GCL Twins sweep twin bill

Danny Rohlfing

GCL Orioles 4 at GCL Twins 7

W: E. Ibarra (4-0, 3.12); L: J. Moore (1-4, 2.98)
HR: TWI: D. Rohlfing (1).

GCL Orioles The Twins took an early lead despite a poor outing in the 7th by rehabbing pitcher Jay Sawatski.

Aaron Hicks singled. He'd then try to steal 2nd but would be caught out between bases. While they were playing pickle, Edinho Meyer threw the ball passed second and into the outfield, allowing Hicks to get to 2nd base. Anderson Hidalgo singled sending Hicks to 3rd. Rene Tosoni, who has been rehabbing a broken foot, would go down on strikes. Andres Diaz doubled in Hicks and a passed ball by Janensis Guerrero scored Hidalgo. Reggie Williams singled in Diaz to give the Twins a 3-0 lead. Williams would try to steal 2nd, but this time he was caught. Danny Rohlfing would go down on strikes to send the Orioles to the plate.

Tosoni singled his way onto base. Reggie Williams then tripled in Tosoni, although for Reggie, it was a very close call at 3rd. Danny Rohlfing then sent a ball out to right that cleared the fence, bringing Williams in, making it 6-0 Twins.

Jerome Hoes singled out to right, and Meyer took a walk. Twins starter Edgar Ibarra took Garabez Rosa and Omar Casamayor down on strikes. Grolman Gonzalez singled, sending Hoes across the plate to give the O's 1. Meyer would be taken out at second on the play, retiring the side.

Hoes singled then stole 2n in the top of the sixth. Meyer's ground out moved Hoes to 3rd and Rosa singled him in. Casamayor would single as well but Gonzalez flew out and Derek Gianakas ground out to send the Twins up to bat.

Robert Bundy would take over the mound from Orioles starter Justin Moore for the bottom half of the stanza. Danny Rohlfing tripled out to center and came home on Tyler Ladendorf's single. Two outs later, Aaron Hicks' single moved Ladendroft to 3nd, and a wild pitch by Bundy put Ladendorf on 3rd and Hicks on 2nd. Anderson Hidalgo would fly out however, ending the inning with two men left on base.

Janensis Guerrero tripled off Jay Sawatski in the top of the 7th. Xavier Avery singled him in. Francisco Mejia ground into a double play however. A missed catching error by Diaz at first allowed Hoes to reach and Sawatski would hit Meyer with a pitch. Javier Santana would go in to run for Meyer. Rosa singled to fill the bags, and a wild pitch by Sawatski allowed Hoes to score. Casamayor would go down on strikes however, to give the Twins a win.

Rohlfing, the game's yardbird, was 2-for-3 with a triple, a pair of runs and two RBIs. Williams was also 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple but only one run to go with his pair of runs scored. Hicks was 2-for-4 with a run, and Tosoni and Diaz were each 1-for-3 with a run, Diaz with a double and a RBI as well. Hidalgo was 1-for-4 with a run.

Ladendorf was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run while Lara was 1-for3, becoming the games one hit wonder.

Ibarra scattered six hits and a pair of walks over six innings, allowing 2 runs, both earned while fanning 4.

The teams would break for lunch before the start of game two.

GCL Twins 2 at GCL Orioles 1

W: K. Nanney (4-1, 1.65); L: J. De La Cruz (0-2, 3.15); SV: K. Mota (12)
HR: None.

GCL Twins Khol Nanney came back from lunch to announce he'd made a bagel. "Well, there were some bagels sitting there and some peanut butter, so I put some peanut butter on the bagel. That's alright, isn't it." And if it wasn't? Well...let's not go there.

The Twins bats cooled off considerable in this one, but they still achieved the goal, which was winning the game. We've already secured our playoff berth, but we want to win the division as no one wants to play the elimination game on the road.

Jon Goncalves took a walk in the top of the first. Juan Sanchez went down on strikes, as did Danny Ortiz. Orioles' starter Sam Taveras would unleash a wild pitch that sent Goncalves to 2nd. Mike Gonzales then spanked a ball out to center to score Goncalves.

Mike Tonkin took the start for the Twins and worked the first four innings, allowing only 3 hits and a walk while striking out only 1.

Nanney, the bagel thief, would come in for the fifth. Michael Gioioso singled a line drive out to center and Francisco Majia's sac-bunt moved him to 2nd. A passed ball by Jae-Hyung Jang advanced the runner to 3rd. Xavier Avery would draw a walk before Larry Rivera hit into a ground out, plating Gioioso to tie the game.

The top of the sixth would see a number of pitching changes for the O's. Jario De La Cruz started out and walked Juan Sanchez. Ortiz's bunt would pop out and be caught by Gioioso, coming in from 3rd in foul territory. Sanchez then stole 2nd base and Rohlfing, who had replaced Gonzales in the line up ad was playing at first, struck out. Brian Anderson came in to replace De La Cruz and walked Hyeong-rok Choi. They Orioles then gave the ball to Leonardo Madrigal who walked Reggie Williams, loading up the bases. Miguel Achil was summoned from the bullpen, and walked Jae-Hyung Jang to force in Sanchez for what was to prove the game winning run.

Brian Kirwan pitched the bottom of the sixth on a rehab assignment from Beloit. Getting Dennis Perez and Justin Martin to both fly out and striking out Jose Kianes. However, J.J. passed the ball on the third strike and Kianes went to first. Javier Santana would reach on Sanchez's fielding error before Kirwan could get Gioioso out on strikes.

Kelvin Mota allowed a single in the bottom of the 7th - the O's had home field advantage in this contest - but got Avery and Rivera to fly out and sat Garabez Rosa down on strikes, ending the contest.

Gonzales was 2-for-2 with a RBI before being replaced by Danny Rohlfing in the top of the fourth. He "tweaked" something, and was on the bench by the end of the game, but it appeared to be minor. Williams was 1-for-2 with a double and a RBI. Goncalves and Sanchez, both 0-for-3 with walks, had a run each.

The Pirates were idle, so the Twins are again one game back from their division rival with three left to play.

Jose Marzan was at the game and confirmed that the DSL playoff format was best of 3, best of 3 and best of 5 for the upcoming playoffs. The DSL Twins host the DSL Mariners in round one starting on Monday at 10:30 AM.

I imposed upon Ian Mopas to take the rest of the pictures into the clubhouse for me, and hand them out. All of the boys thanked me except, predictably enough, Danny Ortiz who has never said two words to me, and Josmir Pinto, who I did not see. I felt bad because Angelo Sanchez was the odd pitcher out this year and I didn't get to see him throw. Is seems like I get one every year and I feel bad that I don't have shots. I can only say that I'll try to make it up to him in Spring Training.

I did pretty good autographing wise, getting Xavier Avery, Larry Rivera, Jerome Hoes, Luis Ramirez and Justin Martin from the Orioles. I was looking for Edwin Cintron and Vito Frabizio as well, but they were not with the team on this trip. Rivera, especially liked his layout which left me fielding questions from about half the rest of the team who wanted to know when I was going to one for them. I will, but as I won't bet likely to get any more autographs until Fall Instruction League, it won't be until after the this next weekend when the Miracle's six game homestand concludes.

For the Twins I got Pat Neshek (x4) on rehab, Deibinson Romero (x2), Brian Kirwan (x2), Miguel Munoz, Andres Diaz, Mike Gonzales, Juan Sanchez, Herbert Lara, Reggie Williams, and Anderson Hidalgo who had just a heck of a time with the pen. That new click technology really baffles some of the boys. Ian finally got him through the sharpie experience. "Do they not have click pens in South America?" I ask Ian. It's not like he's the first to have problems. And yes, I've actually seen some Americans at the FSL level puzzled on how to get the "cap" off the click sharpies.

If you haven't done so yet, please check out the new Photo center on Shutterfly. While I am still less than thrilled with the new power uploader, the new photo center is just rockin'!

GCL Twins rally past Orioles on rainy Saturday

Reggie Williams

GCL Orioles 3 at GCL Twins 5

W: K. Nanney (3-0, 0.82); L: M. Moore (2-1, 0.00); SV: K. Mota (10)
HR: None.

Xavier Avery Despite a light rain and threatening thunderstorms in the area, and a brief delay in the game, the GCL Twins managed to rally back in the 8th inning to pick up a win over the GCL Orioles, 5-3 at the Lee County Sportsplex Saturday.

The rain limited the already small crowd - there were only 3 people in the stands when the first pitch was thrown. Martire Gracia got off to a sloppy start and battled with his control through the first four innings.

Garcia walked Xavier Avery to start off the contest, then missed the throw to Henry Sanchez at first on a pick off attempt, sending Avery to 2nd. Jerome Hoes singled out to center, scoring Avery, as Aaron Hicks was not about to go running full out on wet slippery grass. Garcia would get Luis Ramierez on out strikes, but then unleashed a wild pitch that sent Hoes to 2nd. Omar Casamayor would go down on strikes as well, but Garabez Rosa singled out to center again, bringing in Hoes.

Chris Ray made a rehab start for the GCL Pirates, and Danny Ortiz and Andres Diaz would take line drive singles off the major leaguer with two outs on the board. Tyler Ladendorf would go down on strikes however, sending the Orioles up to bat again.

A pair of walks and a single to Larry Rivera loaded the bags up in the second inning, but Garcia was able to take Ramirez out on strikes to send the Orioles back to the dugout without crossing the plate.

Hyun-wook Choi singled and would get to 3rd on Reggie Williams fly ball single one out later, but Hicks flew out to end the inning.

The Twins finally get a man crossed the plate in the bottom of the 3rd. Anderson Hidalgo singled. Following a ground out to Danny Ortiz that advanced the runner, a passed ball by catcher Dashenko Ricardo and a wild pitch by Vito Frabizio pushed Hidalgo over the plate to make it 2-1 Orioles.

Garcia finally got going in the fourth, striking out a pair and getting Edwin Cintron to fly out to end the inning. It would end his stay on the mound as well, as he exited, having allowed 2 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks while striking out 7.

Joe Testa would come in for the top of the 5th and strike out all three batters he faced. The free agent signee has been a great pick up for the Twins his season. Here's hoping he can continue the success that he's had. In any case, that was in it started raining and both teams headed for the shelter of the clubhouse and batting cages. The fans however, do not have too many choices for shelter that do not involve metals, so most fled to their cars.

The shower however was brief and the game resumed. Frabrizio continued on the mound for the O's and Khol Nanney would come in to pitch the next three innings for the Twins.

Jesse Beal replaced Fabrizio in the bottom of the sixth, but the Twins fared no better against him. Marcus Moore would handle the seventh, and would return to the mound for the eighth.

Moore would get Diaz and Ladendorf out on strikes, but issued a walk to Henry Sanchez. Wook reached on a force attempt, and Herbert Lara would come in to replace the lumbering Sanchez. Likewise, the speedy Jon Goncalves would join the game, replacing Wook. A wild pitch by Moore moved he pair, leaving room for catcher Jae-Hyung Jang to talk a walk. All that speed paid off when Reggie Williams doubled bringing in two. With two men left on base, the Orioles would call in Brian Anderson to keep the game close, but Hicks singled to plate the remaining runners, making it 5-2 Twins.

Kelvin Mota would be asked to close out the game but with one out on the board, he'd walk Ricardo. Justin Martin singled to move the O's catcher to 2nd. Larry Rivera would go down on strikes and the O's would put Grolmann Gonzalez in a pinch hitter. Gonzalez got the job done, singling out to center to score Ricardo, but Avery flew out to end the contest giving the Twins the win.

Reggie Williams finished off the game 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, a run and 2 RBIs. Anderson Hidalgo was 3-for-5 with a double and a run. Andres Diaz in the designed hitter role was 2-for-4. Wook and Danny Ortiz (1-for-4) and Hicks (1-for-5) each had singles, Hicks with a RBI as well.

Aaron Hicks Henry Sanchez finished of 0-for-2 with a pair of walks and 1 strike out.

The Twins are not out of playoff contention yet. Unbeknown to me, the GCL has instituted a wild card slot for 2008 so there will be no more buy for the top ranked team. Instead they will face the wild card team in a one game playoff round. The Pirates are leading the GCL South by only half a game and the Twins 26-16, .619 record puts them solidly in the running for the wild card spot.

Sunday, the Twins travel to Sarasota to take on the Reds, they return home on Monday to face the Red Sox. Both games are scheduled for noon.

DSL Twins 1 at DSL Orioles 4

W: E. Ramirez (3-2, 2.63); L: L. Vargas (1-3, 3.00); SV: E. Nunez (10)
HR: None.

It was a different story for the Dominican Summer League Twins, who were also playing the Orioles. The O's took an early lead and hung on to win 4-1.

Yancarlo Franco doubled in the top of the six. A wild pitch by Eiri Ramirez moved him to 3rd and Danny Santana would sacrifice him in.

Jairo Perez finished up 2-for-4 at the plate. Wilfy Gil was 1-for-3 with a walk while Yorby Martinez, Jairo Rodriguez and Franco were all 1-for-4. Rodriguez and Franco each had doubles.

Lesmir Vargas suffered his first loss fo the season, giving up 2 unearned runs on five hits while striking out 2 in five innings worth of work. Renzol Reverol worked the next two innings before giving way to Raynard Doran, who gave up 2 runs, earned, on three hits in 1.1 innings while fanning 2.

The DSL Twins rest on Sunday. The face the DSL White Sox on Monday for a 10:30 AM Dominican time game.

The Twins trail the DSL White Sox1 by 2.5 games with 2 weeks (12 games) left in the season.

* Hicks has allegedly signed an autograph deal and is no longer "allowed" to sign autographs for fans. I've not had the opportunity to test this out, but I'm sure it will work wonders in alienating his fan base once he gets into a league where they have fans.

* Sanchez seemed to think he wasn't going to play as "it's muddy and they don't want to me to reinjure my knee." He played. Sort of.

* A reminder to the boys - if you have not picked up your pictures yet, you need to do so. I'm tired of hunting you all down. Just because you are anti-social (Mr. Ortiz) does not mean I don't have pictures for you.

Twins fall hard to Red Sox

GCL Twins

GCL Red Sox 9 at GCL Twins 2

W: A. Batista (1-0, 0.00); L: M. Munoz (0-1, 15.00)
HR: None.

It would be Aaron Hicks 3rd professional at bat, as he went 0-for-1 yesterday with a walk. It was his first at bat against the Red Sox. Hicks lay down a beautiful bunt along the third base line and used blistering speed to make it on base.

It was the first quietly impressive thing of a quietly impressive performance for the Twins new first round draft pick. I only wish it had been under happier circumstances.

The GCL Twins were mired down in the land of remedial pitching through most of the contest. Miguel Munoz took the start, and the Venezuelan righty was not very impressive in his first professional outing.

Wilfred Pichardo singled out to left, then stole 2nd. Bryan Peterson then singled to score Pichardo for the first of los Calcetines Rojos many, many, many runs. After getting Michael Almanzar to line out, Thomas De Benedetto ground into a force out. Tyler Vockey then doubled to score De Benedetto. Chih-Hsiang Huang ground out to end the inning.

GCL Twins outfielder Wang-Wei Lin is has been sidelined following Tommy Johns surgery, but the showed up at the game today to watch his twin brother pitch for the cross town rival Sox. Herbert Lara would take a single off Wang-Yi Lin to lead off. Juan Sanchez would then be hit by a pitch before Hicks lay down the nice ground bunt single. Following a fly out to fourth round pick Danny Ortiz, Tyler Ladendorf singled to score Lara. Reggie Williams ground into a double play to end the inning.

Munoz would get through the second inning, allowing only a double to Chia-Chu Chen. By this point it was clear it was going to be a very long game however, as Munoz labored through each batter, often running his count full before getting a resolution. GCL Twins first baseman Michael Gonzales would take a walk in the bottom of the second with out out, but Anderson Hildago hit into a double play to end the inning.

Peterson would lead off the top of the 3rd with a triple. Almanzar singled to bring in Peterson and Di Benedetto followed that up with his own single. Tyler Yockey would fly out before Chih-Hsiang Huang singled to score Almanzar. Kennth Roque would be taken out on strikes, before Chen singled to plate De Benedetto. Joantoni Garcia would fly out to Hicks in center to retire the side.

Hicks agent was at the game to get his client's first pro-hit on video. I did not video this time out - sorry - however I did take something like 75 shots at the game, which will be up soon - like maybe Monday afternoon.

Lin would work 3 innings for los Calcetines Rojos, allowing 1 run on 3 hits and a walk. Munoz was also finished after the third inning, allowing 5 runs on 9 hits while fanning 1. Ivan Arteaga is going to have his hands full getting his pitching staff into shape.

Ian Michael Mopas would work the next two innings. A fielding error by Reggie Williams allowed Pichardo to reach. Peterson would strike out swinging, but Pichardo would steal second, then third base. Almanzar's single to center plated Pichardo. Di Benedetto reached on a force attempt when Williams missed the ball. Yockey would be taking out swinging bfore Huang singled to score Almanzar.

Anatanaer Batista replace Lin, and would get Ladendorf to ground out and Williams and Rohlfing to strike out, but the 3rd K pitch went wild, allowing Rohlfing to reach first. No worries, mate. Gonzales, the Twins 9th rounder from Diablo Valley Collage went down on strikes. Gonzalez is a real big kid, BTW, and has the potential to turn into a great slugger. As with most of these position prospects, the trick will be if they can connect with the bat.

Chen singled off Mopas in the top of the fifth as did Garcia. Pichardo hit into a gound out that plated Chen before Peterson ground into a double play.

Jean "sabretooth" Mijares replaced Mopas in the sixth. "Sabretooth" is Liam's nickname for the kid. Aside from the last name and the fact that they are both lefties, there are few similarities between Jose Mijares and Jean Mijares. One of the differences is that Jose throws hard while Jean...let's just say he's more of a finesse player. He was reasonably effective through in the top of the six, with only Di Benedetto reaching on a throwing error by Ladendorf.

He did not fair quite as well in the top of the 7th, giving up a walk to Huang. Following a line out to Roque, Chen then singled. Garcia was taken down on strikes, but a wild pitch by Mijares moved the pair. Pichardo would take a walk, and Peterson would get hit by a pitch to force in a run beofre Micheal Almanzar got called out on strikes. It proved to be a very long inning, much longer than it looks in the write up, and part of a very long game. Time isn't part of the offical score, but I would say we went for 3 hours.

Following a ground out to Rohlfing, Andres Diaz, who had replace Gonzalez at first, cracked a double. Hidalgo then singled to drive in Diaz. He would try to stretch it for a double, but was take down at 2nd base.

Nick Lobonov came in for the top of the 8th, and allowed a walk to Di Benedetto to start out. A little bit of coaxing however to him to get the next three batters to fly out. Field Manager Jake Mauer also put the GCL Twins three sound Korean prospects into the game in that inning. Juan Sanchez drew a walk, but Hicks would be taken down on strikes. Hyun-wook Choi flew out to center. Ladendorft walked, but Hysong-rok Choi ground into a force out to end the inning.

Lobonov would walk Chen and Garcia in the top of the ninth, but got Pichardo to hit into a double play, and Peterson to strike out swinging.

At one point in the game, the Twins had been trailing 4-1 with a lot of baseball left to play. This was no longer the case, as the Twins had only the bottom of the ninth left to play, and needed quite a few runs to tie it. There were no late inning heroics however, as los Calcetines Rojos took them three up-three down to end the game.

I had read, perhaps on BYTO, that Hicks' batting was the weakest of his tools. A THT article stated that Hicks needed to work on his pitch recognition. I had asked Milt about this, figuring that as batting coach, he'd know what Hicks biggest weakness was, and he scoffed at the idea. "If that were the case they wouldn't have drafted him to play outfield. He can play 8 at center and then close the game." Hicks agent reports that Hicks is just happy to be focusing on being a position player at the current time. Right now, I'd say he looks pretty promising as a position player.

The GCL Twins take Monday off. They will visit the GCL Pirates on Tuesday, with a noon game set to happen at Pirate City in Bradenton, Fl. They return home for a pair at the Lee County Sports Complex on Wednesday and Thursday.

TWINs open 2008 season with a WIN

GCL Twins

GCL Pirates 2 at GCL Twins 3

W: S. Blevins (1-0, 0.00); L: J. Charry (0-1, 5.40)
HR: None.

There was lots of rain Thursday morning and their was lots of kitty litter tossed on the diamond to get it going. You know those big industrial sized bags of the stuff? The ones my cat dreams about late at night?

But the Miracle field crew is composed of a bunch of magicians and despite what looked like it was going to be unplayable field conditions, the game got underway and right on time.

Martire Garcia took the start for the GCL Twins, who saw the Pirates get on the board first. On a full count, Anderson Chourio hit a fly ball out to right to open the proceedings. Following a strike out to Edwin Roman, Chourio would steal 2nd. Edward Garcia singled to move Chourio to 3rd. Pirates 35th round draft pick Kyle Morgan would be taken out on strikes before Chourio would steal home.

The Twins tied up the game in the bottom of the third. Anderson Hidalgo would reach on a throwing error by the Pirates Carlos Silva. Lead off man Herbert Lara would ground into a force out that took Hidalgo out at 2nd. Following a ground out to Juan Sanchez, fourth round draftee Danny Ortiz would triple to drive in Lara.

The bottom of the 4th would see Tim Atherton reach on a fielding error by Chourio with 2 outs on the board. Reggie Williams then tripled out to right to plate him.

The Pirates would out hit the Twins 12-5 with Garcia allowing the one run on half that total - six hits - while fanning four over 4 innings.

Aussie Elliott Biddle would make his North American professional debut for the Twins in the fifth. The righty allowed a single to Chourio, but got Garcia and Morgan to ground out to retire the side.

He did not fare so well in the top of the sixth however, with Mendez opening with a double. Craig Parry would fly out before Andury Acevedo bunted Mendez to 3rd. Alex Vargas singled out to left to plate Mendez before Biddle could get Silva to fly out and Chourio to ground into a force out to send the Pirates back to the dugout.

Mauro Schiavoni would take over for the seventh inning on the mound and pitched quite well. In the eighth, Acevedo's ground ball single would slam into him, bowling him over on the mound. After a brief break during which he was checked, he'd be forced to leave the game with bruised right hand. Poor little Schia-pet! Steve Blevins, who had been warming up in the bullpen, would take over a little earlier than planned. He would allow a double to Vargas and and hit Silva with a pitch, but get both Chourio and Roman out on strikes to end the threat.

There was another break during the inning when a ball fouled back off the end of a Pirates bat and into the Miracle dugout, slamming into Javier Brown's face. The rookie infielder would be helped out to the dugout, according to later reports, he has a nice bloodmouse on the side of his face, but nothing is broken. He will miss several games, but is otherwise okay.

Pirate Jorge Cherry would allow a walk to Twins 2nd rounder Tyler Ladendorf in the bottom of the stanza. Blevins returned to the mound for the top of the 9th, going 3 up and 3 down.

Tim Atherton would ground out to start the bottom of the 9th, but Reggie Williams doubled. Twins field manager Jake Mauer would put Jakub Hajtmar in as a pinch runner for Williams. Hidalego would line out to right, which brought us back to the top of the order.

The Twins have had a lot of success with Latin American lead off men in the past with Jeanfred Brito in 2007 and Esterlin De Los Santos in 2006. This year's lead off man is no different. Lara hit a nice little fly ball over the head of Pirates' 1st baseman Alex Vargas to drive in Hajtmar, winning the opening game of the 2008 GCL Twins season!

Williams was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple and a run scored. Lara was 1-for-3 with a pair of walks, a run and a run scored. Ortiz would go 1-for-4 at the plate with a triple and a run batted in, while Aussie outfielder Atherton was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.

The Twins play their next two on the road in Sarasota, facing the Orioles on Friday at Noon and the Reds on Saturday at 10:00 AM. They return home on Sunday for a noon contest against the GCL Red Sox.

As a matter of expediency, I have posted the 2008 roster as a .jpg and will put it into html as soon as I get a chance. There are also well over 100 pictures coming of the game, so hang tight.

The Twins got new unis - they were so new they still had the little holographic stickers on them. They look sharp!
