Bromberg shines as Beloit shuts down Kane County

David Bromberg has been nothing if inconsistent this season. After getting shelled in his last outing, he turned around Friday night at Kane County to shut the Cougars out for the first five innings.

Brombert scattered 5 hits and 4 walks, while striking out eight for his seventh win of the season. Mike Allen worked the next 1.2 innings before giving way to Blake Martin.

The Snappers couldn't even find a hit through the first three innings, and after Ben Revere flew out, the fourth looked it might be more of the same. But Estarlin De Los Santos singled his way onto base. Yangervis Solarte flew out before Rene Leveret singled out to right to drive in De Lo, giving the Snappers an early lead.

With two outs on the board in the top of the fifth, Jeanfred Brito singled then stole 2nd. Chris Cates laced a double out to right to drive in Brito.

It would stay that way until the 8th inning, when things got interesting. Ben Revere reached on a fielding error, then stole 2nd base. De Lo's ground out moved him to 3rd. Jamie Richmond would then intentionally walk Yangervis Solare and Leveret would get plunked with a pitch to load up the bags. This also brought a pitching change as Brad Hertzler took over on the hill for the Cougars. MarK Dolenc's line drive plated the first two runners and moved Leverett to 2nd. He'd go to 3rd on a throwing error by Hertzler. A balk would then put Leveret over the plate and advance Dolenc to 2nd. Ramon Santana and Alan de San Miguel would both go down on strikes however, giving Kane County a turn at the plate.

With one out on the board, D.J. Hollingswoth singled as did Shane Keough. Adam Klein would go down on the strikes before Justin Frash's single plated Hollingsworth. A ground ball to right by Larry Cobb scored Keough to make it 5-2 Beloit.

Cates would walk, move to 2nd on a Revere ground out and score on De Lo's line drive single to finish off the scoring.

De Lo finished up 3-for-5 at the plate with a run and a rune scored. Leveret was 2-for-3 with the same. Dolenc, Dirty and Brito were all 1-for-4, Brito with a run, Dolenc with a pair of RBIs, while Cates finished up 1-for-3 with a walk, a double, a run and a run scored.

Revere, 0-for-5 at the plate, and Solartes, 0-for-4 with a walk, each had a run in the contest.

The Snappers now return to Pohlman field to host the Peoria Chief's on 80's night, with Fireworks.

Burlington 3 at Elizabethton 11

Elizabethton Twins starter Brad Tippett limited the Burlington Royals to only one run, earned, scattering 4 hits over seven innings while striking out five. Meanwhile E-Twins off offense showed off some impressive fire power, knocking out 11 runs on 13 hits in route to a blow out at Joe O'Brien Stadium.

Dominic De La Osa singled and moved to second on a wild pitch by Royals starter Sam Runion. Nick Romero's ground out got him to 3rd and he'd score on a Jon Waltenbury ground out. Evan Bigley and Michael Harrington then hit back-to-back doubles to put another run on the board, and Jeff Lanning singled in Harrington to make it 3-0 Twins.

Julio Aparicio singled in the top of the 2nd inning and Diego Cruz doubled him in for the Royals one run off Tippett. A wild pitch would put Cruz at 3rd, but Jason Morales went down swinging and Miguel Moctezuma ground out, stranding the man on base.

With two outs on the board in the bottom of the second, De La Osa singled and advanced to 2nd on a throwing error by Burlington's Morales at 3rd base. Romero then singled De La Osa in, making it 4-1 Twins.

Lanning would single in the bottom of the 3rd while the Twins Morales, Angel, knocked his 11th home run of the season over the right Center field wall adding a pair more to the tally.

Jacob Rodriguez replaced Runion in the bottom of the fourth and sat the next three Twins batters down. The Twins would not tally again until the bottom of the 7th when Edwin Mieles replaced Rodriguez on the hill. He'd walk De La Osa before giving up a home run to Romero. Nick's sixth professional home run went over the center field wall to make it 8-1 Twins.

Danny Berlind's struggles continued as he replaced Tippett in the top of the 8th. He'd walk Jorge Gutierrez and Hilton Richardson before allowing a fly ball single to Angel Franco that plated Gutierrez. Allen Caldwell would sacrifice in Richardson. Josh Vittek took a walk before Danny Rondon replaced Berlind. There is something seriously wrong with Mr. Berlind right now. I'm certain the Twins have looked into injuries, but it seems to me that he needs to be shut down for the remainder of the season. Rondon would take Aparicio out on strikes to retire the side.

Nathan Hanson greeted Victor Jorge with a line drive single and James Beresford followed it up with a single of his own. De La Osa would fly out, advancing Hanson to 3rd, and Romero sacrificed him in. A passed ball by Moctezuma moved Beresford to 2nd before Waltenbury took a walk. Evan Bigley then doubled to drive in the pair for the 10th and 11th Twins runs.

Rondon would pitch the ninth to finish off the game. Tippett improved to 7-2 on the season with the win.

Lanning was 2-for-3 with a run and a run batted in, De La Osa and Romero were both 2-for-4, De La Osa with a walk and 3 runs, Romero with a run and 4 RBIs. Bigley would finish up 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles, a run and 2 RBIs. Waltenbury, Harrington, Morales, Hanson and Beresford were all 1-for-4 with a run each, Walt with a walk and a RBI, Harrington with the same, plus a double, and Morales with a pair of RBIs.

The two teams rematch Saturday at 7:00 PM.

Wisconsin blanks Snappers; E-Twins top K-Mets

The Beloit Snappers continued to struggle at the plate, this time being shut out by the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Wisconsin starter Keith Renaud scattered four hits and a pair of walks over 6.2 innings to keep the Snappers off balance.

Daniel Carroll singled for the T-Rattlers to lead off the bottom of the first and Denny Almonte put a David Bromberg pitch over the left field wall for his seventh home run of the season, helping Wisconsin to an early 2-0 lead.

Despite going down on the strikes in the bottom of the first, Edilio Colina would make it first base on a wild pitch by Bromberg. Joe White singled, moving Colina to 3rd and Alex Liddi's ground out served to plate the runner.

The bottom of the sixth saw Denny Almonte leading off with a home run, his eighth of the season going over the left field wall. Colina singled and advanced to 3rd on a throwing error by Juan Richardson. white would go down on strikes before Liddi singled to drive in Colina. Joseph Dunigan doubled out to right to score Liddi and moved to 3rd on the throw from right field. Beloit field manager Nelson Prada took Bromberg off the mound at the point, calling Mike Tarsi from the bullpen. Juan Diaz would sacrifice in Dunigan before Tarsi allowed a double to Blake Ochoa. Maximo Mendez's single would get Ochoa to 3rd, but he'd be stranded when Carroll was taken out on strikes.

Danny Hernandez would replace Tarsi in the bottom of the 8th, and walked Liddi. Dunigan ground into a force out that took Liddi out at 2nd. Diaz then tripled to drive in Dunigan before Ochoa put his 3rd home run of the season over the left field wall to finish off the scoring.

Chris Cates, Richardson, Greg Yersich, Andrew Schmiesing and Jeanfred Brito were all 1-for-3, Cates with a walk as well. Estarlin De Los Santos was 1-for-4. No multiple hit and no extra bases. And only 1 walks.

Bromberg suffered his 8th loss of the season giving up 7 runs on 8 hits while striking out 8 over 5.1 innings.

Having rattled enough, the Snappers now get a little loony, returning to Pohlman Field to host the Great Lakes Loons for a 3-game series. First pitch is due at 7:00 PM.

Kingsport 8 at Elizabethton 9

The Elizabethton Twins were able to stop a late inning rally by the Kingsport Mets to remain n first place in the Appy League's west division.

Kingsport would get to E-Twins starter Bobby Lanigan first, when Seth Williams singled in the top of the 2nd inning. A fielding error by Danny Rams at first allowed Stefan Welch to reach and sent Williams to 3rd. Pedro Zapata's ground out served to plate Williams and a sac-fly by Doug McNulty brought in Welch.

Rafael Fernandez singled in the top of the 3rd, moved to 2nd on Kyle Suire's ground out and scored on a Charles Doyle line drive to left, making it 3-0 Kingsport.

The Twins would finally answer back though in the bottom of that inning when Dominic De La Osa was hit by a pitch. One out later, Jon Waltenbury put his 6th home run of the season over the right field wall to give Elizabethton two.

McNulty would homer in the top of the fourth, a solo-shot that cleared the center field fence.

Michael Harrington returned the favor in the bottom half of the inning, his 7th of the year going over the right field wall. Following a ground out to Evan Bigley and a strike out to Danny Rams, Angel Morales doubled and James Beresford took a walk. De La Osa reached on a force attempt to load the bags, but Romero would pop out to strand them.

Waltenbury lead off the attack in the fifth by drawing a walk. Manuel Alvarez would come into replace Collin McHugh on the mound and Alex Soto took a double off of him to bring Waltenbury home. Michael Harrington then double to score Soto, putting the E-Twins on top. Bigley launched his 7th home run of the season over the left center field wall for a pair of insurance runs. Rams would single before Jorge Rodriguez replaced Alvarez on the mound. Morales singled off the new hurler, as did Beresford, which plated Rams. De La Osa would go down on the strikes before Romero singled to drive in Morales. Having batted around the order, Waltenbury drew another walk. Soto hit into a force out this time that took Beresford out at home, saving the run. Harrington would ground out to end the inning.

With two outs in the top of the 7th, Suire walked and Doyle doubled. Wilmer Flores singled to drive in Suire and a Williams fly ball single brought in Doyle. E-Twins field manager would then bring in Steve Blevins to replace Lanigan. A throwing error by Beresford allowed Welch to reach and Flores to score before Blevins could get Zapata to ground out to bring the E-Twins up to bat again.

A walk to Fernandez and a double to Suire brought in the final Mets run.

Mark Hamburger worked the final inning for his fifth save of the season.

Rams and Morales were both 3-for-4 at the plate with a walk and a run, Morales with a double. Harrington was 2-for-5 with a double and a pair of runs and a pair of runs scored. Waltenbury was 1-for-3 with 2 walks, 2 runs and 2 RBIs, while De La Osa and Beresford were both 1-for-4, De La Osa with a run, Beresford with a walk and a run scored.

Romero, Soto and Bigley were each 1-for-5, Soto with a double a run and a RBI and Bigley with a run and two RBIs on the yarder.

The Twins take Tuesday off. They then head over to Greeneville to face the Astros on Wednesday for a 7:00 PM game.

DSL Rockies 1 at DSL Twins 4

Adrian Salcedo worked 7 innings for the DSL Twins, allowing only 1 run, earned on 7 hits and a walk while fanning four to pick up only his second win of the season as the DSL Twins downed the DSL Rockies, 4-1.

Felix Caro doubled , then came home on a Jhonatan Arias single in the bottom of the 3rd to open up the scoring for the D-Twins.

In the bottom of the sixth, Jairo Rodriguez reached on a fielders choice that saw Oswaldo Arcia taken out at home. Jean Carlos Mercedes singled to drive in Rodrigez, and Mercedes moved to 3rd on a throwing error by Miguel De Leon. A wild pitch by Rockie's starter Nelson Gonzalez allowed Mercedes to score.

Back-to-back doubles to Arcia and Jairo Perez in the bottom of the 8th, add an extra point on for the Twins, rounding out the offense.

The lone Rockie's run came in the form of Juan Crousset's fourth home run of the season in the top of the first.

Perez finished up 2-for-3 with a double while Arcia was 2-for-4 with a double and a run. Danny Santana, Arias and Mercedes were all 1-for-4, Santana with a double, Arias with a walk and Mercedes with a run. Caro was 1-for-3 with a double and a run. Rodriguez was 0-for-4 despite having a run.

Snappers blanked, DSL Twins blank Yankees2

Much like the Fort Myers Miracle, the Beloit Snappers lost their third straight, suffering a shut out at the hands of the South Bend Silverhawks.

Both teams would record five hits, but the difference was in the fielding for the Snappers as Beloit starter David Bromberg was changed with 2 runs, neither earned, on four hits and a pair of walks while striking out six.

The first four inning were a scoreless affair with both teams playing well. After taking Jimmy Principe and Matthew Oxendine out on strikes in the bottom of the fifth, Bromberg hit Joseph Batten with a pitch. Batten then stole second base and Collin Cowgill took a walk. A fielding error by Jeanfred Brito then allowed Taylor Harbin to reach and Batten to score.

Despite a single to Juan Richardson, a sac bunt by Mark Dolenc and a walk to Greg Yersich, the Snappers could not turn a run in the top of the 7th.

The bottom of the stanza would see Matthew Oxendine and Batten hit back-to-back singled. Batten would hit out to Mark Dolenc who over threw the ball back in from right, resulting in Oxendine crossing the plate for the second South Bend tally.

A pitching change, with Daniel Stange replacing Josh Collmenter for South Bend did nothing to improve the Snappers chances. Mike Allen would take over for Bromberg however, and the hard throwing Floridian would give up a home run to Chance Wheeless, with the ball clearing the right field wall.

Ben Revere was 1-for-4 with a double for the Snappers while Richardson, Yangervis Solarte, Andrew Schmiesing and Estarlin De Los Santos all having singles for Beloit.

Game two of the three game series is Thursday at 7:00 PM at Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium.

WHO'S HOT: OF Mark Dolenc is batting .429 (15-for-35) with a home run, six RBIs and 14 runs scored over his last 10 games. In 77 games this season he's hitting .271 (62-for-229) with seven doubles, two triples, two home runs and 28 RBIs.

WHO'S NOT: C Allan de San Miguel is batting just .095 (2-for-21) over his last seven games to lower his season average to .237 (14-for-59) with 17 strikeouts in 20 games.

ROSTER MOVES: IF Deibinson Romero was placed on the disabled list Saturday with a fractured right leg injured while falling into the home dugout during Friday's game. To fill his spot on the roster, IF Juan Richardson joined the team from the Elizabethton Twins, where he batted .250 with three doubles and 10 RBIs in 15 games.

DID YOU KNOW: Romero is making his second disabled list stint this season after hitting .264 with three home runs and 18 RBIs in 39 games. He was coming off a left knee injury that had sidelined him from April 28 to June 18. Signed by the Twins as a non-drafted free agent in July 2004, Romero was key in the Snappers' 2007 playoff run. He was promoted to Beloit from Elizabethton last September, a week before the Snappers began the postseason, and helped lead the squad to the Midwest League Finals where they would eventually fall to the West Michigan Whitecaps.

Greenville 7 at Elizabethton 2

The skid continues for the Elizabethton Twins, now up to 4-games, as Bobby Lanigan gave up 4 runs, 3 earned, on 11 hits while striking out 3 over five innings, leading to a 7-2 loss to the Greeneville Astros.

Jose Aluve homered in the top of the 3rd to get the scoring started for the Astros. One out later, Renzo Tello singled and then advanced to 2nd on a throwing error by E-Twins shortstop James Beresford. Frank Almonte singled to drive in Tello, giving the 'Stros and early two run lead.

Tello would single in the top of the 5th, then watch Almonte put his 4th home run of the season over the left field fence to Greeneville.

Danny Rondon would replace Lanigan in the top of the 6th and after getting Devon Torrence out on strikes, would watch Torrence take 1st base anyway on a passed ball by Alex Soto. A pick off attempt went wrong and Torrence advanced to 2nd. He'd go to 3rd on Ricardo Bonfante's ground out, and a second error by Beresford allowed the Astros left fielder to score and Jose Alluve to reach. Alluve would go to second on the play and would cross the plate on Jay Austin's line drive single.

A fielding error by Jon Waltenbury allowed Kody Hinze on base in the top of the seven. After Ebert Rosario flew out, Pedro Gonzalez hit a grounder to center to advance Hinze to 2nd. Torrence would take a walk to load the bags, while Bonfante's ground out plated Hinze to finish off the Astro's scoring.

The E-Twins finally found some offense as Michael Harrington took a walk off Colton Ptkin. He'd move to 2nd on Evan Bigley's ground out, and Angel Morales walked to fill the space. Beresford then singled to plate Harrington, saving Elizabethton from a shut out.

They'd take one more in the bottom of the 8th, with Harrington doubling and Bigley tripling him in.

Beresford was 2-for-3 with a walk and a RBI, while Bigley was 2-for-4 Harrington had a pair of runs after going 1-for-3 at the plate with a walk. Adam Severino and Waltenbury each doubled for the E-Twins and Sevarino took a walk as well, but neither factored into the scoring.

Game two of the 3-game set is Thursday at 7:00 PM at Joe O'Brien Stadium.

DSL Yankees2 0 at DSL Twins 3

The DSL Twins shut out the DSL Yankees2 proving that more is not better in terms of player development. Ramon Acosta worked 4 innings, scattering 3 hits and walk while striking out 4 to keep his 0.00 ERA. Leonardo Perra worked the next four innings, giving up a pair of hits and fanning two to pick up his 4th win of the season. Edison Alvarez logged his 10th save of the season.

Danny Santana would be hit by a pitch in the bottom of the first, then steal 2nd. He'd advance to 3rd on Jhonatan Arias' ground out and came home on another ground out, this one by Mauel Soliman.

Oswaldo Arcia singled in the bottom of the 4th, then moved to 2nd on Jair Rodriguez ground out. Jair Perez singled to move him to 3rd, a wild pitch by Yankees2 starter Jose Ramirez plated him.

Santana would single in the bottom of the seventh, and a throwing error on a pick off attempt saw Santana move to 3rd. Arias sacrificed him in for the Twins third run.

Jean Carlos Mercedes was 2-for-3 but did not factor into the scoring. Santana was 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs in the lead off position. Soliman had a double and Arcia and Jairo Perez each had a single.

The DSL Twins are on the road Thursday against the DSL Diamonback/Reds for a 10:30 AM Dominican time contest.

West Michigan rallies past Beloit

West Michigan 4 at Beloit 3

The West Michigan Whitecaps took 3 runs off reliever Loek Van Mil in the eighth inning to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Beloit Snappers at Pohlman Field.

John Tucker would reach on a fielding error by Estarlin De Los Santos. Kody Kaiser then doubled off the Dutchman, moving Tucker to 3rd. Jordan Newton drew a walk to load the bags. A wild pitch by Van Mil scored Tucker, and Keith Stein sacrificed in Kaiser to tie up the score. Another wild pitch by Van Mil moved Newton to 3rd, and Adrian Casanova sacrificed him in for the game winning run.

West Michigan had gotten on the board first with Tucker doubling off starter David Bromberg with one out on the board. After Kaiser went down on strikes, Newton took walk. Keith Stein's ground ball to center scored Tucker. Stein would try to reach 2nd, but didn't make it, with Ben Revere relaying the ball to Deibinson Romero who fired it Jeanfred Brito.

Romero would leave the game in the top of the 4th with a broken leg. As a result, Bromberg, who made quite a name for himself as a hitter in JuCo, took over for Romero in the clean up role, batting fourth.

De Los Santos flew out to start the bottom of the fourth, but Chris Cates took a walk. A wild pitch by Whitecaps starter Maurico Robles moved Cates to 2nd. Revere would go down on strikes before a second wild pitch moved Cates to 3rd. Bromberg then took a walk. Mark Dolenc would lift a ball over the center field wall for his second home run of the year, giving the Snappers three.

While the loss of Romero hit the team hard, it was a potentially fun night for the pitchers, who never get to bat. Only Craig Anderson got a single in his at bat, although Bromberg had the walk and the run.

Not much in the way of hitting for any of the Snappers though as De Lo and Revere were both 1-for-4, while Dolenc and Allan de San Miguel were 1-for-3 each, Dolenc with the run and 3 RBIs.

The Timber Rattlers now come into town to pay the Snappers a visit. Steve Hirschfeld (5-2, 2.82) will throw out the first pitch for Beloit at 7:00 Central Time. Wisconsin will counter with Brett Lorin (0-0, 0.00)

Roger's Minor League Report

Romero heads to the DL for the second time this season after hitting .264 with three home runs and 18 RBIs in 39 games. Deibinson was coming off a left knee injury that sidelined him from April 28th to June 18th earlier this season.

Signed by the Twins as a non-drafted free agent in July of 2004, Romero was key in the Snappers 2007 playoff run. Deibinson was promoted to Beloit from E-town last season on September 2nd, one week before Beloit entered the postseason. He helped lead the Snappers all the way to the Midwest League Finals where they would eventually fall to the West Michigan Whitecaps.

To replace Romero on the roster the Minnesota Twins have promoted Juan Richardson from the Elizabethton Twins.

Richardson comes to Beloit after spending 15 games with the Elizabethton Twins. While in E-town, Richardson hit .250 with three doubles and 10 RBIs in 60 at-bats.

Richardson was signed by the Twins as a non-drafted free agent in February of ’07. Juan spent 2007 with the GCL Twins where he hit .317 with 64 hits in 202 at-bats. Richardson also notched 10 doubles and 33 RBIs in 54 games. (Snappers)

Snappers stun Wizards

The Beloit Snapper offense erupted for 13 run on 13 hits to bury the Fort Wayne Wizards, 13-2.

David Bromberg worked seven scoreless innings for Beloit, allowing only 3 hits and a walk while striking out 9 - the sort of performance that got him named to the All-star game, but which as been lacking of late.

The Snaps began their offensive onslaught in the second inning, with Deibinson Romero reaching on a throwing error by Lance Zawadzki. Reve Leveret singled to move him to second and Mark Dolenc would get hit by a pitch. Allan de San Miguel hit into a force out that brought Romero and Leveret home, but took Dolenc out at 2nd. A throwing error by Lawadzki moved Dirty to 2nd. Andrew Schmiesing then reached on a fielding error that scored the Snappers Aussie catcher. Estarlin de Los Santos ground out and Jeanfred Brito struck out to end the inning.

Chris Cates opened the bottom of the 3rd with a line drive to right, and Ben Revere followed it up with a line drive to left. Romero would reach on force attempt to load the bags. Leveret hit into a force out that scored Cates and took Romero out at 2nd. Dolenc would go down on strikes before Dirty's line drive plated Revere. A throwing error by Danny Payne advanced the runners and Schmiesing doubled them in. De Lo took a walk but Brito ground out to give the Wizards a chance.

Cates opened the bottom of the 4th by reaching on a fielding error - one of seven the Wizards would make over the course of the game. Revere then singled and Romero would get hit by a pitch to load the bags up again. The Wizards finally called for a pitching change, replacing the heavily hit Wynn Petzer with Matt Teague. Teague did not fair much better however, as Leveret double off of him to clean off the bases. Dolenc would single to put two men on before Dirty lined out. Schmeising walked and De Lo would get hit by a pitch to again load up the baggies. Omar Gutierrez was pulled out of the bullpen to replace Teague and would get Brito to hit into a ground out that scored Dolenc. As the team batted around the order, Cates then ground out to end retire the Snappers with the score 12-0.

Things would calm down after that, and the Snappers would not score again until the top of the sixth with De Lo taking a walk with one out on the board. Brito flew out and Cates reached on a throwing error that also put De Lo over the plate.

The bottom of the 8th saw Dutchmen Loek Van Mil come into replace Bromberg. He'd get Yetri Carvajal to line out before waking Parrino. Anthony Contreras singled and wild pitch from Van Mil advanced the pair. Luis Martinez walked before Brad Chalk reached on a force attempt. A throwing error by Van Mil allowed Parrino to score and spoiled Beloit's shut out. Robert Perry would then sacrifice in Cantreras. Zawadzki would walk to load the bags before Van Mil would get Danny Payne to line to end the inning.

Danny Hernandez came in to close the game for the Snappers, striking out two.

Revere and Leveret where 3-for-5 at the plate, Revere with a walk and a pair of runs and Leveret with a double, 3 runs and 4 RBIs. Dolenc was 2-for-4 with a run and a run scored. Brito, Cates, Romero, and Dirty all had singles, while Schmeising had a double.

Having had their full of Wizards, the Beloit continues their trip through the realms of Myth to take on the Dragons in Daytona on Saturday. First pitch is due at 6:00 PM.

Elizabethton 3 at Johnson City 4

It would take 15 innings, but the Johnson City Cardinals slipped by the Elizabethton Twins 4-3.

The E-Twins got onto the board first when Dominic De La Osa singled, Nick Romero took a walk and Jon Waltenbury singled to load the bags. After Danny Rams went down on strikes, Michael Harrington sacrificed in De La Osa.

Shooter Hunt took the start on the mound for the Elizabethton and dealt through five innings, walking only 2 and striking out 10. Thom Wright would take over the sixth and the Cards saw their first hit when Brett Lilley singled. He'd not go far as Guillermo Toribio ground into a force out, Nico Vasquez's ground out to Toribio at 2nd, and Rams passed a ball, moving him to 3rd. Curt Smith then singled out to left to score Toribio, tying up the game.

And it would stay tied until the 14th inning. Santo Maertz came onto the mound for the Cards, and after a pop out to Bigley, Juan Richardson took a single off of him. A throwing error on the pick off attempt saw Richardson to 3rd. Angel Morales would get plunked by a pitch before James Beresford singled to drive in Richardson putting the Twins on top. But baseball is not sudden death. So the Cards got a chance.

Mark Hamburger was on the mound for the Twins and pitching well. He'd take Ivan Castro down on strikes before Edgar Lara singled. Jarred Bogany replaced Lara as a pinch runner, and Hamburger walked Osvaldo Morales. A passed ball by Alex Soto moved the pair, and a Paul Cruz ground out put Bogany over the plate.

On to the fifteenth inning. Waltenbury walked and Soto double. Harrington was issued an intentional walk to load the plate before Bigley went down on strikes. Richardson would single to drive in Waltenbury, but Soto would be taken out at home and Morales would strike out before more damage could be down.

Lee Martin replaced Hamburger on the mound and allowed a single to Lilley and walk to Toribio. Vasquez advanced the runners with a sac bunt, Martin then intentionally walked Curtis Smith. Invan Castro singled out to center to bring in Lilley and Toribio, ending the game as the Cards had home field advantage.

The teams rematch on Saturday, hopefully for a somewhat shorter contest, as I'm sure they are all worn out from this one. Game time is 7:00 PM Eastern.

Hurtin' Snappers blanked by Cedar Rapids

David Bromberg allowed 6 runs, 5 earned on 8 hits and a walk while striking out four in 5.1 innings as the the Cedar Rapids Kernels went on to blank the Beloit Snappers, 7-0.

The Snappers showed little offensively recording only six hits in the game, with Ben Revere getting 3 of them, finishing up 3-for-4 at the plate. Chris Cates and Allen de San Miguel were both 1-for-3, Cates also had a walk, while Greg Yersich was 1-for-4.

Ryan Groth led off the contest with a home run, his first of the season over the center field wall, a pretty good indication things were not going to go the Snappers way. Andrew Romine then tripled, and came home on Hector Estrella's ground out to give the Kernels a pair of runs.

Romine would singled in the top of the 3rd then moved to 2nd on a throwing error by Marc Dolenc. Esterella then doubled him in to make it 3-0 Cedar Rapids.

In the top of the sixth, Jay Brossman would single with one out and Clay Fuller would get hit by a pitch. Julio Perez doubled to drive in 2 more. After Ariel De Los Santos was hit by a pitch, Nelson Prada would hit the bullpen up for Charles Nolte to replace Bromberg. Nolte would allow a single to Tyler Johnson which plated Perez before getting the final two outs.

Chris Anderson would come in for the top of the ninth and Estrella struck again, this time a double out to self. A wild pitch saw Elstrella to 3rd, and he'd be sacrificed in by Brossman for the Kernel's seventh and final run.

Having had enough popcorn for the home stand, the Snappers now welcome in the Clinton Lumberkings for a four game set, with Tueday's first pitch due out at 7:00 PM.

Elizabethton 12 at Burlington 0

The Burlington Royals probably preferred the rain. As it was, what they got was not a thunderstorm, but the thunder of the Elizabethton Twins bats as they pulverized the Royals in both halves of a double header.

Nick Romero and Nick Papasan recorded a pair of home runs in game one. Romero would finish up 1-for-3 with a pair of walks, a pair of runs and a RBI. Papasan and Evan Bigley were both 3-for-4, Papi with 3 runs and 3 RBIs, while Bigly settled for 1 run and 1 RBI.

Jon Waltenbury went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run and a run scored. Dominic De La Osa was 3-for-5 with a run and 2 RBIs while Michael Harrington was 2-for-5 with a run and a RBI. Everyone in the line up had at least one hit and all but James Beresford had at least one run.

Danny Osterbrock allowed 2 hits and a walk over 5 innings to confound the Royals, fanning 2 over that time frame. Lee Martin and Thom Wright finished up the last two.

An eight-run fourth inning put the Elizabethton Twins well over the top in the game two.

Alex Soto's solo shot home run was just a bit of special treat in the fifth.

Jon Waltenbury was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs and runs batted in. Evan Bigly and Alex Soto were both 2-for-4, Bigley with 2 RBIs, Soto with two runs and 4 RBIs. Jeanfred Brito was 2-for-5 with 2 runs. Everyone in the line up had a hit except for Danny Rams, who walked twice, and Adan Severino, a new addition from Broward Community College, who also drew a pair of walks.

Bobby Lanigan gave up 1 run on 1 hit and a walk while striking out 2. Danny Rondon and Mark Hamburger each worked an inning to finish up the contest.

Look for more thunder tonight at Burlington Athletic Stadium - thunder that won't be coming from the sky.

Snappers notable, but not shining at All-Stars game

West All-Stars 5 at East All-Stars 4

It would take 10 innings for the West All-Stars to defeat the East All-Stars, with Clinton's Timothy Smith (Texas) earning MVP honors by going yard off Miguel Ramirez of the host Great Lakes Loons (LA Dodgers) for the game winner.

For the Twins batters, Ben Revere would be o-for-2, as was short stop Chris Cates. Jair Fernandez would go 1-for-2 at the plate with a strike out.

David Bromberg did not fair well in his start, allowing three runs on three hits and 2 walks over .2 innings worth of work.

Steve Hirschfield worked 1 inning, allowing 1 run on 1 hit while fanning three. Loek Van Mil took over for the following inning, allowing a hit and a walk and striking out 1 but keeping the East off the board.

Spencer Steedley worked .1 inning, giving up 2 hits.

Yes, it's true. The only runs give up to the East came from Snappers players.

Bromberg was the hardest hit, walking designated hitter Manuel Rodriguez (Toronto) and infielder Andrew Parrino (San Diego) to start. He'd get Evan Frey (Arizona) out on strikes, but a single by Peter Kosma (St. Louis) loaded the bases. Andrew Lambo's (LA Dodgers) line drive brought in Rodriguez, while Chris Carlson's (Detroit) ground out plated Parrino. A single to Charles Kingrey (St. Louis) brought Kozma past the plate and prompted a pitcher change, with Trevor Reckling (LA Angels) coming in to finish off the inning.

All four of the West's runs would come while the All-Star starters were still in the game. Fernandez would single in the tenth after Smith's game winner had gone out of the park.

Miracle blanked by Brevard

Evidently the Brevard County Manatees had no intention of letting the Fort Myers Miracle clinch a division title in their stadium. Or perhaps Jeff Smith forgot to mention they needed to put some offense together to win games.

Jeff Manship allowed 3 runs - earned - on six hits while striking out 3 over six innings of work; a quality start, but still not one of his better performances. (Sorry Manny, but we raise the standard for you.)

The Miracle had the bases loaded in the first, but Eli Tintor struck out to end the inning.

Brevard opened up the scoring in the bottom of the 4th when Jimmy Mojica singled then stole 2nd. Taylor Green's ground out moved him to 3rd, and he'd be plated by a Charlie Fermaint line drive to center.

In the bottom of the sixth, singles to Mojica, Cain and Green loaded the bases. Mojica scored on Fermaint's ground out, and a Stephen Chapman sac fly brought in Cain.

Danny Santiesteban would get on base with singles in the top of the second and the top of the 7th, but would get picked off at first on both occasions.

Matt Fox replaced Manship in the bottom of the 7th. After getting Kenny Holmberg out on strikes, Anderson De La Rosa and Yohannis Perez hit back to back singles. Mojica sacrificed in De La Rosa and Cain tripled to drive in Perez.

The bottom of the 8th would see Blair Erickson replace Fox on the mound. He'd allow a double to Chapman, but was able to leave the runner stranded.

The Miracle found a pair of singles in the top of the 9th, but it was all they could muster with the bottom of the order going down meekly.

Fort Myers heads home to host the Vero Beach Devil Rays for a four-game series starting on Monday. Deolis Guerra (6-2, 4.89) will get the start on the mound for the Miracle. Much as I like Señor Guerra as an individual, I am still not overwhelmed by his pitching abilities. Perhaps he will offer the Miracle fans a pleasant surprise after last Wednesday's performance.

The Palm Beach Cardinals secured their playoff berth on Saturday despite dropping a 7-5 decision to the Tampa Yankees. The blanking of the Brevard County Manatees on Saturday by the Fort Myers Miracle put the Manatees 8 games behind Palm Beach with 8 left to play. The first half of the FSL season ends June 18, 2008. The Kane County Cougars took four runs off David Bromberg in the fifth inning and hung on to defeat the Beloit Snappers, 4-2 at Elfstrom Stadium.

The Snappers got on the board first. Chris Parmelee would be plunked with a pitch. He'd then steal 2nd base. A sac-bunt by Jair Fernandez got him to 3rd. Following a walk to Steve Singleton, Joe Benson hit into a ground out that scored Parmelee.

Bromberg worked 7 innings, allowing 5 hits and a pair of walks while striking out 5. Larry Cobb started out the bottom of the 5th by hitting a fly ball single off Bromberg. Corey Brown would ground into a force out, which took Cobb out. Dusty Napoleon singled to move Brown to 2nd and Daniel Hamblin took a free pass off Bromberg to load the bags. Justin Frash then walked to force in a run. Shane Keough's line drive to right brought in Napoleon and Hamblin. Adam Klein would sacrifice in Frash for the fourth run before Bromberg got Matt Ray out on strikes.

Cougar starter Scott Mitchinson must have been on a foul mood, as he would hit Ben Revere with a pitch to start off the top of the sixth. Revere paid him back by stealing 2nd, and advanced to 3rd on a throwing error by Napoleon. Chris Cates would single to drive in Revere cutting the Cougars lead in half.

Mark Dolenc would single a line drive to center and Revere doubled to plate him in the top of the 8th. That would do it for Mitchinson as the Aussie hurler was taken from the mound in favor of Justin Friend. Despite a sac-bunt and walk, the Snappers would leave Revere stranded at 3rd and the tying run unscored.

Matt Williams pitched a perfect 8th inning for Beloit, striking out 2.

Cates was 2-for-3 in the contest. Steve Singleton picked up a double in the top of the 5th but could do nothing with it.

The Snappers return to Pohlman Field to host a four-game series starting on Monday against the Cedar Rapid Kernels. Mike Tarsi (3-7, 5.62) will throw out the first pitch for Beloit at 7:00 PM central time.

The Twins re-drafted Johnny Bromberg in the 49th round on Friday, he is the brother of David Bromberg and was previously drafted in the 32nd Round in 2007. He turned down an offer last year to pitched for Pierce College in Los Angeles.

Beloit shuts down Quad Cities; Red wings, Rock Cats lose

Unlike his High-A counterpart, David Bromberg did not go the distance, but he did blank the Quad City River Bandits for six innings, holding them to 3 hits and 4 walks while fanning 8.

Fellow Midwest League All-stars Steve Hirschfield and Spencer Steedley would be called upon to finish the game, taking the Beloit Snappers to a 5-0 victory.

Chris Cates would take a walk with one out in the bottom of the first. Garrett Olson hit into a force out that took Cates out at 2nd, and Ozzie Lewis would knock a fly ball to left to move him to 2nd. Steve Singleton then doubled out to right to plate Olson for the first Snappers run.

Ramon Santana hit a solo shot home run in the 5th, shortly before the R-Bandits batting coach was ejected by the home plate umpire.

In the bottom of the 8th, Lewis knock a line drive to right to make his way onto the base paths, and Singelton reach on a fielding error by Quad Cities 2nd baseman Mike Folli. Joe Benson would fly out to right to advance the pair. Chris Parmelee was then intentionally walked, and Jair Fernandez drew a walk to force in Lewis. Following a strike out to Santana, Ben Revere's ground ball to center drove in Singleton and Parmelee.

Lewis was 2-for-3 in the game with a walk and a run, raising his average to .198. Santana was 2-for-4 with a run and a RBI, but with a pair strike outs as well.

Lefty Mike Tarsi (3-6, 5.64) takes to the mound Wednesday at 7:00 PM Central Time for the Snappers for the final game in the series.

Luke Hughes hit his 13th home run of the year, bringing Steve Tolleson and Toby Gardenhire home with him, but it was not quite enough as the New Britain Rock Cats fell to the Altoona Curve, 4-3.

Ryan Mullins gave up 4 runs (3 earned) on 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 2 over six innings, suffering his 4th loss of the season.

Gardenhire was 3-for-3 at the plate. Brock Peterson, Trevor Plouffe, and Dustin Martin were all one hit wonders for the Rock Cats.

Game two of the 3 game series is Wednesday at 7:05 Pm with Anthony Swarzak (3-2, 4.18) on the mound for the Rock Cats.

Randy Ruiz hit his 4th home run of the season, a single shot over the right field fence, in the bottom of the fifth inning. But the Red Wings were already playing catch up at that point.

Kevin Mulvey had allowed 4 runs (only 1 earned) on 5 hits and 3 balls while striking out 4 over six. Garrett Jones fielding error in the bottom of the fourth lead to the 3 unearned runs.

In the top of the 7th, Jason Pridie would go yard, his 3rd of the year. Jones would double, move to 3rd on a Chris Basak ground out and be plated by Ruiz's line drive to center.

Jones finished up 2-for-3 with a walk and a run, while Ruiz was 2-for-4 with a run and a pair of runs scored.

McDonald and Buscher each had a hit for the Wings, but did not factor into the scoring.

The Red Wings pitching staff had allowed at least one home run (eight total home runs) in seven straight games, a streak that ended Tuesday.

Rochester has a 19-9 record when the Wings score four runs or more in a game, but only a 5-27 record when the Red Wings score three or fewer runs.

The two teams rematch on Wednesday for a 7:05 PM start. Jeff Harris (2-3, 5.11) will start for Buffalo. Former Miracle Brian Duensing (2-5, 4.43) will be on the mound for the Red Wings.

Snappers sweep Chiefs

David Bromberg picked up his second win of the season, allowing 3 runs, 2 earned, on 7 hits and 2 walks with 6 strike outs for a quality start.

The Chiefs would get on the scoreboard in the second inning, when Bromberg walked Cliff Anderson. Brandon Guyer followed that up with ground bunt single. A missed catch by Ramon Santana on a pick off attempt allowed the runners to advance. Bromberg would take Luis Bautista out on strikes before a Mario Mercedes single to left brought the runners home.

Beloit snapped right back however, with catcher Jair Fernandez reaching on a fielding error by Marquez Smith. Joe Benson followed him onto the bags with a line drive single. Ozzie Lewis single loaded the bases. Greg Yersich would pop out before Santana's line drive brought in the lead off pair. Santana would try to stretch the play for a double, but was taken out at 2nd base.

The Snappers seemed to like Todd Blackford who replaced Kevin Kreier at the bottom of the 5th. With the score tied, and one out on the board, Mark Dolenc singled, then moved to 2nd on a balk. He then stole third. Garrett Olson would strike out, and Chris Parmelee and Fernandez drew walks to load the bags. Joe Benson would then double out to left to drive in the runners. Benson would be stranded on Lewis' ground out, but he'd brought in what would evenutally be the game winning runs.

Bautista doubled with 2 outs on the board in the sixth, then came home when Mercedes line drive deflected off Bromberg and into right field. Bromberg would unleash a wild pitch to move Mercedes to second, but he got Dylan Johnson to ground out to end retire the side.

Loek Van Mil would take over in the top of the 7th, going 3-up, 3 down. In the top of the 8th, he'd walk Guyer. Bautista's double moved Guyer to 3rd, and he'd be plated by a Mercedes sac fly. Bautista would try to make it to 3rd and failed, and a pop out to Johnston ended the scoring threat.

Aussie Matt Williams took care of three Chiefs in order to pick up his fourth save of the season in the ninth.

Benson was 3-for-4 with a run and 3 RBIs. Ben Revere has taken a couple of days off to handle some personal matters and will return to the line up shortly. Having swept the Chiefs off their home field, the Snappers will take to the road Monday for a four-game series against the Western Division leading Clinton Lumberkings at Alliant Energy Field. First pitch is sent for 7:00 P.M.

Snappers finish off Lansing late

A pitchers duel and a big 5-run 9th inning gave the Snappers the win in Lansing Tuesday afternoon, as they took the series 2 games to one.

Ben Revere would open with a double for the Snappers off Lansing starter Marc Rzepczynski. Chris Cates sac bunt would move him to 3rd, and he'd come home on Garrett Olson's ground out, putting Beloit on the board.

It was a short lived lead though, as Raul Barron singled out left to get on base. Following a strike out to Wesley Stone, Barron would be caught trying to steal second with a pick off by Beloit starter David Bromberg. Justin Jackson would take a walk and then be doubled in by Matthew Liuzza to tie up the score.

Bromberg would work six inning, striking out 9. He'd only give up 3 hits and allow 3 walks in that time frame, plus the one earned run. Steve Hirschfeld would take over for the next three.

Rzepczynski worked 4.2 innings allowing 2 hits and striking out 4. Tim Collins would come in for the final out in the fifth, and then hand the pitching chores over to Jay's prospect Alan Farina. Farina struck around for 2 inning, allowing 2 hits and 1 walk while striking out 3. Brad Cuthbertson took over at that point which brings us to the 9th inning.

Chris Parmelee reached on a fielding error and was replaced by Joe Benson as a pinch runner. Ramon Santana's bunt moved Benson to 3rd, putting runners at the corners. Steve Singleton's line drive scored Benson. Dan Lehmann would hit a sac bunt to move the runners and a wild pitch by Cutherbertson brought Santana in. The Snappers take Wednesday off, then begin a four game series against the Bees in Burlington. The are in 5th place in the Western division, 9 games back from Clinton, but it's only early May and there's still a lot of baseball to be played. Beloit is 8-8 on the road this year and won 7 of their last 10, a vast improvement over the slow start they suffered.
