Record 55 - 47

W: C. Cali (4-0, 2.51); L: T. Taubenheim (4-6, 6.34); SV: B. Korecky (27)
HR: SYR: C. Mottola (12), R. Roberts (6). ROC: B. Buscher (6), D. Span (3).

From redwingsbaseball.com/Milb.com: It was a night of home runs as the Red Wings defeated the Syracuse Chiefs 9-6 Tuesday night at Frontier Field. Denard Span's grand slam in the second inning started the Wings on a two inning scoring streak. Brian Buscher followed in the third with a three-run homer to secure the win. The win moved the Wings to within a half-game of Buffalo for the International League wild card spot.

In his second start for the Wings, pitcher Ryan Mullins began the game by striking out the final two of three Syracuse batters in the first inning.

The Wings took the lead in an exciting second inning. Syracuse Starter Ty Taubenheim started the inning by walking Garrett Jones. Doug Deeds then knocked a line drive down the first base line for a single, moving Jones to third. After Buscher popped out to second base, Tommy Watkins walked to load the bases. After a second out, Span slammed a ball just over the right field wall for a grand slam, the second for the Wings this season, giving the Wings a 4-0 lead.

In the third, Matt Tolbert led off with a base hit. With one out, Jones was walked again placing Tolbert in scoring position. Deeds then singled a line drive to right field plating Tolbert, moving Jones to third, and advancing to second on the throw. With two runners in scoring position, Buscher smacked a ball into the right field bullpen for a three-run home run to double the Wings lead, 8-0.

Syracuse answered back with a home run of their own in the fourth. With one out, Adam Lind hit a ball to centerfield for a base hit. Chad Mottola followed with a two-run homer over left centerfield, bringing the score to 8-2.

The Chiefs cut into the Wings lead as Mullins struggled in the fifth. Russ Adams started the inning by reaching base off an error. He then advanced to third on a single to centerfield by Robinzon Diaz. Adams was brought home off a double to right field by Wayne Lydon. With no outs and two runners in scoring position, Ryan Roberts knocked a hit on a full count pitch for a three-run homer causing Carmen Cali to enter the game, relieving Mullins. Cali started by walking his first batter but was quickly saved by a double-play to second and first. He then struck out the final batter, holding the Wings lead, 8-6.

The Wings increased their lead in the sixth. The inning started with Watkins being walked by relief pitcher Jordan De Jong. This caused Syracuse to make a pitching change and bring in Scott Sauerbeck to face Trent Oeltjen, who, on a full count pitch, knocked a ball to centerfield for a triple, bringing home Watkins. After Span struck out, Oeltjen was tagged out at home by a fielder's choice by Alexi Casilla. Casilla then stole second but was stranded as Tolbert stuck out to end the inning with the score 9-6 Wings.

Julio DePaula entered the game to relieve Cali in the seventh. DePaula allowed one hit and struck out two. He was relieved by Bobby Korecky in the eighth. Korecky, who recorded his 27th save, struck out three and allowed a base hit in the two innings to end the game with the score of 9-6. Cali took the win, improving his record to 4-0.

NOTES: Span came into the game hitting a team-best .500 (6-for-12) with the bases loaded. His total of 19 RBI with the bases full is also tops on the club, with Jones second at 13...5' 3" rookie shortstop Chris Cates reached base in all six of his at-bats and scored four times Tuesday afternoon, as the Class A Beloit Snappers won a wild 12-11 game that went 11 innings. Joe Benson had four hits for the Snappers, who scored six in the bottom of the 12th inning - winning the game on Eli Tintor's 2-RBI single...In game one of Monday's doubleheader LHP Brian Duensing pitched the Red Wings' 11th complete-game of the 2007 season. The 11 complete games are the most by a Red Wings team since 1997 when Rochester had 13 complete-games. Of the 11 complete-games the Red Wings have this season, seven are seven-inning games...So far this season the Red Wings have a 25-26 record away from Frontier Field. If Rochester can finish with a winning road record this season it would be the first time since Red Wings records began in 1979 that Rochester has had back-to-back winning road records. In 2006 the Red Wings had a 37-35 road record, Rochester’s first winning road record since 1993 when the Red Wings finished with a 37-34 record away from Silver Stadium....The International League held a press conference at Frontier Field Tuesday afternoon to announce plans to revive the IL Hall of Fame, part of the league celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2008.

New Britain 2 at Connecticut 6

Record: 47 - 50

W: D. McKae (4-2, 2.97); L: Y. Pino (0-1, 17.18)
HR: None

E: PlouffE (21, missed catch).

From ctdefenders.com: The Connecticut Defenders hosted the New Britain Rock Cats on Tuesday July 24 at Dodd Stadium. What started out as a pitchers duel between the two clubs, unraveled for the Rock Cats down the stretch and the Defenders took advantage to pick up a 6-2 victory.

Rock Cats starter Josh Hill began strong and was dealing out of the gates. Hill retired 11 of the first 12 batters he faced. Defenders starter Dave McKae matched him on the mound to 8 of 9 to start the game. But in the top of the fourth inning, OF Brandon Roberts led off with a double and was sacrificed over to third on a bunt by SS Trevor Plouffe. OF Garrett Guzman followed with an RBI single to right field, scoring Roberts to put the Rock Cats up 1-0 after four full innings.

The Defenders struck back in the bottom of the fifth inning. C Steve Holm led off the inning with a single and eventually came around to score on a bases loaded walk to SS Jake Wald. That tied up the game at 1-1. The tie was short-lived and in the Defenders favor. Hill exited after five full innings and watched things implode on the mound with reliever Yohan Pino. All nine players in the Defenders lineup batted in the inning and Connecticut put up five runs. 3B Simon Klink delivered an RBI single, OF Carlos Sosa came through with a 2-run single and SS Jake Wald laced a 2-run double to complete the scoring effort. Connecticut led 6-1 after six innings.

After McKae was staked to the lead he did not relinquish it. The Rock Cats tagged him for a run in the top of the seventh inning on a Luke Hughes sacrifice fly that scored 3B Matt Moses, but that was all they could muster up. McKae completed a 1-2-3 eighth inning and Joe Bateman took care of 3 of 4 batters in the ninth to nail down the Defenders win 6-2.

Yohan Pino (L, 0-1) took the loss after pitching just a third of an inning, surrendering 5 runs (4 earned), 4 hits and striking out a batter. Dave McKae (W, 4-2) picked up his fourth win and his first in nearly a month. He matched a season high with 8 innings, giving up just 2 runs, scattering 4 hits, and striking out 2 batters without surrendering a walk. Joe Bateman worked around a walk to pitch a scoreless ninth. Simon Klink went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored, Carlos Sosa went 1 for 2 with 2 RBI, 2 walks and run scored, and Jake Wald went 1 for 3 with a double, 3 RBI and a walk. The Defenders snapped a four game losing streak to the Rock Cats.

Fort Myers 2 at Lakeland 3

Record 16 - 17

W: B. Badenhop (10-5, 3.09); L: K. Waldrop (4-3, 2.82); SV: F. Dolsi (19)
HR: FTM: J. Woodard (4).

E: Shinskie (2, throw).

Burke Badenhop's pitching limited the Fort Myers Miracle bats Tuesday night and while the Lakeland Flying Tigers used 6 hits small ball to help themselves to a win at Joker Marchant Stadium.

Deik Scram's double greeted Fort Myers starter Kyle Waldrop who was making his first start since his demotion from AA. Sram moved to 3rd on a Ovandy Suero ground out. Having some room, Waldrop walked Maxwell Leon. Michael Hernandez then doubled Scram in, which put Leon in scoring position. He came ome on a Justin Justice ground out.

The Miracle got one back in the second inning when newcomer Alex Soto doubled in Dwayne White. Soto was called up from the GCL to replace catcher Allan de San Miguel who was placed on the DL with a broken pinky. But that would be all the Miracle would manage until late in the game.

Ovandy Suero singled his way onto base in the bottom of the 8th and advanced on a throw error during a pick off attempt by David Shinkie. He moved to 3rd on a Leon sac-bunt, and came home on a wild pitch by Shinskie to give the Tigers 3.

Johnny Woodard homered off Freddy Dolsi in the ninth for Fort Myers, but Soto flew out and Brian Dinkelman and Steve Tolleson both ground out to end the inning and the game.

Badenhop would be charged for 1 run on 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5 over 6 innings. Waldrop lasted 7, giving up 2 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks but struck out only 1 in the game.

Tolleson was 2-for-5 at the plate, Soto was 2-for-4. The FSL Player of the Week Danny Valencia was 0-for-3 with 1 walk. Dinkelman, the Twins player of the week, was 0-for-3 with 2 walks.

The two teams play the final game of the series Wednesday night at 7 PM with Jay Rainville (5-9, 3.62) throwing for the Miracle and Eleazar Aponte (2-8, 5.30) doing the gunning for the Flying Tigers.

The loss does nothing to change the Florida State League standings, as the Flying Tigers remain firmly entrenced in last place and Fort Myers remains 6 games back from Tampa, who have lost their last 2 games to Clearwater.

Thomas Giles (6) of the Great Lakes Loons bears down on Beloit’s Steve Singleton during the first inning of the Snappers’ 7-6 win Monday night. Giles was out, but Singleton was not able to a complete the double play.

Great Lakes 11 at Beloit 12 (12 innings)

Record 18-12

W: J. Carnevales (5-4, 4.29); L: J. Peterson (0-1, 22.50)
HR: GLL: J. Apodaca (7), M. Berezay (7), T. Giles 2 (6).

E: SinglEton (18, throw), Berg (5, throw).

From snappersbaseball.com: For the second time in as many days, the Beloit Snappers walked off winners in extra innings over the visiting Great Lakes Loons, 12-11. The four and a half hour marathon of a game ended after the Snappers’ Eli Tintor drove in a pair with a bouncing single into left field.

The Snappers snatched the lead in the third inning on a Wilson Ramos RBI single. Beloit added another run in the inning when Garrett Olson scored on a throwing error by Carlos Santana. The Loons’ responded quickly as Tommy Giles led off the fourth with a home run off starter Cole Devries to narrow the score 2-1.

Five hits led to four more runs for Great Lakes in the top of the fifth to lead for the first time all day. Down by four after the Loons’ added another score, the Snappers struck back in their half of the sixth. Following a Chris Cates walk, Joe Benson ripped a triple to right field to score Cates. Benson would sprint home on a wild pitch to make the score 6-4 in favor of the Loons’.

For the second consecutive game, the Snappers found late inning magic when Chris Parmelee knocked in a pair with a blazing single to right field. Parmelee’s clutch hit tied the game at six heading towards the ninth. With neither team able to score, the game went to an extra frame for the second day straight.

As the game dragged on into the 12th, the Loons’ were finally able to break the gridlock with a five run explosion. Juan Apodaca ignited the rally with a solo home run to center. Matt Berezay and Tommy Giles added solo shots of their own to widen the lead.

Once again the Snappers fought back with a miraculous six run 12th inning. With no pitchers left in the bullpen, the Loons’ turned to outfielder James Peterson and shortstop Adolfo Gonzalez to close out the game. The lack of pitching would cost the Loons the win, though, as Peterson and Gonzalez struggled with control.

Jesus Carnevales picked up his fifth win of the season in relief while James Peterson was charged with the loss. Offensively, the Snappers were led by Joe Benson, who had four hits, including a triple. Wilson Ramos and Chris Parmelee had two RBI each in the win.
