Toledo 11 at Rochester 9

Record 16-10

W: J. Karnuth (1-2, 3.79); L: J. DePaula (2-3, 3.38)
HR: TOL: M. Hessman (8), R. Raburn (7).

From redwingsbaseball.com: Toledo staged a five-run ninth inning rally, in taking an 11-9 decision over the Red Wings Wednesday night at Frontier Field. The Mud Hens rally offset a seven-run rally by the Wings earlier in the game. Mike Hessman and Ryan Raburn each drove in four runs for Toledo. Matt Tolbert upped his league-leading average to .384 with a three-hit, one RBI night for the Wings, who also had a three-hit game from Matthew LeCroy. Alexi Casilla had two hits and three RBI for Rochester.

The Mud Hens started their ninth inning rally against Mike Venafro, who hit two batters before getting the first out of the inning. Julio DePaula came into the game, having not allowed an earned run since April 14; DePaula was rocked by Raburn's homer to left field, then Hessman's two-run shot to left which locked up the win for the Hens.

Lefty starter Dave Gassner allowed five runs and six hits in two 2/3 innings. Jack Hannahan hit a single to start off the top of the second inning, but he was caught stealing two batters later by catcher Jose Morales. Dane Sardinha walked, then scored on Brent Clevlen's single to right field.

Toledo's hitting onslaught continued in the third inning. Ramon Santiago was hit by a pitch and then advanced to second on a wild pitch, leading to a run-scoring double by Chris Shelton to make the score 2-0. With two outs the Hens increased their lead after Hessman hit a two-run double. Sardinha followed with an RBI single to make it 5-0. Toledo tacked on another run in the fourth inning when Raburn hit a sacrifice fly to give the Hens a six-run lead. Jason Miller relieved Gassner with two outs in the third and struck out Clevlen to end the inning.

The Red Wings started their comeback against Toledo starter Dennis Tankersley in the fifth inning, when Tolbert and Denard Span hit consecutive singles with two outs. Casilla followed with a two-run double to put the Wings on the board, making it 6-2.

In the sixth inning the Wings provided plenty of offense. Matt Moses helped trim the deficit by hitting an RBI single to score LeCroy. Tommy Watkins then followed with a run-scoring single to left field to make it 6-4. Tolbert followed with another RBI single, and two batters later Casilla walked with the bases loaded to tie the game. Lew Ford's two-run bloop single to center gave the Wings their first lead at 8-6, and Jose Morales beat out an infield hit after sliding head-first into first base to make it 9-6. Carmen Cali came in for Miller at the start of the sixth inning and retired all three batters faced, going one 1/3 innings and allowing no hits.

In the top of the seventh Wings pitcher Ricky Barrett came in and forced hot-hitting Hessman to ground into a double play to end the inning after the Hens were threatening to score with Raburn on first.

Fort Myers 0 at Brevard County 1

Record 12 - 21

W: J. Wahpepah (2-4, 2.50); L: J. Hill (0-2, 5.87)
HR: None.

From miraclebaseball.com: In a ball game Wednesday night where the slightest mistake would cost someone a win, it was Miracle reliever Josh Hill who made that slight mistake walking four Brevard County Manatees in the bottom of the ninth giving the Manatees a 1-0 win over the Miracle. Wednesday snapped a brief two-game winning streak and marks the ninth time this season the Miracle have been held scoreless.

In the Manatees ninth, Hill was able to retire lead off man Alcides Escobar as Steve Tolleson at second came up with his third spectacular catch of the night. Tolleson robbed Escobar of a hit with a full-extension catch over his shoulder. Hill would then load the bases with three straight walks to Lorenzo Cain, Chris Errecart and Mat Gamel before inducing Cole Gillespie to fly out to center for out number two. Bell would then follow taking four-straight balls to win it for the Manatees.

Both starters on Wednesday night pitched lights out at Space Coast Stadium. Miracle starter Oswaldo Sosa went seven innings, scattering three hits while striking out four. Brevard starter Will Inman was equal to the task tossing seven innings as well, allowing four hits and fanning six.

The Miracle had two occasions on Wednesday night with a runner at second and two outs, but failed to score. In the loss, the Miracle had just three runners reach second, while no base runner made it to third.

Game two of the four-game series will take place Thursday night at 7 p.m. With Alexander Smit on the 7-day disabled list with right-foot soreness, RHP Zach Ward (0-4, 3.24) will get the spot start for the Miracle. The Manatees will send LHP Steve Garrison (1-2, 4.60) to the Space Coast Stadium mound on Thursday.

I think this goes back to the conversation we were having on the bench Sunday about "Which would you rather do, walk in a run or give up a big bomb?" I guess we know Hiller's answer...but really, they're not your dogs, they don't need to be walked!

Notes: The Fort Myers Miracle announce two roster moves today. The single A-affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, have placed pitcher Alexander Smit on the disabled list and have added former major league infielder Luis Ugueto to the active roster.

The 28-year-old Ugueto joins the Miracle as a player/coach. Ugueto (oo-GAY-to) has appeared in 74 major league games with the Seattle Mariners. The switch-hitting second baseman has a career major league average of .214 with one home run and two RBI.

The native of Caracas, Venezuela was originally signed by the Florida Marlins as an amateur free agent in 1996, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates from Florida in the 2001 rule 5 draft. He made his debut with the Mariners on April 3, 2002.

Ugueto has not played organized professional baseball since 2004. He signed with the Twins as a non-drafted free agent on January 29, 2007 and was added from the Twins extended spring training roster.

Smit was placed on the seven day disabled list due to soreness in his right foot. Smit’s move is retroactive to Sunday, May 6. The left-hander is 0-2 with an ERA of 5.67. The Eindhoven, Netherlands native is the first Miracle player to be placed on the disabled list this season.
