Richmond 3 at Rochester 0

Record 24-20

W: L. Cormier (1-0, 0.00); L: J. Cummings (3-2, 3.08); SV: B. Boyer (2)
HR: None.

From redwingsbaseball.com: Three Richmond pitchers held the Red Wings to six hits, as the Braves blanked the Wings 3-0 Monday afternoon at Frontier Field. It was the second straight shutout loss for Rochester. Tommy Watkins had a single and double for the Wings.

Atlanta pitcher Lance Cormier was making a rehab start (strained right triceps) for Richmond, after a pair of Double-A rehab starts and one Class A appearance. Cormier retired the first six Rochester batters he faced, with Watkins' double to start the third the first Wings baserunner on the day.

Red Wings starter Jeremy Cummings walked the bases loaded in the second inning, but didn't allow a run. In the third inning, Richmond scored a run on Yunel Escobar's RBI double. Cummings picked off both Gregor Blanco (at first) and Escobar to minimize the damage in the inning. The Braves put up two more runs in the fourth, recording three straight singles off Cummings with one out.

Cormier ran into trouble in the sixth, allowing a single to Doug Deeds, followed by a hit and run with Deeds and Denard Span that put runners at the corners with none out. But the Wings ran themselves out of the inning, with Deeds getting caught between home and first for the first out. Then, Alexi Casilla and Span were on base and Casilla appeared to forgot the number of outs, getting thrown out after Trent Oeltjen's strikeout.

Jose Mijares made his Triple-A Debut, throwing three scoreless innings and allowing a hit and two walks while striking out three. J.P. Martinez pitched a scoreless ninth.

Beloit 0 at Quad Cities 1

Record 30-17

W: K. Mura (2-0, 0.63); L: A. Burnett (3-3, 3.07); SV: K. Maiques (10)
HR: None.

E: Valencia (6, fielding).

From swingbaseball.com: The Swing of the Quad Cities and the Beloit Snappers traded shutouts during Monday afternoon’s Memorial Day doubleheader at John O’Donnell Stadium, as the Swing took a 1-0 decision in the opener before losing in game two, 4-0. The afternoon was dominated by pitching, as the two teams combined to score in just two of the 28 half-innings.

Quad Cities (27-23) set themselves up for a golden opportunity to pull to within three games of first place after winning the opener, but a strong pitching performance by the Snappers in game two left the Swing five games back. Beloit (31-17) salvaged a series split with the game two victory.

The first game was a scoreless tie before Jared Schweitzer sparked the Swing in the fourth. The 23-year-old out of Kansas drew a walk to lead off the inning, fouling off four consecutive full-count pitches before taking the free pass on the 10th pitch of the sequence.

He was at third base later in the inning when Mark Shorey took ball three to load up the count, but the catcher’s throw back to the mound was low and eluded the pitcher. Schweitzer alertly broke for home, capitalizing on the Snappers’ miscue to score the game’s lone run.

Beloit threatened to even things up in the sixth, but the Swing were up to the task. Danny Valencia blasted a towering fly ball to left that looked like it would tie the game, but 19-year-old outfielder Daryl Jones raced back to the wall, timed his jump perfectly, and brought back the potential home run to preserve the 1-0 lead. Later in the frame there were two men aboard and just one out, but Kyle Mura struck out the last two batters of the inning to keep the Snappers off the scoreboard.

Kenny Maiques (10) came on to close the door in the seventh and fired off a 1-2-3 inning for his first save since May 12. That gave the win to Mura (2-0), who stranded four runners on base over 1.2 scoreless frames of relief. Starter Brad Furnish also pitched well, tossing 4.1 shutout innings while fanning five and allowing three hits.

Beloit 4 at Quad Cities 0

Record 31-17

W: D. Vais (4-1, 3.51); L: K. Sadlowski (0-2, 4.76)
HR: None.

From swingbaseball.com: Quad Cities headed into game two eager for the doubleheader sweep, but Beloit squashed those thoughts with a big inning in the top of the sixth.

With the game still in a scoreless tie, the Snappers had men at the corners with one away when Johnny Woodard lined a run-scoring single to right. Joe Benson followed with a single of his own that plated another run, but the throw to third bounced off Woodard’s body and into the seats, bringing a third run home. Chris Parmelee capped the rally with a double to left-center that gave Beloit the 4-0 advantage.

That was plenty for the Snappers’ pitching staff, who retired 21 of the 22 batters they faced. Danny Vais (4-1) twirled five scoreless frames to pick up the win, striking out three while allowing a one-out single to Schweitzer in the fourth inning and nothing more. Rob Delaney finished the job with two perfect innings.

Tyler Herron tossed five strong innings for the Swing in game two, fanning three while allowing three hits without figuring into the decision. The loss went to Kyle Sadlowski (0-2), who gave up four runs – three earned – in two innings of work.
