From redwingsbaseball.com/Milb.com: Red Wings starter Brian Duensing (8-2) scattered three hits and two walks with four strikeouts over seven frames, helping the Red Wings to a 3-0 win over first place Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Saturday night. Julio DePaula pitched around a walk in the eighth and Bobby Korecky tossed a perfect ninth for his 28th save. With the win, Rochester moved within two games of the Yankees; the teams meet again Sunday in Pennsylvania followed by a pair of games at Frontier Field Monday and Tuesday.

Ian Kennedy, New York's first round pick in 2006, tossed six scoreless innings in his Triple-A debut for Scranton. Kennedy yielded two hits and two walks with six strikeouts in his first start since being promoted from Double-A Trenton, where he went 5-1 with a 2.59 ERA in nine outings.

The 22-year-old right-hander was 6-1 with a 1.29 ERA in 11 appearances, including 10 starts, at Class A Advanced Tampa.

Chris Heintz walked and scored on Denard Span's two-out single in the seventh to snap the scoreless tie and Doug Deeds hit a solo homer, his seventh, in the ninth for Rochester (58-50).

Reliever Scott Williamson (0-1) took the loss after allowing one run on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts in the seventh

NOTES: The last three times Rochester has entered play on July 28th seven games or more over .500, they’ve made the International League playoffs (1993, 1997, and 2006)...DePaula has been lights out his last 12 games, going 4-0 with a 1.25 ERA. In 22.2 innings of work, DePaula has allowed just three runs on 14 hits while walking just four and striking out 23.

Red Wings RHP Kevin Slowey currently leads the International League with a 1.87 ERA. He’s looking to become the second Red Wings pitcher to win the ERA title in the last three years (RHP Scott Baker 3.01 ERA in 2005). If Slowey can hold on to the ERA title it would be the first time since 1931-1993 that Rochester has had two ERA champions in a three-year period (1931 RHP Ray Starr 2.83 ERA and 1933 Fritz Ostermueller 2.44 ERA).

W: J. Hill (2-0, 4.26); L: R. Romero (0-5, 4.88); SV: T. Lahey (9)
HR: NBR: D. Winfree (8).

From nhfishercats.com: Ricky Romero pitched the second complete game of his professional career, but Josh Hill and Tim Lahey combined on a six-hit shutout as the New Britain Rock Cats topped the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 3-0, in the opening game of a day-night doubleheader at Merchantsauto.com Stadium.

David Winfree went 2-for-3 with an RBI double in the fourth inning and a solo home run in the seventh for New Britain (48-53), which snapped a six-game losing streak.

Garrett Guzman drove in the Rock Cats’ first run with the RELCO Enlightening Play of the Game, a fourth-inning double that scored Trevor Plouffe (walk) all the way from first base.

Romero (0-5) allowed three hits on six hits in seven innings. He struck out two and walked two.

Hill (2-0) scattered five hits over the first five innings to pick up the win, striking out four and walking one. In two starts at Merchantsauto.com Stadium, Hill has pitched 10 scoreless innings.

Lahey recorded his eighth save in nine opportunities with two shutout innings of relief.

New Hampshire (54-51) threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning when Dustin Majewski ended an 0-for-24 skid with a two-out double and Manny Mayorson (2-for-3, BB) walked. But Lahey induced a game-ending grounder from Ryan Patterson (1-for-4) to hand the Fisher Cats only their third shutout loss of the season.

HR: NBR: L. Hughes 2 (7), K. Geiger (4). NHM: S. Santos (17).

I missed this one earlier. I find it amusing as I keep asking..."What the heck is a Fisher Cat?":

A matter of utmost importance must be cleared up before the Fisher Cats host a six-game series against their feline foe, the New Britain Rock Cats, beginning tonight at 7:05.

Exactly what the heck is a Rock Cat? The question can be avoided no longer as the Twins affiliate prepares to spend the next five days in Manchester, marking the longest home series (six games) in club history.

Does the Cat inhabit rock quarries of Connecticut? Can it dance? The name "Rock Cats" sounds a little like "Rockettes," don't you think? Who would win a battle along the Merrimack River for a washed-up salmon? A Fisher Cat or Rock Cat?

Let's just say the chiseled Fisher Cat mascot, Slider, wouldn't miss any meals if Rocky from New Britain made the trip. Rocky's no fighter.

The original Rock Cat in the mid-1990s -- back when the team was named the Hardware City Rock Cats -- was marketed as a "leather-wearing, guitar-playing, motorcycle-riding cat," according to current New Britain vice president Evan Levy. New ownership took over in 2000, and the rock ?n' roll cat gradually evolved into today's version, rebranded as a friendly athletic cat wearing a baseball glove on its paw.

"He still likes music. He's into swing music," Levy said, "but he's more of a ball-playing cat." Union Leader

Jason Giambi prepares to be struck out

Anthony Claggett limited the Miracle to 3 hits and stuck out 2 over five innings to pace the Tampa Yankees to a 4-1 win over the Fort Myers Miracle in the first game of a double header Saturday at Hammond Stadium.

While the game got off to a late start, the Yankees did not, jumping on starter Jeff Manship in the second inning. A passed ball by Jeff Christy alloed Marcos Vechionacci to reach first base on a 3-strike dropped ball. Manship's wild pitch then moved him to second, but it was probably unnecessary, as Jarad Greenwood tripled off Manship to bring him in. Greenwood was taken out at home when Robbie Minor reached on a fielder's choice, but Christopher Kunda and Austin Jackson both singled to bring him in. Kunda would be plated by Chris Malec, and Jason Giambi would be issued a walk, before Jose Tabata would ground out to end the inning.

Manship struck Giambi out in the first inning, with the Yankees' slugger going 0-for-2 at the plate and taking another walk late before being replaced by pinch runner Tim Battle. The seventh inning walk pushed Malec into scoring position for the Yankees. He moved to 3rd on a Jose Tabata fly out and came home on Edward Gonzalez's single for the Yankees fourth run.

Meanwhile, the Miracle remained largely toothless, with only Steve Tolleson getting multiple hits in the game.

Dinkelman drew a walk off reliever David Robertson, and moved to 2nd on a wild pitch. Tolleson's line drive to center would score him, the only tally for the Fort Myers team who avoided another shut out.

The three Yankees runs off Manship were unearned, coming on 8 hits and 1 walk, while Manship struck out 4 over 5 innings. Morlan gave up the only earned run in the game in 2 hits and 1 walk while striking out 3.

The teams took a short break, while the fans eyed the skies, wondering if they'd get two in tonight.

Tampa 2 at Fort Myers 4

Record 18 - 19

W: D. Shinskie (6-3, 3.40); L: W. Arias (6-2, 4.78); SV: R. Delaney (2)
HR: FTM: J. Woodard (5).

E: Gabino (1, throw).

In the end though, it turned into a beautiful evening at the Joe as the second game got underway with southpaw Kyle Aselton take the start on the mound and getting his chance to strike out Jason Giambi in the first inning.

It also turned into a busy night for the trainers, with the Tim Battle taking the first injury during a walk to first in the 3rd inning.

Toby Gardenhire also took a walk, in the bottom of the inning, and moved to 3rd when Brian Dinkelman's single was deflected off second baseman Kevin Russo. He came home on Erik Lis' single.

Gardenhire, who was playing 3rd base in the game, used his catching skills when he blocked a ball at third, to turn what would have a been a double into a ground out later in the game. That's one of the amusing things about Gardy, he's not afraid to go for the unconventional saves when playing.

So the Miracle got on the board early but it was short lived as Armando Gabino came in for his shot at striking out Giambi. Reegie Corona singled his way onto base, and moved to 3rd on a passed ball by catcher Alex Soto. Jackson would like up before Giambi would step up the plate. It would be along at bat, as he fouled a ball back off the umpire, and there was a break while the trainers checked to make sure Anthony West was still able to continue the game. Giambi then doubled to bring in Corona, tying up the score. He'd be left stranded at 2nd through with Jose Tabata and Chris Malec both grounding out to end the inning.

The game would stay tied until the sixth when the Yankees made a tactical error, issuing a walk to Edward Ovalle to get at Johnny Woodard, who is only hitting .165 on the season. Woody may not connect much, but then he does, look out. He went yard for his 5th home run of the season, bring in Erik Lis, who'd been hit by a pitch as well as Ovalle.

Closer Rob Delaney allowed a run with Jarad Greenwood scored off a Kevin Russo double, but managed to take Corona out on strikes to end the game.

David Shinskie would be the last of the victims in the game, taking a line drive off his foot, but he was able to continue and earned with the win for the Miracle. He also got a chance to play "Let's Strike Out Giambi", making the most of his opportunity in the sixth inning.

Field Manager Kevin Boles was ejected from the game in the 5th after umpire Jason Cooksey made a controversial call that ruled Francisco Cervelli safe at second. Luis Ugueto, who made a rather acrobatic play at the plate also felt that Cooksey was in error and for a moment it looked like Cooksey was going to toss him too, but he was allowed to continue the game.

Sunday is a nearly league wide off day with only one East Division game being played. The Miracle remain at home to face the Dunedin Blue Jays for three.

South Bend 6 at Beloit 7

Record 20 - 13

W: D. Leatherman (7-3, 3.63); L: J. Urquidez (0-1, 0.00); SV: A. Slama (4)
HR: SOU: B. Miller (18), R. Mercado (4). BEL: J. Benson (5).

From snappersbaseball.com: Eleven combined runs between the two teams in the first four innings resulted in the Snappers second win of the series. Dan Leatherman pitched two innings of scoreless relief to pick up his seventh win and lead the Snappers to a 7-6 victory over South Bend.

After the Silver Hawks scored a run in the top of the first inning, Beloit answered right back with two of their own in the bottom half. Joe Benson led the bottom of the first inning off with his fifth home run of the season. Garrett Olson followed Benson with a double and was driven home two batters later on a Chris Parmelee RBI groundout. Parmelee’s RBI gave the Snappers a 2-1 lead.

South Bend scored three more in the top of the second inning, only to be topped by three runs by the Snappers in the bottom of the second. Sacrifice flies from Chris Cates and Joe Benson and an RBI single from Garrett Olson gave Beloit a 5-4 lead after two.

The Silver Hawks scored single runs in both the third and fourth innings to take a 6-5 lead, a lead they would not hold for long.

Chris Cates delivered a game tying RBI single left in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the score at 6-6. Cates drove home Eli Tintor, who earlier singled, from third.

Garrett Olson singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning and was then driven home off the bat of Wilson Ramos. Ramos singled to right and drove Olson home giving Beloit all the runs they would need. Wilson’s RBI made it a 7-6 Snappers’ lead after seven innings.

Anthony Slama pitched an inning of scoreless relief to pick up his fourth save of the season and seal the deal for the Snappers. Beloit’s second half record is now 20-13.

Elizabethton Twins - Off

Record 24 - 10

Elizabethton takes Friday and Saturday off and plays a double header Sunday at home against the Greeneville Astros.

GCL Twins 3 at GCL Orioles 2

Current Record: 23 - 8

W: C. Nolte (2-0, 1.04); L: S. Taveras (0-1, 3.00)
HR: None.

E: Arias, S 2 (5, pickoff, pickoff).

Saturday's contest was a big game between the 2nd placed Orioles and the 1st placed Twins at Twin Lakes Park. The Orioles have been chasing the Twins for the division lead all season, and the Twins have had problems hitting the lefties the Orioles have throwing against them.

It looked like that might be the case again, with the O's taking a pair of runs off starter Santos Arias in the early innings.

Lee Ellis singled his way onto the bags in the second inning and moved to 2nd on Arias wayward pick off attempt. A Luis Bernardo single to right allowed him to score to put the home team on the board. Bernardo moved to second on a passed ball by Danny Rohlfing, but was taken out at the plate when he tried to come home on a Joe DiGeronimo line drive.

Baltimore's Nicholas Ray drew a walk to start the 3rd inning, and moved to second when Arias again mis-threw on a pick off attempt. A Tyler Kolodny fly out moved him to 3rd and he came home on Nolan Reimold's line drive single to center. A ground out and a pop out ended the scoring threat for the inning.

Meanwhile the Twins did manage a few singles off right hander Raul Rivero, but could do nothing with them for the first four innings.

In the fifth, a Ramon Santana single got the Twins started and a Ben Revere double put two players in scoring position. Santana Scored on Yangervis Solarte's sac fly, while Juan Richardson plated Revere with a double to tie the game.

Neither club could gain ground on the other though until a late inning Sac fly by Santana brought in Andrew Schmiesing to give the Twins the lead. It was then up to Charles Nolte who made things a bit interesting by allowing a single and throwing a wild pitch, but struck out 3 to end the contest.

Brito was 2-for-5 at the plate, Revere was 2-for-4 with a run and at least one of his daily highlight reel catches, Richardson and Rohlfing were each 2-for-4 as was Schmiesing, who also had a run. Danny Rams, who played 1st base, was 0-for-4 with 2 strike outs.

The Twins take Sunday off, and host the Pirates Monday at noon, rain permitting. Sunday's match between the Reds and the Red Sox at City of Palms park has already fallen victim to a Thunderstorm.
