Scoreboard for June 8, 2007

Rochester 3 at Indianapolis 0

Record 30-27

W: N. Blackburn (2-1, 2.55); L: J. Van Benschoten (6-4, 2.73)
HR: None.

E: Tolbert (7, fielding).

From redwingsbaseball.com: Nick Blackburn was outstanding for the second straight start, tossing a complete-game four hitter to lead the Red Wings over Indianapolis 3-0 Friday night.

Trent Oeltjen hit a two-run single for the Wings in the third inning, after Rochester picked up an unearned run in the first against John Van Benschoten (6-4). Blackburn, who got his first Triple-A victory Sunday, made it two wins in a row - and two straight dominant starts. After taking a perfect game into the sixth inning Sunday and finishing with an eight-inning, four-hit, one unearned run performance, Blackburn shut down the red-hot Indians Friday. He scattered three singles over eight innings, finally giving up a double to Yurendell DeCaster with two outs in the ninth. But Blackburn got a fly ball to end the game, giving him a nine-inning, four hit, no walk and four strikeout worksheet.

The Red Wings snapped a three-game losing streak, while ending Indianapolis' winning streak at six.

NOTES: Alexi Casilla had two hits for the Wings...The Rochester pitching staff leads the league with six complete games; no other club had more than two entering play Friday...On May 11 while pitching for Double-A New Britain, Blackburn beat Trenton (7.1 IP, 3H, 1 R, 0 ER) allowing only one hit over the first seven innings.

Bowie 8 at New Britain 11

Record: 31-24

W: K. Waldrop (1-3, 6.21); L: F. Deza (1-5, 6.43); SV: J. Martinez (2)
HR: BOW: V. Majewski (3), E. Whiteside (3). NBR: G. Guzman (5).

E: Molina, F (11, fielding).

From rockcats.com: New Britain broke out for 17 hits and used two five-run innings to down Bowie 11-8 as Rock Cats’ starter Kyle Waldrop picked up his first career Double-A win.

Luke Hughes led the way for the Rock Cats, as he continued his hot streak at the plate with three hits, including two doubles, two runs, and an RBI. Hughes is batting .429 in his last 11 games and his average for the season is now .351. Garrett Guzman also had a big night with three hits, two runs, and four RBI. Felix Molina and Brain Buscher added three hits with a double apiece. Both Molina and Buscher had an RBI and a run.

Waldrop (1-3) wasn’t spectacular in the victory, surrendering seven runs on six hits – including two home runs – through six innings. He struck out seven while walking none, but also hit two batters and had a wild pitch.

Bowie jumped out to an early lead off Waldrop. Leadoff batter Oscar Salazar reached base after being hit by a pitch and Jeff Fiorentino followed with a double to center field. Val Majewski (3-for-4, 2 R, 3 RBI) then blasted a three-run shot to center field for a 3-0 BaySox lead.

The Rock Cats cut the score to 3-1 when David Winfree reached base on a throwing error by Salazar and Hughes’ double knocked in Winfree. In the bottom of the third, the ‘Cats broke out their bats for a five-run inning. Buscher started the scoring off with an RBI single. Guzman then delivered a three-run homer to center field that put the Rock Cats ahead. Brandon Roberts added an RBI single for a 6-3 Rock Cats’ lead.

In the top of the fifth, Waldrop hit Luis Hernandez with a pitch and allowed the runner to advance to second on a wild pitch. Paco Figueroa’s single scored Hernandez to cut the Rock Cats lead to 6-4.

The Rock Cats broke out for another five runs in the bottom of the inning, though, to break open the game. Guzman and Winfree started the inning off with back-to-back singles before pitcher Fredy Deza fielded Hughes’ sac bunt and threw the ball away. The error allowed Hughes to reach base and Guzman to score. Salazar then committed another error at third that allowed Kyle Geiger to reach first base safely. With the bases loaded, the Bay Sox sent in reliever Felix Romero, who walked in another run. Molina and Trevor Plouffe hit back-to-back RBI singles. Guzman came to the plate again and delivered an RBI single to round out the inning.

Deza (1-5) lasted four innings, allowing 12 hits and 10 runs (7 ER). Eli Whiteside added a three-run homer for Bowie in the sixth inning. For the Rock Cats, J.P. Martinez notched his second save of the season with one run on two hits in three innings of relief.

Vero Beach 5 at Fort Myers 7

Record 26 - 34

W: E. Morlan (4-2, 2.48); L: J. Gonzalez (2-4, 2.95)
HR: FTM: S. Tolleson (2).

E: Ugueto (9, fielding).

A wild pitch by Jino Gonzalez allowed Caleb Moore and Whit Robbins to cross the plate and save a 7-5 victory for the Fort Myers Miracle after they blew a 5-1 lead in the game.

After rain delayed the start of the game, Steve Tolleson lifed a fly ball over the left field wall about the same time the shuttled lifted off from Cape Canaveral, both leaving visible vapor trails behind.

Erik Lis walked to open the seond inning, and moved to third on an Eddie Ovalle single to left fielder Christopher Cunningham, who overthrew first, allowing Ovalle to move into scoring position. Dwayne White reached on a fielder's choice, but Lis beat the play at the plate.

Ovalle scored on a sac fly by Caleb Moore to make it 2-0 at the bottom of the second. Tolley's homer in the third made it 3-0.

Matthew Devins hit a sac fly to Lis in the fourth that allowed Patrick Cottrell to score and got the Devil Rays on the board.

The end of the top of fourth, a fly out from Neil Walton to Lis also signaled the end of Yohan Pino's start, as he struggled through four innings worth of work. He would be replace by Angel Garcia.

The Twins got one run back, plus in the bottom of the inning, with Dwayne White and Robbins both taking walks and coming home on a Juan Portes Line drive to center.

The Rays picked up two more off Garcia in the six, and two off Gambino...both of which were inherited runners who crossed the plate while Eddie Morlan was on the mound. Morlan recorded both the blown save, and the win, in the game.

Tolleson was 1-for-3 with a walk and a strik out, and Portes, Luis Ugueto, and Ovalle were all 1-for-4. Ugueto struck out once, Ovalle, 3 times.

It's interesting that two of the Miracle's top pitchers, Jay Rainville and Yohan Pino both struggled against this Vero Beach club. Josh Hill (2-2, 2.97) will try his luck tonight against Matt Walker (1-5, 5.40) for the Rays on Little League Appreciation Night.

Fort Myers was out hit 9-4 in the game, this being the second time that Vero Beach has handed the Miracle a win. Which leads to the question: Can you really call it a rally when it was a actually a gift?

Notes: Fort Myers New Press blogger Ed Pelegrino returned from his minor league ballpark tour up north bearing trading cards and pocket schedules, Cape Coral Breeze staff photographer Vandy Major stopped by, and Tony Oliva and Jim Rantz were both in attendance after finishing up at MLB's Ametuer draft in Orlando, Florida. When asked if he'd gotten us anyone good in the draft, Rantz replied "Ask me again in three years."

The Twins went a little pitcher crazy in the later rounds of the draft, taking a total of 24, 21 righties and 3 southpaws, as well as 6 catchers, 5 outfleders, 4 short stops, 2 each of 1st and and 2nd baseman, and one 3rd baseman in rounds 6 through 50. Spencer Steedley, drafted as a first baseman, had a sub-3 era as a A-10 pitcher, and was named to the A-10 All Cenference 1st team as both a fielder and a pitcher. The 6'2" from UNCC is a lefty pitcher. It will be interesting to see if the Twin are content to leave him in the field.

Burlington 3 at Beloit 7

Record 37-22

W: T. Robertson (1-0, 0.75); L: M. Santiago (1-5, 2.93)
HR: BEL: C. Parmelee (6), B. Dinkelman (5).

E: Singleton (10, throw), Santiesteban (7, fielding).

From snappersbaseball.com: The Snappers remained atop the Midwest League Western division with a 7-3 victory over the Burlington Bees Friday night. Beloit’s Tyler Robertson pitched well in his second start for the Snappers, going five innings, striking out six and allowing one unearned run.

Beloit continued to put runs on the board behind the bats of a host of Snappers. Johnny Woodard drove in a pair in the third with a single up the middle. Brian Dinkelman hit a tape measure shot in the Snappers’ half of the six to make it 3-1 in favor of Beloit. Center fielder Chris Parmelee added a solo shot in the seventh. In the eighth, Joe Benson doubled to left, scoring Wilson Ramos and Parmelee to round out the scoring.

Burlington’s Mario Santiago pitched three and two-thirds innings and ended up with his fifth loss of the season.

The Bees scored runs in the top of the ninth for the second consecutive night, but failed to threaten the Snappers lead.
