FSL All-Star Break - No Game Scheduled
Beloit 2 at Quad Cities 6
Record 45-26
W: P. Walters (6-1, 2.62); L: A. Hawes (3-7, 4.37); SV: E. Hernandez (1)
HR: None.
From swingbaseball.com: It was an all-around all-star performance by the Swing of the Quad Cities at John O’Donnell Stadium on this last day of the first half of the 2007 Midwest League season. Swing pitchers P.J. Walters and Elvis Hernandez, who will be taking the trip to Kane County for Tuesday’s All-Star festivities, shut down a Beloit Snappers offense that was seemingly unstoppable in the first two games of the series.
Quad Cities (38-31) got on the board early and maintained the lead right up through the last pitch thrown by Elvis Hernandez in the final frame. The Swing found themselves down 1-0 in the bottom of the second, but took advantage of two walks and a Beloit error to put them ahead for good.
Jared Schweitzer, playing first base for only the third time this season, worked the count full and took first with a leadoff walk. Two outs later, another base on balls brought Donovan Solano to the plate. After Solano singled and moved the runners forward, scoring Schweitzer, speedy Daryl Jones stepped into the box and put pressure on the Beloit defense. Knocking a grounder to the left side of the infield, Jones turned on the speed, and the Snappers shortstop was forced to make a rushed throw that went wide to first, pulling the defender off the bag and allowing the runner on third to come home, giving the Swing a 2-1 lead that they would never relinquish.
Christian Lopez, another Swing All-Star, was 2-for-3 with a walk in the game, including a sixth-inning triple that found the gap in right field and brought home Wilmer Alvarado for Quad Cities’ sixth run of the game.
For the first time in this series with Beloit (44-26), neither team hit a home run. The longest ball hit on this day was the last out of the game, a deep fly ball to left field that pushed Lopez back against the wall in the top of the ninth.
Walters (6-1) was rewarded with the win with a five-inning effort in which he struck out six, while only allowing three hits and two runs (one earned). Hernandez pitched a nearly-perfect four innings, allowing only one base runner to get on board via a walk.
