Dragons sweep Snappers

Mike Tarsi allowed 5 runs on 10 hits and a walk while striking out six to take the loss for the Beloit Snappers who could quite get enough out of their late inning rally to overcome the Dayton Dragons.

Ozzie Lewis doubled in the top of the 2nd and Andrew Schmiesing doubled him in one out later to put the Snappers on the board first. After that it would be all Dragons for a while.

Logan Parker doubled in the bottom of the stanza and, after Jason Bour was called out on strikes, Angel Cabrera singled him in.

The bottom of the third brought a double from Zach Cozart, who was driven in by Neftali Soto's line drive single to put the Dragons on top by one.

Devin Mesoraco doubled to lead off the bottom of the 4th, and Parker singled him to 3rd. Angel Cabrera's grounder to left brought in Mesoraco, and a walk to Brandon Menchaca loaded the bags. Cozart went down on strikes, Soto singled to drive in Parker and Cabrera, making it 5-1 Dayton.

Enerio Del Rosario replaced Matthew Klinker on the mound for the Dragons in the top of the 7th, and would take a couple of quick ground outs. Mark Dolenc singled then stole 2nd. A throwing error by Bour moved him to 3rd , while a second error, this one by Parker, allowed Jeanfred Brito to reach and Dolenc to score. Chris Cates and Ben Revere hit back-to-back singles to score first Brito and then Cates. Deibinson Romero would reach on a fielding error that also sent Revere to 3rd, but the Dragons brought in Henry Arias to get the last out and the Snappers would get no more.

Schmiesing would go 2-for-4 with a double and a run, while Cates and Revere were 2-for-5 each, Cates with a run and Revere with a run scored. Brito and Lewis were both 1-for-4 with a run, Lewis with a double and Brito with a walk. Dolenc finished up 1-for-3 with a run.

That does it as the Dragons sweep the series. The Snappers now take a day off for MLB's All-Star game. They return to action on Wednesday at Pohlman Field, where they will host the West Michigan Whitecaps for a 3-game series. First pitch is due out at 7:00 PM.

Greeneville 3 at Elizabethton 5

The Elizabethton Twins were back in the win column, thanks in part to a stellar effort by Aussie starter Brad Tippett, who worked seven innings, scattering 6 hits and walk while striking out 8.

Jon Waltenbury got things started off when he when yard out to right center field, his 3 of the year, in the bottom of the first inning.

Adam Severino took a walk to open the bottom of the 3rd, and James Beresford singled. Dominic De La Osa singled to drive in Severino, while Beresford came home on a balk.

Juan Richardson singled in the bottom of the fourth and was plated by Angel Morales follow up double.

Patrick Urckfitz would replaces Henry Villar in the bottom of the sixth, and would still be on the mound in the seventh when Morales reached on a throwing error, then advanced to 2nd on a balk. Severino would go down on strikes, but Beresford drew a walk. De La Osa ground into a force out that took Morales out at 3rd, but Nick Romero's line drive would plate Beresford for the E-Twins five.

Danny Rondon worked the 8th for the E-Twins and gave way to Mark Hamburger in the 9th. With one out on the board, Hamburger gave up walks to Kody Hinze and Ebert Romero. Federico Hernandez ground into a force out that took Rosario out at 2nd, but a wild pitch by Hamburger advanced Hernandez. Devon Torrence then walked to fill the bases. Kyle Miller walked, forcing in a run, while Jose Alluve singled to plate two more. Hamburger finally got Ricardo Bonfante to pop put to end the contest.

Everyone in the line up had at least a single, except for Sevarino. No one had a multi-hit games.

The two teams rematch tomorrow with the first pitch due at 7:00 PM, one of the very few games being played on All-star Tuesday.

Elizabethton's Shooter Hunt was named the Appalachian League Pitcher of the Week for the week ended July 13. Hunt made the most of his five innings against Johnson City Friday, striking out 10 Cardinals and allowing no hits in his second start of the season. Hunt is still working on his endurance, but he hasn't done too badly as a starter, as he's yet to give up a hit in eight innings while recording 16 strikeouts.

GCL Pirates double up GCL Twins in Bradenton

The GCL Pirates came out the winners after a 7 inning pitcher's duel, using a 3 run seventh inning to take the lead and hang on for the win.

Brandon Holden took the starts for the Pirates, working four inning and limiting the GCL Twins to only 3 hits while striking out 2. Alex Curry would have the mound for the Twins.

Jack Cunningham would take his second home run of the season off Curry in the bottom of the first, going over the center field fence. It would be the only run Curry would allow, and one of only two hits he'd give up over six innings while fanning 4.

Still it put the Pirates on the board. The Twins were unable to crack reliever Serguey Linares either, who worked the next two innings allowing only one hit while striking out one.

Christopher Aure replaced Linares in the top of the 7th, and walked Anderson Hidalgo. Hidalgo would be replaced by the speedier Juan Sanchez as a pinch runner, and a wild pitch would see Sanchez to 3nd. Jakub Hajtmar singled to plate Sanchez, and would then steal 2nd. Brandon Roberts walked and Danny Ortiz followed that up with a single, but Hajtmar would be taken out at home on the throw ending the inning.

Jose Mijares replaced Curry on the mound and Herbert Lara replaced Brandon Roberts, who was playing on a AA rehab assignment, in the line up. Cunningham doubled off Mija and moved to 3rd Alex Vargas ground bunt single. Miguel Mendez then reached on a fielder's choice, but a throwing error by Mija allowed Cunningham to score and Vargas to advance to 3rd. Victor Sanches and Andury Acevedo would both go down on ground outs before Edwin Roman single to drive in Vargas and Mendez, helped in part by a throwing error by Ortiz in left field.

Tyler Ladendorf took a walk to lead off the top of the 8th, and following a pair of outs that moved Ladendorf to second, Danny Rohlfing doubled Ladendorf in. Sanchez and Hajtmar both walked to load up the bags, at which time the Pirates called for a pitching change. Matthew Foust replaced Aure and would get Jon Goncalves to ground into a force out, stranding the men.

Ladendorf would walk in the top of the ninth with two outs on the board and Mike Gonazales would double, but Hyeong-rok Choi would ground out to end the inning, and the contest.

Gonzales wwas 2-for-4 with a double, while Choi was 2-for-5. Rohlfing had a double and a RBI, Hajtmar a single and a run scored. Roberts went 1-for-2 with a walk, and Ortiz was the one hit wonder of the game.

The GCL Twins were to take on the GCL Orioles at the Lee County Sportsplex on All-star Tuesday for a 10:00 AM game, but that contest has been RAINED OUT! Despite the two game losing streak, the Twins are 14-7 in first place in the South Division, two games ahead of the GCL Red Sox.

DSL Diamondback/Reds 1 at DSL Twins 11

The DSL Twins used an offensive first inning outburst against the DSL Diamondbacks/Reds to put them in a hole from which they would never recover. The Twins would crank out 11 runs on 12 hits over the course of the contest.

Pedro Guerra (no relation to Deolis) took the start for the DSL Twins. He'd allow a home run to Henry Rodrigues coming out of the gate, a fly ball over the right field fence. That would be all the Dia-Reds would get out of him though, as he went on to work seven innings, allowing only 2 more hits and a walk while striking out seven.

Ramon Almonte did not fair so well for the Dia-Reds. Danny Santana took a walk, then stole second. Jhonatan Arias advanced Santana to 3rd on a ground out, and a fielding error by Adonys Canelo at short allowed Santana to score and Jean Carlos Mercedes to reach. Oswaldo Arcia doubled to plate Mercedes, but he'd be taken out at second. Manuel Soliman and Jairo Rodriguez took back-to-back walks and another walk to Yorby Martinez loaded up the bags. Juan Blanco singled in Soliman and Rodriguez before Carlos Tineo came in to replace Almonte. Wilfy Gil singled out to left to bring in Martinez and Blanco. He'd then steal second and Santana would take a walk before Arias flew out to end the inning.

Despite a number of walks by Tineo in the second inning - 3 plus a wild pitch - the Twins would be kept off the board. Marcos Molina replaced Tineo on the mound to get Blanco to fly out to end the inning with the bases loaded.

Santana walked with one out on the board in the bottom of the 3rd, then stole 2nd. Following a ground out to Arias, Mercedes reached on a fielding error that also scored Santana. A wild pitch by Molina moved Mercedes to 2nd and Arcia would double him in. Soliman then traded places with Arcia, with his 5th double of the season. A single by Rodriguez would plate Soliman, making it 10-1 Twins.

Blanco doubled to lead off the bottom of the 4th then moved to 3rd on Gil's line drive single. Santana then singled to load the bags. One out later, Mercedes ground into a force out that plated Blanco for the Twins final run.

Rodriguez finished up 2-for-2 with 3 walks, a run and a run batted in. Blanco was 3-for-5 with a pair of runs and a pair of runs scored. Arcia and Gil were 2-for-5, Arcia with a pair of doubles, a pair of RBIs and a run, and Gil with a pair of runs scored. Santana and Soliman were both 1-for-3 with 3 runs each, Santana with 3 walks and Soliman with a double, a walk and a RBI.

The Twins visit the DSL Cubs on Tuesday for a 10:30 AM Dominican time game.

Snappers drop pair to Dragons

When we left this game in progress, the Beloit Snappers were winning by one but the Dayton Dragons needed to finish off their inning. Charles Nolte would come in to resume the game and would get Devin Mesoraco to ground out to end the seventh.

He'd give up a home run however, to Logan Parker in the bottom of the 8th, tying the game up again.

Greg Yersich would go yard off Jeff Jeffords for the Snappers in the top of the 9th to put Beloit on top again.

But the game was not over. Zach Cozart, Neftali Soto and Jolbert Cabrera singled to load up the bases on Nolte. After Denis Phipps and Mesoraco both lined out, Parker singled out to right to drive in Cozart and Soto to end the game with the Dragons on top.

Yersich was 4-for-5 with a run, and 3 RBIs. Mark Dolenc was 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs, while Ben Revere and Estarlin De Los Santos were both 2-for-5, De Lo with a triple and 2 RBIs.

Game two should have been a shortened affair, but was also played to 9 as the game was tied at the end of 7.

Steve Hirschfeld would make the start for the Snappers, while Danny Guerrero handled the pitching chores for the Dragons.

Logan Parker would take a walk off Hirschfeld in the bottom of the 2nd, and would be doubled in by Jolbert Cabrera to put the Dragons on the board.

Mark Dolenc doubled in the top of the 3rd for Beloit and following a pop out by Jeanfred Brito, Estarling De Los Santos singled to move him to 3rd. Ben Revere's line drive to right plated Dolenc, while Deibinson Romero's grounder to left brought in De Lo to put Beloit on top.

With two outs on the board in the top of the fourth, Dolenc singled, then stole 2nd. Brito then doubled to drive in Dolenc. The speedy Brito would be taken out at 3rd however as he tried to stretch the hit for a triple, retiring the side.

Cabrera would reach on Romero's fielding error in the bottom of the stanza, and move to second on Denis Phipps ground ball single. Cabrera then advanced to 3rd on Michael McKennon's fly out. Jason Bour would go down swinging and Phipps would steal 3rd. A throwing error by Allan de San Miguel allowed Cabrera to score.

Neftali Soto tripled and Parker singled him to tie up the game in the bottom of the fifth.

Lee Martin took over for Hirschfeld in the bottom of the sixth and allowed only 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 4. Jonathan Conatser replaced Guerrero for the 8th and the 9th, and allowed only 1 hit while fanning 2 over that time frame.

Danny Hernandez was brought in for the bottom of the ninth for Beloit. He'd get Jason Bour to fly out, then gave up a home run to Angel Cabrera which finished off the contest.

Dolenc was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs and a double in the contest. Brito (1-for-4) also had a double as well as an RBI while De Lo, Revere, Romero and Ozzie Lewis all had singles.

The teams rematch on Monday for a 6:00 PM game before breaking for the All-star game on Tuesday.

DDN: Notes

Class A Beloit right-hander Mike McCardell was named the Twins Minor League pitcher of the month for June. McCardell went 4-0 in five starts while posting a 2.45 ERA and 0.87 WHIP.

A native of West Chester, Pa, the 6'5", 220 lb right hander was the Twins sixth rough pick in the 2007 first year player draft. He was named the Appalachian player of the week from August 20 to the 26th in 2007, and named to Baseball America's post season Rookie All-star team.

Elizabethton 1 at Johnson City 3

The game between the Elizabethton Twins and the Johnson City Cardinals was suspended by rain. Johnson City was leading 3-1 at the time the game was halted.

The contest will be continued on July 20th at Johnson City starting at 6:05 PM ET. They will play the game in progress through nine innings, the second, regularly scheduled game will be shortened to 7-innings.

Soggy Miracle split twin bill with Hammerheads

Anibal Sanchez, on rehab, and Oswaldo Sosa matched each other pitch-for-pitch in game one of the double header Sunday that got underway at 3:15 after a 3+ hour rain delay.

Sanchez would give up 3 hits and a pair of bases on ball, while fanning 6 over 5.2 innings, while Sosa gave up 1 hit and 3 walks and struck out 2 over five.

Neither team found much to hit at. But who needs bats anyway?

Edward Ovalle would get plunked by a pitch to get on base. Juan Portes moved him to second on a sac-bunt and he'd steal 3rd. A throwing error by catcher Chris Hatcher put the ball in the outfield while he was trying to catch Ovalle, and put Ovalle over the plate for the only run in the contest.

Yangervis Solarte was 1-for-1 with a walk, while Wilson Ramos (1-for-3) and Danny Berg (1-for-2) shared the one hit wonder of the game title.

Carlos Gutierrez made his professional debut, working 1 inning and allowing 1 hit while striking out 2. Blair Erickson finished the game, striking out 3 in the final inning.

While there were more hits in game two, there was 1 few runs for the Miracle at least, which was not good.

Graham Taylor worked all 7 innings for the Hammerheads, scattering six hits over that period and striking out one.

Matt Fox worked six for the Miracle. In the top of the 3rd, Justin Webb took a single off of Fox, but Danny Lehmann made a successful pick off attempt at 1st with a throw to Danny Berg. Emilio Ontiveros would fly out to put two outs on the board. Scott Cousins and Ernesto Manzanillo then hit back-to-back singles and Logan Morrison doubled the pair in to put two runs on the board for Jupiter.

That would prove to be all they need, but Spencer Steedley came in for the seventh inning.

The Midwest League All-star walked Gregory Burns, who then stole second. Chris Dunn singled to score burns and moved to 2nd on a throwing error by Steedley. Webb singled and Ontiveros walked to load the bags. A wild pitch by Steedley put Dunn over the plate and Cousins would go yard over the right center field wall to bring in Webb and Ontiveros. Ernesto Manzarillo singled before Jose Lugo was brought into to replace Steedley. Lugo would allow a single to Morrison and a double to Vasil Spanos to score Manzarillo. He'd then walk Spike McDougal before Gregory Burns flew out to retire the side.

Eli Tintor and Yangervis Solarte attempted to rally the team by hitting back-to-back singles in the bottom of the 7th, but with Edward Ovalle already out, Danny Santiesteban ground into a double play, finishing the contest and sending the water logged crowd of 531 - or at least those that remained after 3 hours of rain delay - home.

Tintor finished up 2-for-3 while Berg, Ovalle, Solarte and Garrett Olson all had a single a piece.

The final game of the series is Monday night, mother nature permitting. Cole Devries (7-6, 2.45) will take the start for the Miracle.

Speaking of Cole Devries, the Fort Myers right handed pitcher is the Twins Minor League Player of the Week for July 5-11. Devries, 23, went 1-0 with a four-hit complete game win over Vero Beach. In 17 games (16 starts) this season he is 7-6 with a 2.45 ERA.

Devries, who is from Eden Prairie, MN, signed with the Twins August 22, 2006 as a non-drafted free agent out of the University of Minnesota. He made his professional debut last season with Beloit and went 9-5 with a 3.41 ERA.

The World Team took a 3-0 victory from Team USA in the Future's Game on Sunday. Former Miracle Luke Hughes started at 3rd base for the World Team.

Hughes went 0-for-2, with a lineout to center field and a strikeout in the contest. Denard Span who was supposed to play for Team USA as well as for Team USA in the Olympics remained on call up to the Minnesota Twins, making it unlikely that he will make his Olympic date as well. {Strib: Luke Hughes}

THE WEEK THAT WAS: The Miracle had a winning week with four wins in seven games. Fort Myers is currently tied with Lakeland for second place in the FSL West, three games behind division-leading Dunedin.

WHO'S HOT, WHO'S NOT: 1B Daniel Berg has been hitting a decent clip of late. The native of Glen Iris, Australia, has eight hits in his last 26 plate appearances through nine games for a .308 average. ... LF Juan Portes has only reached base safely five times in his last 10 games through 35 at-bats for a .143 average.

PLAYER TO WATCH: LHP Jose Lugo has been money in the bank in recent days coming out of the Miracle bullpen. The native of the Dominican Republic has not allowed an earned run in his last 9 1/3 innings pitched through four appearances. In that span he has struck out eight and walked one.

PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK: C Wilson Ramos drove in four of the Miracle's six runs on two hits in a 6-1 win at Vero Beach on July 9. The native of Venezuela homered to left in his second at-bat to put Fort Myers up, 2-0. In the sixth, Ramos belted a three-run homer to center for 5-1 lead.

Holy Johnson Batman! Wings split weekend games with Bulls

Saturday: Rochester 9 at Durham 8 (13 innings)

When we left our heroes last, Randy Ruiz was attempting to equal Omir Santos 21 game hitting streak from earlier this season. Without much ado, let me tell you that in fact, he did accomplish this feat, going 2-for-4 on Saturday with a double, a walk, a run and a run batted in.

The Rochester Red Wings took a win as well, which is always nice, although it took them 13 innings to overcome the Durham Bulls.

Danny Graves took the start for the Wings, and Durham took advantage of him early. After getting Dan Johnson to fly out, he'd walk Chris Richard, then advance him to 2nd on a wild pitch. Joel Guzman ground out, but Nathan Haynes singled to scored Richard. Haynes then stoled 2nd and scored on Andy Cannizaro's fly ball to center. Mike DeFelice knocked a grounder to right to follow Cannizaro on base and Fernando Perez's grounder brought in Cannizaro, due to a throwing error by Graves, who had fielded Perez's hit. Jon Weber then reached on a catching error by Ruiz allowing DeFelice to score. Weber would steal 2nd before Elliot Johnson struck out swinging to retire Durham with a 4-0 lead.

Dan Johnson then homered off Graves in the bottom of the 3rd to give the Bulls a 5-0 lead.

Jason Pridie singled out to center, then stole 2nd base in the top of the fourth. Following a fly out to Trevor Plouffe that moved him to 3rd, Darnell McDonald ground out, plating Pridie to put the Twins-to-be on the board.

Haynes tripled in the bottom fo the sixth and Mike DiFelice sacrificed him in one out later. A follow up single to Perez would do it for Graves, who was replaced by Carmen Cali, who got Weber to strike out to end the inning. Graves left after allowing 6 runs, 4 earned on 9 hits and a pair of walks while striking out 5 over 5.2 innings.

Meanwhile, Durham's Jeffrey Niemann and Dale Thayer gave up only a pair of hits and 4 walks to the Wings over the first eight innings. Things were looking bleak with the Wings down by five coming into the ninth.

Scott Dohmann replaced Thayer on the mound and allowed a lead off double to McDonald. Jones would go down swinging, but Ruiz singled out to center to plate McDonald. Howie Clark singled and Matt Macri doubled to bring in Ruiz putting another run on the board before Sergie Santos flew out to left. Ryan Jorgensen then took a walk and was replaced by Tommy Watkins as a pinch runner. Jason Pridie then hit a grand slam to put the Wings on top by one.

Bobby Korecky was called in to close out the game, and allowed a single to Perez instead. Weber's sac bunt moved him to 2nd and Elliot Johnson's ground out pushed him to 3rd. Dan Johnson then singled him in to tie up the game again. Richard would reach on a fielding error by Ruiz before Joel Guzman was called out on strikes.

Pridie homered in the 11th to put the Wings on top again, but the Bulls came right back with Perez singling and moving to 2nd on Weber's sac bunt. Elliot Johnson would go down on strikes before Ricky Barrett went in to replace Korecky. Dan Johnson took a single off him to score Perez, tying up the game again.

Howie Clark would single in the 13th and move to 3rd on Matt Macri's sac bunt. Calvin Medlock would replace Durham's Kurt Birkins on the mound and Santos would double off of him to plate Clark for the game winning run. This time, the Bull stayed down after Weber was ejected for arguing a called strike out with the umpire and took Bulls Manager Charlie Montoyo with him. Elliot Johnson would double, but Dan Johnson ground out and Richard flew out to end the inning and the game.

Pridie lead the team, going 4-for-7 with 3 runs, a pair of homers and 5 RBIs. Clark was 2-for-5 with a walk and a pair of runs.

Ruiz’s hitting streak is tied for the longest in Triple-A this season. (The only Red Wings hitting streak longer is outfielder Luis Mercedes' 22-game hitting streak that stretched over two seasons. Mercedes had a 21-game hitting streak August 4-24, 1991 when he was suspended by International League for the last 11 games of the 1991 season for throwing his helmet and hitting Syracuse third baseman Tom Quinlan in the mouth during the August 24th game. Mercedes would extend his hitting streak to 22-games on Opening Day April 9, 1992.

Sunday: Rochester 3 at Durham 9

Brian Duensing fell to 5-10 on the season after allowing 4 runs, earned, on six hits and 4 walks while fanning 4 over 4 innings. The Durham Bulls were equal opportunity opponents though and also took advantage of Casey Daigle and Carmen Cali in their 9-3 drubbing of the Rochester Red Wings.

Fernando Perez tripled in the bottom of the 1st then came home, one out later, on Joel Guzman's sac fly to put the Bulls on the board.

The Wings answered right back however, with Trevor Plouffe singling and moving to 2nd on Jeff Christy's ground out. Tommy Watkins then singled to plate Plouffe, tying up the game.

Dan Johnson (hereinafter referred to as D.J.) took a walk in the bottom of the 3rd and Chris Richard singled to move him to 2nd. Following an Andy Cannizaro fly out, Elliot Johnson (E.J.) doubled out to left to score D.J. Nathan Haynes sacrificed in Richard, and a Josh Johnson (J.J.) single plated E.J.

Randy Ruiz extended his hitting streak to 22 games, doubling in the top of the fourth then moving to 3rd on a wild pitch by Mike Prochaska. Matt Macri's ground out would push him over the plate, to make it 4-2 Bulls.

Pridie would homer - this 8th of the season and 3rd in two days - over the right field wall in the top of the 5th to make it 4-3 Bulls.

Durham didn't want the upstart Wings to get any bright ideas about a rally though, so Richard took a walk off Daigle in the bottom of the 5th then, one out later, moved to 3rd on E.J.'s single. Haynes would ground out to score Richard before J.J. struck out swinging.

The bottom of the seventh would see Cannizaro reach with 2 outs on the board on a fielding error at third by Trevor Plouffe. E.J. then reached on Sergio Santos fielding error. Carmen Cali would be called in to pitch and E.J. would steal 2nd. Haynes then singled to plate Cannizaro and E.J., making it 7-3 Bulls.

Perez would single and steal 2nd in the bottom of the 8th, and Weber singled to move him to 3rd. Philip Humber was called in to replace Cali and got Guzman to ground out before he intentionally walked D.J. Richard ground into a force out that allowed Perez and Weber to score and took D.J. out at second. Cannizaro would strike out to retire the side.

This time, there would be no ninth inning heroics, although Dale Thayer did allow a double to Santos before getting Plouffe to fly out to end the contest.

Matt Macri and Jeff Christy were the only two Wings without at least a single in the game, while Santos was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double.

Ruiz’s hitting streak is the longest in Triple-A this season. With Saturday’s win the Red Wings moved to 9-6 in extra-inning games this season. Rochester has won six of their last seven extra-inning games and the 15 extra-inning games played are the most of any team in the IL.

Minnesota Twins shortstop Adam Everett's scheduled rehab stint with the Class A Ft. Myers Miracle began Sunday, with three at-bats in the first game of a doubleheader. The infielder is scheduled to play in three games during the Miracle’s upcoming home stand, then play a couple of games for the Red Wings in Rochester.

The teams now head into the All-star break. Rochester's next game is July 17th when they kick off an 8-game homestand with a four-game series against the Norfolk Tides at Frontier Field. First pitch is due out at 7:05 PM.
