would be hit by a pitch. Lewis would triple him in, then crossed the plate on Santana's double. Following a Chris Cates fly out, Revere singled to drive in Santana.

Revere finished up 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and 3 RBIs, Benson was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run; Lewis and Santana were both 2-for-3 with a pair of runs and a RBI each.

Brad Tippett closed out the contest, allowing a single to Wilson Tucker in the top of the 7th.

Burlington 1 at Beloit 3

The Burlington Bees were a bit more offensively minded against Mike McCardell in the night cap, but the Beloit Snappers still batted their way to a win.

Ben Revere opened up the second game with a fly ball single, then stole 2nd. Garrett Olson then singled to plate the speedster, putting the Snappers on the board in the bottom of the first.

Walks to Olson, Chris Parmelee and Mark Dolenc loaded the bases in the 2nd. Steve Singleton would hit a sac fly to drive in Olson, and Dan Lehmann's fly ball to right scored Parmelee, adding two more to the total.

McCardell would issue a walk to Adrian Ortiz in the top of the 4th. Wilson Tucker singled to move him to second, while David Lough's fly out to center pushed him to 3rd. Mike Moustakas ground out, but Ortiz would cross the plate.

Steve Hirschfield entered the game at that point, getting the final out. McCardell would part with a hit and a walk for the one earned run, while fanning 5 over 3.2. Hirshfield gave up 3 hits and fanned 2 over the final 3.2 innings.

Revere was 2-for-4 with 1 run, while Olson was 1-for-1 with three walks, a run and a run scored.

More Bees in Beloit on Sunday starting at 2:00 PM central. The series concludes on Monday with another 2 PM game.

Beloit outslugs Chiefs

Peoria 8 at Beloit 9

The Beloit Snappers won a slug fest Saturday, pounding out 18 hits for 9 runs to overcome the Peoria Chiefs, 9-8. To a certain extend however, the Snappers were their own worst enemy, putting five errors on the board.

Santos Arias, who pitched last season for the GCL Twins, took the start, and worked 5.2 innings. He'd give up 5 runs - only three earned - on 6 hits and two walks while striking out 4.

Arias walked Jovan Rosa to start the second inning. He then got Cliff Anderson out on strikes, but Rosa would steal 2nd. Marquez Smith then doubled out to left to drive in Rosa. A fly ball single by Mario Mercedes brought in Smith. Mercedes would try to stretch the hit for a double, but was taken out at 2nd base.

The Snappers would take one back in the bottom of the 3rd. Mark Dolenc took a walk, then stole 2nd. Ben Revere's single moved Dolenc to 3rd and Chris Cate's ground ball bunt would score the Beloit left fielder.

Following back-to-back strike outs to Chris Parmelee and Joe Benson in the 4th, Steve Singleton would triple his way on to the bags. Danny Lehman's fly ball to center served ot plate him. Greg Yersich then doubled to score Lehmann, giving Beloit the lead.

It would a short lived one however, as Nate Samson reached on a throwing error by Snappers 3rd baseman Garrett Olson. Josh Donaldson and Rosa then hit back-to-back doubles off Santos. Rosa's would drive in two. He would try to make it to 3rd, but Benson rifled the ball in from right to get allow Olson to get the tag on Rosa.

The Daytona Cubs-to-be then added another point in the top of the 6th, with Anderson doubling. He'd move to 3rd on Smith's ground out. Mercees reached on a fielder's choice that had Anderson out at home. It would also take Arias out of the game, as Matt Williams came into replace the Dominican Republic native.

With one out on the board in the bottom of the sixth, Yersich singled. Revere and Cates then drew back-to-back walks to load the bags. Olson singled to drive in two to tie up the game again.

In the bottom of the 8th with Steve Vento on the mound for the Cubs affiliate, Benson would double, then cross the plate on a Singlton line drive to left to give Beloit the lead. That one run would prove to be the difference in the contest.

Following a Samson fly out, Donaldson would single out to center, and Rosa would reach on a throwing error by Ramon Santana. Donaldson would score on the play when Lehmann added his own throwing error. Anderson then singled to dive in Rosa. Blair Erickson would be brought to the mound to relieve Spencer Steedley, issuing a walk to Smith. A Mercedes single out to center would score Anderson, giving the Chief's eight runs on the board.

Dustin Sasser was told to close the game for the Chiefs, but Santana took a single off of him to start out the bottom of the stanza. Dolenc then reached on a force attempt that was foiled on a throwing error by Rosa. Revere's bunt single moved the pair around and loaded the bases. Cates would ground into a double play that plated Santana, and Olson would then double to bring in Dolenc. Pamelee's line drive to center would bring in Anderson, giving the Snappers the win and ending the contest.

Revere was 3-for-4 with a pair of walks and a run. Dolenc was 2-for-3 with a pair of walks and 3 runs. Singleton was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, and Olson was 3-for-6 with a run and 3 RBIs. Cates would go 2-for-5 with a RBI, and Parmelee would finish up 2-for-6 with an RBI.

The Snappers look for a sweep today at 2:00 PM central at Pohlman Field.
