As expected, the Minnesota Twins announced that they have recalled lefthanded pitcher Francisco Liriano and selected the contract of first baseman/designated hitter Randy Ruiz from Triple-A Rochester.

Liriano was 10-2, 3.28 (118.0 ip, 43 er), allowing 102 hits with 31 walks and 113 strikeouts and an opponents' batting-average-against of .231 (102-for-441) in 19 starts for the Red Wings this season. In his last 11 starts with Rochester, he was 10-0, 2.67 (70.2 ip, 21 er) with 13 walks and 80 strikeouts.

Ruiz batted .320 (133-for-416) with 33 doubles, three triples, 17 home runs and 68 RBIs in 111 games with the Red Wings this season. He led the International League in hits, was tied for the league lead in batting, and was second in doubles and extra-base hits (53). Ruiz led the club in games, hits, doubles, home runs and RBIs, and was second in at-bats. He will wear uniform number 56.

To make room for Liriano and Ruiz on the 25-man roster, the Twins have designated righthanded pitcher Livan Hernandez and outfielder Craig Monroe for release or assignment.

Newcomer Thomas Shearn, a free agent signee, too the start in Friday's night contest instead of Liriano, allowing 1 run on 3 hits and pair of walks while striking ou 5 over five innings. The Wings fell late to the Pawtucket Red Sox 8-7.

Wings, Hens split first half of series

Monday: Toledo 6 at Rochester 4

The Toledo Mud Hens took game one of their 4-game series against the Rochester Red Wings, 6-4, at Frontier Field. Brett Clevlan homered twice for the Mud Hens.

The Mud Hens wasted no time going after Wings starter Julio DePaula. Clevlan would hit his 18th yarder of the year over the left field fence in the top of the first to put the Hens on the board.

The top of the second saw Kody Kirland and Dane Sardinha hitting back-to-back singles. A double by Fredy Guzman brought in Kirkland and a sac-fly by Timo Perez scored Sardinha. Guzman would then steal 2nd, but Clevlen went yard again for number 19, making it 5-0 Hens

Garrett Jones would homer for the Wings in the bottom of the stanza to give them their first run of the night.

Casey Daigle would replace DePaula for the top of the 3rd. Despite giving up a single to Clete Thomas and a walk to Mike Holliman, he'd get out of the inning without allowing further damage.

The Wings made a stab at catching up in the bottom half of the stanza with Alejandro Machado doubling to lead off. Jeff Christy reached on a Holliman throwing error and Jason Pridie reached on a fielders choice when Jeff Larish threw the ball to Dane Sardinha in an attempt to get Machado out at the plate. Sardinha would miss the ball however, and Machado scored. Howie Clark and Darnell McDonald both ground into force outs that scored Jeff Christy, to make it 5-3 Hens.

Timo Perez would homer in the top of the 4th to give the Hens their sixth run.

Eddie Bonine would work 7.1 innings, allowing 4 runs - 2 earned - on five hits while striking out 5. Jason Pridie would homer off him in the bottom of the 8th, which also ended his tenure on the mound.

Pridie was 2-for-4 with a run and a RBI. Jones as 1-for-4 with a run and a RBI. Randy Ruiz and Matt Macri both hit singles, while Machado was good for a double and a run.

Sunday night’s win was the 10th time this season the Red Wings have won a game in their final at-bat. (10-8 record). Since Rochester changed affiliations to the Minnesota Twins in 2003, the Red Wings have a 73-49 record in games decided in last at-bats.

LHP Brian Duensing is scheduled to make one more start for the Red Wings (July 25 in Scranton) before leaving the team on July 28th. Duensing will join the USA Olympic Team in preparation for next month's Summer Games in Beijing.

The Red Wings were held to six hits, after racking up 10 or more hits in each of their last three games.

DePaula is headed back to the Bullpen as is Danny Graves. Phil Humber returns to the rotation to take over Graves role, while Casey Daigle will take over for De Paula.

Tuesday: Toledo 0 at Rochester 13

Francisco Liriano worked seven innings scattering a pair of hits and a pair of walks while fanning 10 in route to a blanking of the visiting Toledo Mud Hens by the Rochester Red Wings. Carmen Cali worked the final two innings, allowing a pair of hits and a pair of walks, but no runs.

Jason Pridie tripled to lead off the bottom of the first. Howie Clark hit his third home run of the season to bring in two.

In the bottom of the 3rd, Clark reached on a fielding error and following a fly out by Darnell McDonald, Garrett Jones reached on a force attempt. Hens starter Virgil Vasquez would miss-field a ball, allowing Ruiz to reach and Clark to score. Matt Macri then double to bring in Jones. After a break for a coaching visit on the mound, Trevor Plouffe sacrificed in Ruiz. Alejandro Machado doubled to plate Macri. Ryan Jorgenson followed that up with a walk, but Jason Pridie would line out to end the inning.

Clark doubled in the bottom of the 4th and McDonald singled him in. A throwing error by Jeff Larish put McDonald at 2nd. He'd move to 3rd on a fly out by Jones, and come home on Ruiz's sac-fly. Macri would double before Jeremy Johnson came in to replace Vasquez. Plouffe would double off the new hurler to plate Macri before Macado went down on strikes.

Liriano struck out the first three batters he faced and would not allow a hit until Erick Almonte doubled in the 3rd. He'd walk Clevlen in the fourth, but strike out two in the fifth, with Clete Thomas grounding out.

Pridie doubled in the bottom of the 5th and made his way to 3rd on a Clark single, but McDonald and Jones went down on strikes to strand him.

Plouffe doubled in the second half of the sixth inning and came home on a throwing error by Mike Hessman that also allowed Machado to reach.

Liriano would allow a walk to Clevlan and a single to Larish in the top of the 7th, but got Hessman to fly out and Thomas to strike out to finish of his stint on the mound.

Brian Rogers took over the pitching chores for the Hens in the bottom of the 8th. Jones would take a walk off him to start things off and move to second on Randy Ruiz ground out. Macri then walked and Plouffe singled to score Jones. After Machado ground out, Ryan Jorgensen doubled to drive in Macri and Plouffe to finish off the Wings scoring.

Clark was 3-for-5 with 3 runs and a pair of RBIs. Plouffe was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and 3 RBIs, and Macri was 2-for-4 with a walk, 3 runs and one run scored. Jorgensen was also 2-for-4 a the plate with a walk, a double and a pair of RBIs.

McDonald was 2-for-5 with a run, while Pride went 2-for-6 with a double and a triple, and one run. Ruiz was 1-for-3 with a run and a RBI, while Machado was 1-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Jones was the only Wing without a hit, but he had one walk and a pair of runs to make up for it.

In his last 10 starts Liriano is 9-0; Liriano at Frontier Field is now 6-2 and has allowed just five earned runs in his last 47.2 innings pitched at Frontier.

The Red Wings have not yet had a roster transaction in the month of July. The Red Wings' last transaction was June 30 when outfielder Denard Span was promoted to Minnesota and infielder Howie Clark was activated from the disabled list. The last time Rochester went an entire month without promoting a single player from their roster to the Major Leagues was April 1991. Rochester had eight transactions that month but none of them were Major League promotions (4 DL, 2 players released, 1 free agent signing and one Double-A promotion).

Outfielder Garrett Jones hit his 12th home run of the season Monday night, his 70th as a Red Wing. Jones is the first Rochester player to hit 70 home runs during his Red Wings career since Terry Crowley hit 87 home runs from (1968, 69, 71, 76-77). Jones’ 70 home runs put him 10th all-time on the Red Wings home run list and 5 away from tying Allie Clark for 9th all-time (75 home runs).

The Wings will receive a pitcher from New Britain to replace Olympic bound Brian Duensing. The top candidates are reported to be Ryan Mullins (7-6, 3.99 earned-run average) and Anthony Swarzak (3-7, 5.74).

New Britain clubs Fisher Cats, 15 - 3

The New Britain Rock Cats must have rested well during the All-Star break, as they came back to work ready to go, destroying the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 15-3 at Merchantsauto.com Stadium.

New Hampshire's Brett Cecil worked 3 innings, with Dustin Martin taking a double off of him in the top of the 3rd. A wild pitch moved Martin so 3rd, and David Winfree singled to plated him. After Erik Lis went down on strikes, Winfree moved to 3nd on a passed ball, and Brock Peterson would take a walk. Toby Gardenhire would go down on strikes however to give the Fisher Cats a chance.

With two outs on the board, David Smith doubled off Jay Rainville. Brian Jeroloman then went deep, sending a home run over the right field wall to make it 2-1 Fisher Cats.

Keny Rodrgiuez replaced Cecil in the top of the fourth and following a pop out to Drew Butera, Felix Molina and Dustin Martin hit back-to-back singles. A wild pitch by Rodrigues advanced the pair. Danny Valencia ground into a force out that took a Molina out at home, but a throwing error by J.P. Arencibia allowed Hughes to score and advanced the runners. Winfree would walk to load the bags before Lis flew out to left.

For the fifth inning, Jean Machi would take over for the Fisher Cats, and allowed a lead off walk to Peterson. Gardenhire singled and Butera advanced the pair on a sac bunt. Molina double to drive the two runners in. Hughes flew out to left before Martin singled a ground ball to right that plated Molina, for a 5-2 Rock Cats advantage.

Zach Ward took over for Rainville in the sixth, and walked Jeroloman. Butler singled to move the slugger to 3rd and Andrew Pinchney ground into a double play that saw him home, for the Fisher Cats 3rd run.

Jared Gothreaux replaced Machi in the sixth inning and allowed a walk to Molina in the seventh. Hughes walked and Martin singled to load up the bags. Danny Valencia double to clean them off and Winfree's single moved the Florida native over to 3rd. Lis would fly into a double play that took out out Winfree, but allowed Valencia to score, making it 9-3 Rock Cats.

Gardenhire took a walk off Orlando Roman in the top of the 7th, moved to 2nd on Butera's single to third when Hughes was plunked by a pitch. Martin was then walked by Orlando to force in a run.

The Fisher Cats looked to Seth Overbey to get them out of this game, but Overbey walked Winfree and Lis. Peterson singled in Winfree and Gardenhire followed that up with his own single to load the bags. Butera then lifted a ball over the left field wall for a grad slam home run. Julio Pinto was finally called in to get three outs, while Frank Mata was tagged to finish things up for the Rock Cats.

Martin was 4-for-4 with 3 walks, a pair of run and a pair of runs scored. Gardenhire was 3-for-5 with a pair of walks and 3 runs, While Butera and Molina were each 3-for-5 Butera with a run and 4 RBIs and Molina with a walk, a pair of runs and a pair of RBIs. Winfree went 2-for-3 with 3 walks, a run and a run scored.

Game two of the series is Friday at 7:05 PM. Ricky Romero (5-5, 5.61) gets the nod for the Fishers on the mound vs. Anthony Swarzak (3-7, 5.99) for the Rock Cats.

Norfolk 4 at Rochester 7

Francisco Liriano is reportedly unhappy to still find himself in the minors after pitching quite well recently. Liriano picked up the win, allowing only 1 run on 7 hits and striking out 8 over 8 innings. Ricky Barrett would be tagged for three on two runs and a walk in .2 innings as the Rochester Red Wings rose above the Tide, 7-4.

Trevor Plouffe walked and Darnell McDonald doubled out to right. Garrett Jones would sacrifice in Plouffe, and Randy Ruiz extended his hit streak by singling in McDonald. To give the Red Wings an early lead.

Jones homered to lead off the bottom of the 4th and following a Ruiz ground out, Clark singled then stoled second base. Matt Macri took a walk before Sergio Santos doubled to plated Clark and Macri. After Ryan Jorgenson ground out, Jason Pridie doubled to bring in Santos.

The Wings finished off their scoring in the bottom of the 8th with Ruiz doubling off Jim Miller, then coming home on a Howie Clark single.

Ruiz was 2-for-4 with a run and a run scored, while Clark was 2-for-3 with a walk, a run and a RBI.

The series continues Friday at 6:05 PM with post game fireworks at Frontier Field. Rochester's Danny Graves (3-3, 5.18 ERA) will take on the Tides LHP Randy Keisler (0-1, 4.18).

With Ruiz' hitting streak at 23 games, we note that Michael Jones of the Greenville Drive (Class A South Atlantic League, Boston affiliate) had a 28-game streak, tops in the minors so far this season. (Ah, our old GCL buddy Michael Jones!)

The Red Wings' 45-54 record at the All-Star break is the first losing record Rochester has had at the All-Star break since 2003.

Rock Cats "Rain" over Harrisburg

Harrisburg's Bill Rhinehart homered in the bottom of the sixth inning, but was the only run the Senators would get as the New Britain Rocks Cats downed the Harrisburg Senators 4-1.

Jay Rainville worked six innings scattering 4 hits and a pair of walks whil striking out 4 to pick up his sixth win the of season. The Cats offense came out to support him as well, finding 4 runs on 10 hits.

Danny Valencia singled in the top of the second inning, then came home on a Matt Moses double. A throwing error by the Sens' William Bergolla moved him to 3rd. David Winfree triple to drive in Moses and, following a ground out to Toby Gardenhire, Rodolfo Palacios singled to plate Winfree, giving the Cats a 3 runs lead.

They'd hang on to it until Rhinehart's solo shot in the sixth, made it 3-1.

New Britain added an extra run in the ninth when Steve Schmoll walked Winfree, then hit Gardenhire with a pitch. After Palacios was retired on strikes, Luke Hughes singled to bring in Winfree.

Ben Julianel replaced Rob Delaney for the bottom of the 9th and allowed a single and a walk, but former Miracle Garrett Guzman would be taken down at 2nd by Palacios, and Julianel would use a pair of fly outs to end the contest.

Winfree was 1-for-2 on the evening with a pair of walks, a pair of runs, and a RBI. Moses finished up 2-for-4 with a run and a run scored; Hughes and Brock Peterson were both 2-for-5, Hughes with a RBI as well. Gardenhire would be the one hit wonder of the night, while Palacios had a single and a RBI, and Valencia had a single and a run.

The Cats return home on Friday to face the Portland Sea Dogs for a four-game series.

Rochester 14 at Durham 1

Randy Ruiz advanced his hitting streak to 19 games with a with a 2-run home run in the first inning to help lead the Rochester Red Wings on a 14-run rampage over the Durham Bulls.

Jason Pridie, Darnell McDonald and Sergio Santos were all 2-for-5 at the plate with a pair of runs each, McDonald and Santos each with 4 RBIs as well. Garrett Jones, Ruiz and Matt Macri were all 2-for-5 with a run, Macri with 1 run scored and Ruiz with 3.

Howie Clark was 4-for-4 in the contest with 4 runs and a double. Tommy Watkins laced a triple out to right in the top of the 8th, coming home on a McDonald ground out, while Ryan Jorgenson kept the hits coming with a single, a walk, and run scored.

Francisco Liriano held the Bulls to 3 hits and a walk over 7 innings while striking out 8. Carmen Cali gave up the lone Bulls run in the bottom of the 8th by allowing a double to Fernando Perez and a triple to Jon Weber.

Ruiz’s 19-game hitting streak is tied for the 2nd longest in Triple-A this season (Omir Santos of Norfolk had a 21-game hitting streak).

The Wings and Bulls continue their series at 7:05 p.m. tonight. Righthander Julio DePaula (1-3, 5.86 ERA) is expected to start against Durham's Mitch Talbot (7-7, 4.85).

Infielder Trevor Plouffe is day-to-day after fouling a ball off his foot in Charlotte.

Minnesota Twins shortstop Adam Everett will begin a rehab stint with the Class A Ft. Myers Miracle on Saturday. The infielder is scheduled to play in three games during the Miracle’s upcoming home stand.

Liriano name IL Pitcher of the Week

The International League announced today that Rochester pitcher Francisco Liriano has been named the League's Pitcher-of-the-Week for the period from June 30-July 6.

Liriano joins outfielders Darnell McDonald (April 28-May 4) and Denard Span (May 12-18) as the third Red Wing to be so honored this season.

In 2005, 21-year-old sensation Francisco Liriano won IL Pitcher of the Week honors twice in a span of three weeks (July 18-24, August 1-7) on his way to the League's Rookie of the Year Award. Three years later, as he works his way back to the Major Leagues following "Tommy John" surgery, Liriano has done it again. Looking closer to his old form, Liriano was brilliant in a pair of victories this week over division rivals Lehigh Valley and Buffalo. The 6'2" southpaw surrendered just seven hits and two walks in 13.0 total innings while striking out 16. Liriano posted his first two scoreless outings of the season, and his nine-strikeout effort against the Iron Pigs Monday was also a season-high. He has now won his last six decisions for the Red Wings (a team-high) all coming in his last seven starts.

24-year-old Francisco Liriano is in his 5th season with the Twins after being acquired in a trade with San Francisco prior to the 2004 season. In his first full big league campaign in 2006, he was one of baseball's most dominant pitchers, posting a 12-3 record with a 2.16 ERA before pain in his left elbow forced him onto the disabled list. He did not pitch in 2007 while recovering from surgery. Liriano is a native of San Cristobal, Dominican Republic.

A tale of two shut outs (Part II)

The sad truth is, Jay Rainville is used to pitching in front of a team that gives him no offensive support. He dealt with this all of last season with the Fort Myers Miracle. And he'll tell you himself that the solution is that he needs to pitch better.

Rainville gave up 3 runs on 4 hits and a pair of walks over five innings worth of work. Jay Miller added a pair more on 3 hits and 2 walks over 3 innings while striking out 2.

And the New Britain Rock Cats managed just three hits against Nate Bump and the Connecticut Defenders.

Danny Valencia was 1-for-4 with a double; Drew Butera was 1-for-2 with a walk, and Matt Moses was the one hit wonder of the night, with a single.

Antoan Richardson knocked a homer run over the right field line in the top of the first inning, given Rainville a warm welcome back to Double A.

In the bottom of the second, Adam Witter would go yard over the right field fence. After Carlos Sosa flew out, Simon Klink would get hit by a pitch. Kyle Haines ground into a force out, but Olmo Rosario and Ben Copeland hit back-to-back singles that served to plate Haines.

Rainville settled down after that, giving up only a pair of walks over the next three innings.

Miller would take over in the top of the sixth and allow a second home run to Witter, this one going over the center field wall. He'd then walk Sosa before getting Klink out on strikes. Haines doubled in Sosa, to make it 5-0 Defenders.

The inner-state rivals continue their series Sunday July 6th at New Britain Stadium with a 1:35 contest. Anthony Swarzak (3-6, 5.96) gets the start for New Britain against Connecticut's Garrett Broshuis (7-6, 3.49).

In Frontier Field it was a different story as Rochester Red Wing starter Francisco Liriano worked through six innings, scattering 3 hits and a walk while striking out 7 to keep the Buffalo Bison's sedated.

The Wings also managed a bit more offense than their AA counterparts, coming up with a pair of runs on 8 hits. The first came in the bottom of the 3rd, then Trevor Plouffe doubled, then came home on Darnell McDonald's single.

The insurance run came in the bottom of the 5th, when Ryan Jorgensen went yard over the left field line. It was the catcher's sixth home run of the season.

Jorgenson finished up 2-for-3 with a run and a run scored and has stepped up to the plate for the Wings in the absence of former Miracle Jose Morales, who will be having season ending ankle surgery. Howie Clark was 2-for-4 for the Wings, but did not factor into the scoring.

Tommy Watkins had a single and a walk in the contest, while Randy Ruiz picked up a double to go along with the hits by Plouffe and McDonald to round out the batting. The double extended Ruiz hitting streak to 14 games.

Rochester plays in Charlotte on Sunday, July 6, with a 5:15 PM start.

R-Phils run over Rock Cats

New Britain 8 at Reading 13

The New Britain Rock Cats got off to a great start, recording 4 runs in each of the first 2 innings - then they sort of stopped. Meanwhile the Reading Phillies took advantage of an already suspect bullpen to rally past and win, 13-8.

Kip Bouknight did not fair all that well for Reading although he did get Dustin Martin to ground out to start the game. He end gave up a single to Brian Dinkelman before getting Erik Lis to ground out. Brock Peterson and Matt Moses took back-to-back singles which plated Dink before David Winfree would double the pair in. Felix Molina's single to center drove in Winfree for the first Rock Cats' four. Molina would be caught stealing 2nd for the final out.

Southpaw Ryan Mullins would give up back-to-back singles to start the bottom of the inning, and a throwing error by Toby Gardenhire put Javon Moran on 3rd. Brad Harman would ground into a double play that scored Moran and following a Lou Marson single, Jeremy Slayden would fly out to end the inning.

Gardenhire, Drew Butera and Martin all singled off Bouknight to start the top of the 2nd. Dinkelman's grounder to center would plate Gardenhire, then Erik Lis would triple to clear off the bags. At this time, Travis Minix came in for the R-Phils and the Cats' fun evaporated as he quickly got Peterson and Winfree out on strikes, and Moses to pop out in foul territory.

Joey Hammond drew a walk from Mullins to start the bottom half the stanza. Neil Sellers then singled, but Mike Eylward and Jake Blalock both flew out. Moran reached on a Molina fielding error that loaded the bags, and Mike Spidale would walk to load the bags. Harmon would ground out to end the inning, but not the R-Phil scoring.

Marson walked in the bottom of the 3rd, but Slayden ground into a force out. Hammond would double in Slayden. Following a ground out to Seller, Eylward put his 3rd yard ball of the year over the left field fence to score two. Blalock would single and Moran walk before Spidale flew out to end the inning.

The bottom of the fourth saw Harmon single and one out later, come home when Slayden went yard, over the left field fence, for his 10th of the season.

Yohan Pino would work the fifth without giving up a run, but in the sixth saw Marson walk and, one out later, Hammond double him in, tying up the game.

Armando Gabino replaced Pino for the bottom of the 8th and lead off with a walk to Eylward. Blacklock singled, but Moran bunt into a force out that took Eylward out at 3rd. Spidale singled to load the bags while Harman's follow up single scored Blalock and Moran. A wild pitch brought in Spidale and following a fly out to Marson that put Harmon on 3rd, a single to Slayden brought in the Aussie to make it 12-8, Phillies.

Seller's 11th home run of the year gave the R-Phils 13 to finish off the contest, and also the Phillies largest come back win in 10-years.

Gardenhire and Butera were both 2-for-4 with a run each. Dinkelman was 2-for-5 with a pair of runs and a RBI. Lis would drive in 3 with his triple, while Winfree brought in 2.

Lehigh Valley 1 at Rochester 2

Francisco Liriano worked 7 stellar innings allowing only 4 runs ad a walk while striking out 9 to blank the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs. Never mind that Lehigh Valley is the worst team in the International League. It was still a good outing for him.

The Rochester Red Wings would put 2 runs on the board in the fourth, then hang on to claim the win from the Iron Pigs.

Darnell McDonald lead off the bottom of the fourth frame with a walk. One out later, Randy Ruiz would double him. Matt Macri put Ruiz on 3rd, and Sergio Santos sacrificed in Ruiz for the Red Wings 2 runs.

Tim Lahey worked a scoreless eighth before giving way to Bobby Korecky. Mike Rouse would single to lead off the ninth, and after Mike Cervenak was called out on strikes. Andy Tracy took a walk. Jon Knott then singled to drive in Rouse, but Korecky would the last to batters out on strikes to pick up his 11 save of the season.

The Wings would win on only three hits, with Ryan Joregenson going 1-for-2 with a double and a walk which did not factor into the scoring.

Liriano's nine strikeouts tied the team high for 2008, with Kevin Mulvey reaching that figure twice.

The two teams rematch Tuesday at Frontier Field, with a 7:05 PM start with Phillip Humber (4-6, 5.19) taking to the mound for the Wings vs. lefty Les Walrond (1-7, 3.86) for the Pigs.

Infielder Howie Clark was activated from the Wings' disabled list on Monday, taking the roster spot of Denard Span, who has been promoted to Minnesota. Clark did not play Monday night. He has been out the past three weeks with a strained oblique.

Timely hits by the Rochester Red Wings and a solid outing by Francisco Liriano lead to a balanced attack and a win over the Louisville Bats.

Liriano would work 7.1 innings, allowing 2 runs, both earned, on five hits while striking out 5.

After Liriano set the first three Bats down in order, Tommy Watkins would get the offense going with a single. Jason Pridie doubled and a Darnell McDonald ground out saw Watkins score. Garrett Jones would also ground out, but it drove in Pridie to give the Wings a pair of runs in the inning.

Watkins would walk in the bottom of the 3rd with one out on the board, but Pride ground into a force out that nabbed the former Miracle at 2nd. Pridie then stoled second base. McDonald would draw a walk before Jones singled in Pridie, making it 3-0 Wings.

This time though the Bats answered back with Norris Hopper getting on the bags with a line drive, then moving to second on a sac-bunt by Andy Green. Jeff Keppinger's line drive moved Hopper to 3rd, and he would be sacrificed in by Kevin Barker.

In the bottom of the 7th, Sergio Santos would double and move to 3rd on a Trevor Plouffe single. Alejandro Machado ground out to score Santos, making it 4-1 Rochester.

Following a ground out to Chris Dickerson in the top of the 8th, Michael Griffin doubled. This saw Liriano removed from the mound and Bobby Korecky came in to relieve him. Hopper singled to move Griffin to 3rd. Green would reach on a fielder's choice that saw Griffin taken out at the plate, but Keppinger's follow up single drove in Hopper for another Bats run.

Pridie doubled in the bottom of the 8th, them moved to 3rd when McDonald ground out. Jones would double in Pridie for the final Wings run.

Pridie would go 3-for-4 at the plate with 3 runs and a pair of doubles, Jones and Santos were both 2-for-4, Jones with a double and 3 RBIs and Santos with a double and a run. Plouffe, newly promoted to the Wings went 1-for-3, earning himself the one hit wonder of the game award, while Machado was 0-for-3 with 1 RBI.

The Red Wings wore light blue tops as part of Sunday's Father's Day Prostate Cancer Awareness event with the Pluta Cancer Center. The tops were signed by each Red Wing and auctioned to raise money for Pluta, with a total of $4,970 raised. Bobby Korecky's #28 brought in $500, tops on the day.

The two teams rematch for game three of a four-game series with the first pitch coming at 7:05 PM at Frontier Field. RHP Julio DePaula (1-2, 6.00 ERA) will take to the mound against Bats RHP Ramon Ramirez (2-1, 6.43).

Randy Ruiz was named the Twins Minor League Player of the Week for June 6-13.

The Red Wings hit the halfway mark of the 2008 season today with a losing record, the ninth time since 1997 Rochester has hit the halfway mark with a record below .500. Rochester currently holds a 31-41 record, with nine less wins than 2007 (39-33 record).



Beloit at Quad Cities - Canceled

In Low A Action, Beloit and Quad Cities was canceled due to rising floodwaters in the Mississippi River. As the two teams do not meet again in the first half of the season, the game will not be made up.

"We commend the City of Davenport for their efforts in helping us stay open and stay safe," said River Bandits owner Dave Heller in a team press release. "We have been so impressed by the incredible dedication of the City to keep the ballpark open through the flood. But the water level has now extended beyond the temporary bridge and it is impossible to get our fans in and out of the ballpark safely. At this point, with the team leaving for the All-Star break tonight, everyone agreed that it is important that the City focus its resources where they are needed most. As much as we want to play for our fans, there are bigger things going on in the Quad Cities now."

The Snappers finish up the first half of the season with a 33-31 record, good for 3rd in the Western Division, 5.5 games behind the Clinton Lumber Kings.

The league now goes on it's All-star break with 7 Snappers headed to the Midwest League showcase which is being played at Dow Diamond in Midland, Michigan, home of the Great Lakes Loons.

The Snappers roster received a bit of an overhaul with Greg Olson (.247, 5 home runs, 27 RBIs and 10 stolen bases), Steve Singleton (.302 average, 37 runs, six home runs and 32 RBIs), Catcher Danny Lehmann (.240 average, 13 runs, 4 doubles and 9 walks) and reliever Matt Williams (2-0, 2.09 ERA, 38.3 innings pitched and 42 strike outs) headed to Fort Myers. In addition, pitchers Danny Berlind and Brad Tippett were send down to Extended Spring Training. Both will likely spend the second half of the season in Elizabethton.

Loek Van Mil, Chris Cates and Jair Fernandez will be going to the Midwest All-star game to replace the outgoing All-star Snappers that are headed to High A.

Beloit is now six players down and will have their roster replenished in the next few days. (Press Release)

A day off did little for the New Britain Rock Cats who got pulverized by the Altoona Curve, 10-2. Errol Simonitsch gave up 7 runs (earned) on 13 hits while striking out 4 over 5 innings. Zach Ward got tagged for 3 more runs on 4 hits and a walk over the next 2 innings.

Simo couldn't wait to get out of the Fort Myers Federal Penitentiary earlier this year; I wonder if he wants back in yet.

New Britain would score in the bottom of the 3rd when Drew Butera was hit by a pitch with two outs. A wild pitch by Derek Hankins moved him to 2nd. Felix Molina would reach on a fielding error by Altoona first baseman Jason Delaney which also allowed Butera to come home. It would tie up the game after Brad Corely homered in the second inning, this sixth of the season.

The fourth would see the Curve putting four runs on the board with Anthony Webster, Jason Bowers and Shelby Ford all doubling, and Jason Delaney and Luis Cruiz getting picking up singles of Simonitsch.

Simo would come out for the sixth inning and give up a double to Cruz and singles to Bowers and Miguel Perez before Zach Ward would come out of the bullpen. Ward would get Shelby Ford to ground into a double play, but Melvin Dorta doubled to bring in Bowers for the second run of the inning.

Ward would walk Delaney and allow singles to Webster and Cruz to load the bases in the top of the 7th. Bowers fly ball single scored Delaney. Perez would get hit by a pitch to force in another run, and Ford's ground out would plate Cruz for the 3rd run.

Trailing by nine, the Cats finally found another run in the bottom of the 9th then Erik Lis hit is 5th home run of the season. Brock Peterson would double and Matt Moses single, but David Winfree and Dustin Martin both popped out to end the inning.

Ryan Mullins (5-4, 3.48) is reported to be the unlucky recipient of a trip to the mound tonight for the Rock Cats, while the Curve counter with former Rock Cat Josh Hill (4-6, 3.94).

Durham 2 at Rochester 14

The Rochester Red Wings provided plenty of support for Francisco Liriano to pick up his second win of the season as they crushed the Durham Bulls, 14-2.

Liriano limited the Bulls to 1 run on six hits and a walk while striking out 7 in six innings worth of work. Caisey Daigle worked 2 innings of relief, allowing 1 hit and fanning 2.

Fernando Perez singled in the top of the 1st, stole 2nd, then came home on Joel Guzman's line drive to right for the only run Liriano would allow.

Ryan Jorgenson, and Tommy Watkins singled, but Jason Pridie would hit into an unassisted double play. Darnell McDonald then walked, a a single to Jones brought in Jorgenson. Brian Buscher followed up by going yard to bring in 3 more, making it 4-1 Wings.

Jorgenson singled in the bottom of the fourth, then came home on a Tommy Watkins double for the fifth Red Wings run.

Buscher would reach on a throwing error in the bottom of the 5th, then come home on Randy Ruiz's eighth home run of the season, which went over the center field fence.

In the end 4 different Wings went yard. Watkins finished up 3-for-5 with a run, a pair of doubles and 3 RBIs. McDonald was 3-for-4 with 3 runs and 2 runs scored. Jorgenson was also 3-for-4 with 3 runs. Jones finished up 2-for-5 with a run and a run scored.

Howie Clark (abdominal strain) did not play and remains unavailable for at least the next few days.

RHP Philip Humber (sore right elbow) will miss his scheduled start Wednesday as a precautionary measure, and reliever Julio DePaula (1-2, 5.94) will make the spot start. The Bulls will send out RHP Jeff Niemann (2-2, 3.65).

The Red Wings and Batavia Muckdogs both landed in the top 25 of all Minor League Baseball clubs for merchandise sales in 2007.

The Twins have signed six players from the 2008 First-Year Player draft: second round pick (60th overall), Tyler Ladendorf, an infielder from Howard College, third round pick Bobby Lannigan, a right handed pitcher from Adelphi University, 10th round pick Evan Bigley, an outfielder from Dallas Baptist University, 13th round pick Michael Harrington, an outfielder from College of Charleston, 21st round pick Steve Blevins, a righthanded pitcher from Marshall University and 25th round pick Alex Curry, a righthander from Cypress College. All six players have reported to the Lee County Sports Complex in Ft. Myers, where the Twins Mini-Camp started Tuesday.

Francisco Liriano held the Buffalo Bisons to only 4 hits and 4 walks over six innings, while his team mates doubled their effort at the plate to get the Dominican lefty his first win of the season.

He gave up three runs to the Bisons, and fanned 7 of the 26 batters he faced.

Buffalo's runs came in the bottom of the first inning when Chris De La Cruz opened the proceedings by taking a walk. Jorge Velandia would be hit by a pitch. Following a fly out to Michael Aubrey and a strike out to Todd Linden, Ryan Mulhern would go yard over the left field wall for a 3-0 Bisons lead.

Liriano's batters came back for him in the top of the 3rd with Tommy Watkins walking and Jason Pridie singling to lead off. Darnell McDonald singled to load the bases and Garrett Jones hit a line drive to right to plate two. Howie Clark would triple in McDonald and Jones to put the Wings ahead. Following a pop out to Randy Ruiz, Jose Morales singled in Clark to make it 5-3 wings.

Jeff Stevens would take over the Bison's mound in the top of the 7th, and with a pair of outs on the board, gave up a walk to Clark. Ruiz then homered out to left to score 2. Morales and Sergio Santos would hit back-to-back doubles to bring in one more run, making it 8-3 Wings.

Ricky Barrett handled the final three innings, picking up his first save of the season, allowing no hits or walks, and fanning 5 during his tenure on the mound.

Pridie, McDonald, Jones and Ruiz were all 2-for-5 in the contest with a run each, Jones and Ruiz also had 2 RBIs each. Morales was 2-for-3 with a walk, a run and a run scored. Clark was 1-for-4 with a walk, a pair of runs and a pair of RBIs.

The teams finish up Friday with a 7:35 PM game. Philip Humber (3-5, 5.53) will get the start for the Wings.

The Twins will reinstate righthanded pitcher Scott Baker from the 15-day disabled list in time to start Thursday's game vs. Baltimore. Baker was originally placed on the disabled list May 7 (retro to May 4) with a right groin strain. To make room for Baker on the 25-man roster, the Twins optioned infielder Matt Macri to Triple-A Rochester after Wednesday's game. Since being recalled on May 23, Macri appeared in four games, batting .429 (3-for-7) with a double and one rbi.

Wings drop pair to Yankees

I was hoping after picking up a sweep against Charlotte that they Rochester Red Wings would have picked up their game as well, but with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees in town, that seems not to be the case.

One would like to believe that the Wings have been seriously hurt by call ups to the bigs, but prior to that, they were not winning the way they should have been.

Friday night they took the early lead when Darnell McDonald homered. McDonald has been a key part of the Wings offense - in some cases the only part of the Wings offense. Brian Buscher would fallow that up with a double, but Garrett Jones could not keep up his end of the bargain, flying out to end the inning.

Randy Ruiz singled and Jose Morales double in the bottom of the 2nd. Serigo Santos would reach on a fielders choice. Yankees 3rd baseman Nick Green would field the ball and throw to home in an attempt to save the run, but catcher Chris Stewart could not get a handle on the ball, and Ruiz added one to the Red Wings total. Chris Basak's sac-bunt moved Morales to 3rd, and he'd come home on a Tommy Watkins ground out to make it 3-0 Red Wings.

In the top of the 3rd Eric Duncan hit his fifth home run of the year to put the Yankees on the board. A Bernie Castro single and a Brett Gardner double lead to another run in the top of the 5th when Alberto Gonzalez sacrificed in Castro.

In the top of the 6h, Casey Daigle would replace former Miracle pitcher Brian Duensing on the mound. He'd allow a double to Greg Porter and one out later, a Double to Duncan to tie up the score. Castro would then reach on a fielding error by Jason Pridie, putting the Yankees on top.

Tim Lahey took over for Daigle in the top of the 8th, allowing a single to Porter. Chris Stewart would move him on a a sac-bunt, and a wild pitch would get Porter to 3rd. Duncan's single brough Porter home. A second single to Castro put 2 men in scoring position when a throwing error by Basak put the ball in the first base dugout. Lahey then walked Gardner intentionally. He got Gonzalez out on strikes, but a walk to Jason Lee forced in the final run of the contest.

Basak was 2-for-3 in the contest but did not figure into the scoring Randy Ruiz and Jose Morales were both 2-for-4 with a run each. Buscher was 3-for-4 with a double.

Garrett Jones went 0-for-3 with a walk, snapping his seven-game hitting streak. Jones has hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games.

The Red Wings had won nine of their last 10 games (includes the 2006 playoff games) vs. Scranton at Frontier Field before Friday.

The paid attendance was 10,566, the largest of the season for the Wings so far.

RHP Bobby Korecky was optioned to Rochester from Minnesota Friday. Korecky appeared in nine games for the Twins, going 1-0 with a 3.48 ERA. Prior to his promotion to Minnesota, Korecky was 2-1 with five saves and a 0.68 ERA in 10 games for Rochester. Korecky was optioned to Rochester to make room for LHP Craig Breslow, who was claimed off waivers from the Cleveland Indians. Breslow was 0-0 with a 3.24 ERA in seven appearances for Cleveland. Korecky was in uniform for Friday's game.

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees pulled out a win in extra innings Saturday at Frontier Field. Chris Steward doubled off former Miracle Julio DePaula. He would be replaced by pinch-runner Bernie Castro. Brett Gardner lay down a sac bunt that moved him to 3rd, and then a wild pitch by DePaula allowed Castro to cross the plate scoring the game winning run.

Alberto Gonzalez's follow up single, and Jason Lane's home run, were just icing on the cake for the Yankees.

The game had been tight up until that point. Francisco Lirino took the start for the Rochester Red Wings. He'd allow a walk to Lane in the first and hit Ben Broussard with a pitch while he struggled with his control, but was able to get Cody Ransom to ground into a force out to end the first inning.

Much like the previous night's game, Darnell McDonald opened up the scoring with a home run to left field in the bottom of the first. S/WB took the run right back however when Justin Christian singled and moved to second on Nick Green's ground out. Eric Duncan then singled out to left to score Christian.

After a scoreless third inning, the Wings would get offensively minded again in the bottom of the 4th when Randy Ruiz and Jose Morales hit back-to-back singles with one out on the board. They moved on a wild pitch by Yankee starter Jeff Karstens. Chris Basak would sacrifice in Ruiz, but the other two would be stranded with Tommy Watkins ground out.

It would take until the bottom of the seventh for the Yankees to tie it up. Bobby Korecky would replace Liriano who'd hit his pitch count after he struck out Christian. Green doubled to greet Korecky, and a Duncan single moved him to 3rd. A wild pitch put Green over the plate for the equalizing run.

Brian Buscher would lead off the bottom of the 10th with a double, but pair of ground outs and a strike out ended the contest.

Morales lead the team at the plate going 3-for-5. McDonald was 2-for-4 with a walk, a run and a run scored. Sergio Santos was 0-for-3 with three strike outs and a walk, and Ruiz was 1-for-5 with a run and a pair of strike outs.

Liriano gave up 1 run on 3 hits and walk while striking out 7 over 6.1 innings for a excellent outing.

The two teams rematch Sunday at 1:35 PM. Phillip Humber (2-5, 5.19) will be on the mound for the Wings against SWB's Dan Giese (4-2, 2.02).

The Red Wings pitching staff has allowed seven home runs in their last six games prior to Saturday (54 innings). Despite this trend Rochester is currently 2nd in fewest home runs allowed (37) in the International League (only Richmond has allowed less, 25). Rochester has not led the IL in fewest home runs allowed in a season since 1976, when they allowed a league low 77 runs.

Friday's crowd of 10,566 was not only the largest crowd of the 2008 season so far, but also the largest May crowd in Frontier Field history. Since Frontier Field opened in 1997, the Red Wings have drawn just five crowds of over 10,000 for a May date..

The Minnesota Twins reinstated infielder Nick Punto from the 15-day disabled list Saturday. To make room for Punto on the 25-man roster, the Twins have designated infielder Howie Clark for release or assignment.

The Rochester Red wins finally snapped their losing skid, rallying past the Buffalo Bisons to win 3-2 in front of a home town crowd at Frontier Field.

The Wings got on the board first, in the bottom of the second inning, courtesy of Randy Ruiz's second home run of the season.

Buffalo would get to Francisco Liriano in the fifth when former Twins farm hand Jason Tyner singled on a bunt, then advanced to 2nd when Liriano thew the ball into the first base dugout. Wyatt Toregas doubled out to left to score Tyner. Following a Josh Barfield fly out, Danny Sandoval would drive Toregas in with a ground ball to center. Sandoval would make things interesting by stealing 2nd and progressing to 3rd on a wild pitch by Liriano, but Michael Aubrey ground out to end the inning before further damage could be done.

Liriano would give up the 2 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5 over six innings for a quality start. I don't think he's ready for Minny quite yet, but he's getting closer.

Darnell McDonald drew a walk in the bottom of the sixth, then moved to 3rd on Brian Buscher's line drive single to Bronson Sardinha in right. Ruiz would then sacrifice McDonald in to tie up the game.

With Bubbie Buzachero on the hill for the Cleveland farm in the bottom of the 7th, Jose Morales singled his way onto the bags. Howie Clark then tripled him in. Clark would try to go home on the play, but was take out at the plate. Still it was a good piece of work for the game winning run. Despite a Denard Span double one out later, the Wings couldn't find the insurance marker, but the Rochester bull pen did the trick.

Ricky Barnett picked up his 2nd win of the season, allowing only 1 hit and striking out 1 over 2 innings. Newly promoted closer Danny Graves picked up his first save at the Triple-A level, blanking the Bisons over the ninth inning.

Morales was 2-for-3 with a run, Buscher was 2-for-4 with a double.

The teams rematch on Sunday at 1:35 for a Mother's Day Special including a post game "Catch with Mom" in the outfield. The first 1,000 kids 14 & under also score a free baseball from Basch & Nicerson.

The Wings will be wearing pink jerseys to raise awareness for Breast Canter with the proceeds of a silent auction for the game worn apparel going to benefit the Pluta Cancer Center.

Before the game, former Miracle infielder Alexi Casilla was told that he was called up to the Minnesota Twins and pulled from the lineup. Chris Basak replaced him.

Fort Myers native Tommy Watkins came up slowly in his second inning at-bat after he legged out an infield hit and dove for first. He stayed in the field but was replaced by Howie Clark for his next at-bat in the fifth inning because he jammed his left thumb and couldn't hold a bat.



Boston 5 at Minnesota 2

Speaking of Minny, former Miracle Glen Perkins allowed 3 runs (earned) on 9 hits while striking out 3 over six inning, but still suffered the loss as the Twins fell, 5-2 to the Red Sox.

Carlos Gomez drew a walk with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 2nd that forced in a run. Justin Morneau would single into center in the bottom of the fifth to plate Matt Tolbert.

Inspired by Kevin Slowey's performance earlier in the week, Perkins would allow back-to-back home runs to Cocoa Crisp and Jed Lowrie in the top of the 7th inning before being replaced by Dennys Reyes. Perkins allowed a solo shot home run in the bottom of the 2nd to Kevin Youkillis as well.
