Scoreboard for May 12, 2007

Rochester 8 at Buffalo 1

Record 18-11

W: M. Garza (2-2, 3.75); L: A. Miller (4-1, 2.45)
HR: ROC: G. Jones (5).

E: Casilla (2, throw).

From redwings.com: A great pitcher's duel turned into a one-sided affair Saturday afternoon as the Red Wings defeated the Bisons, 8-1. Rochester moved to within a half-game of the first place Bisons, with two more games against Buffalo Sunday and Monday at Frontier Field. For seven innings, Buffalo's Adam Miller and Rochester's Matt Garza were locked in a great pitching battle.

Miller, the Indians #1 draft pick in 2003, made plenty of big pitches. He got the Red Wings to hit into three double plays and allowed just three runs (two earned) while striking out a pair.

Garza, however, was just a bit stronger. The Bisons had runners in scoring position four different innings, but the Twins' first selection in 2005 forced the Herd to strand seven. Garza's most impressive inning might have been his last. After allowing a lead-off double to Ryan Mulhern in the seventh, he struck out Brad Snyder, David Wallace and Ben Francisco in succession to end the threat.

Garza ended with six strikeouts in seven innings to improve his record to 2-2.

Garrett Jones started Rochester's scoring with his fifth home run of the season to lead off the second. The Wings broke open a 3-0 game with a five-run seventh. Matt Moses and Tommy Watkins had back-to-back two-run doubles to highlight the inning.

Julio DePaula pitched a perfect relief inning, and Bobby Korecky allowed a run on two hits in the ninth.

NOTES: 1B Glenn Williams returned to the lineup after missing most of the past two weeks with a shoulder injury. Williams had a hit in four at-bats... 2B Matt Tolbert raised his league-leding average to .393 after hitting a pair of singles in four at-bats...The Bisons have lost three consecutive games for the first time this season.

The game will resume on Sunday beginning at 1:05 in the afternoon and then be followed by the regularly scheduled 9-inning game.

The Rock Cats and Thunder waited one hour and a half before the umpires officially postponed the contest until Sunday.

2B Felix Molina, who has an EL high 16 game hit streak is currently 0-4 in the game. The Rock Cats did win the first two games of the series on Thursday and Friday and remain perfect, 5-0 on the two-city 7-game road trip.

Fort Myers 1 at Brevard County 2

Record 12 - 24

W: J. Wahpepah (3-4, 2.25); L: K. Waldrop (4-2, 2.86); SV: L. Pena (5)
HR: None.

From miraclebaseball.com: Another pitcher’s duel on Saturday night resulted in another Fort Myers Miracle loss as the Brevard County Manatees came from behind to knock off the Miracle 2-1 at Space Coast Stadium. The Manatees sweep the four-game set while the Miracle wrap up the season-long road trip at 2-6.

Both starters looked good again on Saturday night as Manatees starter Derek Miller went six innings allowing just the one Miracle run on six hits. Miller also walked two and struck out nine. Miracle hurler Kyle Waldrop went seven innings giving up two runs on just four hits while also fanning nine.

No one could cross the plate through the first five innings until the Miracle struck in the sixth. Whit Robbins led off with a walk and moved to second on a one-out sacrifice bunt from Edward Ovalle. Javi Sanchez would follow Ovalle with a ground ball to third that should have ended the inning. Instead, Manatees third baseman Mat Gamel would commit his fifth error of the series, a throwing error to first, allowing Sanchez to reach and Robbins to score from second.

However, the Miracle lead was short-lived as the Manatees put their only two runs up on the board in the seventh. A one-out walk to Angel Salome and a double down the right-field line by Gamel would put runners at second and third with one out. Cole Gillespie knocked in the first run with his single to left while Mike Bell reached on a fielder’s choice, beating out a relay throw from Toby Gardenhire at second base on a potential inning ending double play.

For the second-straight game, the Miracle out-hit the hosts 6-4 on the night. Saturday night marked the 15th one-run game for the Miracle this season as they fall to a 7-8 in contests decided by a single run.

The entire Florida State League will enjoy a day off on Sunday before cranking back up Monday night. The Miracle will welcome the Clearwater Threshers to Hammond Stadium on Monday night to begin a three-game set beginning at 7 p.m. Monday is “Red Hat Society Night” along with a Potts’ Sports CafĂ© “Miracle Monday Club” night.

Note: Alex Smit's sore foot is in fact a twisted ankle. He is expected to miss two to three more starts.
