Miracle rained out, Rock Cats slip by Aeros

Friday's game between the Fort Myers Miracle and the Lakeland Flying Tigers has been postponed. The two teams will attempt to play a doubleheader on Wednesday, in Fort Myers, beginning at 5:05 PM.

Thundershowers through out the day made field at Joker Marchant Stadium unplayable.

The Miracle now travel to Clearwater although I'm sure they'd find place called "clear weather" more to their liking. The three-contest set against the Thresher is their last road series of the regular season. Lefty Spencer Steedley (1-3, 7.83) will take the start against Threshers right hander Drew Naylor (2-7, 5.63).

Akron 2 at New Britain 3

The New Britain Rock Cats took a one run lead over the Akron Aeros in the bottom of the fifth, and hung through 3 1/2 more innings to pick up a win at New Britain Stadium.

The top of the 4th saw the Indians AA farm team jump to a two run lead. Stephen Head singled on a line drive and Matthew Whitney doubled. Back-to-back singles to Bronson Sardinha and Damaso Espino brought in the pair of runners. Nathan Panther would move the pair left on base with a sac bunt, but Jarad Head popped out and Josh Rodriguez struck out to retire the side.

Kyle Aselton would work six innings for the Rock Cats, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits and a pair of walks while fanning 4 to pick up the win.

David Winfree doubled in the bottom of the inning. Following a strike out to Dustin Martin, Danny Berg would reach on a throwing error as Winfree advanced to 3rd. Toby Gardenhire would go down on strikes, but Rocky Palacios singled to score Winfree.

With two outs on the board in the bottom of the fifth, Danny Valencia would double Aeros' starter Ryan Edell. Winfree then launched his 19th home run of the season over the center field wall to give the Rock Cats two more runs.

Zach Ward would work 1.1 innings of relief for the Cats, giving way to Jose Mijares in the top of the 8th. Mija would strike out Panther in the top of the 9th, but walked J-Head. Rodriguez struck out swinging as well. The Cats then put Rob Delaney on the mound for the final pitch, as he got Brandon Pinckney to fly out to pick up only his 3rd AA save.

Winfree finished up 2-for-4 with a pair of runs and a pair of RBIs. Matt Tolbert, Steve Tolleson, Valencia, and Martin were all 1-for-4, Tolleson and Martin with doubles, Valencia with a double and a run. Palacios was 1-for-3, with a RBI.

The two teams rematch on Saturday for a 7:05 game.

In Triple-A play, the Rochester Red Wings topped the Pawtucket Red Sox 5-1 at Frontier Field. Former Miracle Garrett Jones knocked his 21st home run of the season over the left field wall in the top of the 5th.

Burlington again came way with a win against the Beloit Snappers, a 4-2 victory. Shooter Hunt surrendered all 4 runs on six hits and five (!) walks while fanning 3 over four innings. It was his 3rd loss in a Snappers Uniform. (Bees)

Team USA gave up six runs in the 9th inning, leading to a 10-2 loss in Olympic play for the boys wearing the Red, White and Blue. This lands them in the bronze medal game against Japan, which is scheduled for 10:30 PM on Friday Night. (USA Baseball)

The Jays clinched the their playoff berth by routing Tampa 11-0 on Friday. A.J. Wideman worked six innings for the Jays. Despite their playoff record against the Fort Myers Miracle, Dunedin has never won a FSL championship. (MiLB.com)

Danny Valencia, Steve Tolleson, Dustin Martin, Rob Delaney, Anthony Slama and Tim Lahey will all play for Red Wings' field manager Stan Cliburn in this year's Arizona Fall League. Cliburn was earlier named manager of the Twins affiliated Pheonix Desert Dogs.

Rain forces game cancelations in final week of GCL play

Continued thundershowers in the wake of Hurricane Fay saw the start of cancellations for Gulf Coast League teams as they enter their final weekend of play.

Games between the GCL Blue Jays and GCL Tigers, and GCL Yankees and GCL Phillies were both cancelled.

The double header between the Indians and Braves was postponed at was the game between the GCL Marlins and the GCL Nationals. The game between the Orioles and Reds Sox was suspended, and is scheduled to resume on Wednesday, August 27, which would make back-to-back double headers for Boston, as they are schedule to play two against the GCL Twins on Tuesday.

The Dodgers and the Cardinals got 8 innings in, with the Dodgers leading 11-2 at the time, claiming the win in the rain shortened contest.

In Bradenton, the GCL Reds defeated the GCL Pirates, holding them to a one game lead over the Twins. The Phillies are leading in the North Division and the Dodgers in the East, but Nationals are just half a game behind.

The idle Twins continue to lead the wild card race by a wide margin. Right now, it looks like the Twins will end up playing the Pirates in the single-game elimination round of the GCL playoffs.

After two days off, the boys should be ready to rock the Pirates tomorrow morning in Bradenton!

Joe Testa's second start for the GCL Twins did not go as well as his first. Testa started Wednesday's game in Lakeland against the Flying Tigers and gave up 6 runs, five earned on 6 hits and 3 walks while fanning 3.

Even so, the rookie's done will after taking a walk across the parking lot.

There was still a nice article - or at least a part of it, in the Brick Township Bulletin about him.

"I jumped over two levels — Advanced Rookie and Low A," Testa was quoted as saying the article. "It's exciting, and I got my first start."

It should be noted however that in these cases where a prospect is moved in an emergency call up situation, they rarely stay at the same level for the following year.

Yangervis Solarte stayed with Fort Myers for quite a while at the mid-season mark before being reassigned to Low A Beloit to finish off the year. Jeff Manship, who started his career with the Miracle in 2006, was sent to Beloit in 2007 to begin the season.

Still Testa pitched well, but will have to learn to switch up his pitches more. While the fastball and the cutter worked the first time out, the seasoned FSL pitchers will tell you that at least 3 pitches are needed - including the off speed change up - to be successful at the High A level.

Fay dropped a lot of rain on southwest Florida, but left little damage or flooding in the Fort Myers and Cape Coral areas. My mother seemed let down that wasn't wading around in water up to my waste after seeing the devastation in other parts of the state on TV.

However, we're all fine, as is the ballpark and we're all ready to play a little hardball, just as soon as the Thunderstorms stop.

For former GCL Twin Loek van Mil, pitching in the Olympics was a huge honor. However, the tall Dutchman didn't even get into one game, as he suffered a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament during a bullpen session in China. He left the site of the Olympics to return to the Twin Cities to be checked by team doctors.

Van Mil had been with the Low A Beloit Snappers before leaving for the Olympics. He enjoyed a a good deal of success in the league after being prompted to throw as hard as he could, increasing his velocity to 94-95 miles an hour from his previous 87 miles per hour.

The 7'1" right hander received a good deal of media coverage with the Snappers this year as the tallest player in professional baseball. A strange twist of fate landed him on the team with shortstop Chris Cates, who at 5'3" is the shortest player in professional baseball.

Van Mil was a starter for the GCL Twins in 2006. He was moved back to the bullpen to start the 2007 season with short season Elizabethton and has prospered in the reliever's role.

DSL Orioles 6 at DSL Twins 12

The host DSL Twins doubled up the DSL Orioles Thursday morning, take a huge 12-6 win over the visiting team.

The Orioles would get on the board first, taking six runs, only 2 earned, on six hits from starter Adrian Salcedo, who fanned 3 over 2 innings.

A pair of passed balled by catcher Jhonatan Arias and a fielding error by centerfielder Wilfy Gil contributed to the unearned runs.

The Twins would strike back in the bottom of the fourth, with Oswaldo Arcia doubling, and then advancing to 3rd on a fielding error. Jairo Perez sacrificed him in to put the Twins on the board. Jean Carlos Mercedes singled, and Eliel Sierra double to put runners in scoring position. Rafael Sanchez would be called out on strikes, but Juan Blanco reached on a fielding error which also scored Mercedes. Yorby Martinez would single in Sierra before Gil ground into a force out to end the inning.

Danny Santana would get hit by a pitch in the bottom of the 5th. A wild pitch from the Orioles' Julio Sanchez moved Santana to 2nd. Arcia would fly out, but Perez would get plunked by a pitch next. Another wild pitch from Sanchez advanced the pair of runners. Mercedes would take walk to load the bases. Sierra singled to drive in Santana before Isreal Sosa came in to replace the struggling Sanchez, getting two quick outs to preserve the O's lead.

The Twins had other ideas however. Martinez and Gil would draw back-to-back walks to start the inning, prompting another pitching change. This time Jose Sosa took over the mound. Santana greeted him with single which combined with a fielding error, scored Martinez and put Gil on 3rd. Aracia's grounder to center plated Arcia for the tying run. A wild pitch from Sosa advanced the two runners before Perez reached on a fielding error that also allowed Santana to score. Mercedes ground out plated Arcia before Sierra would be hit by pitch. Pinch hitter Jairo Rodriguez singled to load up the bags again. William Princivil would be brought in to get the O's out of their jam, but unleashed a wild pitch instead, sending Perez over the plate. He would then get Blanco out on strikes before Martinez flew out to end the inning with the Twins leading 9-6.

A triple by Santana added another pair of runs in the 7th while a double by Martinez and a pair of wild pitches made it an even dozen in the 8th.

Raynard Doran and Leonardo Parra tossed six hitless innings for the Twins, with Parra picking up the win, his sixth of the season.

With the Win, the Twins tie up the DSL Yankees2 for the top spot in the B.C. North Division. There are two more games remaining as the Twins visit the DSL White Sox on Friday and host the DSL Indians on Sunday to finish off the season.

Tropical Storm Fay 1, Fort Myers 0

Monday's game between the Sarasota Red and the Fort Myers Miracle at Ed Smith Stadium was canceled as weather conditions deteriorated in the area due to Tropical Storm Fay.

Fay is expected make landfall in the Fort Myers area on Tuesday around 8:00 AM. She is expected to be packing winds of up to 95 miles per hour, at Category One Hurricane.

As this was the last game between the two teams scheduled for the 2008 season, it will not be made up. The Reds win the 19-game season series, 11 games to 8.

The Florida State League takes a scheduled day off on Tuesday, the Miracle return on action on Wednesday against the Lakeland Flying Tigers at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland. First pitch is due for 7:00 PM.

This is the final road trip of the 2008 season. Fort Myers returns home on Tuesday, August 26th for their final regular season home stand.

Ladendorf homers as Twins cool off Reds

The Twins took an early lead Friday at the Lee County Sportsplex and never relinquished it, picking up a 5-1 win over the 3rd placed Reds in the South Division standings.

Andres Diaz singled his way onto base and one out later, Tyler Ladendorf hit his first home run of the season over the left field. That was definitely a feel good run as Ladendorf has struggled at the plate this season and everyone has been pulling for him.

Maurico Pimentel and Kevin Coddington hit back-to-back singles off Twins starter Martire Garcia. Alexis Oliveras singled to drive in Pimentel for the Reds lone run. Garcia would induce Humberto Sosa to ground into a double play and then took Eli Rimes out on strikes to retire the side.

Jakub Hajtmar doubled in the bottom of the sixth, and Gonzalez singled him in. Andres Diaz would take a single too, but Hyeong-rok Choi would flyout, ending the inning.

The Reds replaced Canadian hurler Evan Hildenbradt with Bryan Gardner in the bottom of the seventh. Ladendorf would go down on strikes, but Danny Rohlfing drew a walk. Herbert Lara singled and Arron Hicks doubled to score the pair, to give the Twins their fourth and fifth runs.

Garcia worked six for the Twins allowing just the one run on 3 hits and a walk while striking out six. He's been somewhat of a human strike out machine all season long. Mauro Schiavoni picked up his second save of the season, allowing a pair of hits while fanning two over three innings.

Ladendorf lead the attack, going 2-for-3 at the plate with run and 2 RBIs. Diaz would finish up 2-for-4 with a run, while Hicks, Hajtmar, Danny Ortiz, and Gonzalez were all 1-for-4, Hajtmar with a run, Hicks with 2 RBIs and Gonzales with one, leaving Ortiz to be the one hit wonder of the game.

Lara finished up 1-for-3 with a run at the bottom of the order. Rohlfing would hit 0-and-2, but parlayed a walk into a run for the Twins.

The Twins finish off this four game set on the road against the GCL Red Sox at the City of Palms Complex. As it's Saturday, the game beings at 10:00 AM. The Twins then rest on Sunday.

The Dominican Summer League game between the DSL Cubs1 and the DSL Twins was postponed due to rain from Tropical Storm Fay, which is likely to threaten the Florida coast early next week. The DSL Twins are schedule to take on the DSL Reds on the road on Saturday, weather permitting, for a 10:30 AM game. With seven games left in the season, it's likely that the game will not be made up.

Sunday's game between the GCL Twins and the GCL Red Sox was suspended in the fifth inning due to rain. It will be completed on August 1, 2008 and played through 9 regular innings. The regularly schedule game for August 1 will be a seven inning affair. Game time for the resumption of the game is 11:00 AM.

Angelo Sanchez took the start for the Twins and allowed 2 runs on 3 hits and a pair of walks while fanning eight.

Aaron Hicks was 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple, a run and a RBI. Mike Gonzales was 2-for-2 with a RBI as the designed hitter.

Tyler Ladendorf, Javier Brown, and Jonathan Goncalves were all 1-for-2; Ladendorf with a run, Goncalves with a run and run batted in.

Juan Sanchez was 1-for-3 with a run.

Mother Nature claims two

Fort Myers at Daytona - canceled

Saturdays doubleheader between the Fort Myers Miracle and the Daytona Cubs as been canceled due to wet grounds and unplayable field conditions.

Because the two teams do not meet again this season, they will not be made up.

The Miracle return home to face the St. Lucie Mets, and will (hopefully) leave the rain in Daytona.

Invest 94 remains just to the south of Cuba, packing 40 MPH winds and drawing most of the rain to it. It is moving west, toward Panama, at 17 miles per hour.

Sunday is 70's night at the Bill as well as Cape Coral Breeze night. Tampa Bay running back Earnest Graham, a Cape Coral-Mariner High School graduate, will take batting practice and sign autographs before the Fort Myers Miracle's game at Hammond Stadium on Sunday.

The Fort Myers native is making an appearance at Hammond Stadium, on behalf of his non-profit organization Earnest Giving. Earnest Giving, which in part supports Big Brothers, Big Sisters, was founded in 2007 with a commitment to assisting young people achieve their goals and grow into productive adults.

New Britain 3 at New Hampshire 6

A 3-run eighth inning put the game between the New Britain Rock Cats and the New Hampshire Fisher Cats out of reach for the Rock Cats. Kyle Aselton took his 4th loss of the season.

Aselton walked Scott Campbell in the bottom of the 1st, then gave up a home run to David Smith, his fifth of the season, that went over the right field wall.

New Britain answered back with Felix Molina doubling, then coming home on a Drew Butera single. It would be all the Rock Cats could get off New Hampshire's Brandon Magee, who went on to work 7 innings, scattering 4 hits and a pair of walks while fanning 7.

Aselton's outing wasn't bad, but it could have been better. The lefty allowed a pair of doubles, one to Ryan Klosterman, the other to J.P. Arecibia in the bottom of the 5th to make it 3-1 Fisher Cats.

He would be replaced by Ryan Mullins, who worked the final three innings.

Erik Niesen singled in the bottom of the 8th, After Ryan Patterson lined out, Mullins would hit Brian Jeroloman with a pitch. Mullins then unleashed a wild pitch that moved the pair. Jonathan Diaz would go down on strikes before Scott Campbell put his sixth home run of the season over the right field wall to make it 6-1 in favor of New Hampshire.

Brock Peterson and Felix Molina hit back-to-back home runs off Orlando Roman in the bottom of the 9th, but it wouldn't be enough for New Britain to catch the Fishers.

Dustin Martin was 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk and a double, but did not factor in to the scoring. Toby Gardenhire was the 1 hit wonder, going 1-for-4 at the plate.

The two teams finish up the 4-games series Sunday at 1:05 P.M. The Rock Cats return to New Britain Stadium on Monday to host the Reading Phillies for a four game set.

West Michigan 7 at Beloit 11

It is odd for Mike McCardell to give up any runs, let alone five, but that is exactly what happened during a slug fest between the Beloit Snappers and the West Michigan Whitecaps.

Jordan Newton doubled for the Whitecaps off McCardell with one out in the top of the 2nd inning. Hayton Parrott would go down on strikes before McCardell hit Keith Stein with a pitch. Justin Henry's grounder out to center scored Newton, and Brandon Douglas followed it up with a home run out to left, to give West Michigan 4 runs. Ron Bourquin took a walk before Alex Avila flew out to give Beloit a chance to bat.

With two outs on the board in the bottom of the 3rd, Estarlin De Los Santos singled off West Michigan's Paul Nardozzi. Chris Cates then drew a walk. Ben Revere doubled to drive in the pair, cutting the Whitecaps' lead in half.

Mark Dolenc and Ramon Santana would hit back-to-back singles in the bottom of the 4th before Greg Yersich went down on strikes. Allan de San Miguel would get plunked by a pitch to load the bags, and Andrew Schmiesing walked to force in a run. De Lo singles, driving in Santana and Dirty. Andrew Hess replaced Nardozzi at that point and would get Chris Cates to ground out before allowing a double to Revere that cleaned off the bags, making it 7-4 Beloit.

The Whitecaps came charging back with Douglas singling and Bourquin doubling to put two men on. Avila would go down on a sac-fly to score Douglas.

In the bottom of the stanza, Dolenc went down on strikes before Santana was hit by a pitch. Yersich then doubled putting a pair of men in scoring position. Dirty would pop out before Schmiesing walked to load the bags. De Lo would reach on a fielding error by Douglas that scored Santana and Yersich to give the Snappers 9, a four run lead over the Tiger's farm team.

Charles Nolte would take over the mound in the top of the sixth and get two men out before Henry doubled. Douglas would reach on a throwing error by Cates that also brought Henry home, cutting Beloit's lead to three.

The Snappers would lose the recently returned Santana to a leg injury in the 7th inning. Jeanfred Brito would replace Santana as designed hitter, but it was a blow to already heavily injured Snappers squad.

With one out on the board, Henry would single off Blake Martin. Douglas doubled him in to make it 9-7 Beloit.

The Snappers would take advantage of Noah Krol however, with De Lo singling and Cates getting plunked by a pitch to follow him onto base. The pair would advance on Revere's ground out and a wild pitch by Krol saw De Lo across the plate. Deibinson Romero singled to plate Cates before Dolenc poped into a double play to end the inning.

Martin would strike out two of the four batters he faced in the top of the 9th to end the contest.

De Lo was 3-for-5 with 3 runs and a pair of RBIs to lead the team offensively. Santana was right behind him, going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs before his injury. Revere and Romero were both 2-for-5, Revere with 4 RBIs and Romero with 1. Yersich finished off 1-for-4 with a double and a run, and Dolenc was 1-for-5 wit a run.

The Snappers look to sweep the three-game series on Friday at Pohlman Field, first pitch is due at 7:05 central time.

Rain Delay

As of 12:30, the projected start time was 2:00 PM, however weatherunderground.com is showing rain for the remainder of the day. There's been some suggestion that if they have to wait until 9:00 PM at night to get a game in, they'll do it. This strikes me as being totally absurd. (And need I say, I don't recall us ever having to put up with this non-sense when Dave Burke was in charge.)

In any case, it may become moot as the field may end up being unplayable, which is what happened last night.

Soggy Snappers rained out

It seems that the Fort Myers Miracle weren't the the only team in the Twins organization to fall victim to the fury of Nature. The game between the Beloit Snappers and the Cedar Rapids Kernels was canceled due to inclement weather and field conditions. Much like the Miracle, they have only three games left in the first half of the season, so the game will not be made up.

Fans may exchange their ticket to any other regular season home game, except for the June 29th game, which is SOLD OUT.

The Snappers are on the road to finish off the season, starting a 3-game series on Friday against the Quad City River Bandits. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM central time.

DSL Cubs1 1 at DSL Twins 4

A four-run eighth inning broke a shut out game open for the DSL Twins and helped them go on to a 4-1 win over the DSL Cubs1.

Ramon Acosta worked 8 innings on the mound for the DSL Twins allowing only 2 walks to the DSL Cubs1 and striking out 3. He'd fall victim to a fielding error by Felix Caro however, that lead to an unearned run for the Cubs1 in the 5th inning.

Juan Medina would be issued a walk with one out on the board. Albert Hernandez would reach on a force attempt which allowed Medina to move to 3rd. Juan Pena's ground out to would drive in Medina.

Julio Castillo would keep the Twins off board, giving up four hits and 3 walks while striking out 3 over 5 innings. with Roderick Pichardo on the mound for the Cubs1 in the 8th inning, Jean Carlos Mercedes would go yard over the left field fence to tie up the game. It was his first home run of the new season. Eliel Sierra drew a walk before Miguel Coletto replaced Pichardo on the mound.

Caro would single to center which moved Sierra to 3rd. Manuel Soliman reached on a force attempt that allowed Sierra to score the game winning run. Juan Medina would have some problems throwing the ball during a pick off attempt which allowed the runs on base to advance. Jairo Perez then drew a walk to load the bags. A line drive single to Juan Blanco plated Caro and Soliman for the insurance runs.
