Wings infielder Matt Tolbert is talked into one more autograph as he goes to the dugout before Thursday's game.

From redwingsbaseball.com: Before a paid attendence of 10,340, the Red Wings defeated the Syracuse Chiefs Thursday afternoon 3-2 at Frontier Field in just 2 hours and 17 minutes after a walk-off hit by Glenn Williams in the bottom of the ninth. The Wings scored twice in the first inning and after seven shutout innings by starter Brian Bass and a blown save by closer Bobby Korecky, came back to escape with a clutch victory in the bottom of the 9th.

In the first inning, Matt Tolbert looked to kick start the Red Wings offense by laying down a perfect bunt toward third for an infield hit. Darnell McDonald, just sent down by the Twins yesterday, sent a 3-2 pitch just inside the first base bag for a single, advancing Tolbert to third. Garrett Jones proceeded to take a 1-0 offering to right, just out of the reach of the outfielder, for an RBI double, leaving runners at second and third. Chris Heintz hit a grounder in the hole at short, ruled an infield single, that the shortstop could not come up with cleanly and Jones attempted to move up to third, but was thrown out when the fielder quickly tracked down the loose ball. Jose Morales grounded back to the pitcher to leave one stranded.

The Chiefs responded in the second when John-Ford Griffin hit a sinking line drive that fooled Denard Span and fell in for a hit. However, a quick double play by Bass eliminated any scoring opportunities. A nice running play by Span, however, ended the inning.

After the second, Bass settled in and began crafting a gem. In the third inning Robinzon Diaz swung and lost the handle of the bat having it fly into the stands on a swinging strike three. The next batter, Ray Olmedo, also lost his grip and sent his bat flying to the backstop. Both batters struck out.

After retiring 14 in a row, Bass finally gave up a single up the middle in the top of the 7th inning. However, the base runner was erased on another double play. He would finish the day with seven shutout innings, seven strikeouts and only three hits allowed and did not walk a batter.

Korecky came in for the top of the 9th trying to close out the win. A leadoff single to Diaz brought the tying run to the plate. After inducing a fielder's choice, Russ Adams connected for a two-run home run to tie the ball game. After allowing another hit to Kevin Barker, Korecky was taken out in favor of Carmen Cali who got a popup to send the game to the bottom of the 9th.

After a ground out by Morales, Tommy Watkins stretched a single to center into a double, sliding in just ahead of the tag. In scoring position with one out, Williams stepped up to hit right-handed against the left-hander Mike Venafro, who came into the game in the eighth. But Chiefs manager Doug Davis opted to bring in righty Ryan Houston, allowing the switch-hitting Williams to bat left-handed. With a batting average 100 points higher against right-handers, Williams responded with a drive to right that allowed Watkins to score easily with the winning run.

NOTES: The Red Wings have now won nine of their last 10 games vs. Syracuse at Frontier Field (Red Wings have outscored Syracuse 51-30 during this 10-game stretch). Rochester hasn’t lost a season series vs. Syracuse since 2000 (58-45 record since 2001)....DePaula has been lights out his last 11 games, going 4-0 with a 1.27 ERA. In 21.2 innings of work, DePaula has allowed just three runs on 14 hits while walking just three and striking out 23. Opponents are batting just .194 (14-for-72) against him during this 10-game stretch.

HR: NHM: D. Smith 2 (13).

E: Feiner (1, pickoff).

From nhfishercats.com: David Smith hit a pair of home runs to lead the Fisher Cats over the New Britain Rock Cats in the series opener, 4-3.

The right fielder had a three-run shot in the second inning, and he added a solo shot in the fourth inning that hit off of the Hilton Garden Inn in left-center field.

New Hampshire's Aaron Mathews opened the second inning with a walk, and Rob Cosby followed by popping out. Chip Cannon then hit a double to right field, and then Smith connected for his first of the game on a shot to right field, which was named the RELCO Enlightening Play of Game.

Smith's home run in the fourth came with two outs and gave the Fisher Cats a 4-1 lead. Smith now has 13 home runs and 44 RBI this year. Smith also had a multi-home run game back on July 18 of last year against Portland.

Eric Fowler was dominant on the mound for New Hampshire giving up just seven hits, three runs (two earned) and no walks while striking out three. It was Fowler's first quality start since his Eastern League debut back on June 21.

GCL Reds 6 at GCL Twins 2

Current Record: 20 - 8

W: B. Rice (2-0, 3.32); L: R. Gessmann (2-1, 2.93)
HR: None.

It's usually bad luck to mention that the opposing team is on a losing streak. I know that. I shouldn't have done it.

The two runs the Twins had to start the game would be all they would get in the conclusion of Saturday's suspended game.

Cincinnati tied the game in sixth when David Scott tripled Neftali Soto in. They then picked up 3 runs in the 8th, with Alexis Oliveras coming in on a Radhames Moreta sac fly, Justin Reed on a Sota double and Soto on a Devin Mesoraco single to take the lead for good.

Reed plated Oliveras in the ninth to finish it off.

Jeanfred Brito was 4-for-4 at the plate, Danny Rohlfing was 2-for-4, and Juan Richardson had a pair of walks in the contest. Angel Morales struck out twice.

Rodney Guessmann absorbed the loss, giving up 4 runs, all earned on 6 hits and 1 walk in 3.2 innings. Jarrad Eacott finished up the game, allowing 1 run on 2 hits in 1.1 innings work.

GCL Reds 1 at GCL Twins 4

W: W. Marquez (2-1, 2.67); L: S. Otterness (0-4, 5.26)
HR: RDS: T. Brown (3).

The Twins bats rebounded in the second game through, and the Twins used a 3 run sixth inning to bring in a win.

Ramon Santana was hit by a pitch to get on base, but didn't stay there long as Jeanfred Brito hit into a force out. 1st round draft pick Ben Revere walked before Yangervis Solarte singled to load the bases. A Juan Richardson single brought in Brito and an Angel Morales double finished off the work before Nick Biagini was called out on strikes to end the inning.

The Twin had gotten onto the board when Revere singled, move to 2nd on a sac-bunt, stole 3rd and came home on Steve Otterness' wild pitch.

The Reds got their lone run when Tony Brown homered off closer Danny Rondon.

Winston Marquez picked up the win for the home team, allowing 3 hits and 1 walk in 5 innings while striking out 3. Jose Acosta threw a perfect sixth inning before Rondon was brought in to end the game.

Five different Twins had hits in the game, with Morales have the lone double. Danny Rams and Biagini each struck out twice.

The Red Sox visit the Lee County Sportsplex for a nooner today. I believe Liam "The Terminator" Hendriks is due up on the mound for this one.
