Hicks, Morales recognized by Baseball America

GCL Twins outfielder Aaron Hicks leads off the list of Baseball American's top 20 GCL Prospects. This is probably not surprising has Hicks enjoyed a great season with the GCL Twins, having a chance to focus on his fielding and his batting.

The list also included Michael Almanzar (3b), Casey Kelly (SS/rhp) and Derrik Gibson (3b) for the GCL Red Sox and Jarek Cunningham (3b/ss) for the GCL Pirates in the South Division.

Former GCLer Angel Morales picked up recognition as a top Appalachian League prospect, finishing up 8th on B.A.'s list. While the E-Twins enjoyed a great deal of success on the field, Elizabethton was largely snubbed by BA in the post season honors category.

BA will announce their top Midwest League prospects on September the 23, their top Florida State League prospects on the 29th, the Eastern League list on the 30th and the International League list will post on October 3rd.

BA also announced their first and second team All-stars. The Twins prospects were shut out of both except for the inclusion of closer Rob Delany as a post season All-star pitcher. Delaney is one of five former Beloit Snappers headed to the Arizona Fall league.

Five former Snappers will be participating in the upcoming Arizona Fall League next month for the Minnesota Twins. Rob Delaney, Jeff Manship, Anthony Slama, Steve Tolleson and Danny Valencia will all be members of the Phoenix Desert Dogs along with prospects from the following teams:

- Arizona Diamondbacks
- Colorado Rockies
- Oakland Athletics
- Toronto Blue Jays

The Arizona Fall League is considered by many to be final step before entering the Major League level. Six top prospects from each Major League team are chosen to compile six different teams split into two divisions. Each team will be made up of 30 players, totaling 180 with the league schedule running from October 7th to November 20th.

Rob Delaney was a member of the 2007 Beloit Snappers where he went 1-0 with a 0.77 ERA in 36 games. His 28 saves broke the all-time record for the Snappers and were good enough for second in the Midwest League, even after he was promoted to Fort Myers half way through the season. Delaney signed with the Twins as a non-drafted free agent on June 19, 2006.

Jeff Manship was a Snapper during the beginning of the '07 season. Manship went 7-1 with a 1.51 ERA in 13 starts, while compiling 77 strikeouts in 77.2 innings of work. He was a 14th round pick by the Twins in the 2006 First-Year Player draft.

Anthony Slama was another member of the '07 Snappers, taking over the closer role after Rob Delaney's promotion to Fort Myers. In 21 games for the Snappers, Slama saved 10 while posting a 1.48 ERA. Anthony also had an impressive 39 strikeouts in 24.1 innings pitched. Slama was a 39th round pick by the Twins in the 2006 First-Year Player draft.

Steve Tolleson played in Beloit for parts of the 2005 and '06 seasons, totaling 78 games. During the '06 campaign, Steve hit .287 with 49 hits, 23 runs and 16 RBIs. Tolleson was the Twins' 5th round pick in the 2005 First-Year Player draft.

Danny Valencia played for the Snappers during the 2007 season, hitting .302 with 15 doubles, 11 home runs and 35 RBIs. Valencia also sported a .374 on-base percentage in 66 games. Danny was drafted by the Twins' in the 19th of the 2006 First-Year Player draft.

Delaney, Manship, Tolleson and Valencia all spent the majority of the 2008 season with the Twins' Double-A Affiliate New Britain Rock Cats, while Slama spent the entire season with the High-A Affiliate Fort Myers Miracle.

Joining the five for the AzFL are Dustin Martin, who was acquired in a 2007 trade with the Mets and pitcher Tim Lahey, a catcher converted to pitcher. Neither wore a Snappers uniform during their Twins minor league careers.

Dan Osterbrock gave up 9 hits, but no runs and struck out 11 over 7 inning to lead the Elizabethton Twins in a blanking of the Pulaski Mariners, 7-0. With the win, the Twins sweep the best of three series, 2-game to none, to repeat as Appalachian League Champions.

A Nick Romero single and a Jon Waltenbury home run gave the E-Twins a lead in the bottom of the first. Waltenbury would crank a fly ball over the right center field wall. It was his first home run of the playoffs, but the former GCL slugger had 10 in regular season play.

Angel Morales and Jeff Lanning both singled to lead off the bottom of the second. Danny Rams took a walk to load the bags. James Beresford would go down on strikes, but Dominic De La Osa sent a grounder out to left, scoring two. Romero would single to drive in Rams. Pulaski would call for a pitching change at that point, bringing in Stephen Benney to replace starter Brooks Mohr. Waltenbury's grounder to center drove in De La Osa before Evan Bigley would ground into a double play, ending the inning.

Pulaski would keep the E-Twins off the board for the next five innings. For Pulaski, their best scoring chance came in the top of the sixth when Juan Fuentes singled with one out on the board. Kris Sanchez would fly out, but Jose Rivero took a double off Osterbrock, putting men at second and third. Osterbrock would take Deybis Benitez down on strikes however, to keep the Mariners off the board.

Thom Wright would work the 8th inning, allowing a single to Mario Martinez, then advancing him on a wild pitch. Fuentes would go down on strikes however, and Sanchez and Rivero both ground out to send the E-Twins up to bat for what would prove to be the final time.

Phillip Roy would be on the mound for the Mariners, and he walked Morales and Jeff Lanning to start off. Rams would strike out, but Beresford drew a walk to load the bags. Pulaski quickly got Blake Nation out of the bullpen, but unleashed a wild pitch, scoring Morales. He'd then hit De La Osa with a pitch before getting Romero to ground into a double play, ending the inning.

Steve Blevins, a call up for the 2008 version of the GCL Twins would make short work of the next three batters in the Mariner's line up to give the E-Twins the Championship.

Waltenbury would finish the game 3-for-3 with a walk, a run and 3 RBIs. Romero would go 2-for-5 in the contest with a run and a run scored. De La Osa, Morales, and Lanning were all 1-for-3 at the plate, De La Osa with a run and 2 RBIs, Morales with a walk and a pair of runs, and Lanning with a walk and a run.

Mike Harrington, 1-for-4 at the plate did not factor into the scoring, becoming the one hit wonder of the game, while Rams, who was 0-for-3 with a walk, also chipped in with a run.

THE YEAR IN REVIEW: The Twins finished the year with the circuit's best record at 41-25 and completed a two-game sweep of Pulaski to claim the league championship for the second straight season and third time in the last four years.

WHAT WENT RIGHT: Where to begin? 1B Jonathan Waltenbury led the league in total bases and extra-base hits with 37. OFs Angel Morales and Evan Bigley led the league in homers with 15 and 14, respectively, and both hit over .300. As a team, the Twins led the league with a .274 average, 88 home runs, 142 doubles and 418 runs. On the mound, Elizabethton had three of the top four starters in innings, and LHP Daniel Osterbrock took home Pitcher of the Year honors after going 7-2 with a 3.00 ERA and a league-leading 104 strikeouts. Osterbrock pitched the Twins to the title with seven shutout innings in Game 2 against Pulaski, a 7-0 win.

WHAT WENT WRONG: Elizabethton couldn't match last season's 50-18 record, possibly because the Twins finished eighth in the league in team ERA at 4.37. Plus, they stole a league-worst 24 bases while being caught 19 times.

DYNASTY: The Twins rolled to their second consecutive title and third in four years behind their slugging offense and solid pitching. Elizabethton jumped to a 4-0 lead through two innings in Game 1 and held on for a 7-4 win in Pulaski. The Twins got off to an even better start in Game 2, rocking Mariners starter Brooks Mohr for six runs in 1 1/3 innings en route to a 7-0 clincher.

The GCL PHillies would take their series against the Nationals to 3-games before going on to win the GCL Title (MiLB.com. Congratulations to the GCL Phillies.

According to an article in the Sarasota Herald-Tribune the Cincinnati Reds have not committed to playing in either the FSL or the GCL for the 2009 season. 2009 will be their last year in Ed Smith Stadium, they will be moving to Goodyear, Arizona, after the taxpayers of Sarasota County voted down funding to renovate their 20-year old Spring Training facilities. That throws in a new glitch into the already complicated FSL Divisional problem, which started when the Tampa Bay Devil Rays partnered with Ripken baseball to purchase the former FSL Dodgers franchise, moving it to Port Charlotte for the 2009 season. It is unclear if Port Charlotte will be participating in the GCL, as they use two short season teams, but they would certainly be a nice edition to the league as the trip to Charlotte County is substantially shorter than the one to Sarasota.

The Fort Myers Miracle begin their quest for a FSL Title Tuesday night in Dunedin against the Blue Jays. They are the last of the Twins affiliated teams still playing as Beloit, AA New Britain and AAA Rochester all ended their seasons on Monday.

E-Twins claim game one, DSL Twins done

Elizabethton 7 at Pulaski 4

The Elizabethton Twins took early lead, held off a mid-game rally and went on to defeat the Pulaski Mariners, 7-4 in game one of the best-of-five Appalachian League Championship series.

Reliever Danny Rondon would claim the win for the E-Twins, while Steve Blevins, a 2008 promotion to the E-Twins from the GCL, handled the save.

With two outs on the board in the first inning, Jon Waltenbury would take a walk. Evan Bigley would then double him in to put the Twins on the board.

They extended their lead in the top of the second with Angel Morales singling his way onto base. Jeff Lanning would fly out, but James Beresford knocked a ground ball single to left and Dominic De La Osa took a walk to load the bags. Nick Romero then hit a ground rule double to center to plate Morales and Beresford. Waltenbury sacrificing in De La Osa to give the Twins a 4-0 lead.

Brad Tippett left the game after only two outs in the first with an injured elbow, with Curtis Leavitt replacing him on he mound. The California hurler found trouble in the bottom of the fourth, allowing back-to-back doubles to Kris Sanchez and Jose Rivero, getting the Mariners on the board. Guy Welsh took a walk. A sac-bunt by George Soto advanced the runners, and a ground out by Jacob Shaffer plated Rivero to cut the Twins lead in half.

Waltenbury singled in the top of the 5th, and Bigley reached on a force attempt in which Soto at second misplayed the ball. Mike Harrington then doubled to drive in Walt for an insurance run.

They'd need it, as Gabriel Noriega walked to start the the bottom of the fifth. Mario Martinez singled, which prompted Ray Smith to call for a pitching change getting Leavitt off the hill and putting Rondon in. The GCL Twins ace closer from 2007 would allow a double to Juan Fuentes which scored Noriega and Martinez, making it 5-4 Twins. He'd get Kris Sanchez to fly out however and Rivero and Welsh to strike out, ending the inning.

Lanning would get plunked by a pitch, with Baby Bearcat singling him to second. De La Osa would also get plunked, loading the bags. Romero would sacrifice in Lanning, but Waltenbury would pop out and Bigley line out, retiring the side.

Leavitt would get charged with 4 runs on four hits and a pair of walks while striking out 4 over 3.1 innings. Rondon would give up 2 hits and fan 3 over the next 2 innings with Jarred Eacott coming in for the seventh and eighth, allowing one walk and fanning three.

Bigley would homer in the top of the 9th, a solo shot, for the Twins 7th run of the night. Blevins would strike out Noriega and Martinez in the bottom half of the final set, with Fuentes claiming a single. Sanchez hit into a force out however, ending the contest.

Beresford was 2-for-4 with a run, and Bigley, the game's yard bird, was 2-for-5 with a double, a run and two RBIs. Walt finished up 1-for-3 with a pair of runs and 1 RBI. Lanning was also 1-for-3 with a run.

Romero, Harrington, and Morales were all 1-for-4, Romero with a double and 3 RBIs, Harrington with a double and a run scored, and Morales with a run.

The two teams rematch tonight at Joe O'Brien Stadium for game two of the series. The first pitch is due out at 7:00 P.M.

DSL Mariners 1 at DSL Twins 0

The DSL Mariners blanked the DSL Twins at Baseball City Thursday, ending the Twins bid for a DSL Championship.

Victor Ozuna took a triple off reliever Eddy Santana and scored on a missed catch by Manuel Soliman at 3rd base.

The D-Twins actually out hit the Mariners, but could not convert on their chances. Yorby Martinez would double in the bottom of the fifth, and after Soliman went down on strikes, try to go home on a Wilfy Gil single to left. He was taken out at the plate however, as Angel Zapata riffled the ball in to Mariners' catcher Hassiel Jimenez, who got the tag on Martinez.

Danny Santana would single in the bottom of the sixth, then steal 2nd. He'd get caught trying to take 3rd however.

Six different Twins had hits, with Carlos Vasquez, Martinez and Gil going 1-for-3 at the plate; Vasquez with a walk, and Martinez with a double. Santana, Jean Carlos Mercedes and Jairo Rodriguez finished up 1-for-4, all one-hit wonders.

Jhonatan Arias is already schedule to make an appearance State-side at Fall Instructional League, but it will certainly be interesting to see which of this talented group of young men will join the 2009 GCL Squad.

The DSL Angels will face the DSL Nationals1 in the Semi-final round, while the DSL Mariners take on the DSL Giants. Thanks to the DSL Twins for all their hard work this season, and a big thanks ti Director of Latin American Operations Jose Marzan for answering countless questions as we explored the Latin American Leagues in depth for the first time, here at Rookie Whites.

E-Twins clinch, Apply League All-Star list released

Elizabethton 12 at Danville 3

The Elizabethton Twins clinched their playoff berth Friday night with a resounding defeat of the Danville Braves.

Chris Shehan singled off Elizabethton starter Thom Wright in the bottom of the 2nd, then stole 2nd. A wild pitch by Wright moved Shehan to 3rd and Mike Elkerson doubled him in to give the Braves an early one run lead.

Nathan Hanson reached on a fielding error in the top of the 3rd. James Beresford laid down a sac-bunt, but a throwing error by Braves pitcher Paul Clemens sent Hanson to 3rd and Beresford to 1st. Dominic De La Osa singled, loading the bases. Nick Romero's follow up single scored Hanson. Jon Waltenbury sacrificed Beresford in, and one out later, a wild pitch by Clemens allowed De La Osa to score. Romero would be left stranded when Michael Harrington was called out on strikes.

Shehan again singled in the bottom of the sixth then stole 2nd base. With 2 outs on the board, Mike Elkerson singled. Elizabethton Field manager Ray Smith called for a pitching change, getting Steve Blevins onto the mound to replace Wright. Jesus Sucre singled off Blevins to plate Shehan, but the former GCL Twin then struck out L. V. Ware, leaving two men stranded.

Hanson took a walk in the top of the 7th with one out on the board. The Braves would bring Brandon Beachy in to replace Clemens, and Beresford greeted the new hurler with a single. De La Osa drew a walk. and a wild pitch by Beachy moved the pair. Romero sacrificing in Beresford to make it 4-2 Twins.

Evan Bigly would reach on a fielding error by Ware in the top of the 8th. Harrintong would single and a fielding error by Camilo Parra advanced the runners. Alex Soto singled out to left to drive in Bigley, and a wild pitch by Beachy put Harrington over the plate. Angel Morales would fly out to right and Hanson would be hit by a pitch before the Braves replaced Beachy with Derick Himpsi, who got Beresford to ground into a double play to retire the Twins.

Shehan would take a triple of Blevins in the bottom of the 8ths and come home on Parra's ground out. Blevins got Shayne Moody to ground out as well then struck out Mike Elkerson to send the Twins up to bat again.

With a 7-3 lead, De La Osa and Romero would take back-to-back walks to start the ninth. Waltenbury ground into a force out, that put runners at the corners. Evan Bigley reached on a fielder's choice, but the Braves could not make the play at the plate, and De La Osa scored. Harrington doubled in the the remaining runners to make it 10-3 Twins. Soto took a walk, and wild pitch by Himpsi put Harrington on 3rd. Morales then walked the bases full. Hanson reached on a force attempt that scored Harrington. De La Osa, batting around the order, took a walk as well to force in Soto to make the game 12-3. The Braves would have to call in pitcher Rico Reid to get Romero to pop out, getting them out of the bases loaded jam.

Romero was 2-for-4 at the plate with a walk and a pair of RBIs. Harrington was 2-for-5 with a double, two runs and two RBIs. De La Osa was 1-for-3 with 3 walks, a pair of runs and a run scored. Soto and Beresford were 1-for-4 each; Soto with a walk, a run and a run scored, a Beresford with a pair of runs.

The win was Wright's fourth, Blevins picked up the save, his first since his promotion from the GCL Twins.

In defeating the Braves, the Twins also allowed Pulaski to clinch, so the 2008 Appalachian League playoff match is now set.

Elizabethton faces Danville one more time on Saturday night with a 7:00 PM start, then hosts Princeton for a three game homestand to complete their regular season.

The Elizabethton Twins dominated the Appalachian League's All-Star Team list, filling eight selections. Dan Osterbrock was named Pitcher of the Year. The University of Cincinnati product leads the league with 100 strikeouts and 73 innings pitched and ranks second with seven wins. The 21-year-old southpaw is 7-2 with a 3.08 ERA in a dozen starts, was named Pitcher of the Week on July 7 and has held opponents to a .239 batting average.

Osterbrock struck out 12 batters in consecutive starts on July 24-30. He's fanned at least 10 in five of his last seven starts, allowing 15 earned runs in that span.

GCL alumni Mark Hamburger was named Reliever of the Year; outfielders Evan Bigley and Angel Morales were named to the list as was first baseman Jon Waltenbury in the designed hitter role. Brad Tippett was also added to the All-star pitchers' list.

Elizabethton's Ryan Hedwell was named trainer of the year by the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society.

Bigley ranks second in the league with 14 homers and 46 RBIs. He hit .394 in June and cemented his spot on the All-Star roster last week when he hit two homers and drove in five runs against Princeton.

Tippett opened eyes last season for the Twins with an 0.93 ERA. The Australian was 8-3 with a 2.63 ERA in 13 starts this season. Hamburger, a Minnesota native, has 13 saves and 39 strikeouts over 35 2/3 innings.

Morales was the Twins' third-round pick in 2007 and hit .313 in his second Minor League season with Elizabethton. The center fielder, who spent his first professional season with the GCL Twins, leads the Appy League with 15 homers to go with 28 RBIs.

Waltenbury, a 2006 seventh-rounder and member of the 2007 GCL Twins squad, is hitting .331 with 10 homers and 43 RBIs. (TriCities Sports)

DSL Twins 5 at DSL White Sox 1

The DSL Twins defeated the DSL White Sox while the DSL Indians did the Twins a favor, blanking the DSL Yankees2 to leave the Twins alone atop the DSL Boca Chica North Division.

The Twins wasted no time getting on the board as Wilfy Gil reached on a fielding error and made his way to 3rd base. Danny Santana sacrificed him in to put the Twins on the board. A fielding error by Lara would prove costly however, as Santana, who would have been safe at first tried to make it to second, but was take out at the base. Oswaldo Arcia doubled before Jairo Perez reached on a fielding error, moving Arcia to 3rd. Jairo Rodriguez singled Arcia home. A passed ball by Daniel Yepez moved the two runners. Eliel Sierra hit into a ground out, allowing Perez to score and giving the Twins a 3-0 lead.

The Sox took out back in the bottom of the inning with Jeffer Patinod doubling, then coming home on a Angel Ferreiras single.

The Twins answered back in the top of the 2nd however, as Yorby Martinez drew a walk to lead off. Yancarlo Franco would ground into a force out, but Gil was then hit by a pitch, moving Franco to 3nd. Sanatana singled, but Franco would be taken down at home leaving runners on 2nd and 3rd. Arcia singled to bring in Gil. Santana would try to come home as well, but was taken down at the plate, sending the Sox up to bat again.

No worries though. Cesar Ciurcina would hold the White Sox to only 4 hits over five innings while striking out six. Renzi Reveroi took over for the next two allowing 2 hits and walk and striking out 4. Jhonny Garcia struck out 2 in the 8th inning.

Ronny Juma would be on the mound for the Twins in the top of the 9th and would take Manuel Soliman and Martinez out on strikes before walking Franco, who then stole 2nd. Gil then tripled him in for an extra marker before Santana popped out, putting the Twins defensive unit back into play.

Edison Alvarez used three quick outs to end the game.

If the Twins can defeat the Indians on Saturday at Baseball City, or if both the Twins and the Yankees2 drop their final games, the Twins, who have won their last six, will clinch their playoff berth.

Bromberg shines as Beloit shuts down Kane County

David Bromberg has been nothing if inconsistent this season. After getting shelled in his last outing, he turned around Friday night at Kane County to shut the Cougars out for the first five innings.

Brombert scattered 5 hits and 4 walks, while striking out eight for his seventh win of the season. Mike Allen worked the next 1.2 innings before giving way to Blake Martin.

The Snappers couldn't even find a hit through the first three innings, and after Ben Revere flew out, the fourth looked it might be more of the same. But Estarlin De Los Santos singled his way onto base. Yangervis Solarte flew out before Rene Leveret singled out to right to drive in De Lo, giving the Snappers an early lead.

With two outs on the board in the top of the fifth, Jeanfred Brito singled then stole 2nd. Chris Cates laced a double out to right to drive in Brito.

It would stay that way until the 8th inning, when things got interesting. Ben Revere reached on a fielding error, then stole 2nd base. De Lo's ground out moved him to 3rd. Jamie Richmond would then intentionally walk Yangervis Solare and Leveret would get plunked with a pitch to load up the bags. This also brought a pitching change as Brad Hertzler took over on the hill for the Cougars. MarK Dolenc's line drive plated the first two runners and moved Leverett to 2nd. He'd go to 3rd on a throwing error by Hertzler. A balk would then put Leveret over the plate and advance Dolenc to 2nd. Ramon Santana and Alan de San Miguel would both go down on strikes however, giving Kane County a turn at the plate.

With one out on the board, D.J. Hollingswoth singled as did Shane Keough. Adam Klein would go down on the strikes before Justin Frash's single plated Hollingsworth. A ground ball to right by Larry Cobb scored Keough to make it 5-2 Beloit.

Cates would walk, move to 2nd on a Revere ground out and score on De Lo's line drive single to finish off the scoring.

De Lo finished up 3-for-5 at the plate with a run and a rune scored. Leveret was 2-for-3 with the same. Dolenc, Dirty and Brito were all 1-for-4, Brito with a run, Dolenc with a pair of RBIs, while Cates finished up 1-for-3 with a walk, a double, a run and a run scored.

Revere, 0-for-5 at the plate, and Solartes, 0-for-4 with a walk, each had a run in the contest.

The Snappers now return to Pohlman field to host the Peoria Chief's on 80's night, with Fireworks.

Burlington 3 at Elizabethton 11

Elizabethton Twins starter Brad Tippett limited the Burlington Royals to only one run, earned, scattering 4 hits over seven innings while striking out five. Meanwhile E-Twins off offense showed off some impressive fire power, knocking out 11 runs on 13 hits in route to a blow out at Joe O'Brien Stadium.

Dominic De La Osa singled and moved to second on a wild pitch by Royals starter Sam Runion. Nick Romero's ground out got him to 3rd and he'd score on a Jon Waltenbury ground out. Evan Bigley and Michael Harrington then hit back-to-back doubles to put another run on the board, and Jeff Lanning singled in Harrington to make it 3-0 Twins.

Julio Aparicio singled in the top of the 2nd inning and Diego Cruz doubled him in for the Royals one run off Tippett. A wild pitch would put Cruz at 3rd, but Jason Morales went down swinging and Miguel Moctezuma ground out, stranding the man on base.

With two outs on the board in the bottom of the second, De La Osa singled and advanced to 2nd on a throwing error by Burlington's Morales at 3rd base. Romero then singled De La Osa in, making it 4-1 Twins.

Lanning would single in the bottom of the 3rd while the Twins Morales, Angel, knocked his 11th home run of the season over the right Center field wall adding a pair more to the tally.

Jacob Rodriguez replaced Runion in the bottom of the fourth and sat the next three Twins batters down. The Twins would not tally again until the bottom of the 7th when Edwin Mieles replaced Rodriguez on the hill. He'd walk De La Osa before giving up a home run to Romero. Nick's sixth professional home run went over the center field wall to make it 8-1 Twins.

Danny Berlind's struggles continued as he replaced Tippett in the top of the 8th. He'd walk Jorge Gutierrez and Hilton Richardson before allowing a fly ball single to Angel Franco that plated Gutierrez. Allen Caldwell would sacrifice in Richardson. Josh Vittek took a walk before Danny Rondon replaced Berlind. There is something seriously wrong with Mr. Berlind right now. I'm certain the Twins have looked into injuries, but it seems to me that he needs to be shut down for the remainder of the season. Rondon would take Aparicio out on strikes to retire the side.

Nathan Hanson greeted Victor Jorge with a line drive single and James Beresford followed it up with a single of his own. De La Osa would fly out, advancing Hanson to 3rd, and Romero sacrificed him in. A passed ball by Moctezuma moved Beresford to 2nd before Waltenbury took a walk. Evan Bigley then doubled to drive in the pair for the 10th and 11th Twins runs.

Rondon would pitch the ninth to finish off the game. Tippett improved to 7-2 on the season with the win.

Lanning was 2-for-3 with a run and a run batted in, De La Osa and Romero were both 2-for-4, De La Osa with a walk and 3 runs, Romero with a run and 4 RBIs. Bigley would finish up 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles, a run and 2 RBIs. Waltenbury, Harrington, Morales, Hanson and Beresford were all 1-for-4 with a run each, Walt with a walk and a RBI, Harrington with the same, plus a double, and Morales with a pair of RBIs.

The two teams rematch Saturday at 7:00 PM.

Beloit, E-Twins, DSL Twins all victorious

Beloit 5 at Kane County 3

Mike McCardell worked 8 innings allowing 3 runs, 2 earned, while scattering five hits and a walk and fanning 7 to help lead the Snappers to a 5-3 win over the Kane County Cougars. Estarlin De Los Santos lead the attack, going 3-for-3 at the plate with a walk and a pair of runs.

Justin Frash singled and Larry Cobb went yard, his 11th home run of the 2008 season, in the bottom of the 3rd for Kane County.

The Snappers answered back in the top of the 4th with De Lo leading off with a single then stealing 2nd. Following a fly out to Paul Kelly, Rene Leveret homered, his 2nd for the Snappers, over the center field wall to tie up the game.

Matt Ray singled but was taken out on D.J.Hollingsworth's force out in the bottom of the 5th. Greg Yersich would attempt to pick off Hollingsworth, but over threw the base, allowing Hollingsworth to score for the unearned run. That put the Cougars on top again and it would stay that way until the top of the 8th.

Justin Friend came to replace Scott Deal and Yersich hit a line drive single to left. He'd be replaced by Jeanfred Brito as a pinch runner, and Brito would move to 2nd on Yangervis Solarte's sac bunt. Andrew Schmiesing ground out, but a wild pitch by Friend let Brito come home to tie up the contest. Ben Revere singled and stole 2nd and De Lo took a walk. A passed ball by Kane County's Petey Paramore advanced the runners. Kelly then walked to load the bags. Leveret's line drive to right scored Revere and De Lo before Mark Dolenc was taken out on strikes.

Leveret finish off 2-for-4 with a run and 4 RBIs. Revere, Ramon Santana and Schmiesing were each 1-for-4, Revere with a run, Santana with a double. Yerisch was 1-for-3, with a single.

Santos Arias worked the final inning to pick up his second save of the season, while McCardell improves to 8-3 on the year.

The two teams rematch on Friday, August 8 for a 6:30 PM start. Jamie Richmond (7-8, 4.52) gets the start for Kane County against the Snappers' David Bromberg (6-9, 5.25).

Bristol 1 at Elizabethton 3

Dominic De La Osa doubled in Angel Morales and Nathan Hanson in the bottom of the 7th inning, giving the Elizabethton Twins a win in a pitcher's duel between Bobby Lanigan and Brisol's Steve Upchurch.

Lanigan would work 8 innings scattering 4 hits and a walk while fanning five for the Twins. Upchurch allowed only one hit and 3 walks over the first five inning while fanning five before giving way to Shane Buriff.

Buriff would allow a home run to Michael Harrington in the bottom of the six. The 8th yard ball of Harrington's professional career went over the right field wall. Buriff would also give up the two runs in the seventh.

Jorge Castillo doubled in the top of the 7th inning, moved to 3rd on a Jorge Vargas sac bunt and came home on Kevin Dubler's single for Bristol's lone run.

Mark Harmburger worked one inning of relief for his ninth save of the of year.

With the win, the E-Twins maintain a 2.5 game lead over Bristol in the Appalachian League west division. They start a three game series against the Burlington Royals at Joe O'Brien Stadium Friday, with the first pitch due out at 7:00 PM.

DSL Twins 17 at DSL Rockies 4

I double there was any Rocky Mountain air for the balls to soar on Thursday, but the DSL Twins pounded out 17 runs on 17 hits, 6 walks and 7 Rockies errors to wallop the Colorado farm team 17-4.

Jairo Perez and Lesther Galvan were both 3-for-4 in the contest, Perez with a double, 4 runs and 1 runs scored, and Galvan with a pair of walks, a pair of runs and a RBI. Felix Caro was 4-for-6 at the plate with a double and a home run, two runs and 4 RBIs.

Caro's home run, in the fourth inning, brought in two for the DSL Twins.

Eliel Sierra finished up 2-for 3 with a walk, a pair of doubles, 3 runs and 1 RBI. Randy Pina was 2-for-5 at the plate with a walk, a run, and a RBI.

Oswaldo Arcia and Yorby Martinez finished up 1-for-5 each, Martinez with 1 run, Arcia with two. Each had a walk and a RBI as well. Wilfy Gil was 1-for-4 with a pair of runs.

Twins defeat Red Sox, cling to first place

Jakub Hajtmar went 5-for-6 at the plate with a pair of runs while Danny Ortiz had a pair of runs and a pair of runs batted in to lead the GCL Twins to a 9-3 blow out over the Boston Red Sox at City of Palms Complex on Wednesday.

The Twins take Thursday off and return home Friday to face the GCL Pirates.

Aaron Hicks lead off in the top of the first with a walk, then he stole 2nd. Hajtmar's single, combined with a fielding error by Bryan Peterson drove in Hicks to give the Twins first blood. Hajtmar would move to 2nd on a wild pitch by Red Sox starter Pedro Perez, but fly outs by Ortiz and Michael Gonzalez and a line out by Andres Diaz stranded the Twins Czech fielder.

Wilfred Pichardo singled then stole 2nd. A fielding error by Tyler Ladendorf send Pichardo to 3rd and allowed Derrik Gibson to reach. Casey Kelly sacrificed in Pichardo. Gibson would steal 2nd, then score on Peterson's single to left, putting the Red Sox on top.

Peter Ruiz would replace Perez for the top of the fifth, and Hajtmar singled off the reliever. Ortiz's ground ball to right put Hajtmar on 3rd. Gonzales would ground into a double play that drove in Hajtmar, tying up the game. Diaz would double, but Ladendorf flew out to end the contest.

Gibson tripled off starter Angelo Sanchez and Kelly singled him in to put the Red Sox up by one again.

However, the Twins found Armando Zerpa to their liking with Hajtmar singling off the new reliever. Ortiz would hit into a force out, and Gonzales would be hit by a pitch, putting two men on. Diaz then ground into a force out that would have been a double play, but Tyler Yockey at first missed the catch, allowing Diaz to reach. Ortiz would score on the play, to even up the game again. Diaz stole 2nd, and Ladendorf walked, but Josmil Pinto hit into a force out to end the send the Sox up to the plate.

Andrei Lovanov replaced Sanchez in the bottom of the 7th. Sanchez would be charged for 3 runs, only 2 earned, on 6 hits while fanning three over 6 innings. Lovanov would work the next two, allowing only 1 hit.

Juan Sanchez went yard in the top of the 8th, and following a fly out to Jon Goncalves, Hicks took a walk. Hajtmar singled and Ortiz then tripled the two runners in. Dustin Mercadante replaced Zerpa at that point for the Red Sox, but a wild pitch by the new reliever allowed Ortiz to score before Gonzales and Diaz hit into ground outs to retire the side.

Michael Lennox came out to the mound for the top of the ninth for the Red Sox and after getting Ladendorf to ground out, watched Pinto put his first home run of the season over the left field fence. Sanchez then followed suit, putting his second of the game over the same left field fence to top the Twins out at 9 runs.

Kelvin Mota would go three up, three down in the bottom of the 9th to end the contest and take away any hope of a Red Sox rally.

Sanchez finished up 2-for-5 at the plate with a pair of runs and a pair of runs batted in courtesy of the home runs. Pinto was 3-for-4 with a walk a run and a RBI. Goncalves would go 1-for-4 with a walk, while Diaz was 1-for-5 with a double.

The Twins remain in first place in the South Division, half a game ahead of the GCL Pirates. They are tied with the GCL Phillies for the overall spot in the GCL. The top team in the league gets a buy in the first round of the playoffs with the other two divisional winners playing a one-game elimination contest to determine who will go do the Championship round.

Former GCL starter Alex Curry suffered his 2nd loss in the Appalachian League as the Elizabethton Twins fell 13-5 to the Bristol White Sox. Angel Morales hit a single shot home run in the second inning, his 10th of the season for the E-Twins, who committed 4 errors in the game, leading to 3 unearned runs (Box/Log).

Pedro Guerra limited the DSL Reds to only 2 runs, both unearned, on 4 hits while fanning 7 over seven innings in route to his 7th win for the DSL Twins. Manuel Soliman was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double a run and a RBI, while 1st baseman Jairo Perez had a pair of runs. Edison Alverez picked up his 12 save of the season for the DSL Twins who are in 3rd place in the 10-team North Division, 3.5 games behind the division leading DSL White Sox1 (Box/Log).

Twins down Reds, 6-2

The two big guys on the team, Andres Diaz and Mike Gonzales, each clobbered their 3rd home run of the year to help lead the Twins to 6-2 pasting of the GCL Reds at the Lee County Sportsplex on Tuesday.

Diaz took a singled off Reds starter Luis Machuca with one out in the top of the second inning. A wild pitch moved Diaz to 2nd, and Reggie Williams singled advanced him to 3rd. Jae-Hyung Jang doubled to bring in Diaz and while Hyun-wook Choi's singled plated Williams. Jon Goncalves then sacrificed in J.J. to give the Twins a big lead early.

The top of the fourth saw Samuel Vasquez single for the Sarasota based squad and following a fly out to Brodie Pullen, Theodis Bowe singled as well. A wild pitch by Twins starter Miguel Munoz advanced the runners. Mauricio Pimentel singled in Vasquez while Alexis Oliveras' ground out plated Bowe to give the Reds their two runs.

Gonzalez hit a solo shot homer run over the right field fence to start out the bottom of the 6th. Diaz followed that up with a double and advanced to 3rd on Vasquez's fielding error. Williams would ground out before J.J. singled to drive in Diaz, to make it 5-2 Twins.

Diaz went yard off David Torcise, putting a fly ball over the left field fence in the bottom of the 8th to finish off the scoring.

Diaz was 3-for-4 at the plate with 3 runs, falling a double short of the cycle, with a run batted in. J.J. was also 3-for-4 but with 1 run and 2 RBIs. Goncalves was 2-for-3 with a RBI while Juan Sanchez, Gonzalez, Williams and Wook were all 1-for-4, Gonzales with the home run, Williams with a run, and Wook with a RBI to leave the one hit wonder title to Sanchez.

Munoz worked four innings, allowing 2 runs, earned on six hits and 3 walks while fanning 5. Mike Tonkin worked a scoreless fifth and Ian Mopas picked up the win, his second of the year, while fanning 4 over 2 innings. Khol Nanney picked up his 2nd save for the GCL Twins, allowing 3 hits and fanning a pair over two innings.

E-Twins take series from K-Mets

Saturday: Elizabethton 5 at Kingsport 3

Bobby Lanigan worked 7 innings allowing 3 runs on 8 hits while fanning four to help the Elizabethton Twins to a 5-3 win over the Kingsport Mets.

The Twins took a liking to Mets starter Oscar Melendez. Nick Romero singled to lead off the Twins attack in the top of the 1st. Jon Waltenbury would reach on a fielding error by Kyle Suire and Evan Bigley singled out to left to score Romero for an early Twins lead.

Danny Rams would strike out, but would make it to first anyway on a wild pitch by Melendez. After Severino ground out, moving Rams to 2nd, Angel Morales would be plunked with a pitch. James Beresford then doubled in the pair of runners to make it 3-0 Twins.

The bottom of the 3rd would see Justin Garber go yard off Lanigan over the center field fence to give the K-Mets a run.

Waltenbury would double in the top of the fifth and Evan Bigley would take a walk, before Jorge Rodriguez came in to replace Melendez. Michael Harrington singled out to right to load up the bags, but Rams and Adan Severino would both go down on strikes to strand the runners.

Rodriguez would be replaced by Guillaume Leduc in the top of the sixth, but despite a Beresford single and a Dominic De La Osa double, the Twins would still come up empty.

With one out on the board in the bottom of the sixth, Doug McNulty would triple off Lanigan. Singles to Stefan Welch, Pedro Zapata and Michael Moras would score both McNulty and Welch to tie up the game before Jean Luc Blaquiere and Justin Garber would get called out on strikes.

It would not stay tied long however as Evan Bigly put a solo-shot home run over the left field fence in the top of the seventh to put the E-Twins on top again.

In the top of the ninth, Nick Romero singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Waltenbury's fly out saw him to 3rd, and Bigley would sacrifice him in for the insurance run.

Mark Hamburger would allow a single to Moras in the bottom of the ninth, but got Blaquiere out on strikes, took Garber down on a line out and finished the game on a Rafael Fernandez fly out.

Bigley would end up 2-for-2 with a pair of walks, a run and 3 RBIs. Beresford was 2-for-3 with a double and a RBI, while Romero was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs. De La Osa (1-for-5) and Waltenbury (1-for-4) both added doubles, while Harrington chipped in a single to become the one hit wonder of the game.

Despite being O-fer at the plate, Rams (0-for-4) and Morales (0-for-3) both had runs in the contest.

Sunday: Elizabethton 14 at Kingsport 9

It was only a matter of time, but Danny Berlind was finally moved back to the bullpen. He would pick up the win Sunday in 1.1 innings of relief however, allowing only 2 hits and striking out 2 as the Elizabethton Twins won a slug fest against the Kingsport Mets.

Elizabethton opened the scoring with Nick Romero taking a single off K-Mets starter Colin McHugh. Jon Waltenbury's fly ball single moved him to 2nd and following a fly out to Evan Bigley, Jeff Lanning doubled the pair in.

Kingsport answered back however when Brad Tippett plunked Kyle Suire with a pitch. Suire would move to 2nd on Wilmer Flores line drive and score on a fielding error by Elizabethton's Dominic De La Osa at second.

Adan Severino singled in the top of the 2nd, then stole second base. Angel Morales singled, but James Beresford hit into a force out that took Morales down at second. With men at the corners, De La Osa would knock a line drive to right to plate Severnio. Romero's grounder to right drove in Beresford before Waltenbury took a walk to load the bags. Bigley singled in De La Osa, but Lanning would line out and Alex Soto ground out to strand the remaining runners.

A fielding error by Romero allowed Michael Moras to reach and Tippett would walk Gabriel Zavala. After Imbewer Alvarez was called out on strikes, Justin Garber would reach on a throwing error by Romero that scored Moras, and Rafael Fernandez singled in Zavala. Suire then put this fifth home run of the season over the right field wall to add 3 more to the K-Mets total, making the score 6-5 Kingsport after two.

The Twins tied it up in the top of the fourth. De La Osa and Romero hit back-to-back singles. After Waltenbury and Bigley went down on the strikes, Lanning's line drive plated De La Osa. That would signal a pitching change for the Mets, who sent Manuel Alvarez out to the hill to replace McHugh.

Severino would triple in the top of the 5th and Morales would get hit by a pitch. Beresford reached on a fielder's choice that took Severino out at home, saving the run. Morales would advance to 3rd on a throwing error by Moras, but would be left stranded when De La Osa popped out and Romero flew out to send the K-Mets to the plate.

Kyle Carr replaced Tippett in the bottom of the stanza and worked a quick 1-2-3 inning taking out McNulty, Welch and Rogelio Del Campo, who as brought in to replace Moras. The K-Mets pitcher was injured in a fifth inning wreck at home plate when he was run over by Severino.

Waltenbury would single to open up the top of the sixth, and moved to send on a wild pitch by Alvarez. Bigley would walk, and Lanning would single to load the bags. Following a pop out to Alex Soto, Severino doubled to bring in Walt and Bigley. Morales would go down on strikes, but a Beresford ground ball single drove in Lanning and Severino, to make it 10-6 Twins.

Zavala singled and moved to 3rd on a wild pitch by Carr. Alvarez would go down on strikes and Garber walk before Frenandez's ground out brought in Zavala. Suire would take a walk which prompted Ray Smith to walk out to the mound, removing Carr and bring in Berlind. A wild pitch by the new reliever advanced the runners, and Berlind would give up a double to bring in Garber and Suire before McNulty popped out to end the inning.

Travis Babin would allow a double to Romero in the 7th, and a Waltenbury single plated the Twins 3rd baseman to give Elizabethton an insurance run.

Welch would double in the bottom of the inning, but a fly out and a pair of strike out by Berlind left him on second with no further damage done.

Soto would single, Severino would be hit by a pitch and Morales would walk to load the bags in the top of the 8th. Beresford drew a walk to force in a run, and De La Osa would get hit by a pitch to bring in another one. Romero sacrificed in Morales, which concluded the scoring in the game.

Romero was 4-for-5 with a double a pair of runs and a pair of runs scored. Waltenbury was 3-for-5 with a walk, a pair of runs and a RBI. Severino would go 3-for-4 falling a home run shy of the cycle with 3 runs and 2 RBIs. Lanning was 3-for-6 with a double, a run and 3 RBIs. Bigley and Soto were both 1-for-5 with a run each; Morales and Beresford were 1-for-4 with a walk and a run each. Beresford had 3 RBIs to boot. Mike Harrington, coming in as a pinch hitter, went 1-for-1 to become the one hit wonder of the game.

Monday: Elizabethton 5 at Kingsport 6

The Elizabethton Twins would go into Monday night's contest looking for a sweep in the series, but home field advantage would work to Kingsport's favor in extra innings and the Twins would have to settle for a 2-1 split.

Raul Batis took the start for the K-Mets. He'd work 3 scoreless innings before Michael Harrington took a double from him. Angel Morales then put his 8th home run of the short season over the left field wall to give Elizabethton 2.

Stefan Welch would return the same in the bottom of the stanza, with his second of the year for the K-Mets going over the right field wall. Pedro Zapata would follow that up with a single, steal 2nd and then attempt to steal 3rd, but Danny Rams rifled a ball to Nat Hanson to take him down at third.

Justin Garber singled off Dan Osterbrock in the bottom of the 5th and Rafael Fernandez singled to move him to second. Kyle Suire's ground out put runners on 2nd and 3rd. Following a pop out to Wilmer Flores, Douglas McNulty reached on a throwing error by Hanson that also allowed Garber and Fernandez to score.

Kingsport would add another run each of the 7th and the 8th innings off Twins reliever Lee Martin.

With the K-Mets up by three, Evan Bigley took a walk in the top of the 9th. Harrington singled and following a Rams' strike out, Morales would go yard for the second time in the game, his 9th of the season clearing the right field wall to tie up the contest.

Steve Blevins would take over from Martin in the 10th inning and would strand Zapata after he reached on throwing error. Wilmer Flores double in the bottom of the 11th saw him taken out at 3rd on a fielder's choice.

Sadly, the E-Twins were not making much noise offensivly during this time. Romero would strike out in the 12th and Lanning and Bigley would both ground out bringing the K-Mets up to bat in the bottom half.

Blevins would get Zapata to ground out, but Jean Luc Blaquiere would go yard, his 3rd of the year going over the left field fence to make the K-Mets winners.

Harrington and Morales were both 3-for-5 with a pair of runs, Morales with 5 runs scored as well. Bigley was 2-for-5 with a walk and a run. Beresford (1-for-4), Waltenbury (1-for-5) and De La Osa (1-for-6) all chipped in singles to share the one hit wonder title.

Osterbrock would finish up allowing 3 runs, only 1 earned, on 7 hits and a walk while fanning 8 over six innings. Blevins' loss would be his second of the season, coming on 3 hits over 2.1 innings worth of work.

With a 27-18 record, the E-Twins remain n first in the West Division, 1.5 games in front of Bristol. The White Sox come in to Joe O'Brien Stadium starting Tuesday for a 3-game series. The Elizabethton Twins would come out on top during the resumption of Thursday's game which had been suspended by rain. Adan Severino and James Beresford lead the attack against the Greeneville Astros.

Brad Tippett would work just 2 innings before the game was halted. When it resumed, Curtis Leavitt took over the mound, and went on to work the next 5.2 innings. Greeneville would get on the board first, in the bottom of the fifth.

Pedro Gonzalez singled and Jose Altuve reached on a fielding error by Beresford. Ricardo Bonfante moved the pair on a sac-bunt. A second fielding error, this one by Dominic De La Osa, allowed Wilton Infante to reach and Gonzalez to score. Jay Austin would ground into a force out that scored Altuve, leading to a pair of unearned runs for the Astros.

Adan Severino doubled in the top of the sixth and Angel Morales took a walk. James Beresford's single advanced Severino to 3rd, and he'd score on De La Osa's ground out to first.

Jordan Lyles had started for the Astros and was replaced in the top of the fourth by Zach Grimmett following the suspension. After giving up the run in the sixth Grimmett would be replaces by Greeneville's Colton Pitkin in the top of the 7th. Michael Harrinton singled and moved to 2nd on Jeff Lanning's ground out. Following a fly out to Danny Rams, Severino and Morales both drew walks. Beresford would then triple the runners in to give the E-Twins a 4-2 lead.

After a brief stint on the mound by Steve Blevins, Mark Hamburger would come in to close out the game for the E-Twins. He'd get Kody Hines and Ebert Rosario to ground out before allowing a single to Gonzalez. Chris Turner would come into the game as a pinch runner for Gonzalez and move to 2nd on Altuve's single. Bonfante's line drive brought in Turner, but Wilton Infalte would fly out, ending the contest.

Severino would go 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and a pair of runs, while Beresford was 2-for-4 with a triple and 3 RBIs. Harrington had one run on a 1-for-4 showing at the plate, while Morales chipped a run on 2 walks as he finished up 0-for-2.

Elizabethton 0 at Greeneville 7

The Elizabethton Twins would find themselves blanked in the night cap however, to split the road series with the Astros, 2 games to 1.

Alex Curry would hit Carlos Mojica with a pitch in the bottom of the 3rd, and then walk Jorge De Leon. A wild pitch then advanced the pair. After Chris Turner struck out swinging, Renzo Tello would reach on James Beresford's throwing error, which also allowed Mojica and De Leon to score. Ebert Rosario would walk and Kody Hinze ground out advanced the pair of runners before Nathan Metroka ground out to end the inning.

Dionel Montas took a solo shot home run off Curry in the bottom of the 4th, and Albert Cartwright and Mojica both singled. A line drive by De Leon saw Cartwright cross the plate, while Turner's ground ball single plated Mojica. Thom Wright would come in to replace Curry, who would exit after allowing 7 runs, six earned, on 7 hits and pair of walks while fanning 2.

Wright would allow a single to Tello that advanced the pair of runners still left on base. Wright would go for a pick off on Tello, but a missed catch by Waltenbury allowed De Leon to score. Ebert Rosario would ground out, but Hinze walked to load the bags. Metroka's ground out scored Turner before Dionel Montas went down on strikes, to let the Twins have a turn at the plate.

Severino, Waltenbury, Alex Soto and Nat Hanson were all 1-for-3, Hansen with a double, while Rams would go 1-for-2 with a walk and a double.

The Twins now face the Kingsport Mets for a three game set starting Saturday at 7:05 PM.

Humber, Severino named pitcher, player of the week

International League names Philip Humber pitcher-of-the-week

2-0, 2.30 ERA, 2 G, 2 GS, 15.2 IP, 11 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 19 SO

After a particularly bad start on July 1, one that sent his ERA up to 6.00, the Twins took Philip Humber out of the Rochester rotation for the second time this season. Humber spent more than two weeks in the Rochester bullpen, putting together a scoreless outing in three of his five appearances. Entering this week, Humber -- one of the key pieces in the Johan Santana trade -- had not struck out more than six batters in a start. He had not reached the eighth inning a single time. In two starts this week, Humber accomplished both feats twice, and now has won his last three starts to improve to 7-7 on the season. Since the Triple-A All-Star Break, Humber has allowed just five runs and struck out 25 batters in 22 and 2/3 innings.

Adan Severino honored by Appalachian League

Adan Severino's transition to wood bats was a slow one, as the outfielder had grown quite fond of aluminum after a big season with the Miami Hurricanes in 2008. Entering the week, Severino's professional career was in full slump mode, as the Miami native was hitting just .154 through his first 18 games. However, with 10 hits in five games since, Severino finds his average up an even 100 points and his OPS up nearly 200 points. It's the result of three multiple-hit games, including a four-single affair on July 30. Severino also stole two bases uncontested this week, and with a pair of walks, brought his on-base percentage north of .400 for the first time.

Snappers sweep in extra innings

Great Lakes 2 at Beloit 3

A triple by Estarlin De Los Santos and a single by Yangervis Solarte combined to give the Beloit Snappers the game winning run in the bottom of the 11th and a sweep of the Great Lakes Loons at Pohlman Field on Thursday night.

Great Lakes would get on the board first, with Preston Mattingly doubling off Shooter Hunt in the third inning. Hunt would then walk Parker Dalton, and a sac-bunt by Jovanny Rosario moved the pair. Erik Kanaby reached on a fielder's choice as Juan Richardson tried to make the play at the plate, but he was charged with an interference error and Mattingly scored. Hunt would walk Andrew Lambo, before getting Edwardo Perez to fly into a double play that took Dalton out at the plate.

Greg Yersich blasted his 8th home run of the season over the right field wall for Beloit, putting them on the board in the top of the fifth. Chris Cates would follow that up with a double, but Andrew Schmiesing and Jeanfred Brito both ground out to bring Great Lakes up to bat again.

Hunt would work five innings allowing only a pair of hits while fanning 9, but he'd walk five, and unleash a wild pitch in the fifth. That nearly cost him another run. He'd walk Rosario to start the inning, and then the Loons right fielder stole 2nd. After Kanaby was taken out on strikes, Rosario moved to 3rd on Hunt's wild pitch. Lambo would reach on a fielder's choice, with Richardson throwing the ball to Yersich to take Rosario out at home.

So Hunt owed the great Snappers' defense a couple of thank yous when Mike Allen took over in the sixth.

Mark Dolenc went yard in the bottom of the 7th, putting his 3rd of the season over the left center field wall.

The Loons tied it up in the top of the 8th though with Lambo and Perez taking back-to-back singles off Mike Allen. Blake Martin took over at that point, and Alfredo Silverio laid down a lovely sac-bunt to advance his runners. Kenley Jansen's ground out served to score Lambo for the equalizing run.

That sent the game into extra innings until De Lo and Soley connected for the Snappers win.

Allen would allow 3 hits and a walk while fanning three over 2 innings. He'd be charged for Lambo's run in the 8th. Martin would be changed with the blown save although he allowed only 1 hit and a pair of walks while fanning 3 over 2.2 innings. Charles Nolte picked up the win, his fourth of the season, pitching the last 1.1 innings of the game, during which time he struck out one.

The feisty little (5'3") Cates would go 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk and a pair of doubles. Solarte and Dolenc were both 2-for-4, Dolenc with a run and a run scored courtesy of his yard ball. Yersich also had a run and a run scored for the same reason, but he was 1-for-4 at he plate as was Schmeising, who would become the game's one hit wonder. De Lo finished up 2-for-5 at the plate with a triple and a run.

With the Loons shot down, the Lansing Lugnut lug themselves into town for the next three games. Friday's contest features post game fireworks sponsored in part by Suds O'Hananhan's Irish Pub. The first pitch goes out at 7:00 PM, central time.

The contest will be played through to the regulation 9 innings and will be followed by the regularly scheduled game, which will be shortened to 7 innings.

There was no score at the time the game was suspended.

Beloit, E-Twins both win

Great Lakes 3 at Beloit 4

"Great Lakes" sounds much better than "Midland" for a team location - the Midland Loonies anyone? - but in either case, "Beloit Snappers take a win" sounds the best.

It took them 10 innings, but they did just that, defeating the Loons for a 4-3 victory.

Rene Leveret reached on a throwing error in the bottom of the 2nd and moved to 2nd on a passed ball. Mark Dolenc reached on a fielder's choice that took Leveret down at 3rd, but Juan Richardson then doubled, plating the speedy Dolenc to put the Snappers on the board.

Preston Mattingly singled and Parker Dalton walked off Snappers starter Henry Reyes. A wild pitch advanced the pair and an Erik Kanaby singled drove them both in. Kanaby would be picked off, but Francisco Lizarraga drew a walk. Andrew Lambo ground into a force out, taking Lizarraga out at 2nd. Eduard Perez drew a walk, moving Lambo to 2nd and a throwing error by Greg Yersich on a pick off attempt put the ball into the outfield and allowed Lambo to score. (Good job Greg.)

Yangervis Solarte drew a walk with 2 outs in the bottom of the fifth and moved to 2nd on a Leveret single. After a pitching change saw Rob Zimmermann replace Bryan Morris on the mound, a fielding error by Dalton allowed Dolenc to reach and Solarte to score.

Robert Blevins took over for Zimmermann in the bottom of the 8th. Yersich then made up for his earlier error by launching his 7th home run of the season over the center field wall to tie up the game.

Leveret doubled in the bottom of the 10th and would be replaced by pinch runner Allan de San Miguel. Dolenc would go down on strikes and Richardson would line out before a Yersich single drove in de San Miguel for the game winning run.

Chris Anderson picked up his second win of the season, working one inning in relief. Mike Tarsi and Santos Arias worked a pair each, scattering 3 hits and a pair of walks over four innings.

Yersich was 2-for-5 with a run and pair of RBIs. Leveret was 4-for-5, Dirty had the run for him. Solarte was 1-for-3 with a pair of walks and a run, and Richardson as 1-for-5 with a run batted in.

Game three of the series is Thursday night at Pohlman field as the Snappers look for a sweep. First pitch is due out at 7:00 PM Central Time.

Elizabethton 10 at Greenville 4

Dan Osterbrock, Evan Bigley and Danny Rams were all instrumental in Elizabethton's 10-4 victory over the Greeneville Astros Wednesday night as they opened up a 3-game set at Pioneer Park. The win, coupled with a K-Mets loss, puts the the E-Twins back on top, 2 games ahead of Kingsport.

Osterbrock surrendered the first run in the game with Ebert Rosario reaching on a fielding error by Nathan Hanson. Federico Hernandez then doubled, moving Rosario to third. An Albert Cartwright sac-fly would bring in Rosario, putting Greeneville on the board.

Astro's starter Henry Villar would hold out until the top of the 4th inning. Michael Harrington took a walk before Danny Rams went yard, blasting his 4th of the year, a line drive, over the left field wall. Angel Morales would single, but then be caught stealing and Nat Hanson would fly out. James Beresford took a walk before Dominic De La Osa and Adam Severino hit back-to-back singles to plate Beresford.

Bigley would homer in the top of the 5th, his eighth of the year finding its way over the left center field fence. Villar then found his way back to the dugout, being replaced by David Dinelli.

Jorge De Leon doubled in the bottom of the 5th and Wilton Infante singled him in, to make the score 4-2 Elizabethton.

The top of the seventh would not go well for Patrick Urckfitz, who took over for Dinelli in the bottom of the sixth. He'd give up a home run to Rams, the second of the game for the Twins slugger and his fifth of the season, which went over the right center field wall. Morales would go down on strikes before Hanson singled and Bereford reached on Rosario's throwing error. De La Osa then walked to load the bases. Sevarino singled to plate Hanson and Breseford, while Urckfitz unleashed a wild pitch to advance De La Osa and Sevarino. Jon Waltenbury sacrificed in De La Osa and a Bigley line drive single scored Severino before Harrington lined out to give the Astros a turn at the plate.

Hernandez walked and Cartwright tripled him in. A wild pitch by Osterbrock brought in Cartwright but De Leon when down on strikes while Infante would ground out. Austin singled and advanced to second on a throwing error by De La Osa, but Renzo Tello struck out to end the inning, with the Twins leading 9-4.

Joel Romero pitched the 9th for Greeneville and Andrea Lucati replaced him for the top of the 9th. De La Osa drew a walk to lead off, then one out later, stole 2nd base. Waltenbury doubled him in to give the E-Twins an even 10.

Osterbrock finished off allowing 4 runs, 3 earned on six hits and one walk while striking out 12 over seven innings. Danny Rondon worked the last two scoreless innings for Elizabethton, scattering 3 hits and a walk while fanning 2.

Game two of the three game series is Thursday night starting at 7:00 PM. It s a Thirsy Thursday for the 'Stros as well as the Andrew Johnson bobble head give away.

Snappers like Loons, win 7-5

Great Lakes 5 at Beloit 7

The Beloit Snappers found the Great Lakes Loons rather to their liking as they took a 7-5 win over the visitors at Pohlman Field Monday night in game that featured a combined 27 hits by both teams.

Steve Hirschfled took the start for the Snappers, allowing 4 runs on 9 hits and 2 walks while fanning 3 in 5.2 innings. Beloit would get to Great Lakes' Thomas Melgarejo first however, snagging pair of runs in the first inning off the Dogers' affiliate.

With a pair of outs on the board, Yangervis Solarte singled and was doubled in by Rene Leveret. A wild pitch by Melgarejo moved Leveret to 3rd and a fielding error by Eduardo Perez allowed Mark Dolenc to reach and Leveret to score before Juan Richardson ground into a force out to end the inning.

Perez would single for the Loons in the top of the second, and Jaime Ortiz doubled. Kenley Johnson's ground out served to score Perez. After a fly out to Preston Mattingly, Brandon Taylor went yard to give Great Lakes a 3-2 lead.

The Snappers tie it up in the bottom of the 2nd when Chris Cates singled, moved to second on a Andrew Schmiesing single and came home on Jeanfred Brito's grounder to center.

They would extend their league in the bottom of the 3rd with Leveret and Dolenc both singling. Richardson hit into a force out which, combined with a throwing error Mattingly allowed Leveret to score. Allan de San Miguel doubled in Richardson and Cates singled to drive in Dirty.

The next couple of innings would be quiet. In the top of the sixth, Mattingly singled with a pair of outs on the board. A wild pitch by Hirschfeld put Mattingly on second and Taylor doubled him in. Parker Dalton would walk, and Snappers field manager Nelson Prada took a walk out to the mound, calling Charles Nolte in from the Snappers bullpen.

The top of the 8th saw Kenley Jansen double off Nolte and be replaced by pinch runner Jovanny Rosario. After Mattingly went down on strikes, Taylor singled to score Rosario, helped in part by Dolenc's fielding error. Dalton would go down on strikes and Prada called for another pitching change, putting Blake Martin on the mound.

The Snappers took the run back in the bottom of the eighth, with Dolenc singling, then moving to 3rd on Richardson's ground out. Dirty singled to score Dolenc. He'd try to get to second but would be tagged out at the base.

Melgarejo worked only 3 innings for Great Lakes before giving way to Miguel Sanfler, who finished the contest. Melgarejo still took the loss however, while Hirshfeld improved to 7-3 on the season.

Solarte, Leveret, Dolenc and Dirty were all 2-for-4, Solarte with a run, Leveret with a double, a pair of runs and a run scored, Dolenc and Dirty each with a run and Dirty with a double and a pair of RBIs as well. Cates was 3-for-4 with a run and a RBI. Brito finished up 1-for-4 with a RBI, and Schmiesing was 1-for-3, as the contest's one hit wonder.

THE SEASON SO FAR: The Snappers are 17-17 in the second half and in fourth place in the Western Division.

WHO'S HOT: OF Ben Revere tied for sixth among league batting leaders last week, hitting .429 (9-for-21) with three RBIs and two runs scored in five games. In 69 games this season he's batting .399 (113-for-283) with 17 doubles, nine triples, 39 RBIs and 42 runs scored.

WHO'S NOT: LHP Michael Tarsi dropped to 4-11 with a 5.67 ERA after being tagged with a pair of losses last week. In 21 games (including 20 starts) he has allowed 84 runs (71 earned) on 151 hits (including 12 home runs) over 112 2/3 innings.

OLYMPIC GLORY: RHP Loek Van Mil left the team last week to represent his country -- the Netherlands -- in next month's Beijing Olympic Games. Van Mil (2-2, 3.22 ERA) is not expected to return to the Snappers until the last week of the season.

DID YOU KNOW: The 7-foot-1 Van Mil has struck out 42 batters while issuing 25 walks in 28 relief appearances. He was signed by the Twins as a non-drafted free agent in 2005. He and 5-foot-3 teammate Chris Cates are the tallest and shortest players in baseball.

ROSTER MOVES: RHP Shooter Hunt, the Twins' supplemental first-round pick and the 31st overall selection in the June Draft, joined the Snappers last week after going 0-0 with a 0.47 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 19 innings for the Rookie-level Elizabethton Twins. He struck out nine batters in his debut against Wisconsin on Saturday.

IF Yangervis Solarte was received from Class A Advanced Fort Myers to fill Van Mil's roster spot. In 42 games with the Miracle, he hit .259 with three home runs and 16 RBIs.

The Elizabethton Twins had Tuesday off. They return to work on Wednesday as they travel to Greeneville to face the Astros.

Wisconsin blanks Snappers; E-Twins top K-Mets

The Beloit Snappers continued to struggle at the plate, this time being shut out by the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Wisconsin starter Keith Renaud scattered four hits and a pair of walks over 6.2 innings to keep the Snappers off balance.

Daniel Carroll singled for the T-Rattlers to lead off the bottom of the first and Denny Almonte put a David Bromberg pitch over the left field wall for his seventh home run of the season, helping Wisconsin to an early 2-0 lead.

Despite going down on the strikes in the bottom of the first, Edilio Colina would make it first base on a wild pitch by Bromberg. Joe White singled, moving Colina to 3rd and Alex Liddi's ground out served to plate the runner.

The bottom of the sixth saw Denny Almonte leading off with a home run, his eighth of the season going over the left field wall. Colina singled and advanced to 3rd on a throwing error by Juan Richardson. white would go down on strikes before Liddi singled to drive in Colina. Joseph Dunigan doubled out to right to score Liddi and moved to 3rd on the throw from right field. Beloit field manager Nelson Prada took Bromberg off the mound at the point, calling Mike Tarsi from the bullpen. Juan Diaz would sacrifice in Dunigan before Tarsi allowed a double to Blake Ochoa. Maximo Mendez's single would get Ochoa to 3rd, but he'd be stranded when Carroll was taken out on strikes.

Danny Hernandez would replace Tarsi in the bottom of the 8th, and walked Liddi. Dunigan ground into a force out that took Liddi out at 2nd. Diaz then tripled to drive in Dunigan before Ochoa put his 3rd home run of the season over the left field wall to finish off the scoring.

Chris Cates, Richardson, Greg Yersich, Andrew Schmiesing and Jeanfred Brito were all 1-for-3, Cates with a walk as well. Estarlin De Los Santos was 1-for-4. No multiple hit and no extra bases. And only 1 walks.

Bromberg suffered his 8th loss of the season giving up 7 runs on 8 hits while striking out 8 over 5.1 innings.

Having rattled enough, the Snappers now get a little loony, returning to Pohlman Field to host the Great Lakes Loons for a 3-game series. First pitch is due at 7:00 PM.

Kingsport 8 at Elizabethton 9

The Elizabethton Twins were able to stop a late inning rally by the Kingsport Mets to remain n first place in the Appy League's west division.

Kingsport would get to E-Twins starter Bobby Lanigan first, when Seth Williams singled in the top of the 2nd inning. A fielding error by Danny Rams at first allowed Stefan Welch to reach and sent Williams to 3rd. Pedro Zapata's ground out served to plate Williams and a sac-fly by Doug McNulty brought in Welch.

Rafael Fernandez singled in the top of the 3rd, moved to 2nd on Kyle Suire's ground out and scored on a Charles Doyle line drive to left, making it 3-0 Kingsport.

The Twins would finally answer back though in the bottom of that inning when Dominic De La Osa was hit by a pitch. One out later, Jon Waltenbury put his 6th home run of the season over the right field wall to give Elizabethton two.

McNulty would homer in the top of the fourth, a solo-shot that cleared the center field fence.

Michael Harrington returned the favor in the bottom half of the inning, his 7th of the year going over the right field wall. Following a ground out to Evan Bigley and a strike out to Danny Rams, Angel Morales doubled and James Beresford took a walk. De La Osa reached on a force attempt to load the bags, but Romero would pop out to strand them.

Waltenbury lead off the attack in the fifth by drawing a walk. Manuel Alvarez would come into replace Collin McHugh on the mound and Alex Soto took a double off of him to bring Waltenbury home. Michael Harrington then double to score Soto, putting the E-Twins on top. Bigley launched his 7th home run of the season over the left center field wall for a pair of insurance runs. Rams would single before Jorge Rodriguez replaced Alvarez on the mound. Morales singled off the new hurler, as did Beresford, which plated Rams. De La Osa would go down on the strikes before Romero singled to drive in Morales. Having batted around the order, Waltenbury drew another walk. Soto hit into a force out this time that took Beresford out at home, saving the run. Harrington would ground out to end the inning.

With two outs in the top of the 7th, Suire walked and Doyle doubled. Wilmer Flores singled to drive in Suire and a Williams fly ball single brought in Doyle. E-Twins field manager would then bring in Steve Blevins to replace Lanigan. A throwing error by Beresford allowed Welch to reach and Flores to score before Blevins could get Zapata to ground out to bring the E-Twins up to bat again.

A walk to Fernandez and a double to Suire brought in the final Mets run.

Mark Hamburger worked the final inning for his fifth save of the season.

Rams and Morales were both 3-for-4 at the plate with a walk and a run, Morales with a double. Harrington was 2-for-5 with a double and a pair of runs and a pair of runs scored. Waltenbury was 1-for-3 with 2 walks, 2 runs and 2 RBIs, while De La Osa and Beresford were both 1-for-4, De La Osa with a run, Beresford with a walk and a run scored.

Romero, Soto and Bigley were each 1-for-5, Soto with a double a run and a RBI and Bigley with a run and two RBIs on the yarder.

The Twins take Tuesday off. They then head over to Greeneville to face the Astros on Wednesday for a 7:00 PM game.

DSL Rockies 1 at DSL Twins 4

Adrian Salcedo worked 7 innings for the DSL Twins, allowing only 1 run, earned on 7 hits and a walk while fanning four to pick up only his second win of the season as the DSL Twins downed the DSL Rockies, 4-1.

Felix Caro doubled , then came home on a Jhonatan Arias single in the bottom of the 3rd to open up the scoring for the D-Twins.

In the bottom of the sixth, Jairo Rodriguez reached on a fielders choice that saw Oswaldo Arcia taken out at home. Jean Carlos Mercedes singled to drive in Rodrigez, and Mercedes moved to 3rd on a throwing error by Miguel De Leon. A wild pitch by Rockie's starter Nelson Gonzalez allowed Mercedes to score.

Back-to-back doubles to Arcia and Jairo Perez in the bottom of the 8th, add an extra point on for the Twins, rounding out the offense.

The lone Rockie's run came in the form of Juan Crousset's fourth home run of the season in the top of the first.

Perez finished up 2-for-3 with a double while Arcia was 2-for-4 with a double and a run. Danny Santana, Arias and Mercedes were all 1-for-4, Santana with a double, Arias with a walk and Mercedes with a run. Caro was 1-for-3 with a double and a run. Rodriguez was 0-for-4 despite having a run.
