Trenton 5 at New Britain 4

Record: 47 - 48

W: J. Marquez (10-6, 3.11); L: J. Floyd (4-8, 4.65); SV: J. Pope (1)
HR: TRE: C. Ehlers (5).

From rockcats.com: A sellout crowd of 7,394, the fourth largest in stadium history, watched as the Rock Cats nearly pulled off another late-inning comeback. The Rock Cats scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth, but fell short as they dropped Saturday night’s game 5-4 to Trenton.

In the eighth inning, Trevor Plouffe doubled to left field. Plouffe came around to score on Felix Molina’s single for the Rock Cats’ first run of the game. Brock Peterson added an RBI single to close the gap, 5-2. Reliever Tim Lavigne’s wild pitch scored Molina from third later in the inning. Lavigne then unleashed another two wild pitches, the second allowing a run to score.

Trenton jumped out of the gates with a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Colin Curtis opened the inning with a walk and Alberto Gonzalez followed with a double. Rock Cats starter Jesse Floyd forced Noah Hall to pop up to center field before Juan Miranda laced a hit to right field to score Curtis and Gonzalez. Miranda raced to third, but he was sent back to second after the umpires met and ruled the hit was a ground-rule double.

Cody Ehlers hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning for Trenton. Aarom Baldiris added an RBI triple to put the Thunder ahead, 5-0.

Floyd (4-8) labored through four innings, allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks. Frank Mata, Tristan Crawford, and Angel Garcia combined for two hits and five strikeouts in five shutout innings of relief.

Trenton’s Jeffrey Marquez fired six shutout innings. Marquez (10-6) allowed three hits and struck out four. Justin Pope picked up his first save of the year.

It was old friend's day at the Miracle game and Miracle that I've come to know and um...love...were out on the field.

Fort Myers managed only 1 hit in six innings against Ben Jukich, a former 13th round draft pick by the Oakland Athletics. They were totally confounded for one inning by Jose Rojas, a free agent signee.

The managed 3 against Pedro Viola, another free agent, this one from Dominican, and 2 of those came in the ninth after Zach Ward abandoned the mound. I hope Ward never aspires to pitching 9 innings. It will be likely be a no hitter for the team facing him.

Cody Strait reached on a fielding error by StevE TollEson, and Erik Eymann walked following by a Michael DeJesus sac-bunt. With Chris Valaika batting, a wild pitch by Ward brought Strait across the plate. A double by Valaika allowed Eymann to score and that's how Zach Ward allowed 2 runs on 1 hit.

He settled down after that, allowing on 6 hits and 1 walk while striking out 9 in 8 innings. David Shinskie, a member of the mustache brigade, closed out the game for the ninth inning, allowed 2 hits while striking out 3 to end the game.

The Miracle narrowly avoided a shut out in the 9th with 2 outs, when Juan Portes singled and Danny Valencia walked. An Erik Lis double plated Portes. Edward Ovalle was intentionally walked before Johnny Woodard, who is batting just .172 on the season, was struck out, his 4th strike out of the game.

The two teams meet today, but I'll be sitting in the shade over at City of Palms. Errol Simonitch will take to mound for the Miracle, his first FSL start as he continues to rehab the injury that cost him most of the season. The Reds will counter with another 13th rounder, Logan Ondrusek (5-6, 4.48)

(I heard the old "We are the Miracle, we're going to make you say Wow" commercial on the way home from fair grounds yesterday. They did make me say wow Saturday, as in "Wow. This team really stinks tonight.")

Great Lakes 3 at Beloit 8

Record 16-11

W: A. Burnett (6-5, 2.97); L: J. Adkins (0-1, 4.50)
HR: BEL: E. Tintor 2 (4).

E: Berg (4, fielding).

From snappersbaseball.com: Alex Burnett showed why he was a MWL All-Star Saturday night in a game against the Great Lakes Loons. In an 8-3 Beloit win, the right-hander threw seven strong innings of shutout baseball, allowing only 3 hits and striking out 8 Great Lakes’ batters. The outing netted Burnett his sixth victory of the season.

Eli Tintor provided the offensive fireworks to support Burnett. Tintor drove the first pitch he saw deep over the left field fence in the third inning and added a double in the fifth inning. Leading off the seventh inning, Tintor socked his second round tripper of the game. The Snappers’ left fielder finished 3 for 4 on the night.

Continuing his recent offensive surge, shortstop Yancarlos Ortiz added a pair of hits for the victorious Snappers. Steve Singleton scored twice while Garrett Olson added a pair of RBI’s.

All three Great Lakes runs came in the top of the eighth inning. Reliever Matt Williams was charged with all three earned runs while recording only one out. However, Aaron Craig came in and put a quick end to the Loons’ rally.

Loons’ starter James Adkins lasted only two innings against the Snappers’ sizzling bats. He was charged with his first loss of the season.

E: Romero (4, fielding), De Los Santos 2 (12, fielding, throw).

From MiLB.com: Matthew Lawman hit a grand slam in the second inning as Elizabethton rolled over visiting Bluefield, 12-4, on Saturday.

After Mark Dolenc was hit by a pitch to force in a run, Lawman belted his first career homer and Deibinson Romero doubled in Rene Tosoni, capping a six-run inning.

Tosoni cracked a solo homer, his second, walked twice and scored three runs for the Twins (24-6), who have won five straight.

Elizabethton starter Henry Reyes (3-2) gave up an unearned run on two hits and four walks while striking out seven in five frames.

GCL Reds 1 at GCL Twins 2 (Suspended - Rain)

Current Record: 19 - 6

We got to the top of the bottom of the 4th with 2 outs before the game was called due to lightning and the rains followed hard on it's heels.

Liam Hendriks, who's been resting with a forearm strain made the start and lasted his customary 3.1 innings, striking out 4 over that time. He was pulled in favor of Mark Hamburger, a soft tosser, who I'm rather keen on.

The lone Reds run came in the fourth after Liam allowed a single at the top of the order to Justin Reed and a walk to Alexis Oliveras. Hamburger gave up the inherited run on a wild pitch.

The Twins had gotten on the board in the 3rd, when Jeanfred Brito scampered over the plate on a Jeremy Vinyard wild pitch. Brito had reached on a singled and moved to second on Vinyard's throwing error, then to third on when Yangervis Solarte reached on an error. Brito was 3-for-3 in the start of the aborted contest.

James Beresford walked to get on base and Brito plated him for the second run.

The game will be resumed Thursday July 26, at the Lee County Sportscomplex, followed by a 7 inning game which would be the regularly scheduled game for that day.

I went over to check the gun speed on Hamburger, he does brush 92, but generally he's throwing between 88 and 90.

Paul Kelly and Andrew Thompson are finished for the season and have been sent home. Catcher David Hernandez was released by the team, an unfortunate turn of circumstances for the free agent slugger, following the signing of Danny Rams.

Rondell White made to appearances as designed hitter, picking up a single in his first at bat. He is expected to be reasigned sometime this week. 1st round draft pick Ben Revere has a mild injury, was dressed for the game, but did not play.

The Twins head over to City of Palms complex today for a game against the Red Sox at noon.
