New Kids in Camp - Position Players

GCL Twins

A few weeks ago I was out at the Minor League Complex early for fielding drills and Danny Rohlfing had J.J. a.k.a. Joe-Hyung Jang, our new catcher from Seoul, South Korea, behind the plate and he was teaching him what to say. J.J. knows what to say, but not in English, so he needs to learn the American words to communicate with his teammates. Granted, the GCL Team often has a very international flavor but on the field, when making the plays, English is spoken. You need to say "I got it" even before you can ask where the restroom is.

The Latin American kids have a leg up on the Asians, because several of the players are bilingual - most notable Winston Marquez who's been the acting translator - as well as pitching coach Ivan Artegea. The Asians pretty much have to wing it, and for J.J., who's going to have to handle a bilingual pitching staff, his job is probably the hardest. But if I can say one thing about the Asians, it's that they are very friendly and extremely willing to learn.

J.J. is one of the two new catchers in camp, the other being Josmir Pinto from San Joaquin, Vz. I've seen J.J. catch once, I've only seen Pinto has a designated hitter. J.J. looks good behind the plate, I liked him right off, even if he wasn't saying much at the time because he didn't yet know what to say. Both kids are 5'11", J.J. is 3 years old and and about 4 pounds heavier then Pinto, which puts them both around 200 each. Both are going to be with the GCL Twins this year. Right now I'm splitting the catchers at Rams, Rohlfing and Soto going to Elizabethon and Diaz, JJ and Pinto staying in Fort Myers. They Twins did draft Jeffrey Lanning out of the University of New Orleans 8th, if/when he signs he'll be going to Elizabethton as well.

The other two Asians in camp, Hyun-Wook Choi ("Wook") an outfielder and Hyeong-Rok Choi ("Rocky"), an infielder, both from Kunsain-Shi, South Korea and, if their birthdates are correct, not brothers, both have shown a lot of enthusiasm. Rocky is 5'10", 202 lbs, while Wook is 6', 200 lbs. Rocky was making contact more often with the ball from the games I've seen. Wook strikes out a lot, but has some pretty good fielding skills.

Also new in the outfield is Tim Atherton from Australia (6'2", 196), Jonathan Goncalves (5'11", 174) and Herbert ("Can we call him Bert?") Lara (5'11" 160) both from Venezuela. I've not seen Goncalves play, and I've seen Atherton on the field only once. Bert is by far the interesting one as he's switch hitter with good speed, and also - much like Jeanfred Brito or Ben Revere - a spark plug type guy for the team. He's been hitting in the lead off spot or at the very bottom of the order, they like to put their two speed guys in those two spots. He gets a hit, usually a single and gets on base and that's what's needed. I haven't seen any indication that he has the skill or range of of say either Revere or Brito, but that may come as he plays more regularly. Atherton was batting in the five spot when I was him, and as I'd read a lot about him, I was hoping to be impressed, but I can't say that I was. All three are wait and see prospects at this point, but I like Bert the best of the three.

Jakum Hajtmar was here for extended spring training last year, but was sent back to academy. He seems a little stronger this year, so he he should stick with the team. He's 6'2", 174 lbs, Czech Republic kid and he plays infield - 3rd base was where I last saw him. The only other new infielders is Hidalgo Anderson, 5'9", 185 lbs from Venezela. If I'm reading my scribblings correctly, he was also at 3rd base, but we don't actually have a legitimate 1st baseman with Walt off to E-Town so I'm assuming one or the other could switch corners. He was hitting lower down in the order, but did come up with a big double when we needed it. Both bat right and in fact right now it appears the only infielder we'll have with a lefty bat is Reggie Williams as Waltenbury, Brito and Beresford are likely off to E-Town.

Bert is a switch hitter however, and Wook, in the outfield also swings left. Right now I'm thinking that Lara will be the kid to watch out of the position players, but we'll see how things pan out once the season gets going.

(Henceforth, if you hear me babbling about Bert, Wook, JJ or Rocky, you'll know who I'm babbling about.)

None of the prospects have stats on MiLB.com. I think the ones for the VSL Twins from last year were deleted when the team ID was, although I've been able to access box scores from individual games.

Minor League Splits shows Lara with 29 runs on 46 hits in 161 AT (.286 average), 7 doubles, 1 triple, 13 RBIs, 25 BB, 21 So, .392 OBP and .342 SLG.

Goncalves had 20 runs on 35 hits, 136 AB (35 games, .257 AVG) with 3 doubles, a triple, 7 runs scored, 11 BB and 26 Strike outs. OBP of .325 and Slugging of .294.

Wang-Wei Lin, from Taiwan, is still in camp but started on the rehab list, and I've not seen him play yet this year. He was very lightly used last year and not much of a hitter, 10 runs on 12 hits in 62 at bats (.194 average) in 24 games. I can't image a scenario where he isn't repeating GCL unless he's released.

That's pretty much it for the new position players. I'll try to work my head around the pitchers, for the which the information is sometimes better and sometimes even spottier than the position players.

I will also try to get a look a the new draftees this weekend at Mini-camp. I imagine most of the ones they sign earlier will be college players headed for Elizabethton and that they'll work on the High School kids a little later.

Cats crushed by B-Mets

New Britain Rock Cats

New Britain 4 at Binghamton 17

W: E. Brown (3-5, 6.83); L: J. Rainville (5-6, 7.58)
HR: NBR: D. Winfree (11), B. Peterson (6). BIN: M. Carp 2 (9), E. Garcia 2 (2), R. Arroyo (1).

Oh, unhappy day! Jay Rainville got pummeled by the Binghamton Mets, allowing 11 earned runs on 10 hits (2 home runs) and 2 walks in 1.2 innings. Jason Miller and Jay Sawatski faired only slightly better in the New Britain Rock Cats worst blow out of the season.

After a turn around that saw Rainville turning in win after win, the young hurler got off to a very rough start with Eric Reed singling and Nick Evans doubling in the bottom of the 1st. Dan Murphy sacrificed in Reed for the first of many B-Mets runs. Caleb Stewart doubled to bring in Evans. Following a pop out to Mike Carp, Josh Peterson doubled in Stewart. Jose Coronado would take a walk, and Emmanuel Garcia went yard over the right field wall to bring in Peterson and Coronado. Rafael Arroyo lined out to finish the inning. If Mr. Rainville felt relieved at that point, it ws because he had no idea what was coming.

David Winfree went yard over the center field fence in the top of the 2nd to put the Rock Cats on the board. It was his 11th home run of the season.

Reed started off the 2nd with a walk then stole 2nd. He'd try to steal 3rd, but got caught by catcher Drew Butera. Evans, Murphy, and Stewart all singled to load the bags so that Carp put hit a grand slam over the right field wall. Peterson would fly out to left before Coronado doubled. Jason Miller came in from the bullpen at that point. The Sarasota, Florida, native promptly gave up back-to-back home runs to Garcia and Arroyo, then hit Reed by a pitch, probably out of frustration. Evans and Murphy both doubled before Stewart ground out to end a very brutal inning.

(Dear Mr. Manship, are you sure you want to get promoted into the middle of that mess?)

Dustin Martin took a walk in the top of the 3rd and Brock Peterson homered him in, but the Cats had a lot of cat-ching up to do.

The B-Mets would give them a bit of break though. Toby Gardenhire singled out to left. Following a fly out by Butera, Steve Tolleson doubled that put Gardenhire at 3rd. He'd be plated by Dustin Martin's ground out.

Jay Sawatski would replace Jason Miller in the bottom of the 5th. Since they hadn't scored off him yet, Stewart took a walk and Carp went yard to bring him in. Happily the B-Mets decided to give it a rest after that.

Unhappily, the Rock Cats would get Winfree to 3rd base in the top of the 6th and strand him there. They'd find little offense over the remainder of the game.

Winfree finished up 2-for-4 with a run and a run scored. Trevor Plouffe was also 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Peterson was 1-for-4, with a run and 2 runs scored on the yarder, but he also struck out 3 times. Tolleson had a pair of strike outs to go with his fifth inning double.

Thoroughly whipped, the Pussy Cats got on the bus, tails tucked, and headed for home, where they will host the Altoona Curve for a three-game series starting Tuesday.

(Monday they'll be playing poker to see which one of their unlucky lot gets to pitch, since it appears that anyone who gets on the mound up there is going to get lit up.)

Rochester 4 at Lehigh Valley 5

W: M. Childers (3-2, 3.38); L: B. Korecky (3-2, 3.26)
HR: ROC: R. Ruiz (7).

Randy Ruiz seventh home run of the season was not enough for the Rochester Red Wings to overcome the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs Sunday afternoon.

The Red Wings put 14 hits on the board to Lehigh's 10, but it's the runs that count, not the hits.

Ruiz opened up the top of the 4th by going yard. Following a pair of outs, Sergio Santos singled and moved to 2nd on a wild pitch by Lehigh starter Travis Blackley. Chris Basak would take a walk before Tommy Watkins' fly ball to right plated Santos.

Kevin Mulvey worked four relatively quiet innings before the Iron Pigs got started in the bottom of the 5th. With one out on the board, Jon Knott walked. John Suomi poped out before Knott stole second. Brennan King then singled out to left to score Knott.

In the bottom of the 6th, Mike Rouse singled and Brandon Watson doubled. Rich Thompson brought the pair in with a single to center field. Mike Cervanak flew out before back-to-back singles to Andy Tracy and Knott signaled the end of Mulvey's tenure on the mound. Ricky Barnett would come into get John Suomi to hit into a double play to end the inning.

With Jason Anderson on the mound for the Iron Pigs, Ruiz doubled with two outs on the board. Robert Swindle would replace Anderson, and Brian Buscher greeted him with a line drive single that scored Ruiz. Jose Morales and Santos hit back-to-back singles that scored Buscher before Chris Basak poped out to end the inning with the game tied.

Tim Lahey worked 1.1 innings for the Wings, allowing 1 hit and 2 walks while striking out 1 to take the game into the ninth. Bobby Korecky would come in to get the final two outs in the bottom of regulation gametime. Thompson would greet him with a single in the bottom of the 10th. Mike Cervenak ground into a force out which took out Thompson, but Tracy would double out to right to plate Cervanak, ending the game.

Darnell McDonald was 3-for-6 in the game. Watkins, Ruiz, Busher and Santos were all 2-for-5, Ruiz with a double, a pair of runs and a run scored on the yarder, Buscher and Santos each with a run and a RBI and Watkins with a run scored. Basak was 2-for-4 with a double.

The Red Wings offense has hit at least one home run in 11 straight games. Rochester left 17 runners on base for the second straight game. The Twins triple-A affiliate fell to a 4-14 in games played on Saturday and Sunday.

The two teams rematch Monday with Brian Duensing (2-5, 3.96) taking on Les Walrond (1-4, 3.09) in a battle of the lefties with a 7:05 start.

Miracle blanked by Brevard

Fort Myers Miracle

Fort Myers 0 at Brevard County 5

W: J. Butler (2-7, 5.31); L: J. Manship (7-3, 2.86)
HR: None.

Evidently the Brevard County Manatees had no intention of letting the Fort Myers Miracle clinch a division title in their stadium. Or perhaps Jeff Smith forgot to mention they needed to put some offense together to win games.

Jeff Manship allowed 3 runs - earned - on six hits while striking out 3 over six innings of work; a quality start, but still not one of his better performances. (Sorry Manny, but we raise the standard for you.)

The Miracle had the bases loaded in the first, but Eli Tintor struck out to end the inning.

Brevard opened up the scoring in the bottom of the 4th when Jimmy Mojica singled then stole 2nd. Taylor Green's ground out moved him to 3rd, and he'd be plated by a Charlie Fermaint line drive to center.

In the bottom of the sixth, singles to Mojica, Cain and Green loaded the bases. Mojica scored on Fermaint's ground out, and a Stephen Chapman sac fly brought in Cain.

Danny Santiesteban would get on base with singles in the top of the second and the top of the 7th, but would get picked off at first on both occasions.

Matt Fox replaced Manship in the bottom of the 7th. After getting Kenny Holmberg out on strikes, Anderson De La Rosa and Yohannis Perez hit back to back singles. Mojica sacrificed in De La Rosa and Cain tripled to drive in Perez.

The bottom of the 8th would see Blair Erickson replace Fox on the mound. He'd allow a double to Chapman, but was able to leave the runner stranded.

The Miracle found a pair of singles in the top of the 9th, but it was all they could muster with the bottom of the order going down meekly.

Fort Myers heads home to host the Vero Beach Devil Rays for a four-game series starting on Monday. Deolis Guerra (6-2, 4.89) will get the start on the mound for the Miracle. Much as I like Señor Guerra as an individual, I am still not overwhelmed by his pitching abilities. Perhaps he will offer the Miracle fans a pleasant surprise after last Wednesday's performance.

The Palm Beach Cardinals secured their playoff berth on Saturday despite dropping a 7-5 decision to the Tampa Yankees. The blanking of the Brevard County Manatees on Saturday by the Fort Myers Miracle put the Manatees 8 games behind Palm Beach with 8 left to play. The first half of the FSL season ends June 18, 2008. (They should really send a thank you note to Mr. Devries for pitching such a fine game on Saturday, don't you think?)

I thought you liked to let them have fun?

The Twins prefer to wait until the FSL All-Star Game to promote a few Miracle players, but they will be forced to do it earlier this year.

"We'll move them now if we can clinch the first half," said Jim Rantz, Twins director of minor leagues. "We have a couple guys who have earned promotions. You have to challenge them. Plus, I have some injuries [at New Britain] that I'm dealing with." (Strib)

Beloit 3 at Kane County 4

W: S. Mitchinson (5-2, 1.60); L: D. Bromberg (4-4, 4.65); SV: C. Kerfoot (2)
HR: None.

The Kane County Cougars took four runs off David Bromberg in the fifth inning and hung on to defeat the Beloit Snappers, 4-2 at Elfstrom Stadium.

The Snappers got on the board first. Chris Parmelee would be plunked with a pitch. He'd then steal 2nd base. A sac-bunt by Jair Fernandez got him to 3rd. Following a walk to Steve Singleton, Joe Benson hit into a ground out that scored Parmelee.

Bromberg worked 7 innings, allowing 5 hits and a pair of walks while striking out 5. Larry Cobb started out the bottom of the 5th by hitting a fly ball single off Bromberg. Corey Brown would ground into a force out, which took Cobb out. Dusty Napoleon singled to move Brown to 2nd and Daniel Hamblin took a free pass off Bromberg to load the bags. Justin Frash then walked to force in a run. Shane Keough's line drive to right brought in Napoleon and Hamblin. Adam Klein would sacrifice in Frash for the fourth run before Bromberg got Matt Ray out on strikes.

Cougar starter Scott Mitchinson must have been on a foul mood, as he would hit Ben Revere with a pitch to start off the top of the sixth. Revere paid him back by stealing 2nd, and advanced to 3rd on a throwing error by Napoleon. Chris Cates would single to drive in Revere cutting the Cougars lead in half.

Mark Dolenc would single a line drive to center and Revere doubled to plate him in the top of the 8th. That would do it for Mitchinson as the Aussie hurler was taken from the mound in favor of Justin Friend. Despite a sac-bunt and walk, the Snappers would leave Revere stranded at 3rd and the tying run unscored.

Matt Williams pitched a perfect 8th inning for Beloit, striking out 2.

Cates was 2-for-3 in the contest. Steve Singleton picked up a double in the top of the 5th but could do nothing with it.

The Snappers return to Pohlman Field to host a four-game series starting on Monday against the Cedar Rapid Kernels. Mike Tarsi (3-7, 5.62) will throw out the first pitch for Beloit at 7:00 PM central time.

Road not kind to Cats, Wings

New Britain Rock Cats

New Britain 0 at Binghamton 3

W: J. Sanchez (6-4, 4.57); L: K. Aselton (2-1, 4.04); SV: T. Lavigne (4)
HR: BIN: N. Evans (9).

Offense seemed to be at a premium in the Twins minor league system, but while the Cats outhit the B-Mets, they couldn't out run, not being able to string enough together to cross the plate.

Jose Sanchez struck out 9 over six innings for Binghamton. He allowed 6 hits to New Britain and one walk.

Brock Peterson would single in the first inning with 2 outs on the board, Erik Lis then doubled, but Peterson would be taken out at home plate, saving the run and retiring the side.

Steve Tolleson doubled in the top of the 3rd, but would be picked off at second base.

In the bottom of that inning, Jonathan Mato doubled with one out on the board. Jose Coronado hit a line drive to right so plate him. Nick Evans then went yard over the right center field fence to give the B-Mets two more, for a 3-0 lead.

Taking a Bullpen start, Kyle Aselton would work 4 innings allowing the 3 runs on 3 hits while striking out only 1. Armando Gabino worked the next 3 allowing only 2 hits and striking out 3.

Lis doubled in to the top of the fourth, and following a strike out to David Winfree, Moses walked. Toby Gardenhire would ground into a double play however as the Cats continued to chase futility.

Back-to-back singles to Matt Moses and Gardenhire in the top of the 7th put two runners on base. He'd advance on a wild pitch by reliever Eddie Camacho. Felix Molina would be called out on strike, but Jeff Christy would walk to load the bags. Dustin Martin then ground into a force out, ending the inning.

Moses would go 3-for-3 with a walk at the plate, Peterson and Lis were 2-for-4. Christy was 1-for-3 with a walk and Tolleson was 1-for-5 with a double. Gardenhire was the lone one hit wonder, while the rest of the team Martin, Molina and Winfree all came up empty.

The Cats finish up the series with a 1:05 game today then head home to host the Altoona Curve for a three game homestand starting on Tuesday. Eric Brown (2-5, 6.79) will start for the B-Mets against Jay Rainville (5-5, 6.02) of New Britain.

Rochester 2 at Lehigh Valley 8

W: G. Knotts (2-1, 3.25); L: D. Graves (2-1, 3.68)
HR: ROC: J. Morales (3).

It's a fairly well known fact by now that this year's version of the Rochester Red Wings isn't a road team (10-24 away), but I'm sure that being trounced by the lowly Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs probably has the whole city howling.

Danny Graves gave up 3 runs on 7 hit and 4 walks while striking out 1 over four innings. Julio DePaula surrendered 3 more runs on 3 hits and 1 walks while striking out 2 over 2 innings. Carmen Cali allowed the final two runs on four hits and a walk in the final 2 innings while fanning 2.

Rochester would be kept off the board until the top of the 7th inning, when John Ennis replaced Gary Knotts on the mound. Jose Morales would greet him with a home run, his 3rd of the season. Sergio Santos and Ryan Jorgenson both singled. Tommy Watkins would ground into a double play that put Santos on 3rd. Jason Pride would single drive the run in for the Cats two.

Morales finished up 2-for-3 with a walk, a run and a RBI, Ryan Jorgensen was 2-for-4 while Pridie was 2-for-5.

The good: The Red Wings offense has hit at least one home run in 10 straight games. The bad: Randy Ruiz had his eight-game hitting streak snapped. The ugly: The Wings struck out 10 times, most in a game so far this season.

Howie Clark left the game with an abdominal strain in the fifth inning. He'll be re-evaluated today.

The two teams rematch on Sunday for a 1:35 game.

Error downs Snappers in extra innings

Beloit Snappers

Beloit 4 at Kane County 5

W: L. Espinal (3-0, 3.18); L: S. Steedley (2-3, 2.38)
HR: BEL: C. Parmelee (12), S. Singleton (5), G. Olson (4). KCC: L. Cobb (4).

The Beloit Snappers rallied late, breaking a shut out in the 8th inning to tie the game, but could not hold off the Kane County Cougars in the 10th.

Santos Arias gave up 3 runs, only one earned, on 9 hits over six innings. He fanned six. Kane County's Scott Hodsdon limited the Snappers to only 5 hits and a walk, striking out 2 over the same period.

Beloit would not put anything together until the 8th. Following a line out by Mark Dolenc, Ben Revere would be plunked by a pitch. He'd be picked off however when he attempted to steal 2nd, putting two outs on the board. Chris Cates then took a walk off Cougar pitcher Nick Walters. Garrett Olson put his 4th home run over the center field wall to bring in 2. Chris Parmelee followed that up with his 12 yarder of the season over the right field fence. It was Parmelee's fourth in the last three games.

With the game tied, Steve Singleton found the right field fence as well for a solo shot home run in the top of the 9th. Spencer Steedley came into the game in the bottom of the 9th, but the All-star would surrender a home run to Larry Cobb, to put the contest into extra innings.

Cates would single in the 10th, but Olson and Parmelee were taken out on strikes and Ozzie Lewis ground out to end the inning.

Dusty Napoleon singled to short in the 10th, then moved to second on a sac bunt. Jonathan Johnston was intentionally walked, before Justin Frash hit a line drive that loaded the bases. Adam Klein would reach on a catcher interference call on Greg Yersich to force in the the run, and end the contest.

(Good going Mr. Yersich.)

Cates and Parmelee were both 3-for-4 with a run each, Parms with a RBI as well. Revere was the only one hit wonder for the game, with a single in the sixth inning.

The final game of the series is Sunday at 1:00 PM central time. David Bromberg (4-3, 4.60) will be on the mound for the Snappers while the Cougars will send Scott Mitchinson (4-2, 1.34) to throw out the first pitch.

DSL White Sox1 1 at DSL TWins 2

W: L. Parra (1-0, 0.00); L: C. Zabala (0-1, 1.69); SV: E. Alvarez (1)
HR: DSL TWI: F. Caro (1).

The DSL Twins scored a pair of runs in the sixth inning to rally back to win against the DSL White Sox1.

Pedro Guerra took the start for the Twins, allowing 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 4 over 4 innings.

Ariel Williams singled in the first for the White Sox1 and advanced to second on a missed catch by the Twins' Rafael Sanchez. Victor Marte's ground out would get Williams to 3rd. Ronald Lora then doubled him in. Following a strike out to Luis Acuna, Lora would be taken out at 3rd on a fielder's choice to retire the side.

That would be all the White Sox1 could get though. They would get as far as putting a runner on third with 2 outs in the top of the sixth, but could not capitalize.

Felix Caro tied up the game in the bottom of the sixth by going yard over the left field fence for his first home run of the year. First baseman Jean Carlos Mercedes doubled out to center. Yorby Martinez would come into the game as a pinch hitter and moved Mercedes to 3rd on a sac-bunt. Xavier Gonzalez would go down on strikes. Following a pitching change which brought Juan Rojas to the mound for the White Sox1, Yancarlo Franco would reach on a fielding error that scored Mercedes for the game winning run.

The visitors never really threatened as former VSL All-star Edison Alvarez worked the final two innings to earn the save.

The Twins managed a total of only four hits in the game. Caro, Mercedes and Gonzalez each had one as did Eliel Sierra.

The DSL TWins take Sunday off, and will visit the DSL Indians on Monday for a 10:30 AM (Dominican Time) game.
